OK, here we go :-) In LINT we find the follwing two things: ----------------- Part 1 ----------------------- # BOUNCE_BUFFERS provides support for ISA DMA on machines with more # than 16 megabytes of memory. It doesn't hurt on other machines. # Some broken EISA and VLB hardware may need this, too. pseudo-device ccd 4 #Concatenated disk driver # # DUMMY_NOPS disables extra delays for some bus operations. Probably # works OK on most EISA bus machines. --------------- Part 2 ----------------------- # The `tun' pseudo-device implements the User Process PPP (iijppp) # pseudo-device ether #Generic Ethernet pseudo-device fddi #Generic FDDI pseudo-device sppp #Generic Synchronous PPP options USERCONFIG_BOOT #imply -c and parse info area pseudo-device loop #Network loopback device pseudo-device sl 2 #Serial Line IP pseudo-device ppp 2 #Point-to-point protocol pseudo-device bpfilter 4 #Berkeley packet filter pseudo-device disc #Discard device pseudo-device tun 1 #Tunnel driver(user process ppp) ---------------------------------------------- Shouldn't the ccd line and the USERCONFIG_BOOT line be put somwhere else? I just looke at the LINT at ftp.FreeBSD.org to ensure I didn't break something at home, but it is the same. Just wondering... The problem is almost certainly in get_diskinfo(). It is documented to clobber ES:DI in some manuals: Phoenix "System BIOS ...": ES:DI = Address of Fixed Disk Parameters table Van Gilluwe "The Undocumented PC": This function does _not_ return a pointer to the drive type table as is commonly indicated in many other technical references. Ralf Brown's Interrupt List version 45: (PC,XT286,CONV,PS,ESDI,SCSI): ES:DI -> drive parameter table (floppies only) [Long bug list: sometimes bogusly returns success for drives after the last; sometimes returns wrong number of drives.] This problem apparently became serious when I optimised some things. I think dosdev used to be kept in memory, and apparently nothing important was kept in %edi. >This means that it's OK to clobber most registers except %ebx, %esi, >%edi and %ebp. (%eax is a special case, it may contain a return >value). I think the other registers are preserved as insurance against the function call protocol changing. This isn't worthwhile, since the function call protocol is more likely to change in other ways, but but I'll keep preserving all(?) registers for now. They agree with the 3rd reference for floppies. So the floppy case is always broken, and the hard disk case is broken if BIOS implements what the 1st reference says. Actually, although the bootstrap calls get_diskinfo() for floppies (if the boot drive is a floppy, in disk.c), %edi happens to usually be unused at that point, so there is usually only a problem for BIOSes that change %edi for hard disks. Hai Tor, The %edi was entirely correct. What we did: 1. added a pushed/poppped %edi on get_diskinfo in bios.S. Result: drive was no longer destroyed 2. replaced the bios. The bios was 1.00.03.CL0. We downloaded the latest bios from Intel which was 1.00.06.CL0. Result: problem also disappeared. Thanks everyone who took part in this discussion for their comments. I think we can close this case. I suggest that you > clean your tree and rebuild it. Before you do that, you might want to just try a bit of text editing. gunzip src-2.1.0196.gz (after, of course, making a copy of the original file) and delete the reference to that one file (if your system is in the same state as mine, it's only trying to delete that one file.) When you gzip the 196 file again and rerun ctm, you'll get an error message that the checksum should be some hideously long number instead of the original hideously long number. gunzip the 196 file again, replace the original checksum at the end of the file with the new checksum, re-gzip and rerun ctm. This worked for me, and I'm up to src-2.1.0210. Usual restrictions apply, however: your mileage may vary; may cause blindness in farm animals; etc. etc. etc. From owner-freebsd-stable Thu Nov 14 07:25:03 1996 Return-Path: owner-stable Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id HAA14930 for stable-outgoing; Thu, 14 Nov 1996 07:25:03 -0800 (PST) Received: from fgate.flevel.co.uk (root@fgate.flevel.co.uk [194.6.101.2]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id HAA14880; Thu, 14 Nov 1996 07:24:39 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (dev@localhost) by fgate.flevel.co.uk (8.7.5/8.6.9) with SMTP id PAA28432; Thu, 14 Nov 1996 15:25:55 GMT Date: Thu, 14 Nov 1996 15:25:54 +0000 (GMT) From: Developer To: freebsd-current@freebsd.org, freebsd-stable@freebsd.org, freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Subject: PLEASE HELP - PROBLEM WITH NIS Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-stable@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Does anyone know how I can get NIS to work correctly? I'd like to grab the stable source tree and keep it on a local machine here for convenience, so I was wondering about two things: 1. Is it finished? 2. Is there a better way to install than using sysinstall and then cvsup-ing 2.1.5 -release to -stable. I feel like I'm probably missing some simple way to do a direct -stable install... I've compared the 0196 file I received by mail and it matches the one on freefall. I'm rather mystified as to why starting from scratch would have produced a different result anyway, since they're exactly the same patches. The 0196 patch fails at: FN: gnu/usr.bin/patch/EXTRN.h md5 mismatch FN: gnu/usr.bin/patch/EXTRN.h edit fails Exit(120) The file in question is still linked to the CD-ROM file, so it's never been modified before this patch. At this point, I'm wondering if I might just be better off switching over to -current at his point anyway. -Dave From owner-freebsd-stable Thu Nov 14 09:43:26 1996 Return-Path: owner-stable Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id JAA20755 for stable-outgoing; Thu, 14 Nov 1996 09:43:26 -0800 (PST) Received: from Rigel.orionsys.com (root@rigel.orionsys.com [205.148.224.9]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id JAA20740 for ; Thu, 14 Nov 1996 09:43:08 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (dbabler@localhost) by Rigel.orionsys.com (8.7.6/8.6.9) with SMTP id JAA25591; Thu, 14 Nov 1996 09:42:50 -0800 (PST) Date: Thu, 14 Nov 1996 09:42:49 -0800 (PST) From: Dave Babler To: Dave Glowacki cc: stable@freefall.freebsd.org Subject: Re: CTM coredumps on src-2.1.0196.gz... Rest assured that several people are investigating this at this time... I believe it has something to do with the inode allocation bits in ffs_valloc(). Others believe some race conditions in vnode allocation are to blaim, etc... David Greene is investigating other avenues. It seems to me that we are closing in on the issue, if only by eliminating everything else :-) - Dave Rivers - p.s. LINT has options "MAXMEM=(128*1024)" which "make depend" chokes on, "MAXMEM='(128*1024)'" works, though. I dunno if that'll work later in the compilation phase. Once I get past that, I quickly hit ../../dev/vx/if_vx.c: In function `vxioctl': ../../dev/vx/if_vx.c:891: parse error before `register' ../../dev/vx/if_vx.c:893: `ina' undeclared (first use this function) ../../dev/vx/if_vx.c:893: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once ../../dev/vx/if_vx.c:893: for each function it appears in.) Case statements are not blocks, you can't declare a variable after a case label unless you create a block for that variable's scope. If gcc-2.7.2 lets you do this, it's C++ semantics seeping through and we shouldn't take advantage of it. We'll see what comes up after this one... There is no reason that we should not continue to fix obvious errors in 2.1. 2.1 will continue to be available for some time and any applied corrections will also be available (even if they did not make it into 2.1.6) I will even try to get Jordan to include those patches on the 2.2 CDs.
