How can I get this to build? You must get current firefox and mozilla port, not one old mozilla and new firefox or whatever. The Makefile.common does exists and I would recommend you to pull full ports tree by either CVSup, portsnap or so that get full update ports tree. I won't support any further if you keep just get a port by yourself. I am on a clean install of FreeBSD 6. I went into the usr/ports/www/firefox directory and started the make. It was going fine until it checked the dependency on glib20. I did a "make deinstall" on it and a "make reinstall" and that seemed to help. Firefox build continued until I got to atk. I then did a "make deinstall" and a "make reinstall" on it and now the firefox build complains because the version of atk I built was 1.9 and firefox is looking for 1.0.0. What should I do to get it to build now? I don't have atk 1.0.0. Also, on the ports web page (http://www.freebsd.org/ports), I see this statement, 'Each ``port'' listed here contains any patches necessary to make the original application source code compile and run on FreeBSD. Installing an application is as simple as downloading the port, unpacking it and typing make in the port directory.' It seems a lot of ports don't follow this philosophy. Thanks for any help you can provide, John __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Could you please visit http://people.freebsd.org/~fenner/portsurvey/gnome@freebsd.org.html and correct the problems listed there? The individual ports with problems are graphics/gimp1,x11-toolkits/guile-gtk. If you have already corrected the problems and submitted a PR, please accept my thanks and apologies for the delay in getting the fixes into the tree. This reminder is created automatically and does not (yet) have a way to know if a PR fixing the problem has been submitted. Please do *NOT* send your response to me directly; I do not necessarily have time to commit your fix; please instead submit a PR via 'send-pr' so it doesn't get lost. Problems are usually of two types: 1. The software package has been upgraded and the version in the port has been removed. The best solution to this problem is to upgrade the port to the most current version of the software package. If you are a FreeBSD committer, then you can just upgrade the port directly. If not, you should create the updated port on your own machine, test it (and maybe even run "portlint" on it), and then use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -uNr old-port updated-port". If you added or deleted any files, please make an explicit note of it. 2. The mirror site being used no longer contains the software package in question, or no longer exists. Solutions include: a) If there are other mirror sites, just remove the bad site from the list. (Make sure that what appears to be a bad site isn't actually a problem of type 1, upgrade) b) If the README or other support files in the software documentation mention where to get the software package, use one of those sites. c) Use a search engine to find another place to get the original DISTFILES. Make sure that you don't pick a FreeBSD distfiles mirror -- if you can't find any other places where the file exists, it can be a LOCAL_PORT or you can simply comment out the MASTER_SITES= line, with a comment explaining why. Once you have a solution, use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -u" of the Makefile. Note that this isn't an urgent issue, as people who try to build the port now will just fall back to the FreeBSD distfiles mirror. Please just put it on your list to do and get to it when you have time. These messages will continue to arrive twice a month until the fix is committed, as a reminder. Thanks, Bill "distfiles" Fenner. Had a few problems upgrading to 2.12, but eventually got the update script to complete without error. However, I have no way to start gnome. I have gdm_enable="YES" in my /etc/rc.conf, but I can't find gdm anywhere. I no longer have /usr/X11R6/sbin, where gdm and its siblings lived. If I do locate gdm I still have /usr/X11R6/etc/gdm/gdm.conf and a bunch of stuff under my home, but no application. The handbook describes a manual start: :Once you have the GNOME 2.12 desktop installed, GNOME 2.12 :can be started by adding the following line to ~/.xsession :or ~/.xinitrc, as appropriate: : :exec gnome-session I have no gnome-session on my system. If I do a locate the results are similar to gdm; lots of support files but no executables. I decided to install the x11/gnomesession port. It wants to install samba-libsmbclient. That fails during configuration, claiming that FreeBSD does not do file locking: "checking configuration summary... ERROR: No locking available. Running Samba would be unsafe." This morning I upgraded to 5.4-STABLE, hoping that this would satisfy the fcntl test script, but it did not help. I keep my ports tree on an NFS share. I don't think this is the problem because the test file the script creates is on /tmp. Any suggestions? I got around it by install the gnomevfs2 package. That installed more stuff. I returned to the build of gnomesession, and it completed. I still can't find gdm, but gnome-session is there. Alas, I set up .xinitrc to exec gnome-session, and all I get is the spalsh screen and an error: There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon. Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may no work correctly. The Settings Daemon restarted too many times. The last error message was: Failed to activate 'OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon' GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in. Back at the command line I see where Gnome was trying to use a theme called Gorilla. I don't have that, but I do have AgingGorilla. Time to go pick up my wife and do some Christmas shopping.
