I do not know if they will work on sparc64. They will work on i386 but it is not said they will work without problem on other architectures. For example the FAstrak board did not work well on my Alpha XP1000 and I had to remove it. From a sunsolve doc: "Red State" exception error messages are generated by the OBP when a CPU is hung and normal execution cannot be continued. The specific article this appeared in referred to a firmware bug in V480/V880 systems, so it can be caused by CPU or chipset programming bugs. For a machine that hasn't died before, though, I'd suspect a hardware issue. > > Hope this helps. > > > Message: 1 > > Date: Thu, 3 Jun 2004 18:24:14 -0700 > > From: Kris Kennaway > > Subject: Re: panic: trapanic: vm_fault: fault on > > nofault entry, addr: > > cfd76000 > > To: Kris Kennaway > > Cc: sparc64@FreeBSD.org > > Message-ID: > > <20040604012414.GA89079@xor.obsecurity.org> > > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" > > > > On Mon, May 31, 2004 at 08:08:07PM -0700, Kris > > Kennaway wrote: > > > One of the sparc machines (running -CURRENT from > > about 2 days ago) panicked: > > > > > > panic: trapanic: vm_fault: fault on nofault entry, > > addr: cfd76000 > > > at line 277 in file > > > /a/portbuild/sparc64/src-client/sys/vm/vm_fault.ccpuid > > = 0; > > > Debugger("panic") > > > Stopped at > > > RED State Exception > > > > > > TL=0000.0000.0000.0005 TT=0000.0000.0000.0080 > > > TPC=0000.0000.c003.c208 > > TnPC=0000.0000.c003.c20c TSTATE=0000.0044.5800.1507 > > > TL=0000.0000.0000.0004 TT=0000.0000.0000.0010 > > > TPC=0000.0000.c004.0f48 > > TnPC=0000.0000.c004.0f4c TSTATE=0000.0044.5800.1507 > > > TL=0000.0000.0000.0003 TT=0000.0000.0000.0010 > > > TPC=0000.0000.c004.0f48 > > TnPC=0000.0000.c004.0f4c TSTATE=0000.0044.5800.1506 > > > TL=0000.0000.0000.0002 TT=0000.0000.0000.0063 > > > TPC=0000.0000.c004.0fac > > TnPC=0000.0000.c004.0fb0 TSTATE=0000.0044.5800.1605 > > > TL=0000.0000.0000.0001 TT=0000.0000.0000.0068 > > > TPC=0000.0000.4020.f87c > > TnPC=0000.0000.4020.f880 TSTATE=0000.0099.0000.1206 > > > > > > It hung here. > > > > Got another one: > > > > TL=0000.0000.0000.0005 TT=0000.0000.0000.0068 > > TPC=0000.0000.c003.d000 TnPC=0000.0000.c003.d004 > > TSTATE=0000.0044.5800.1504 > > TL=0000.0000.0000.0004 TT=0000.0000.0000.0080 > > TPC=0000.0000.c003.c208 TnPC=0000.0000.c003.c20c > > TSTATE=0000.0044.5800.1502 > > TL=0000.0000.0000.0003 TT=0000.0000.0000.0010 > > TPC=0000.0000.c003.cd00 TnPC=0000.0000.c003.cd04 > > TSTATE=0000.0044.5804.1402 > > TL=0000.0000.0000.0002 TT=0000.0000.0000.0068 > > TPC=0000.0000.c004.0f64 TnPC=0000.0000.c004.0f68 > > TSTATE=0000.0044.5800.1502 > > TL=0000.0000.0000.0001 TT=0000.0000.0000.0063 > > TPC=0000.0000.0012.687c TnPC=0000.0000.0012.6880 > > TSTATE=0000.0099.0000.1201 > > > > Is this a sign of hardware failure? > > > > > > > > __________________________________ > Do you Yahoo!? > Friends. From what I've read this machine can only be netbooted with FreeBSD as result of a SCSI problem. Thing is - I know very little about netbooting, and I haven't been able to find much out in the first place. All I seem to find are Redhat things. So - I'm basically asking for someone to either help me step-by-step and/or hold my hand thru netboot/netinstall. I'm clueless at this. I have at my disposal a pair of x86 fBSD machines and my Slackware laptop. Once the OS is installed... does it still need to be netboot? All I seem to find are > Redhat things. You need a RARP daemon (since this is what the Sun firmware uses to find out about its own IP address), a DHCP server (that's what FreeBSD uses to find about its boot parameters -- Solaris would use rpc.bootparamd instead), and a TFTP server to supply the bootstrap. Finally (and obviously), you need an NFS server supplying the filesystem(s). Configuring the RARP daemon is simple: setup /etc/ethers, and enable it in your /etc/inetd.conf. If you've got an ethernet interface with more than one IP address, you might want to obtain FreeBSD's latest version of rarpd. Here's a snippet of dhcpd.conf (ISC DHCP) I've been using to netboot one of my machines: host HOSTNAME { hardware ethernet 08:00:20:XX:XX:XX; fixed-address HOSTNAME; option host-name "HOSTNAME"; always-reply-rfc1048 on; filename "kernel"; option root-path "SERVERIPADDRESS:/cdrom"; } HOSTNAME is the intented name of your host (should be in DNS in order to be used for `fixed-address', too). Note the use of an IP address for SERVERIPADDRESS -- this avoids the requirement of DNS lookups when mounting the root FS. In the above case, the boot server was serving the image of the installation CD-ROM for a machine that was unwilling to boot directly off that CD. (You can read about it in the archives of this list.) The TFTP server must be the same machine that runs rarpd, and the boot image must have the hexadecimal client's IP address as its name (using the TFTP daemon's default directory, typically /tftpboot). The actual file to supply is /boot/loader (right from the CD-ROM in my case). This is normally done using a symlink from /tftpboot/loader to /tftpboot/C0A80301 (example: 192.168.3.1). That's about all, type "boot net" then on your client. > Once the OS is installed... does it still need to be netboot? I think so, since the SCSI controller isn't supported at all (as I understand the docs). > PS: If anyone needs to have an E450 disposed of, feel free to ship it to > me ;) I've got an E450 as my machine to play with FreeBSD/sparc64... but even if I could give it away, shipping it overseas alone would probably exceed the current value of that machine. Ken, do you feel like rolling a snapshot release for sparc64 and sticking it on ftp-master? Yes, I ported the NetBSD esp driver and committed it to the tree a few nights ago. It _only_ supports the FAS366 silicon that is found in the FEPS chip (i.e. only Ultra1e and Ultra2) at this time. Supporting the esp100 in the Ultra1 isn't too hard, but there were issues with the DMA attachment that I didn't want to tackle without having hardware directly available. I now have an Ultra1 coming my way so I'll fix esp for that and hopefully make the lnc driver work also. As for the prospects of getting a new sparc64 snapshot made for esp, I've just been told that the scsi cd driver is having problems with esp that result in a panic. I don't have a cd drive in my ultra2, so I never came across it. I'll see if I can dig up a drive and tackle this. Until it's fixed, a new CD snapshot probably doesn't have much value. What does 'pciconf -lv' show? In any case, the asr driver has absolutely no chance of working on sparc64 or any other non-i386 architecture. It is neither 64-bit clean nor endian clean, and it is missing the code needed to work with 64-bit s/g lists. What is the partition layout you're setting up in sysinstall? Partition b is usually swap. How do you have the disks cabled in the machine? What controllers are you using? Your dmesg seems to be finding one of the builtin channels (the one the CDROM is attached to) but no others. How many Ethernet interfaces does this machine have? I'm counting 9, so that's probably 2 quad cards and the one builtin. Also unattached devices won't show up in the boot messages unless you use -v. Check 'pciconf -lv' to see if the device is out there. > sym0: <875> port 0x400-0x4ff mem 0x12000-0x12fff,0x10000-0x100ff at device 3.0 on pci0 > sym0: No NVRAM, ID 7, Fast-20, SE, parity checking > sym1: <875> port 0x800-0x8ff mem 0x16000-0x16fff,0x14000-0x140ff at device 2.0 on pci0 > sym1: No NVRAM, ID 7, Fast-20, SE, parity checking Here's the factory controller for the first 4 disk slots.
