Given that you really want ispfw to make sure >you have updated fw loaded. > >Just an idea, dunno how difficult it would be to detect >ispfw.ko ? Trivial. I have a null pointer in isp that ispfw.ko fills in. There are a couple of issues here. One is that, strictly speaking, you shouldn't *have* to have F/W loaded by the driver *unless* you're on a platform that doesn't start the card for you. If I could *get* QLogic to tell me where in flash for each card they put firmware then I wouldn't have to have ispfw and haul around 300KB of f/w for all cards. If I get around to my plans to rewrite isp for it's 3rd version, it will be split into multiple pieces that will allow SCSI and FC configs, be smarter about f/w downloads, and so on. Barring that, if MFSROOT, I can't have ispfw configured except on the 3rd floppy. I was on my way to trying to get that done when I decided I needed a break from FreeBSD- dunno if it survived all the people fooling around with floppy sets or not. In any case, if we *have* room to keep the f/w around, it should just be included as a default. If we don't, then warning about it not being present is perhaps a bit silly. -matt To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Tue Feb 25 1: 0:59 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 18D1237B401 for ; Tue, 25 Feb 2003 01:00:58 -0800 (PST) Received: from aage.i.eunet.no (aage.i.eunet.no [193.71.2.25]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 93BFF43FA3 for ; Tue, 25 Feb 2003 01:00:57 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from aagero@aage.i.eunet.no) Received: by aage.i.eunet.no (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 15299BA33; Tue, 25 Feb 2003 10:00:56 +0100 (CET) Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 10:00:55 +0100 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?=C5ge_R=F8bekk?= To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Subject: performance issues with amr driver, dell PERC 3/DC Message-ID: <20030225090055.GI76052@eunetnorge.no> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit User-Agent: Mutt/1.4i Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I have a Dell Poweredge 2650 with a Dell PERC 3/DC RAID card. Both channels on the controller are connected to a PowerVault 220S enclosure. The PV220S has 8 disks, 4 on each channel (split backplane). For some reason, I cannot get speeds higher than ~14MB/s, even with a RAID-0 stripe on all disks. In another setup, with a RAID-5 set on one channel (4 disks) and a RAID-0 set on the other channel, there is no difference in write performance, not what one should expect. If I run 2 dd's, one on each of the RAID5/RAID0 sets, the throughput is divided in half, ~7MB/s, for each channel. Which suggests the problem more likely located in the driver rather than the scsi bus speeds, etc. Another strange thing is that transfers per second (tps in iostat) is always very close to 150 tps, and with a max iosize of 96k, the througput is as expected, 150 * 96k ~= 14MB/s. This system is running the latest RELENG_4 sources as of Feb 24. -- Åge Røbekk, EUnet Norge AS To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-scsi" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-scsi Tue Feb 25 7:56:26 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0AC2F37B405 for ; Tue, 25 Feb 2003 07:56:24 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail0.lsil.com (mail0.lsil.com [147.145.40.20]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5F9FB43FAF for ; Tue, 25 Feb 2003 07:56:23 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from emoore@lsil.com) Received: from mhbs.lsil.com (mhbs.lsil.com [147.145.31.100]) by mail0.lsil.com (8.12.4/8.12.4) with ESMTP id h1PFpdxJ014002 for ; Tue, 25 Feb 2003 07:56:20 -0800 (PST) Received: from atl1.se.lsil.com by mhbs.lsil.com with ESMTP; Tue, 25 Feb 2003 07:56:19 -0800 Received: by EXA-ATLANTA.se.lsil.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) id ; Tue, 25 Feb 2003 10:56:19 -0500 Message-Id: <0E3FA95632D6D047BA649F95DAB60E5701DE5DE1@EXA-ATLANTA.se.lsil.com> From: "Moore, Eric Dean" To: =?iso-8859-1?Q?=C5ge_R=F8bekk?= , freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: RE: performance issues with amr driver, dell PERC 3/DC Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 10:56:17 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Sender: owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Please send me your dmesg. =20 (1) I need to know what command line options you were using when = running dd; e.g was it reads or writes, and what benchmark tool you used to get 7MB/s. Three disks are present, all on the A channel. 4.7-Release blows up badly on this hardware (starting with "ahd0: WARNING - Failed chip reset! Trying to initialize anyway). When I try and boot a snapshot of Stable from 24 February 2003, I get a dump from the B side of the controller followed by a hang when the disks are being probed. When I boot 5.0-RELEASE from the distribution ISO image, everything works fine. Since I don't really want to run 5.0 on this machine in production, can anyone give me a clue as to how I can get it running under Stable? any other information I can provide? I hate to contemplate copping out and disabling the on-board controller and sticking in a 29160 in a PCI slot. console outputs from the 4.8-Prerelease and 5.0-Release boots follow.
