You may or may not want the Netscape ones, and you may have other JAR or ZIP files you want to include. e.g. setenv CLASSPATH .:/usr/local/jdk1.1.7/classes:/usr/local/myjava/myjarfile.jar Joe with his 0.02 worth To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon Dec 21 21:10:46 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id VAA26660 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Mon, 21 Dec 1998 21:10:46 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from ns.mt.sri.com (sri-gw.MT.net [206.127.105.141]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id VAA26655 for ; Mon, 21 Dec 1998 21:10:45 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from nate@mt.sri.com) Received: from mt.sri.com (rocky.mt.sri.com [206.127.76.100]) by ns.mt.sri.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id WAA28052; Mon, 21 Dec 1998 22:10:38 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from nate@rocky.mt.sri.com) Received: by mt.sri.com (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id WAA04370; Mon, 21 Dec 1998 22:10:37 -0700 Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 22:10:37 -0700 Message-Id: <199812220510.WAA04370@mt.sri.com> From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit To: Mike Jeays Cc: Miguel Sierra , "'freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG'" Subject: Re: Java in Freebsd In-Reply-To: References: <211D0157FD1FD21190DB00104B8765E906D0E9@mail> X-Mailer: VM 6.34 under 19.16 "Lille" XEmacs Lucid Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > > I have read a lot about java and have mess a lot with it in Windows > > platforms and all kinds of programs that are done for Windows95 using > > the JDK from Sun. The JDK now has fixes for all bugs specific to the FreeBSD port. (JDK bugs shared with the Solaris port still exist...) Thanks go to Keith White who provided most of the bugfixes for this release. Bugs fixed in this release: - Modulo bug where the wrong sign would be returned when dividing negative long numbers. - The JDK would crash without any idea of the bug when the number of open file descriptors exceeded 256. This number has been bumped to 2048, but it is still statically compiled into the release. - The JRE was missing a number of files, so it should work better. Work still to be done (in progress): 1) JDK for 3.0/ELF (a.out will continue to be supported) 2) JDK1.2 for both a.out/ELF 3) Dynamic file-descriptor fixes so that we can use any number of file-descriptors, since the OS supports this. Thanks, and have a Merry Christmas! - The FreeBSD Java porters To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Mon Dec 21 22:05:53 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id WAA03164 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Mon, 21 Dec 1998 22:05:53 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from ns.mt.sri.com (sri-gw.MT.net [206.127.105.141]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id WAA03159 for ; Mon, 21 Dec 1998 22:05:52 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from nate@mt.sri.com) Received: from mt.sri.com (rocky.mt.sri.com [206.127.76.100]) by ns.mt.sri.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id WAA28335; Mon, 21 Dec 1998 22:50:27 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from nate@rocky.mt.sri.com) Received: by mt.sri.com (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id WAA04538; Mon, 21 Dec 1998 22:50:27 -0700 Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 22:50:27 -0700 Message-Id: <199812220550.WAA04538@mt.sri.com> From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit To: Joe Shevland Cc: "'freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG'" Subject: Re: Java in Freebsd In-Reply-To: <367F2BF5.75863006@TurnAround.com.au> References: <211D0157FD1FD21190DB00104B8765E906D0E9@mail> <199812220510.WAA04370@mt.sri.com> <367F2BF5.75863006@TurnAround.com.au> X-Mailer: VM 6.34 under 19.16 "Lille" XEmacs Lucid Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > Is the new release something to do with the euro support? It would only add one line to the Makefile (and a dependency on unzip). As to the claim about the sources not being much good, well, they're the best documentation there is. I've frequently had to refer to the sources because neither my library reference nor Sun's online documentation adequately documented the semantics of some methods. This is particularly true of higher-level classes; StreamTokenizer is one example that springs to mind. Hmm, I just noticed that appletviewer's shell script is hosed up, and it probably happened when I tried to merge in the changes from Sun. *sigh* I don't have time to reroll a new release as I'm heading off to my parents for Christmas, but the fix is rather easy. in /usr/local/jdk1.1.7/bin/i386/green_threads/appletviewer, the following lines should exist: # Run the applet viewer. We hardware the debugger's class -- oh well. # curdir=`dirname $0` # This line is missing... if test "$debugging" = "true" then if [ -x $curdir/java_g_X ]; then .... curdir should be set else the appletviewer won't work. :( Try that change and let me know (soonish... :) Nate To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Tue Dec 22 08:07:15 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id IAA08344 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Tue, 22 Dec 1998 08:07:15 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from ns.mt.sri.com (sri-gw.MT.net [206.127.105.141]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id IAA08328 for ; Tue, 22 Dec 1998 08:07:09 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from nate@mt.sri.com) Received: from mt.sri.com (rocky.mt.sri.com [206.127.76.100]) by ns.mt.sri.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id JAA02477; Tue, 22 Dec 1998 09:07:05 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from nate@rocky.mt.sri.com) Received: by mt.sri.com (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id JAA06153; Tue, 22 Dec 1998 09:07:04 -0700 Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 09:07:04 -0700 Message-Id: <199812221607.JAA06153@mt.sri.com> From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit To: Dag-Erling Smorgrav Cc: Nate Williams , freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: JDK1.1.7.V98-12-21 released In-Reply-To: References: <199812220541.WAA04451@mt.sri.com> <199812221535.IAA06007@mt.sri.com> X-Mailer: VM 6.34 under 19.16 "Lille" XEmacs Lucid Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > > > 1) install the source code under ${PREFIX}/jdk1.1.7/src instead of > > > leaving it packed > > > > This is how Sun distributes it. Each file takes up a minimum of 4K, and since there are so many of them 'bundling' them together is better than not. > As to the claim about the sources not being much good, well, they're > the best documentation there is. I disagree. I've rarely had to look at them, and I've been doing this professionally for well over 2 years. If you need good documentation, get the Chan & Lee books. They're much better than the on-line stuff. The sources are much harder to peruse. Personally, I would not install the source code unpacked. not everyone has lots of disk space, and it's an optional part. Many folks want to snoop (you and me, for example) but putting a note to that effect in a set of readme echoes, or maybe a readme file (README.FreeBSD in $(PREFIX)/java perhaps, would be my suggestion) would do just as good, and be seen by anyone who was curious enough to take a look. I can't imagine anyone who would look at source code, but not be curious enough to find that. Nate, your previous post alluded to a 1.2 port .... I'm extremely curious now, is there any real chance of that? I thought Sun hadn't been willing to release the sources. I know of another porting project for FreeBSD as well, so maybe that one will get off the ground quicker. Some background first. I'm in charge for the upkeep on QUITE a few Lucent PM3-2T's at an Eastern Pa. ISP, Enter.Net. Lucent has Java software called PMvision to manage those terminal servers that I would like to run under FreeBSD like I run under Windoze, and for the life of me I can't get it to work. The software is available via anonymous FTP at ftp.livingston.com/pub/le/software/java, file name of either pmvision_12.unix.tar.gz or pmvision13b5_unix.tar.gz (they both won't work when I try them). I have followed all the install instructions for the FreeBSD jre and the PMvision files, and when I try to run/install them I get the following: (dh):/usr/home/dh> cd /pmvision (dh):/pmvision> ./pmvision Undefined symbol "_xmDrawingAreaWidgetClass" in jre:/usr/jdk1.1.7/lib/i386/green_threads/libawt.so (libawt.so) java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no awt in shared library path at java.lang.Runtime.loadLibrary(Runtime.java) at java.lang.System.loadLibrary(System.java) at at java.awt.Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit(Toolkit.java:394) at java.awt.Window.getToolkit(Window.java:230) at java.awt.Frame.addNotify(Frame.java:203) at LEConsole.addNotify(LEConsole.java:198) at java.awt.Window.show(Window.java:145) at java.awt.Component.show(Component.java:511) at java.awt.Component.setVisible(Component.java:473) at LEConsole.(LEConsole.java:158) at LEConsole.Display(LEConsole.java:90) at Amber.main(Amber.java:44) ^CException in thread "main" (dh):/pmvision> As you can see, I have to ^C to get out after all of the errors.
