Secure mode is 'do not accept log entries from remote servers', which is what the existing code does (did). It's not supposed to disable the local server from *sending* queries. Many security conscious sites have a central log collector that accepts syslog entries from all it's associated machines, and doesn't offer login or other services that might be compromisable to gain access. All the other machines have their local syslogd's forwarding the more important log entries to the central machine. They need to be able to send (obviously), but generally shouldn't accept syslog entries from "out there". What you've done is disable the ability to send logs to a central server without exposing the machine to abuse. This is a step backwards IMHO. > Comments ? If people are concerned about having the socket "sitting there" (which is a good thing IMHO, since syslogd can't be sure of *getting* a fd if somebody is attacking the machine by trying to use up all files), then perhaps an alternative might be to open and close the socket() before and after the sendto() while in SecureMode. Incidently, I don't disagree with the cleanup in the diff, just the removal of the socket open. The existing code was a bit messy and did work that was not needed (initialise sin, do the getservbyname() etc). Well, for the ipfw to work, wouldn't the socket need to be bound to a well-known-port then ? That was the fact that made me conclude that you couldn't do the above scenario in the first place. I would think that all securemode should do would be to not include the fd in what select is watching, but the code before this change also diked out the bind, so you wouldn't know what port you would be sending syslog messages from, making ipfw unable to decide if the message came from syslogd or some random user... -- Poul-Henning Kamp FreeBSD coreteam member phk@FreeBSD.ORG "Real hackers run -current on their laptop." That was the fact that made me conclude that > you couldn't do the above scenario in the first place. If you run in -s mode, syslogd doesn't bind(), so it *cannot* receive packets, period. -s mode is "do not listen" to the network, it's not supposed to stop that instance of syslogd from sending. > I would think that all securemode should do would be to not include the > fd in what select is watching, but the code before this change also > diked out the bind, so you wouldn't know what port you would be sending > syslog messages from, making ipfw unable to decide if the message came > from syslogd or some random user... Securemode stops the bind() and the select(). ipfw is irrelevant in -s mode since it doesn't receive data. The socket is only used for sendto(). It's created and kept around so that syslogd can't ever get stuck trying to send a critical log message over the network but fail because all fd's are in use. You use ipfw or syslogd's internal masks (see -a flag) without the -s flag in order to safely get logs from other syslogds over the network. -s was working exactly as indented (and documented) before (although the code was messy, I'll grant you that. :-) >From the FM: -s Operate in secure mode. Do not listen for log message from re- mote machines. Nowhere does it imply that -s make syslogd fail to process the @loghost syslog.conf directives. On the client machines, you use -s and divert important logs to the server. On the server machine(s), you use -a and/or ipfw to limit where you'll accept packets from. Argueably, syslogd should not listen by default and should require a switch to activate network listening, but that breaks POLA when people do a 'make world' or upgrade. (this is the same reason why named still has a path to /etc/named.boot compiled into it, and yet we have shipped /etc/namedb/ named.boot for ages... Your correct, in that you have to wild card the source port, which would allow someone on one of the syslogd client machines to abuse the server, but thats better than nothing at all, and the way things are now you would have to run syslogd in totally unsecure mode, a step backwards. A step forward would be to make -s use syslog 514 port as the source port for syslog messages. Then you could change the ipfw rules from ipfw add pass udp from ${trustedclient} to ${syslogserver} 514 to ipfw add pass udp from ${trustedclient} 514 to ${syslogserver} 514 > I would think that all securemode should do would be to not include the > fd in what select is watching, but the code before this change also > diked out the bind, so you wouldn't know what port you would be sending > syslog messages from, making ipfw unable to decide if the message came > from syslogd or some random user... Yes, I agree too, but I suggest that if syslogd is going to bind to the address, then it should also select and receive the messages, but automatically discard them.. Otherwise the socket will hold the packets in buffers and consume resources indefinately. If we're going to do that, then perhaps we count them as well and resource an exponential count.. ie, something like: Apr 24 10:52:17 spinner syslogd: unauthorized remote message count: 1 Apr 24 10:52:17 spinner syslogd: unauthorized remote message count: 10 Apr 24 10:52:17 spinner syslogd: unauthorized remote message count: 100 Apr 24 10:52:17 spinner syslogd: unauthorized remote message count: 1000 Apr 24 10:52:17 spinner syslogd: unauthorized remote message count: 10000 [..] I think it'd be interesting to know that somebody was trying to send the packets. It should be possible to count them without blowing up the logs in an attack situation. It would help detect misconfigurations etc if some internal machines were sending logs to the wrong host and so on.
