An involved story, but the old network is moving and the router was moved. I have use of the existing IP numbers for a bit, and need to use these until I can change them through the internic. I've physically moved the server to another ethernet with a different gateway and want to know how (if possible!) to set this up. The web server is most important, although no one is paying for this yet... At first I just tried adding a new gateway, but that didn't seem to work. What I've tried so far is bind an ip # from the new net to the interface. I can telnet to this ip number from the new network. The default gateway is now 205.185.169.1 (a cisco 2500) Do I need to add a route from the cisco to the old numbers? How? Speaking of which, the numbers are 206.250.85.99 to x.x.x.109. We're running into a similar problem (the USR stuff is still being beta tested) on a 2.1.7-stable machine. radiusd catches a sig 11 and dies. Looking at the core it appeared to be during a failed authentication. The same machine runs primary nameservice and acts as a mail hub, and this is so far the only program that sig 11s. Does anyone have a preference on which radius dist to use with a USR TCH? The question is, does the rest of the internet know that this net is reachable through this router? This is a nice hack to transition from one provider to another with a router from Provider A and one from Provider B on the same ethernet and all hosts answering to two IPs, but otherwise, it will not really accomplish anything as all traffic to these IPs will still head towards your original router. If you do have two providers on the same wire, be sure to give *both* routers addresses on the other's net. And try to avoid running RIP, as I believe it could cause quite a mess... Like this int new.eth.ip.here old.net.here 255.255.255.0 old.ip.here so int 205.185.169.120 206.250.85.0 255.255.255.0 206.250.85.99 ??? > > exit > wr mem > > This will put a second address on the cisco, and "automagically" > make it see the your machine with the old number. > > The question is, does the rest of the internet know that this net is > reachable through this router? After thinking this through, I tend to agree it won't accomplish much...I only have the new router here...and the old network was a kludged effort at subnetting which I'm sure wasn't right (like I said I didn't set it up--but I do need to set one up properly here). > If you do have two providers on the same wire, be sure to give > *both* routers addresses on the other's net. And try to avoid > running RIP, as I believe it could cause quite a mess... Router is enabled and has been in rc.conf, but I did enable gateway--this runs RIP? Should I shut it down? I think I'll do it now until I find out...gateway is now off. I recall seeing some cautions here about using routed--do I need it? I was told to use it before I knew to be skeptical about the advice I was getting. :( > Charles > Again, thanks for the advice! Riley > On Tue, 2 Sep 1997, Riley J. I believe the problem is in the string library someplace. Ive noted that since 2.1.5, programs that make use of functions like strncmp, strcat, etc will sig 11 when they didnt used to. Instead of returning a null or a zero they cause a dump. Especially in instances such as searching for a substring if the string you are searching in has nothing in it (just 1 char '\0'). We have in the past used only ASUS mainboards, but they don't seem to have much in the way of AT style boards that support more than 256 mb. Our current rack mounts won't accept an ATX style board. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a good, reliable main board that will properly handle 512 mb ? We're looking at either Pentium II or PRO for the CPU's. Thanks. I managed to solve that particular problem by changining the 'users' file. Additionally in the 2.2-STABLE code the ports compiles apparently use /etc/make.conf and the CCFLAGS that most people use for building the world cause nasty things to happen to radius. I got an email from William Bulley suggesting a compile with just the '-g' option and that radius seems a lot more stable (days up instead of hours or minutes). The changes I made to the users file basically changed it to look like this: DEFAULT Authentication-Type = Realm, Service-Type = Framed, Framed-Protocol = PPP, Framed-IP-Netmask = 255.255.255.255, Framed-Routing = None, Framed-MTU = 1500, Framed-Compression = Van-Jacobson-TCP-IP # Filter-Id = "unlim" I don't really remember how that differs from the original/default. But it works. Might have been just commenting out the Filter-Id... In my experience all 'cheap' (read: 'low quality components') modems have compatability problems. 'cheap' modems usually have problems handling odd things (I'm sure the kflex modem tone-up is a bit different), and it just hoses the modem and you don't get the results you want to... I've personally had this problem with every modem since a 2400... If the modems won't connect, try putting a few commas after the dialup string. That way, it gets past the initial tone. This trick has worked for quite a few modems. Oh, we've seen problems with almost every brand of WinModem available. Also, V.42bis in the current 3.7 release of the PM-3 code is broken. On modems that are having a hard time staying online turn off V.42bis and/or error correction. That would be an incredibly stupid thing to do, and nobody's going to do that. However, there have been problems with the PM3 recently, with some people saying it's a problem in the new ComOS 3.7 (affecting both the old and the new modem cards), and others saying it's a problem with the new K56Flex modem cards and their software in the PM3. It appeared to be mostly a problem with the "cheaper" modems (and hence usually lower quality), and several brands of USR. Last I knew, it was not resolved, although I am nearly a week behind in reading the portmaster-users mailing list. [If you have a PM3 and are seeing problems, I strongly recommend subscribing to the portmaster-users mailing list. Go for the digest version, though, unless you have a good way to automatically separate the incoming mail, as it is an -extremely- active list. Send mail to majordomo@livingston.com for more info on their lists.] One workaround that seemed to be helping some people was setting &K0 in the modem init strings. -- Michael Bryan michael@blueneptune.com From owner-freebsd-isp Wed Sep 3 11:22:39 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id LAA28130 for isp-outgoing; Wed, 3 Sep 1997 11:22:39 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.mexcom.net (mail.mexcom.net [206.103.64.97]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id LAA28123 for ; Wed, 3 Sep 1997 11:22:32 -0700 (PDT) Received: from sunix (eculp@sunix.mexcom.net [206.103.64.3]) by mail.mexcom.net (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id NAA13701; Wed, 3 Sep 1997 13:22:09 -0500 (CDT) Message-ID: <340DAACB.6D2EF3C0@mexcom.net> Date: Wed, 03 Sep 1997 13:22:03 -0500 From: Edwin Culp Organization: Mexico Communicates, S.C. My thinking is that even with it properly configured internally the outside world couldn't see me without my previous router being on the same ethernet (?). Additionally, the /28 subnet was never set up properly and I was concerned about that. Dan, I turned off routed per your suggestion--(I didn't enable it in the first place) I was aware from your previous statements that there could be problems with it although I don't know the details of why.. So I changed all the ip #s and put in for modifications with the Internic last night. Luckily the important ones when through for today. (Although I don't understand why a couple others got the "need human eyes" junk! :( ) Again, thanks all for the advice! Although I did try the source dist, I walked away from it after a few half-hearted attempts at getting it to compile on FreeBSD-2.2.1. When things quite down a little, maybe I'll see about porting some of my favorite linux/rad-1.16 hacks back in. The main thing I needed was SCP username prefix, but it's built into livingston rad-2.0. They also support suffixes. This radiusd has been rock solid for us. I would at least check that Ascend support in the merit daemon you're using. I seem to remember some trouble with Ascend and Livingston being able to use the same radius server although we've never had Ascends in our network. I have read in the Livingston website that they have tested the Zoom K56Flex and include it as a compatible modem. I have also recieved many recommendations to consider the Supra as my upgrade. I also understand that PM-3 will not fully support USR x2 until sometime in 1998. This may make me put off upgrading until I am sure what I am upgrading to is full digital. I understand from the Hayes website that their modem is anologue, and the real choice seems to be digital. I did try &K0 or in my case \Q0 in a effort, to no avail. For the time being adding the few(3) commas to my dial string adds the fix for me to get a compatible hookup. I have also passed your suggestions on to one of the few capable support staff at My ISP so as he to can benefit from your experience. Thanks again. -- =| Regards, =| FreeBSD ==> http://www.FreeBSD.org =| Kevin G. Eliuk =| "Free at last, free at last, ...." Older USR (Junk) Sportsters (king of the junkpile) had problems connecting to the PM3 since they were pretty far out of the V.32bis specs, but hey, thats USR for you... My point about USR - Maybe 3com will just digest them to making Couriers for people with too much money and leave the packard-hell-buying-consumer-market alone, since they cannot seem to make a quality product for less than twice anyone else. Thanks. What kind of modems? I've found that some modems will just occasionally lock up and require power cycling. You might be able to reduce the occurance of this by keeping the modems cooler or playing with init strings and default configurations. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Jon Lewis | Unsolicited commercial e-mail will Network Administrator | be proof-read for $199/message. It's part of how they make the Magick work. There is no workaround. I have that running with what one of our clients. (were using sendmail he's using SlMail f/NT)... it's quite simple.. there is this a command that a server can issue to another one called "ETRN yourname.com". It basically tells the server to process the queue for "yourname.com". To get this working you: - assign them an IP, that will never be reachable, unless they dialin. - make it the primary mail exchanger for that domain. - make your secondary mail exchanger one of your boxes. - get their MS-Exchange server to ETRN yours. So basically what this accomplishes, is all mail will never get the main server unless they are online, and when they are the tell your server to dump it's queue. mark -- Mark Segal mark@club-web.com System Administrator - Club-Web Inc. What you need is a PRI (Primary Rate Interface) for the term servers. Plan on waiting for the phone company to figure out on how to crimp the RJ-45 connector for the PRI. Then you need a Term Server that takes PRI lines, and have some sort of 56k style on DSPs and firmware. To reach the 56k (or something like it), The majorty of the public switched network (mr phone network) is digital, but what comes to a clients is standard analog lines. So when you call up it goes like this. modem (A)-----(D)Phone Network(D)-------(A)Provider. BUt with the the 56k stuff it is a lil diffrent: modem(a)------(d)Phone Network(d)-------(d)provider. See on how there isn't that 2nd A/D conversion. That alows more signal to go across the line and not be taken up by the A/D conversion. But it only works down stream.
