You can try some of the other plugins available at http://xine.sourceforge.net -- these don't require recompiling of xine, so won't interfere with the existing port. It's covered briefly in the handbook: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/sound-mp3.html Personally, I'd say that ``dagrab'' has worked very well for me, for ripping the audio tracks into .WAV's. For encoding them to .MP3's I usually use GOGO (which is AFAIK the fastest encoder available for the i386 platform, yet still it produces good output). GOGO is based on LAME but with added optimizations; it's able to encode at ~30X speed on my Athlon 1400 MHz, IIRC. :-) I personally don't think that you will have a problem with the output quality of GOGO, but if you do, I guess you can check out LAME (although GOGO is supposed to be based on it). Well, I don't see any reason for not using cdda2wav if it both works better and runs faster. :-) I wonder if those errors you are getting are due to the CD being faulty and cdda2wav doing better error correction or if it's a bug in dagrab. I've never had any problems with such errors... You could try with some other CD's and see if you still get the same kind of errors; if you do, I guess a PR would be appropriate. Attached. It was very straightforward. I'm also CC'ing the author (Simon Quinn), in case he'd like to incorporate it into his tree. In summary: The attached patch adds a new ripping scheme to ripit. It uses capabilities of FreeBSD's ATAPI driver (4.4-RELEASE and higher) to directly extract CDDA without 3rd-party tools. Tested on 4.4-RELEASE with lame as an encoder. It's not the most beautiful code, but hey. GOGO is based upon an older version of LAME, I don't know if they ported recent quality improvements of LAME (maybe someone on the mp3encode mailinglist is able to tell more, please don't forget to readd multimedia@freebsd.org to the CC). You may perhaps want to look at the history/ChangeLog of both projects and decide yourself (the newest release (3.91, available in ${PORTSDIR}/audio/lame) of LAME has a lot of quality improvements compared to the previous stable release (3.7x), it's easy to hear them even for untrained ears). Anyways, the problem I'm seeing now is that during startup of rat, the system freezes for ~2-4 seconds and rat terminates itself after the freeze. During the freeze I can't even get into DDB. Wild guess: maybe it's a interrupt storm. I tracked it down to the FIONREAD in auddev_newpcm.c:newpcm_audio_is_ready(). If I insert a usleep() before or after the ioctl there's no problem. Even a usleep(1) is sufficient on my system (P3-800, ES1370). I put a modifed rat "port" at http://defiant.vmunix.org/~torstenb/rat.tar.gz The code in question is rat/files/auddev_newpcm.c Anyways, I'm not familar with /sys/dev/sound at all. Does anyone have an idea what's causing this ? -tb To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Wed Jan 30 14:28:41 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mail.oanet.com (mars.oanet.com [204.209.13.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 66C7E37B416 for ; Wed, 30 Jan 2002 14:28:39 -0800 (PST) Received: from PENEK (dialin-207-153-27-85.edm.oa.net [207.153.27.85]) by mail.oanet.com (8.11.5/8.11.5) with ESMTP id g0UMnFk03226; Wed, 30 Jan 2002 15:49:15 -0700 Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2002 15:28:28 -0700 From: soralx@cydem.zp.ua X-Mailer: The Bat! I rebuilt mpg123 with OPT_ARCH=i486 and the buffering works just fine now. At the time I was actually doing something with `lame' beyond compiling and using it, which was more than a year ago, with machines slower than today's by something like an order of magnitude, I did some speed and quality comparisons of `gogo' vs `lame', and what surprised me was that lame had gotten much faster to the point where simple options given to it made it nearly as fast as gogo on the hardware I used. The home page for gogo refers to `petit' which is apparently based on 3.8x lame, but does not seem to be available as a port, and I haven't looked at it at all. The documentation on the page for gogo gives its base as lame 3.29 plus some improvements of the 3.5x series, so it looks like the more recent improvements are probably not in gogo, but `petit' may be worth a look, for those who are interested or maybe need speed. > ${PORTSDIR}/audio/lame) of LAME has a lot of quality improvements > compared to the previous stable release (3.7x), it's easy to hear them > even for untrained ears). Even back then, I could easily hear that lame (3.6wozzit?) gave a much higher quality signal, being only slightly slower. On the other hand, while I had one machine encoding three or so real- time high quality streams with CBR and lame, I was running another machine at max to encode a VBR stream, and not at highest quality. It is possible to use different types of encoding that require much more horsepower than `gogo' but deliver quite tangible improvements, such as VBR and ABR encoding, or to select encoding options that give more quality at the expense of CPU power. Today I'm using ABR encoding, easy enough as fast as throwaway PCs are today, to do in realtime with plenty of room to spare. This may be five or ten times slower than `gogo' was, but it's worth it. The idle time of machines today is ... something to be put to use. It could perhaps be that I didn't see a tremendous difference in speed between `gogo' and `lame' since I wasn't compiling them optimally, or my hardware couldn't offer all possible improvements, and naturally my comments are based on long-dated k0deZ, if gogo has received substantial updates in the last year or more. barry bouwsma, netscum To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Fri Feb 1 7:45:34 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from linuxmail.touchtunes.com (operator.touchtunes.com [216.94.139.201]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 79DF637B405 for ; Fri, 1 Feb 2002 07:44:57 -0800 (PST) Received: from sunder.touchtunes.com (sunder.touchtunes.com [192.168.0.26]) by linuxmail.touchtunes.com (8.9.3/8.8.7) with ESMTP id KAA08136 for ; Fri, 1 Feb 2002 10:44:56 -0500 Received: (from dinjo@localhost) by sunder.touchtunes.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) id g11Fing28596 for freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org; Fri, 1 Feb 2002 10:44:49 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from dinjo) Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2002 10:44:49 -0500 From: Joel Dinel To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Playmidi & SBLive Message-ID: <20020201104449.A28042@sunder.touchtunes.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5.1i X-Useless-Header: Look ma, it's a # sign! I don't think FreeBSD supports the MIDI on the SBLive (or any MIDI for that matter in 4.x yet. If you want to play MIDI files, look into a program called timidity++ in the ports. -- \ |_ _|__ __|_ \ __| Jason Andresen jandrese@mitre.org |\/ | | | / _| Network and Distributed Systems Engineer _| _|___| _| _|_\___| Office: 703-883-7755 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Fri Feb 1 10:22:34 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from jupiter.linuxengine.net (jupiter2.linuxengine.net [209.61.188.254]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9B52A37B400 for ; Fri, 1 Feb 2002 10:22:29 -0800 (PST) Received: from jupiterweb.commercevault.com (jupiterweb.commercevault.com [209.61.179.16] (may be forged)) by jupiter.linuxengine.net (8.11.6/8.11.0) with ESMTP id g11IMMv20585; Fri, 1 Feb 2002 12:22:22 -0600 Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2002 12:22:22 -0600 (CST) From: John Utz X-X-Sender: john@jupiter.linuxengine.net To: Joel Dinel Cc: freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Playmidi & SBLive In-Reply-To: <20020201104449.A28042@sunder.touchtunes.com> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org i am unaware of any midi functionality in FreeBSD, per se. various patches have been made, but never integrated. you could use timidity. it's a userland midi player. Yup, it records audio. It even lets you select from a number of different formats for the audio. The one "hassle" is that it records raw bits of audio and video - possibly interleaving video across multiple drives for extra performance - and then runs a script to convert those to your desired format. That takes a bit of time. http://www.mired.org/home/mwm/ Independent WWW/Perforce/FreeBSD/Unix consultant, email for more information. Look at http://www.freshports.org/port-description.php3?port=6298. WITH_CSS worked upto 0.9.7 where I was able to playback encrypted DVD's. With 0.9.8 I'm no longer able to do so. > > No, but they require compile on FBSD, and that's a problem because it's > > never a matter of './configure ; make'. I must admit it's been awhile since I played around with plugins for xine. It was prior to 0.9.2 and never got anything working then. I'd used it earlier with xine 0.9.5 or something and it worked fine then. I don't think dvdnav should be the problem -- it just handles decrypting (which is only done when first accessing a track) and menus, the actual playback depends on the "regular" xine. - Rahul To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Sat Feb 2 3:47: 9 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from fepF.post.tele.dk (fepF.post.tele.dk [195.41.46.135]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1107B37B400 for ; Sat, 2 Feb 2002 03:46:56 -0800 (PST) Received: from there ([62.243.18.60]) by fepF.post.tele.dk (InterMail vM.4.01.03.23 201-229-121-123-20010418) with SMTP id <20020202114654.KMEF1982.fepF.post.tele.dk@there> for ; Sat, 2 Feb 2002 12:46:54 +0100 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" From: Bjarne Wichmann Petersen To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Problemer med at logge =?iso-8859-1?q?p=E5?= NetBank Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 12:48:24 +0100 X-Mailer: KMail [version 1.3.2] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Message-Id: <20020202114654.KMEF1982.fepF.post.tele.dk@there> Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hej Da Roskilde Bank her i det nye år skiftede til en opdateret NetBank har jeg ikke kunnet få adgang til NetBank. Assuming by "that", you mean using multiple drives? I'll quote the readme: [You can] specify up to four different files to interleave raw video/audio capture to. If you point these resources to paths on different disks, you'll get much higher bandwidth than you would with just one disk (the default). http://www.mired.org/home/mwm/ Independent WWW/Perforce/FreeBSD/Unix consultant, email for more information.
