The Sun Community Source License will be presented to you at every possible opportunity, for you to click on the "Yes I agree to these terms" button. As to why it's like this -- it's due to Sun's efforts to keep Java pure and interoperable across all implementations and machine architectures. Thus you aren't allowed to redistribute the sources you download from Sun, especially not with any modifications. You aren't allowed to redistribute any compiled version of Java unless it has passed Sun's stringent compliancy tests and been licensed by them. However, you are allowed to download sources from Sun and patches from whoever will provide them in order to compile up your own JVM for development or personal use, so long as you agree to abide by the terms of the SCSL. =20 Cheers, Matthew --=20 Dr Matthew J Seaman MA, D.Phil. 26 The Paddocks Savill Way PGP: http://www.infracaninophile.co.uk/pgpkey Marlow Tel: +44 1628 476614 Bucks., SL7 1TH UK --2fHTh5uZTiUOsy+g Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFACkUvdtESqEQa7a0RAiE8AJ4gS7ZEeOdhZANe01+zvQ+KqyqKKACfS6PQ uSP/+qPn3fwCGBpEDQJe+4A= =MM3e -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --2fHTh5uZTiUOsy+g-- From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 26 15:54:24 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7A9DA16A4CE for ; Mon, 26 Jan 2004 15:54:24 -0800 (PST) Received: from chen.org.nz (chen.org.nz [210.54.19.51]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E75FB43D66 for ; Mon, 26 Jan 2004 15:53:16 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from jonc@chen.org.nz) Received: by chen.org.nz (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 650DD13620; Tue, 27 Jan 2004 12:52:50 +1300 (NZDT) Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2004 12:52:50 +1300 From: Jonathan Chen To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20040126235250.GC28605@grimoire.chen.org.nz> References: <20040126234445.GA28605@grimoire.chen.org.nz> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="61jdw2sOBCFtR2d/" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040126234445.GA28605@grimoire.chen.org.nz> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i Subject: Re: JDK1.4.2p6_1 and java.awt.PrintJob X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2004 23:54:24 -0000 --61jdw2sOBCFtR2d/ Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline On Tue, Jan 27, 2004 at 12:44:45PM +1300, Jonathan Chen wrote: > Hi everyone, > > I'm having problems with the printing with JDK1.4.2p6_1. The primary goal for this is to coding java programs with eclipse. I have read all information I found on google.com and freebsd.org/java, but I don't get all answers for the questions I have. ;) I had tried the installation of jdk-1.3 but the only version I get to work was the 'linux-sun-jdk1.3'. I am a little bit confused about these many versions around. So here are the questions. :) 1. Which JDK you'll prefer on a 5.2-R focused on stability? 2. Which steps are needed to install the prefered JDK? 3. Are there issues on the threading model (kse||thr)? best regards, Gordon --=20 Gordon Bergling http://www.0xFCE3.net/ PGP Fingerprint: 7732 9BB1 5013 AE8B E42C 28E0 93B9 D32B C76F 02A0 RIPE-HDL: MDTP-RIPE "There is no place like 127.0.0.0/8" --lrZ03NoBR/3+SXJZ Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFAFqimk7nTK8dvAqARAoeMAKDB+vdwZbTJhz1AjClDXc1Vnb4hrwCePxY1 LWCoKOXfwQQUt5P8dr4cxKc= =UQ5f -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --lrZ03NoBR/3+SXJZ-- From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 27 12:10:29 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5D55A16A4CE for ; Tue, 27 Jan 2004 12:10:29 -0800 (PST) Received: from amsfep17-int.chello.nl (amsfep17-int.chello.nl [213.46.243.15]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 14C3B43D48 for ; Tue, 27 Jan 2004 12:10:11 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ronald-freebsd5@klop.yi.org) Received: from henk.thuis.klop.ws ([24.132.246.115]) by amsfep17-int.chello.nlESMTP <20040127200905.WNXH15878.amsfep17-int.chello.nl@henk.thuis.klop.ws> for ; Tue, 27 Jan 2004 21:09:05 +0100 To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org From: Ronald Klop Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=iso-8859-1 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2004 21:09:04 +0100 Message-ID: User-Agent: Opera7.23/FreeBSD M2 build 518 Subject: Opera & JDK 1.4.2 Applets X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2004 20:10:29 -0000 Hello, Now and than I'm trying to run applets in Opera. I use Opera for Freebsd which is compiled on FreeBSD 4.x (I think 4.8) by the Opera company and JDK 1.4.2p6 on FreeBSD 5.2. Is it true that this will never work because the JDK is compiled on FreeBSD 5.2 and Opera on 4.x? Opera uses JNI to connect to/start the JVM for running the applet. Doesn't this mean that I cannot use the native 1.4 JDK for anything real without getting commercial license ? If so, the native 1.4 jdk is useless - one has to use diablo-jdk 1.3 (no hotspot....) or linux jdk (is this stable with emulation). Please, please correct me if I'm wrong. Switch 5.x version of jdk14 back to libc_r as default threading library. We switched FreeBSD-5.x port to libkse as default threading library before releasing of patchset 6, but users who has most of stuff linked against libc_r and attempted to use jdk linked against libkse got into local hell of threading libraries mix. So, rollback to libc_r by default and add PTHREAD_LIBS support for this port. IMPORTANT: In order to use libkse as threading library for jdk14 you have to use rtld's libmap feature or recompile your ports stuff (like mozilla) with libkse. NOTE: libkse still has issues with java debug support, so if you're going to use debuging (JVMDI) stuff - leave with libc_r for now. 2. Disable IPv6 support by default. Unfortunatelly due to security reasons IPv4-to-IPv6 addresses mapping is disabled by default in FreeBSD-5.x, so those who would like to use Java Networking stuff had to manually enable it. To make jdk14 port more user-friendly IPv6 is disabled now on compile time. Those who need this stuff enabled have to use WITH_IPV6 compile time option. 3. Add MINIMAL compile option. If this option is used to build jdk14 port then plugin, javaws and demos stuff will not be installed and/or packaged. Also (as noted in [5]) X11 runtime dependancy will not be registered into built package. 4. Strip runtime depends of jdk14 port. There's no need to require open-motif to be runtime depends since libXm is staticly linked into libawt.so. 5. Make X11 runtime dependancy conditional (via urwfonts) in !WITHOUT_PLUGIN case only. This should affect only prebuilt package users: there's no need to install X11 libraries if you're going to use non-GUI stuff only (i.e. tomcat or jboss) 6. Add ${LOCALBASE}/lib to the deafult search path for JNI libraries. 7. They all seems to run normal. At next I installed eclipse from a recent ports-tree. If I start eclipse it=20 was starting the gui and stopped afterwards. The application was stalled wi= thout getting any response from it. The output of top was a little bit confusing. The java process used minimal cpu time, but the system value was nearly 100 percent. So I tried 'top -S' to see if any kernel process is consuming all the time, but there was nothing unusual. After changed libkse to libc_r via /etc/libmap.conf the applications started normal. BTW, the benchmark was nearly three time faster as with libkse. Once you start bringing other libraries into Java, like graphics which can bring in a threads library, you have to be sure that all thread libraries are the same. In short, you have to use /etc/libmap.conf to globally map libc_r to libkse in order to get the JDK to work with libkse. > After changed libkse to libc_r via /etc/libmap.conf the applications > started normal. I've got nVidia card and am running everything with libc_r. Javaws apps run nicely, but applets running inside mozila-firebird-0.7_2 kack with the dump below. Applets seem to run okay inside of Konqueror thankfully. I've seen a few other posts out there on this firebird/jdk14 applet failure, but no solutions. I thought I'd come over to -java to ask a few questions. First, some background: I have several years' experience in writing garbage collectors for various systems, including runtimes for Standard ML, Common Lisp, Dylan, and PostScript; and Geodesic's "Great Circle" product. My company has an open-source memory management system, the MPS, which includes various garbage collection techniques . As I use FreeBSD on my desktop, I tried to port the MPS to FreeBSD a couple of years ago, and it worked fine except for the multi-threaded case. Specifically, the MPS has a pthread management subsystem which suspends and resumes threads using pthread_kill and a signal handler, and expects to be able to get the thread context (ucontext, on BSD) inside the signal handler, in order to scan registers. This does not work on FreeBSD 4.x, although apparently it now works on -CURRENT. I filed a PR (bin/31661), recently closed by a freebsd-threads developer. The ensuing email discussion has been useful to me. It has educated me about pthread_suspend_all_np() and related functions, which seem like great improvement on the pthread_kill/handler/sigsuspend mechanism which the MPS was using (and which was more-or-less the norm in garbage collectors a few years ago). It also included the claim that the 1.4 native JDK does not need to access the thread context, although the 1.3 JDK did. I'm intrigued by this claim, and wonder whether any -java members can enlighten me on this. How do you scan the registers without access to the thread's ucontext? I presume that you rely on the ucontext's being allocated somewhere which you will be treating as a (conservative) root? I'm intrigued by > this claim, and wonder whether any -java members can enlighten me on > this. How do you scan the registers without access to the thread's Unfortunately they have mixed issues a bit. Back in JDK 1.4.0 days we have had to have information about current stack pointer (esp), and it was a big problem since there was not way to fetch thread's ucontext. I tried to work around this issue with direct access to jb (jump buffer) in same way as gdb(1) does, but some related issues (I don't remember exactly) did not allow to make this schema work. Since JDK 1.4.1 we got correctly working fallbacks, so I was not required to do a black magic anymore. If you're interesting about way how JDK (in Solaris case) get ucontext_t -- they do it in same way as you described -- with pthread_kill()->sighandler() schema. According to mentioned above 'access to the thread context' -- it is also different issue. JDK needed to know about internal libc_r data (and this data was not legally exported), so we had to directly use libc_r's private includes in order to access blackboxed data. Lately I have implemented pthread_attr_get_np() function which exported all required information on application level and we stoped to use private libc_r structures in JDK 1.4.x > ucontext? I presume that you rely on the ucontext's being allocated > somewhere which you will be treating as a (conservative) root? As I described above, we don't. IIRC there's only way to get correct ucontext_t is to ask kernel for it (via issuing of the signal). Actually problem you described in PR mentioned was fixed after required support was added into the kernel (as part of libpthread development), but does not rely on threading library you use. Another story that it's not possible to get thread's ucontext in libc_r because kernel does not know anything about libc_r's threads, but that really another story. What are "correctly working fallbacks"? It means that if callback (used in pthread_kill()/sighandler()) schema does not return meaningful value (i.e. NULL) then JVM tries to detect this value with own way. It is slower solution, but works for us in all cases (both -STABLE and -CURRENT with any thread libraries) > > Lately I have implemented pthread_attr_get_np() function which > > exported all required information on application level and we stoped > > to use private libc_r structures in JDK 1.4.x > > Which information delivered by pthread_attr_get_np() do you use? > pthread_attr_getstack()? Kind of. But with one small, but important exception. pthread_attr_getstack() returns stackaddr and stacksize values from pthread_attr structure associated with thread. But in case if you call pthread_create() with default attribute then stackaddr will be NULL. In this case libc_r will allocate stack for this thread internally and will not export this stack pointer address into application. Usually there's no need to do it -- if application want to know location of thread stack it simply mallocs it and provide its address via pthread_attr structure to pthread_create(). Initially I did it in way just described, but lately I found that JVM does not provide way to deallocate stack after thread finishes. I had to implement own deallocating schema via separate thread almost line-by-line similar to libc_r's gc thread. Another issue with this way -- JVM provides some restriction of amount of memory to be used (via command line switches) and in case if this value was too small -- thread stack were able to eat all available memory for application itself. Of course it was possible to implement it in another way and don't eat applications' memory, but it was even more hackish than described in first item. So, implementation of pthread_attr_get_np() with current behavior allowed me to avoid implementing these hack "solutions". > > Sorry for not saying anything helpful for you :( > > Not at all, this is very helpful. > > Nick Barnes > Ravenbrook Limited -- /* Alexey Zelkin && Independent Contractor */ /* phantom(at)FreeBSD.org && http://www.FreeBSD.org/java */ /* phantom(at)cris.net && http://www.FreeBSD.org.ua/ */ From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Feb 6 10:51:20 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2BBC716A4CE for ; Fri, 6 Feb 2004 10:51:20 -0800 (PST) Received: from mrelay2.uni-hannover.de (mrelay2.uni-hannover.de [130.75.2.5]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1EB6943D39 for ; Fri, 6 Feb 2004 10:51:18 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gerrit@pmp.uni-hannover.de) Received: from www.pmp.uni-hannover.de (www.pmp.uni-hannover.de [130.75.117.2])i16IpDNp011944; Fri, 6 Feb 2004 19:51:14 +0100 (MET) Received: by www.pmp.uni-hannover.de (Postfix, from userid 846) id A26B21C3; Fri, 6 Feb 2004 19:51:09 +0100 (CET) Date: Fri, 6 Feb 2004 19:51:09 +0100 From: Gerrit =?iso-8859-1?Q?K=FChn?= To: Jan Schultze Message-ID: <20040206185109.GA69194@pmp.uni-hannover.de> References: <20040118184155.GA19562@pmp.uni-hannover.de> <4022D937.50605@gmx.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <4022D937.50605@gmx.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-Operating-System: FreeBSD X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.37 cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Problems with Eclipse and jdk 1.3/1.4 X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 06 Feb 2004 18:51:20 -0000 On Fri, Feb 06, 2004 at 01:00:55AM +0100, Jan Schultze wrote: > I had the same problem (FreeBSD 5.2, jdk1.4.2-p6 and Eclipse 2.1.2), but > using libmap.conf to map libkse to libc_r like Greg suggested seems to > solve the problem. The mapping works around this by making sure that only one of the two is being used. So, you can get correct behaviour (*) with libkse, but you have to have everything compiled with it. During this transition period we are getting a lot of people who have one application compiled with one library trying to work with another application compiled with the other. E.g. eclipse or mozilla is compiled with libc_r and the jdk is compiled with libkse (or vice versa). * - there are some JVM debugging hooks which aren't working right with libkse last I heard. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Feb 7 09:48:04 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 53C9D16A4CE for ; Sat, 7 Feb 2004 09:48:04 -0800 (PST) Received: from web20102.mail.yahoo.com (web20102.mail.yahoo.com [216.136.226.39]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 3861943D1D for ; Sat, 7 Feb 2004 09:48:04 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from trumvect@yahoo.com) Message-ID: <20040207174804.90755.qmail@web20102.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [61.2.2.247] by web20102.mail.yahoo.com via HTTP; Sat, 07 Feb 2004 09:48:04 PST Date: Sat, 7 Feb 2004 09:48:04 -0800 (PST) From: nil ban To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Subject: *nix newbie; is there any bdk and sdk(Servlet Dev.
