The mirroring idea behind rsync and cvsup is to reduce human interaction, not to increase it. Why should the world out there start editing text files, if there's a new platform/collection to add? IMVHO, it would make sense to spend a few inodes on ftp-master for semaphore files that serve as timestamp and subcollection identifiers. - These files must not contain with a dot, rather with an underscore ('_mirror_data'), as this would retain their visibility on the different mirror's systems - The files' contents can be used for additional meta data - The files' locations are in their corresponding collections' subdirectories - The timestamp of these files is reset every half hour by feeding a find output or file list into 'xargs touch' - A master collection list can be compiled by a simple find command - An automated collection cataloger can the retrieve the collection identifier files from the mirrors - Retrieval results can be compiled to a comprehensive mirror directory and/or to a sysinstall mirror list - Retrieval results can be compiled into detailed statistics on who mirrors what and when and in which mode - Using the refined information, heavily lagged mirrors or unmaintained mirrors find their way out of the list automagically (for example, based on thresholds, with different levels of deactivation) This solution would be - simple - flexible - extensible - clean - interesting Please tell me what you think. We've recently noticed a problem with the ls-lR.gz file on ftp.freebsd.org - it doesn't seem to accurately reflect the tree found on the server. This is causing problems for our mirroring software which takes the ls-lR.gz file as the definitive list of files available and pulls them from one (or more) servers. A specific example is the directory /pub/FreeBSD/branches/-current. On ftp.freebsd.org this only contains a single tar file, but in the ls-lR file there's a whole tree of files. My guess is that the ls-lR.gz file is generate on ftp-master, and ftp.freebsd.org isn't quite in sync with it? Don't mirror from ftp.freebsd.org. That server should only handle clients. Use ftp.uk at least, if not ftp-master. In any case, this most likely means the ftp.freebsd.org mirror is probably not mirroring the source trees directly, but rather locally and then tarring up the result to reduce directory I/O. I didn't set this up originally. I think the original person presumed ftp.freebsd.org was the master. As far as I am aware we do not have access to ftp-master - we'd be happy to use this if we could. As you say, the other option is to mirror from ftp.uk. I'll suggest this to my colleagues. However, the original point was that the site was not in sync with the ls-lR file. I presumed, maybe wrongly, that this was "not normal" which is why I pointed it out. Cheers, Tim. At ftp7.de.freebsd.org, we do not mirror the ls-lR.gz file, but instead we generate it ourselves (via cron, once per night), so it reflects our actual content (which is more than ftp-master). Same for the dir.sizes file. I don't know how fast between this box and other European mirrors is. Update period from ftp-master in U.S. is currently every 3 hours, but it will be more frequent. So, please raise your hand if you feel slow connectivity against ftp-master in U.S. If you drop a mail to Cejka, ACL will be updated. This ACL maybe synchronized with master ACL in the future. How do we stand on this? My understanding is: o ftp-master.freebsd.org is an option, but a seperate tree would be nice, o current.freebsd.org is also an option according to Kris, o Of course the individual mirrors. Would be nice to have ftp-master.eu.freebsd.org. I noticed there is already ftp.eu.freebsd.org (points to one of the German mirrors), but it doesn't seem to allow anonymous login right now. I run freebsdmirrors.org. Sorry for not resposning earlier but I've been on holidays and out of reach of my E-mail. If you see DNS transfers from the 203.32.61.* IP range then that's the FreeBSD mirror DB updating the list of mirrors. This starts running at 4am Melbourne time and takes about an hours or so. If people don't want me interogating their DNS servers, let me know and I'll exclude your part of the DNS from the database. Cheers Gavin PS why the hell did aunic.net included on the list? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jarrod Sayers" To: "'Evren Yurtesen'" ; Cc: ; Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 5:36 PM Subject: RE: > That's funny, that box also keeps trying to transfer buga.au.freebsd.org too! > > Jarrod. > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: Evren Yurtesen [mailto:yurtesen@ispro.net.tr] > > Sent: Tuesday, 21 January 2003 4:42 PM > > To: hubs@freebsd.org > > Cc: richard.edwards@itworks.com.au; nobody@aunic.net > > Subject: > > > > > > messages.0.gz:Jan 20 19:16:42 finland named[1715]: denied > > AXFR from [203.32.61.3].2149 for "tr.freebsd.org" IN (acl) > > messages.5.gz:Jan 19 19:19:51 finland named[1715]: denied > > AXFR from [203.32.61.3].1874 for "tr.freebsd.org" IN (acl) > > > > Hi > > > > I am getting the messages above routinely for the > > tr.freebsd.org domain. > > anybody knows the owner of mercury.itworks.com.au ?
