I'm trying to boot a picobsd image created from the 4.6-stable tree. I just ran /usr/src/release/picobsd/build/picobsd and built the default bridge configuration. This produced a picobsd.bin file. I installed this file on a floppy using dd as per the instructions in the picobsd man page, but when I boot from it, I only get a blank screen with the message "read error". No other messages or output. I've tried installing it on a several different floppies and a also a hard drive. I've tried booting it on several different machines, always with the same result. If I mount the floppy, it has a single file named kernel on it. Has anyone successfully built a picobsd image from 4.6-stable? Am I doing something wrong? l8r Aaron To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Tue Jul 9 4:41:13 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4D23C37B400 for ; Tue, 9 Jul 2002 04:41:11 -0700 (PDT) Received: from jhs.muc.de (pD9E4D618.dip.t-dialin.net [217.228.214.24]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A89C843E42 for ; Tue, 9 Jul 2002 04:41:09 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jhs@jhs.muc.de) Received: from lapa.jhs.private (lapa.jhs.private [192.168.91.45]) by jhs.muc.de (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id g69BfWg04348; Tue, 9 Jul 2002 13:41:32 +0200 (MET DST) (envelope-from jhs@jhs.muc.de) Received: from lapa.jhs.private (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by lapa.jhs.private (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id g69BfLm00542; Tue, 9 Jul 2002 11:41:21 GMT (envelope-from jhs@lapa.jhs.private) Message-Id: <200207091141.g69BfLm00542@lapa.jhs.private> To: "Amy Shaftoe" Cc: freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Perhaps a new "distribution"? If someone adds a `mini' install option, it will look good, reducing FreeBSD's "Minimum Hardware Requirements" description. Just to upgrade though, it's not necessary to have enough RAM to run FreeBSD's floppy/CD installer (was 5M to install, 4M to boot when last I needed to check years ago). Instead, just copy new bins & kernel into parallel directories /4.6 /usr/4.6 & /var/4.6 (via PLIP, SLIP, ether, cdrom or floppy), then `cp /bin/mv /mv;/mv` old stuff out in this order /var, /usr, /, & reboot. Only for the experienced, get anything wrong & reboot can fail ! > MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: > http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx Microsoft merits no free advertising on this FreeBSD list. However, it is definitely a case that you install it onto media, then install the media into the embedded system. It deals with the target media varying from piece to piece (just try to buy CF parts with the same geometry over a period of 6 months). It just isn't worth trying to make it so that the embedded system can do the install itself. I have it setup with a 2Meg memory file system. It's customized for my hardware, including support for an Aironet 802.11b wireless pcmcia card. It has sshd and syslogd running and also has the ee editor. It has about 200k of space left over on the memory file system and about 500k of free memory for running applications. I'm using it as a diskless wireless router. So far it's working great. l8r Aaron To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message
