Are there any "quick start" instructions anywhere? I did read the man page but found myself somewhat confused as to just what exactly I had to prepare in the DOS domain to set this up. It might be nice if we could come up with a little 'starter kit' which would DTRT assuming /dev/fd0 as the A drive and a possible disk slice for the C drive (e.g I have mine on /dev/sd0s1 and could provide that to the installer if it wanted to know) - this might help DOS Dummies like myself set it up. :) Jordan From owner-cvs-sys Sun Sep 21 10:17:55 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id KAA08522 for cvs-sys-outgoing; Sun, 21 Sep 1997 10:17:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.FreeBSD.ORG [204.216.27.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id KAA08376; Sun, 21 Sep 1997 10:15:46 -0700 (PDT) From: Jun-ichiro Itoh Received: (from itojun@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.6/8.8.5) id KAA10894; Sun, 21 Sep 1997 10:11:28 -0700 (PDT) Date: Sun, 21 Sep 1997 10:11:28 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199709211711.KAA10894@freefall.freebsd.org> To: cvs-committers@FreeBSD.ORG, cvs-all@FreeBSD.ORG, cvs-sys@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: cvs commit: src/sys/scsi scsi_all.h src/sys/i386/scsi aic7xxx.c Sender: owner-cvs-sys@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk itojun 1997/09/21 10:11:27 PDT Modified files: (Branch: RELENG_2_2) sys/scsi scsi_all.h sys/i386/scsi aic7xxx.c Log: merge from current: scsi RESERVATION CONFLICT support. A component of the kernel can register a hook, most likely during auto-configuration, and receive a callback once interrupt services are available. This callback will occur before the root and dump devices are configured, so the configuration task can affect the selection of those two devices or complete any tasks that need to be performed prior to launching init. System boot is posponed so long as a hook is registered. The hook owner is responsible for removing the hook once their task is complete or the system boot can continue. kern_acct.c kern_clock.c kern_exit.c kern_synch.c kern_time.c: Change the interface and implementation for the kernel callout service. The new implemntaion is based on the work of Adam M. Costello and George Varghese, published in a technical report entitled "Redesigning the BSD Callout and Timer Facilities". The interface used in FreeBSD is a little different than the one outlined in the paper. The new function prototypes are: struct callout_handle timeout(void (*func)(void *), void *arg, int ticks); void untimeout(void (*func)(void *), void *arg, struct callout_handle handle); If a client wishes to remove a timeout, it must store the callout_handle returned by timeout and pass it to untimeout. The new implementation gives 0(1) insert and removal of callouts making this interface scale well even for applications that keep 100s of callouts outstanding. See the updated timeout.9 man page for more details. If not, then we have to keep maintaining this change everytime we update it, which would imply that it would be easier to change the 'locally' maintained code. Sure, there maybe other reasons to do it, but to me, "make world" doesn't exactly exhibit random file system behaviour or anything but intensive use of certain parts, in a certain order for a set amount of time. All in all a very limited behaviour pattern which will cache well, as opposed to (say) 200 users connecting to a news server. I'd be more interested in some other results, if they're available...? I was waiting for the commit mail to reach me, so I could send out the customary explanation: I belive that I have analysed the situation very carefully. I just needed measurements to confirm my conclusions. There could be cases where this is not a good idea, I havn't been able to find any so far. If you suspect you have such a condition do this: sysctl -w debug.wantfreevnodes=0 which will revert to the previous behaviour. When foofs_mount mounts block device, foofs_mount checks D_CLUSTERR and D_CLUSTERW bits of the d_flags member in the block device switch table. If D_NOCLUSTERR / D_NOCLUSTERW are set, MNT_NOCLUSTERR / MNT_NOCLUSTERW bits will be set. In this case, MNT_NOCLUSTERR and MNT_NOCLUSTERW cannot be cleared from userland. 3. Vnode driver disables both clustered read and write. 4. Union filesystem disables clutered write. These are immediate operands that are set during seqeuncer program download instead of at assembly time. Convert the sequencer code to use" downloaded constants" for four run time constants that vary depending on the board type. This frees up 4 bytes of sequencer scratch ram space where these constants used to be stored and also removes the additional instructions required to load their values into the accumulator prior to using them. Remove the REJBYTE sram variable. The host driver can just as easly read the accumulator to get this value. The scratch ram savings is important as the old code used to clober the SCSICONF register on 274X cards which sits near the top of scratch ram space. The SCSICONF register controls bus termination, and clobbering it is not a good thing. Now we have 4 bytes to spare. This should fix the reported problems with cards that don't have devices attached to them failing with a stream of "Somone reset bus X" messages. Doug Ledford determined the cause of the problem, fixes by me.
