You're right; there is a parameter in the appletviewer's configuration that can negate the sandbox security model, allowing network connections to others machines to be made. Cafe probably also disables this setting for development (although if you didn't turn it off, that's odd. It should default to using the security model). I noticed your use of 'non-gui applet' before... anything that is run by the command-line 'java' is an application and not subject to security barriers i.e. are you sure you're only trying applets? (public TestClass extends java.applet.Applet?) And nothing would surprise me on NT (I'd personally steer clear of any M$ platform for Java development, not only for technical reasons, but also because of their stance on the Java platform in general). ********************************************************************** Joe Shevland - Horizon Technologies International Email: joe.shevland@horizonti.com We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars - Oscar Wilde ********************************************************************** To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon Feb 23 16:23:30 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id QAA27175 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Mon, 23 Feb 1998 16:23:30 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from lccma.moat.platsol.com (lccma.moat.platsol.com [192.80.81.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id QAA27165 for ; Mon, 23 Feb 1998 16:23:25 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from berg@platsol.com) Received: from lccsd.sd.platsol.com (lccsd.sd.platsol.com [130.200.160.8]) by lccma.moat.platsol.com (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id TAA20678; Mon, 23 Feb 1998 19:23:13 -0500 Received: by lccsd.sd.platsol.com (AIX 4.1/UCB 5.64/4.03) id AA61032; Mon, 23 Feb 1998 16:23:05 -0800 Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 16:23:05 -0800 From: berg@platsol.com (Michael Bergknoff) Message-Id: <9802240023.AA61032@lccsd.sd.platsol.com> To: joe.shevland@horizonti.com Subject: Re: Security exception Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org >> I was wrong about it running on Solaris. It's relatively easy to add a main() method to an applet (class that extends java.applet.Applet), wrap it in a java.awt.Frame and run it from the "java" command. I know its easy to do that, but there still is a big difference between an applet and an application; to expand on this, there's a big difference in how they're executed and what executes them and what they're allowed to do. You can try putting the applet in your CLASSPATH environment setting, making it trusted. Netscape will still create a SecurityManager for these, but if you use the 'file:\\' URL specifier you should be OK. If you want to test it on IE 3.0, God forbid, you can install the classes in, roughly, C:\WINDOWS\JAVA\CLASSES\classes.zip using no compression. Alternatively, the classpath can be edited in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\JavaVM. Sorry, still can't find the appletviewer setting to alter. Maybe it was HotJava?! Hope these may help. ********************************************************************** Joe Shevland - Horizon Technologies International Email: joe.shevland@horizonti.com We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars - Oscar Wilde ********************************************************************** To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon Feb 23 19:57:48 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id TAA00161 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Mon, 23 Feb 1998 19:57:48 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from teel.info-noire.com (XP11-1-2-15.interlinx.qc.ca [207.253.79.55]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA00149; Mon, 23 Feb 1998 19:57:41 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from alex@gel.usherb.ca) Received: from localhost (alex@localhost) by teel.info-noire.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id VAA04970; Mon, 23 Feb 1998 21:13:57 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from alex@teel.info-noire.com) Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 21:13:57 -0500 (EST) From: Alex Boisvert Reply-To: boia01@gel.usherb.ca To: Iyer Mahadevan cc: java@FreeBSD.ORG, saurabh@internetdevices.com, freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG, java-port@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Socket IO problems using Java Sockets on FreeBSD In-Reply-To: <34F1F777.BEC2F180@internetdevices.com> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Mon, 23 Feb 1998, Iyer Mahadevan wrote: > I noticed some serious performance problems with Java Socket I/O. > You problem is due to a "feature" in the kernel... There's an algorithm in the kernel (Nagle's algorithm) which buffers outgoing data up to 200 miliseconds before sending a packet. The reason for this is to reduce the number of packets sent (little fragments of data). There are two ways to deal with this problem. First, you can use a BufferedOutputStream on your Socket and make sure that you call flush() after a request to the server to make sure that your data is sent right away (not after an idle network period of 200 ms) The second alternative (which I have never tried), is to use the TCP_NODELAY option of sockets which completely disables the fragmentation-reduction algorithm. Have a look at the SocketOptions class in java.net.* This is a new feature implemented in JDK 1.1.x. I don't know why Nagle's algorithm is the default... This may be platform-specific. Anyway, this shows up on Windows NT as well. I'm pretty sure Nagle's algorithm is the default for all implementations of TCP/IP purely because of the overhead associated with the various packet headers etc. i.e. be careful with the TCP_NODELAY flag. Interesting to know how much data exactly was used in the benchmarks, and whether 5 samples are enough statistically speaking. ********************************************************************** Joe Shevland - Horizon Technologies International Email: joe.shevland@horizonti.com We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars - Oscar Wilde ********************************************************************** To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon Feb 23 21:50:20 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id VAA10192 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Mon, 23 Feb 1998 21:50:20 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from bangkok.office.cdsnet.net (bangkok.office.cdsnet.net [204.118.245.49]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id VAA10166; Mon, 23 Feb 1998 21:50:18 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from cts@bangkok.office.cdsnet.net) Received: (from cts@localhost) by bangkok.office.cdsnet.net (8.8.8/8.8.5) id VAA11911; Mon, 23 Feb 1998 21:49:51 -0800 (PST) Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 21:49:51 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <199802240549.VAA11911@bangkok.office.cdsnet.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: Craig Spannring To: Iyer Mahadevan Cc: java@FreeBSD.ORG, freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG, saurabh@internetdevices.com Subject: Re: IO Performace problems using Java Sockets on FreeBSD In-Reply-To: <34F20247.DCFAF718@internetdevices.com> References: <34F20247.DCFAF718@internetdevices.com> X-Mailer: VM 6.31 under Emacs 19.34.1 Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org It would be nice to have a bit more info to go on, but my first guess is that you're getting Nagle'd (See RFC 896). (Helpful information would have been things like what type of socket, size of the packets, description of the protocol including any type of lock-step, units of time in the benchmark numbers, and possibly source code.) If the protocol between client and server is over a TCP socket and it sends small packets and each packet must be acknowledged before the next packet is sent then you might be should probably use the TCP_NODELAY option on the connection. Are any errors being printed to the Java console or the status bar? Is the security set to allow Java applets? Try putting some text in between the tags to see if they're being recognised at all. Anyway, for an alternative, download Netscape Communicator from the Netscape site. I haven't had any problems with applets using this. ********************************************************************** Joe Shevland - Horizon Technologies International Email: joe.shevland@horizonti.com We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars - Oscar Wilde ********************************************************************** To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Tue Feb 24 18:28:49 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id SAA07876 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Tue, 24 Feb 1998 18:28:49 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from ns.mt.sri.com (sri-gw.MT.net [206.127.105.141]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id SAA07869 for ; Tue, 24 Feb 1998 18:28:48 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from nate@mt.sri.com) Received: from mt.sri.com (rocky.mt.sri.com [206.127.76.100]) by ns.mt.sri.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id TAA03630; Tue, 24 Feb 1998 19:28:47 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from nate@rocky.mt.sri.com) Received: by mt.sri.com (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id TAA11780; Tue, 24 Feb 1998 19:28:45 -0700 Date: Tue, 24 Feb 1998 19:28:45 -0700 Message-Id: <199802250228.TAA11780@mt.sri.com> From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit To: Jerry Kendall Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Java and 2.2.5R In-Reply-To: <98Feb24.201147est.11650@elgreco.tornd.securecomputing.com> References: <98Feb24.201147est.11650@elgreco.tornd.securecomputing.com> X-Mailer: VM 6.29 under 19.15 XEmacs Lucid Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > I have just installed netscape v3.04 GOLD from the ports collection and > java applets do not want to run. For more information check out: http://www.FreeBSD.org/java/ Of interest: To make a a distribution that works with X/Motif *and* without X, two java/jre binaries are provided. The first is linked without X, and is the standard binary. The second binary is linked against a static version of Motif, and against the shared X libraries. The version used is controlled by the setting of the DISPLAY environment variable, which is used by X to determine where to send the output. Fixed in this release: - X is no longer required to run non-AWT applications (see above). - JDK's built on 2.2.2 should now work again. - The AWT now correctly sets the Window name. - Fixed obscure bug that could cause a core dump if you hit a button in a dialog box multiple times. - Fixed bug where SHMEM wasn't released when using images, causing a leak. In addtion, a JRE and the patches used to build this release are made available. - The FreeBSD Java team To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri Feb 27 08:12:49 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id IAA10468 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Fri, 27 Feb 1998 08:12:49 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from biscayne.american.com (biscayne.american.com [204.253.96.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id IAA10446 for ; Fri, 27 Feb 1998 08:12:45 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from pav6@american.com) Received: from mail2.american.com (mail2.american.com [204.253.96.24]) by biscayne.american.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id LAA20247 for ; Fri, 27 Feb 1998 11:12:14 -0500 (EST) Received: from american.com (QANT40 [204.253.105.66]) by mail2.american.com with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.1960.3) id F2N09XZA; Fri, 27 Feb 1998 11:12:13 -0500 Message-ID: <34F47904.D44FF26C@american.com> Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 20:03:17 +0000 From: pavan reddy X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 [en] (WinNT; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: unsubscribe Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org unsubscribe To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Fri Feb 27 17:51:09 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA19759 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Fri, 27 Feb 1998 17:51:09 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (dingo.cdrom.com [204.216.28.145]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id RAA19754 for ; Fri, 27 Feb 1998 17:51:05 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by dingo.cdrom.com (8.8.8/8.8.5) with ESMTP id RAA29950 for ; Fri, 27 Feb 1998 17:49:49 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <199802280149.RAA29950@dingo.cdrom.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0zeta 7/24/97 To: java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Java applet gets no keystrokes?
