However, whenever I "up" one of the nics, there is a slight delay of a few seconds before the command completes, also the nic is not operating in up state yet, appr. 30 seconds passes before traffic actually can pass in/out .. It happens regardless if there is a cable attached to the nic. I find this rather spooky. Has anyone using the em driver experienced this? Other than being spooky it causes a problem with the box in question, since syslogd and other daemons times out at boot-up. Please include my email in any replies. By default the driver, when in auto-negotiate mode, hangs for a long time when you bring it up until negotiation is complete. Another option for you may be to force the duplex & speed with ifconfig when you bring it up. I do it here ;-) I've heard of Exim, although I have not used it. I am more familiar with mail systems like Cyrus, as well as it's predecessor, the Andrew Message System, and Courier. I remember MMDF, which CMU was using way back when, and I'd even worked on a SMTP-to-X.400 gateway product back in the early 90's. For choice, I'd spend my time on this list helping people rather than debating terminology, but that's only a preference. If you want to say that Exim has "MTA-imposed quota", fine. (*) In the future, please try to mention important details instead of expecting people to guess that you weren't using FreeBSD's default MTA. -- -Chuck (*): I find the distinction between the various components of a mail system-- the "MTA", "LDA", "MUA", and related software like a "POP3" or "IMAP" server-- to be well-defined and meaningful. Exim handles per-user quotas for mailboxes. However, the part of Exim which does SMTP-- the MTA-- doesn't perform local delivery, does it? I am assuming that you have the em driver compiled in your Kernel (I think its in GENERIC in 4.8). Here is what I did to combat the similar problem. Take the ifconfig_em(x) and defaultrouter out of the rc.conf. Make a simple if_up.sh script in /usr/local/etc/rc.d to bring up your interfaces and bring up your default route. I run a sleep command in mine for 5 seconds to give other services time to load before I bring up the interfaces. Syslog should come up regardless of network services, unless you are doing remote syslog. Either way, the above worked for me. If that doesn't work, check to make sure you have the em driver compiled in your Kernel. Sounds like its trying to kldload the em driver, therefore making your services not start in the process (no network activity). If it is loading the module at boot up, then make the above script, but load the module at the top. Its all the same. Just an idea. Not saying it the right thing to do, but its one that worked for me. I tried this but still experienced waiting over 1 minute when bringing up the nic. However, problem disappeared when I hooked the nic into a Netgear switch instead of the older 48 port Cisco Catalyst 2849 switch. It seems the lag was caused by the switch-end trying to negotiate, even with the nic having auto-negotiation disabled and forced settings. Mail is being transferred. If you want to use sendmail as a point of reference, then yes, sendmail does handle local delivery. It does so with exactly one delivery mechinism: the pipe. I would argue that the MTA (mail transfer agent) has nothing at all to do with SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol), which is simply a mechanism for clients to talk to servers and for servers to talk to other servers. What if I run sendmail in such a way that it's not listening for network connections? I have perl code somewhere that actually does this right - it treats everything between the VirtualHost lines as a record, and can pull all of the per-site config from it. For most things like this in Awk, you need to know 3 things: awk '{ print $3 }' will print field 3 (whitespace seperated) awk '{ printf("Hello %s\n", $3 }' you can use C-style printf for formatting echo "1X2X3X4" | awk -F X '{ print $2 }' field seperator is "X" You can get more fancy: Input is: "print this line" "not this line" # Only print the line with the word "print" in it: awk '/print/ { print $0 }' $0 represents the entire line, so awk searches (/) for "print" and for each matching line, prints it. Get much more complicated than this and just "use Perl;" :) Good luck. > # ls /www/*/logs/*.access_log > > generates... > > /www/user1/.logs/user1domain1.com.access_log > /www/user1/.logs/user1domain2.com.access_log > /www/user2/.logs/user2domain1.com.access_log > /www/user2/.logs/user2domain2.com.access_log > /www/user3/.logs/user3domain1.com.access_log > /www/user3/.logs/user3domain2.com.access_log > > what I am trying to script is something that does; > > > for i in /www/*/logs/*.access_log; > ereg (user)(domain_name) from $i; > do webalizer -n $domain_name -o /www/$user/stats/; > done > > > ...as this would eliminate human error in maintaining a file which contains the > appropriate lines to handle this via cron or something every night. > > This is one example, there are a slew of other similar applications that I would > use this for. have played with awk as well, just can't wrap my head around this > (not a shell scripting person by trade). > > Any guidance or insight would be appreciated. > > Dave > > > _______________________________________________ > freebsd-isp@freebsd.org mailing list > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-isp > To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-isp-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" > Adam Maloney Systems Administrator Sihope Communications From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 27 06:48:39 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5B6CC37B401 for ; Tue, 27 May 2003 06:48:39 -0700 (PDT) Received: from imhotep.yuckfou.org (cust.89.117.adsl.cistron.nl [195.64.89.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 666D043FAF for ; Tue, 27 May 2003 06:48:37 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from nivo+freebsd-isp@yuckfou.org) Received: by imhotep.yuckfou.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id BBE85A980; Tue, 27 May 2003 15:48:26 +0200 (CEST) Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 15:48:26 +0200 From: Nils Vogels To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20030527134826.GN10795@imhotep.yuckfou.org> References: <2217.148.243.211.187.1054021261.squirrel@mail.unixmexico.com> <1054021870.3ed318ee732fb@www.digitalinscription.net> <2404.148.243.211.187.1054023759.squirrel@mail.unixmexico.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <2404.148.243.211.187.1054023759.squirrel@mail.unixmexico.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-PGP-Key: Key 0xAD3A5AAD from pub. servers X-PGP-Fingerprint: 1585 93A2 9595 177B 5D5F 1271 3333 57FD AD3A 5AAD Subject: Re: replicating data over 2 servers X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 13:48:39 -0000 On Tue, May 27, 2003 at 03:22:39AM -0500, nbari@unixmexico.com () wrote: > the problem when using rsync in both servers is that if data on server A > is updated, and data on server B is updated at the same time, there is a > chance to lost data. (It also works on OSX to some extent, but it does not yet deal with 'resource forks' correctly; more information on OSX usage can be found on the unison-users mailing list archives.) It allows two replicas of a collection of files and directories to be stored on different hosts (or different disks on the same host), modified separately, and then brought up to date by propagating the changes in each replica to the other. Unison shares a number of features with tools such as configuration management packages (CVS, PRCS, etc.), distributed filesystems (Coda, etc.), uni-directional mirroring utilities (rsync, etc.), and other synchronizers (Intellisync, Reconcile, etc). However, there are several points where it differs: [...] It's in /usr/ports/net/unison From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 27 07:55:45 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6C28137B404 for ; Tue, 27 May 2003 07:55:45 -0700 (PDT) Received: from accounts.amigo.net (smtp.amigo.net [209.94.64.30]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1401C43F3F for ; Tue, 27 May 2003 07:55:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from randys@amigo.net) Received: from stalker.amigo.net ([209.94.67.250]) by accounts.amigo.net with esmtp; Tue, 27 May 2003 08:55:43 -0600 Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 08:57:04 -0600 (MDT) From: Randy Smith X-X-Sender: randy@stalker.amigo.net To: ODHIAMBO Washington In-Reply-To: <20030523161900.GA12569@ns2.wananchi.com> Message-ID: <20030527085232.S1529-100000@stalker.amigo.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: "freebsd-isp@freebsd.org" Subject: Re: Expiring old mail in Maildir/ X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 14:55:45 -0000 On Fri, 23 May 2003, ODHIAMBO Washington wrote: > Date: Fri, 23 May 2003 19:19:00 +0300 > From: ODHIAMBO Washington > To: "freebsd-isp@freebsd.org" > Subject: Expiring old mail in Maildir/ > > > Hiya ISP Admins, > > > Apart from using `find`, I am wondering if someone already owns the wheel > that can expire mail older than N number of days from users Maildir. > I used to use one by Phil Male of Information Systems Engineering Group > which was well adapted for mbox-type mailboxes, but now I have changed to > Maildir/ > > Thanks in advance for any pointers. > > > -Wash > > I wrote a script to clean out users' Spam folders. SMTP wasn't really intended as a mechanism for clients (*) to talk to servers; it's a mechanism for one mail server to exchange messages with another mail server over IPC. (*): The term "client" is overloaded here; if by client you meant "MUA", then clients talk IMAP or POP to mail servers to read mail, and often use SMTP to send mail, but MUAs can also send outgoing mail via MSP (587/tcp) or by calling the MTA directly via fork() as well. > What if I run sendmail in such a way that it's not listening for network > connections? We did sucessfully install the OS from an ISP and it seemed to go fine. Another amd I had before this one had FreeBSD 4.8-RC installed and would lock up just like this one, with no errors or cores or anything at 'od' times, when nothing much was running. We upgraded to latest versions of apache, sendmail, mysql, etc to see if that was it, and it wasnt. We then assumed it could be over heating and placed a fan in it... so far it seems to be working. The new machine has tons of fans in it, and shouldnt be over heating at all. Is there any suggestions you guys can give me as to what might be causing the problems? We did mem tests, hd tests, and all came out to be fine. Any help would be appreciated. -anthony From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 27 15:35:53 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 92C9437B401 for ; Tue, 27 May 2003 15:35:53 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ns.dixons.org (ns.dixons.org [217.199.172.227]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4496D43F75 for ; Tue, 27 May 2003 15:35:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jdd@dixons.org) Received: from localhost (jdd@localhost) by ns.dixons.org (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id h4RLX1O18858 for ; Tue, 27 May 2003 22:33:01 +0100 Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 22:33:01 +0100 (BST) From: Jim Dixon To: In-Reply-To: <2217.148.243.211.187.1054021261.squirrel@mail.unixmexico.com> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Subject: Re: replicating data over 2 servers X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 22:35:53 -0000 On Tue, 27 May 2003 nbari@unixmexico.com wrote: > hi all, i have to servers (A, B) with round robin DNS, users enter to > server A and server B and they write to a txt file, how can i sync the > file from both server so it can be always the same? for example if a user > enter to server A and modify some data, replicate that modification to > server B so when user enter to server B he can see his changes, and the > same if user modify a file on server B, replicate that file to server A, > any idea? We need more information. How often does the data get changed? How much delay is tolerable? Are the two servers on the same LAN or in different places on the Internet? Most important, how do you define "the same"? Is it tolerable if the servers are out of sync for a few milliseconds? for a few seconds? minutes? You probably need a protocol for writing like this: 1 lock local copy of data 2 lock remote copy of data 3 write new values 4 unlock remote copy 5 unlock local copy This guarantees that data on the two servers will be consistent. For better performance (less delay perceived by the user): 1 read-lock local copy (ie, no writing permitted, but reading OK) 2 write-lock remote copy (no reading, no writing) 3 write-lock local copy 4 update values 5 drop local lock to read-lock 6 unlock remote copy 7 unlock local copy You can elaborate the protocol to allow for server failures. Dealing with network failures is more interesting. You could do this with a Perl script and ssh without much trouble, assuming that the data was coarse-grained, ideally a single item ;-) If the data has a complex structure and there is lots of it, then you probably need a distributed database. -- Jim Dixon jdd@dixons.org tel +44 117 982 0786 mobile +44 797 373 7881 From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 27 18:46:45 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B376337B401 for ; Tue, 27 May 2003 18:46:45 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.arc.net.my (nagano.arc.net.my [203.115.225.22]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9538043F85 for ; Tue, 27 May 2003 18:46:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from nick@arc.net.my) Received: from roponggi (roppongi.arc.net.my [203.115.225.83]) by mail.arc.net.my (iPlanet Messaging Server 5.1 Patch 1 (built Jun 6 2002)) with SMTP id <0HFK00IK8Q9ULF@mail.arc.net.my> for freebsd-isp@freebsd.org; Wed, 28 May 2003 09:46:43 +0800 (SGT) Date: Wed, 28 May 2003 09:44:48 +0800 From: Nick Kraal To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Message-id: <001701c324ba$b93856a0$53e173cb@arc.net.my> MIME-version: 1.0 X-MIMEOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1165 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1158 Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-priority: Normal Subject: FreeBSD/iPAQ X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Nick Kraal List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 28 May 2003 01:46:46 -0000 Has anyone had any experience/success installing FreeBSD on an iPAQ? If it is apache, you could use something like this: grep 'ServerName' > tmp then: pico tmp Once in pico, hit ctrl-c .. *shrug*.. that will tell you how many lines are in the file.. should be one (or more) for each domain name.. Again.. I would recommend you go by income / accounting records, not by webserver config.. that can be easily configured for anything the isp wants to configure it for.. it doesn't mean the domain name is actually hosted their.. you'd have to whois them all to verify that. Have you considered switching to Maildir delivery? Tpop can do this natively and will likely perform much better than it is now. Timeouts may still occur on large messages, but the locking issues will go away immediately. FWIW, I've been very happy with Courier-IMAP, which includes a POP3 server. Authentication from MySQL is trivial to set up (there's a config that you can define your own query to return the necessary authentication information). Google hasn't come up with anything yet, but I'm famous for not using the right search words. Why do I need to do this, you ask? I've been trying to move one of my customers off a Cobalt RaQ4 onto a FreeBSD box. (They were hacked twice in one week with all the patches installed. Those two times made 4 root compromises of the box in the past year and a half and they saw the light.) I currently have them up on a RedHat box using a couple of the Cobalt binaries. Getting them up on the Linux box was about 24 man-hours of config massaging and directory correlation once I gave up and used two binaries from the compromised Cobalt. That is in addition to the time spent in RPM hunting hell. All of the Cobalt packages were really old versions of opensource packages. Most of that config massaging is paying off in the move from Linux to FreeBSD. The biggest problems in bringing this system over to the FreeBSD box are the Cobalt specific cgiwrap and majordomo wrapper binaries. I think I've massaged the majordomo configs around to where they will work without the Cobalt wrapper program and it's virtual hosting additions. We'll find out when we go live. :-( I haven't gotten to the cgiwrap binary yet. So far I plan to replace it with suexec or the non-Cobalt cgiwrap. But I am not far enough into it to know if that will work without a lot of other changes. They tell me they don't have a lot of CGI so I'm leaving that for last. Right now, I am working on trying to upgrade the sendmail.cf file from 8.9 to 8.12 to make newaliases work and to ease future maintainability. I never learned to read the sendmail.cf language beyond the basics, and don't know the one to one mapping of mc rule to cf rule blocks. -- Scott Lambert KC5MLE Unix SysAdmin lambert@lambertfam.org From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Thu May 29 13:27:20 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2F84E37B401 for ; Thu, 29 May 2003 13:27:20 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.lambertfam.org (www.lambertfam.org [216.223.208.55]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9962E43FA3 for ; Thu, 29 May 2003 13:27:19 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from lambert@lambertfam.org) Received: from laptop.lambertfam.org (laptop.int.lambertfam.org [10.1.0.2]) by mail.lambertfam.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B151434D2D for ; Thu, 29 May 2003 16:27:17 -0400 (EDT) Received: by laptop.lambertfam.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 2B264837C; Thu, 29 May 2003 16:27:01 -0400 (EDT) Date: Thu, 29 May 2003 16:27:01 -0400 From: Scott Lambert To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20030529202701.GB28104@laptop.lambertfam.org> Mail-Followup-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org References: <20030529201115.GA28104@laptop.lambertfam.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20030529201115.GA28104@laptop.lambertfam.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i Subject: Re: OT: create a sendmail.mc file from a sendmail.cf file? Considering the extent of the m4 changes between 8.9.3 and 8.12.x it pretty much can't be done even by hand, but the following will give you the list of the FEATURE()s used, which is a reasonable starting point for a new .mc file: 3-sec# fgrep '$Id:' sendmail.cf ##### $Id: cfhead.m4,v 8.108.2.2 2003/03/11 21:24:20 ca Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: cf.m4,v 8.32 1999/02/07 07:26:14 gshapiro Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: freebsd4.m4,v 1.1 2001/03/21 22:44:58 ca Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: generic.m4,v 8.15 1999/04/04 00:51:09 ca Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: redirect.m4,v 8.15 1999/08/06 01:47:36 gshapiro Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: use_cw_file.m4,v 8.11 2001/08/26 20:58:57 gshapiro Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: access_db.m4,v 8.24 2002/03/06 21:50:25 ca Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: blacklist_recipients.m4,v 8.13 1999/04/02 02:25:13 gshapiro Exp $ # #### ##### $Id: local_lmtp.m4,v 8.16 2000/08/18 18:58:45 ca Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: mailertable.m4,v 8.23 2001/03/16 00:51:26 gshapiro Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: virtusertable.m4,v 8.21 2001/03/16 00:51:26 gshapiro Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: proto.m4,v 8.649.2.17 2003/03/28 17:20:53 ca Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: local.m4,v 8.58 2000/10/26 01:58:29 ca Exp $ ##### ##### $Id: smtp.m4,v 8.64 2001/04/03 01:52:54 gshapiro Exp $ ##### You then generate a .cf file from the current version of sendmail, compare it to the old .cf you have, update the .mc file if there was something you see in the diffs, and repeat until you are happy. > Why do I need to do this, you ask? The approach you're taking is sort of like figuring out the right direction to head in, then walking the exact opposite way. Sure, the earth is a sphere and if you keep going long enough, you'll eventually get to where you want to be, but choosing the longest possible path around doesn't make much sense. :-) You'd very probably be done by now if you simply used the majordomo port which comes with FreeBSD; the port should handle the webserver cgi-bin integration and any mail system changes automatically. -Chuck From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Fri May 30 03:35:45 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 411E737B401 for ; Fri, 30 May 2003 03:35:45 -0700 (PDT) Received: from smtp.lcn.biz (smtp.lcn.biz [195.82.107.155]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3FA3343F93 for ; Fri, 30 May 2003 03:35:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from simond@irrelevant.org) Received: from [193.195.31.182] (helo=simon.lcn.biz) by smtp.lcn.biz with asmtp (Exim 4.10) id 19LhEd-0008M0-00; Fri, 30 May 2003 11:35:43 +0100 From: Simon Dick To: kennyf@pchg.net In-Reply-To: <200305291614.51033.kennyf@pchg.net> References: <200305291614.51033.kennyf@pchg.net> Content-Type: text/plain Organization: Message-Id: <1054291192.68244.21.camel@simon.lcn.biz> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.2.4 Date: 30 May 2003 11:39:53 +0100 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Subject: Re: POP3 Server Recomendation? Then I would set the group's quota to 10MB. It's the closest you can get to a directory-only quota, assuming you use distinct groups per directory you want to do this for.
