You're lucky and your software version has one of the backdoors that you find on the net. 2. You connect your switch to another via those special connectors on the back. For me neither of those worked, but fortunately SNMP was enabled on the switch and the write community was something like 'private' (don't remember exactly). The passwords are in the MIB and I could write them via snmpset. If neither of those work, you'll better get a new one, because 3com appears to charge real money for help in those cases. harti From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 24 18:49:59 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 929A316A4CE; Mon, 24 May 2004 18:49:59 -0700 (PDT) Received: from p4.roq.com (ns1.ecoms.com [207.44.130.137]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 36F7A43D46; Mon, 24 May 2004 18:49:57 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from michael@roq.com) Received: from roq.com (unknown [203.100.254.38]) by p4.roq.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2B9274C5D8; Tue, 25 May 2004 01:49:23 +0000 (GMT) Message-ID: <40B2A61A.5050006@roq.com> Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 11:49:14 +1000 From: Michael Vince User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040520 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Maksymilian Wrzesinski References: <32525686.20040518234834@obta.uw.edu.pl> In-Reply-To: <32525686.20040518234834@obta.uw.edu.pl> X-Enigmail-Version: 0.83.6.0 X-Enigmail-Supports: pgp-inline, pgp-mime Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org cc: freebsd-performance@freebsd.org Subject: Re: raid backup X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 01:49:59 -0000 Maksymilian Wrzesinski wrote: > hello, > > what would you recommend as good (and cheap) solution for backup raid? > i need two 120gb hard disks connected in a proper mode to the > controller to back up one another. > > what chips on controllers are fast and reliable - and still being > cheaplike silicon image ata controllers? are they supoorted by > freebsd? > > tia, > I have been keeping my eye out for cheap hardware based RAID solutions my self all the addon cards still seem to be either cheap software based? stuff from taiwan or expensive and often slow addon cards that have questionable support for FreeBSD It seems that the the Nforce3 250gb from Nvidia has hardware based raid built into their chipset for motherboards with a lot of top shelf features such as hotswap for SATA and both SATA and IDE RAID that can be combined http://www.anandtech.com/chipsets/showdoc.html?i=2009 Quote from anandtech 'Other questions regarded Linux support on nForce3-250Gb. Nvidia emphasizes full support for Linux in their literature for nF3-250. We were assured that nF3-250 features will have drivers available for Linux if they are needed, and that all features will work in Linux. Linux users should be reassured to know that Linux was a significant part of the nVidia presentation - not a thrown-in afterthought as we often see when it comes to Linux.' I am guessing this motherboard chipset would work well as RAID, it shouldn't matter what what OS you run as it is true hardware based RAID, I am assuming with FreeBSD we would miss out of some utils to query the raid as to the status of the HDs but I would hope that FreeBSD would eventually get the same tools as that would be available for Linux The performance should be good as well since they have the benchmarks are there and compare to the intel stuff if you have seen some of benchmarks of some of the 'high performance?' addon raid cards that anadtech have benchmarked over time you will be shocked to see how slow and crappy some of them are! The Nforce3 250gb is for AMD 64 CPUs only but they have also just released the same technology for the Athlon XP series called Nforce2 Ultra 400gb which would make a very cheap and powerful solution. http://www.anandtech.com/chipsets/showdoc.html?i=2051 The latest Intel chipsets don't seem to be to far behind as far as I can tell but they don't offer things like hot swap etc. Still as I said I have just been watching out I am not sure how well this stuff would work on FreeBSD but I am thinking in theory it should be OK. If any one really knows and has tested with them it would be great to hear about it. -- PGP ID: 0x4F163152 From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 24 22:51:37 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C212416A4CE; Mon, 24 May 2004 22:51:37 -0700 (PDT) Received: from rms04.rommon.net (rms04.rommon.net [212.54.2.140]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7831A43D49; Mon, 24 May 2004 22:51:36 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from pete@he.iki.fi) Received: from he.iki.fi (hbb.vuokselantie10.fi [193.64.42.187]) by rms04.rommon.net (8.12.10/8.12.9) with ESMTP id i4P5oU3v037103; Tue, 25 May 2004 08:50:30 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from pete@he.iki.fi) Message-ID: <40B2DEA1.4070909@he.iki.fi> Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 08:50:25 +0300 From: Petri Helenius User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040113 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Michael Vince References: <32525686.20040518234834@obta.uw.edu.pl> <40B2A61A.5050006@roq.com> In-Reply-To: <40B2A61A.5050006@roq.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org cc: freebsd-performance@freebsd.org cc: Maksymilian Wrzesinski Subject: Re: raid backup X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 05:51:37 -0000 Michael Vince wrote: > Maksymilian Wrzesinski wrote: > >> hello, >> >> what would you recommend as good (and cheap) solution for backup raid? >> i need two 120gb hard disks connected in a proper mode to the >> controller to back up one another. > Depends on your definition of "cheap" but 3ware cards work fine with FreeBSD. I updated a jail running on FreeBSD 4.8 from Apache 1.3.26 PHP 4.1.2 to Apache 1.3.31 PHP 4.3.6 and sessions broke. All the gory details are included below from a post I made to the PHP list. I'm looking for ideas as to how to debug this, ANY clues would be appreciated. /\/\ \/\/ Session support worked fine in 4.1.2. It's broken in 4.3.4 and 4.3.6. The relevant session variables are: Session Support enabled (as per phpinfo) session.auto_start On or Off (makes no difference) session.use_cookies Off <- not using cookies session.name PHPSESSID session.use_trans_sid Off (trans_sid worked with forms in 4.1.2) session.gc_maxlifetime 1440 Other things people have asked about: url_rewriter.tags a=href, area=href, frame=src, input=src, form=fakeentry Environment FreeBSD 4.8, Apache/1.3.31 (Unix) PHP/4.3.6 mod_ssl/2.8.17 OpenSSL/0.9.7d The session directory is writable and the files are getting properly written to that directory as shown below. I invoke the script from a browser and see the following: Stage:0 SessionID: 509012dd5633cba355c270f3934d1201 _______ [Submit] Stage:1 SessionID: 509012dd5633cba355c270f3934d1201 Request: Array ( ) GET: Array ( ) POST: Array ( [field] => ) COOKIE: Array ( ) Checking the session directory, I see an appropriately named file: -rw------- 1 nobody msen 10 May 25 12:00 sess_509012dd5633cba355c270f3934d1201 containing stage|i:1; The Apache log contains two lines. The first does not contain the browser version and the second one does: "GET /g/xxx.php HTTP/1.0" "GET /g/xxx.php HTTP/1.0" 200 476 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98) Opera 7.02 [en]" So I enter foo in the form and hit Submit. The browser screen shows that the script failed to use the session variable, but it remembers it: Stage:0 SessionID: d7002911afdc01a5218e06af2b8f02ad foo____ [Submit] Stage:1 SessionID: d7002911afdc01a5218e06af2b8f02ad Request: Array ( [PHPSESSID] => 509012dd5633cba355c270f3934d1201 [field] => foo ) GET: Array ( [PHPSESSID] => 509012dd5633cba355c270f3934d1201 ) POST: Array ( [field] => foo ) COOKIE: Array ( ) The session directory now contains TWO files: -rw------- 1 nobody msen 10 May 25 12:00 sess_509012dd5633cba355c270f3934d1201 -rw------- 1 nobody msen 10 May 25 12:03 sess_d7002911afdc01a5218e06af2b8f02ad each containing: stage|i:1; and the Apache log once again has two lines. The browser has passed back the original session ID but PHP has ignored it and assigned a new one. "POST /g/xxx.php?PHPSESSID=509012dd5633cba355c270f3934d1201 HTTP/1.0" 200 605 "POST /g/xxx.php?PHPSESSID=509012dd5633cba355c270f3934d1201 HTTP/1.0" 200 605 "http://SERVER/xxx.php" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 2000) Opera 6.05 [en]" Now, I hit Submit once more and PHP does manage to re-use the session! And it will continue to do so until the script is re-invoked by another browser: Stage:1 SessionID: d7002911afdc01a5218e06af2b8f02ad foo____ [Submit] Stage:1 SessionID: d7002911afdc01a5218e06af2b8f02ad Request: Array ( [PHPSESSID] => d7002911afdc01a5218e06af2b8f02ad [field] => foo ) GET: Array ( [PHPSESSID] => d7002911afdc01a5218e06af2b8f02ad ) POST: Array ( [field] => foo ) COOKIE: Array ( ) the session directory remains unchanged other than access time on the reused session: -rw------- 1 nobody msen 10 May 25 12:00 sess_509012dd5633cba355c270f3934d1201 -rw------- 1 nobody msen 10 May 25 12:13 sess_d7002911afdc01a5218e06af2b8f02ad each containing: stage|i:1; The Apache log once again contains two lines: "POST /g/xxx.php?PHPSESSID=d7002911afdc01a5218e06af2b8f02ad HTTP/1.0" 200 605 "POST /g/xxx.php?PHPSESSID=d7002911afdc01a5218e06af2b8f02ad HTTP/1.0" 200 605 "http://SERVER/xxx.php?PHPSESSID=509012dd5633cba355c270f3934d1201" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 2000) Opera 6.05 [en]" And, finally, here is the test script. You'll need the help of your ISP and a run some routing protocol (i.e.; OSPF or BGP.) The reason is that you will need to tie the two IPs of the DLS lines to a third virtual IP, at both ends. You do not need a virtual IP address (such as an HSRP or VRRP setup). You just need equal cost paths from the ISP to you. To achieve this you will need to route an address range from your ISP to your network. It can be your address space, a small piece of ISP provided space, or even a chunk of private space. Just as long as it's routed from the ISP to you via the DSL tails. The ISP just needs to see equal cost paths to your prefix via BOTH your DSL tails. That way they will use both. There are several ways to do this (inc running eBGP or OSPF to them from your equipment). Have a chat with your ISP to see what options they would consider. I'd love to know more about this... I've got access to do just that, but don't know where exactly to start... We use ADSL which is delivered over ATM transport - we have mini FreeBSD boxes on the client site, and a FreeBSD box as a router in the colo as gateway - we're setting it up to do mesh VPN routing, and packet filtering, etc. but I guess we are in the right position to set something like that up for anyone wanting more bandwidth... The nature of the ATM transport is that A can see B and C can see B, but A can not see C (atm path restrictions - it would have to be routed or bounced off B, and although I've heard people mumble about /32 subnetting, I'm not sure how that would work) A--ADSL---\ B --- Internet C--ADSL---/ Thanks. m/ > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-freebsd-isp@freebsd.org > [mailto:owner-freebsd-isp@freebsd.org]On Behalf Of Joe Hamelin > Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 3:02 PM > To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org > Subject: Re: 2 adsl connections load balancing with natd/ipfw > > > > It's not an easy solution at all. I've never used FreeBSD as a router (cisco routers, freebsd servers) so I can't comment on how it handles forwarding decisions. But, seeing as you own both ends, you may be able to do something as simple as using a pair of static routes on the router to do this without having to worry about a routing protocol at all. Anyone got comments on FreeBSD using multiple static routes with the same wight to the same destination? Analog installation on Linux Slackware 8 works fine with php.ini. ÷Ô, 25.05.2004 22:00:05 you wrote: > MRW> MRW> I'm mentioning this here becasue the PHP list seems not to have a MRW> clue and I had someone test this on both Mac and Linux and it works MRW> OK there. I have found out that it is possible with pf but I get dynamic ip > address from adsl provider, I think pf needs to know the gateway ip for > this to work. (I guess) I still look... as I also have two DSL lines I searched in for the same kind of information = in the past that you are trying to find. After hours of Googling I came to the following conclusion: - being "multihomed" with a FreeBSD based system is only possible if you use a dynamic routing protocoll. The required software suite for this is Zebra. Drawback: requires assistance from your ISP an *a lot* of routing knowledg= e on your side. Does not work with dynamic IP addresses usually assigned via PPP as seen with most non-business customers - being "multihomed" with a Linux based system does work to some degree if you use the IPChains/IPTables/IPRoute2 features that come with the OS (tagging packets to route them out on the same interface they came in by making routing decisions based on those tags etc.). AFAIK there is also an experimental pseudo NIC that is used to bundle the lines. Drawback (for me at least): I am not familiar with Linux :) - being "multhomed" independent of the type of OS works with hardware that is specifically designed to bring DSL or Cable lines together. One example for this kind of hardware would be Radware=B4s "Linkproof" pro= duct Drawback: this stuff is pretty expensive (compared to an open source software solution) So far I did not find any tutorial or howto or whatever to achieve my goal w= ith FreeBSD. I assume right now there is no satisfying way to use your two lines with BSD except with dedicated hardware. It's not perfect, but it's something. Basically, I think you'd set up a FreeBSD box as 'the router', so clients would point to it's interface for their gateway (or however you want to set it up), then the FreeBSD box would distribute requests between the two 'real' router IP's. I'm not certain this will work, but just a thought.. The only problem i have found is that each tcp session may then pick a different natd, couldn't figure out how to stick it to the source ip. It does work tho. No bgp, isp intervention, etc, reqired. The outgoing ones, although not really load balanced, just spread, is still pretty good. Its not perfect, but it does work. The biggest wart is that individual TCP sessions are bound to an interface rather than individual source IP's. Looking around on the net and FreeBSD archives it looks like if you want cheap ATA Raid now go with either a Intel motherboard with ICH5 or Promise SATA TX2/TX4 The performance of the Intel ICH5 looks very good with low CPU utilization (well from what benchmarks in running from MS windows suggest) I haven't found any clear documentation on what can and cant be used. http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2004-March/006791.html http://www.ambrisko.com/doug/ata/ata_stable_sata_4.patch http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.2.1R/relnotes-i386.html#DISKS http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.2.1R/hardware-i386.html#AEN65 http://www.freebsd.org/releases/4.10R/hardware-i386.html#AEN34 From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Sat May 29 05:21:00 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7F72516A4CE; Sat, 29 May 2004 05:21:00 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.zvezda.number.ru (inet.zvezda.number.ru [213.247.132.145]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CBBAB43D2F; Sat, 29 May 2004 05:20:59 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from blacksir@number.ru) Received: from inet.park7.number.ru ([212.5.99.220] helo=blacksir) by mail.zvezda.number.ru with smtp (Exim) id 1BU2pI-00053s-CQ; Sat, 29 May 2004 16:20:37 +0400 From: "Vasenin Alexander aka BlackSir" To: "Michael Vince" Date: Sat, 29 May 2004 16:20:56 +0400 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="windows-1250" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook IMO, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2910.0) X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4910.0300 In-Reply-To: <40B85FD9.7070607@roq.com> Importance: Normal X-Spam-Score: -100.0 (---------------------------------------------------) X-Spam-Report: Spam detection software, running on the system "inet.zvezda.number.ru", hasmessageblock similar future email. I have been using Promise TX2000's with two drives / computer as RAID 0 with FreeBSD 4.x for over two years in multiple machines. The only "software" it uses is the Firmware/ BIOS of the TX2000. I have seen software available for other OS's but none with FreeBSD. FreeBSD only sees one drive, which would be exactly what you would expect. I have had one drive go bad, which upon rebooting the TX2000 provided a message stating as such. It gave the option to shutdown and replace the bad drive or continue booting and using the one good drive, which is what I did for about three days at which time was more suitable to replace the failed drive. The software available for the OS's does not emulate RAID, it merely provides communication from the TX2000 RAID Card to the admin. This software is not available for FreeBSD AFAIK which is why I had no idea that the drive had went bad until I rebooted. So, while the software is helpful for knowing if you are losing a drive, the TX2000 will function fine without it. It has been the experience here that the TX2000 is a fine ATA RAID card. GL. Lewis .
