Try to take /sys/dev/ata from a fresh -current and let me know if that helps you. ------------------------------------- 8< ------------------------------------- I found Doug Ambrisko's ata patch (at http://www.ambrisko.com/doug/ata/ata_stable_sata_8.patch) but I don't know how to patch it properly. Three files seem to be missing from my 5.3-Release installation: sys/dev/ata/atapi-all.c, sys/isa/sio.c, and sys/kern/subr_diskslice.c Are those files not in 5.3 and only in 6.0-Current? I imagine that I can't just apply the patch anyway - but please let me know if I'm mistaken. Any ideas to help me out are immensely appreciated! Am not sure which product fits my needs best. What I have: - 2 SATA disks that support NCQ (Native Command queueing) ad4: 152627MB [310101/16/63] at ata2-master UDMA33 ad6: 152627MB [310101/16/63] at ata3-master UDMA33 What I need: - I want to be totally independend of special driver software for FreeBSD, Windows XP - Hardware RAID The controller should present the mirrored disks as "one" disk to BIOS / OS - RAID levels and maintenance should be doable on BIOS level Features I'd like: - support for migration to bigger disks - hot swap of disks (ability to unplug SATA cable) and maybe power, though Im not sure if my power supply supports this Since I currently only plan to use RAID-1 for 2 SATA disks Im not sure, if I should pay the double price and buy the bigger one to get more "headroom" for the future (RAID-5, or 2x RAID-1). Are there maybe some cool reasons/features to buy the 9500-S4LP ? Some shops refer to a different model: 9500S-4HD. ^^ Is this an older model ? Or only a typo ? In reviews I read something about other controller: - Intel SRCS16 - LSI Mega RAID 150-4, -6 - ICP Vortex 8546 RZ One people noted, that one should stay away from the Intel RAID controllers, as well as Promise and others. Is it common experience, that the 3ware products are best RAID controllers ? Better than the above mentioned ? Or offer other controllers possibly some other cool features the 3ware doesn't offer ? I connected a Western Digital 120GB Hard disk to the ATA-100 disk and can boot freebsd of the ATA-100. The problem with this is that ATA_STATIC_ID option turned on, then lists the drive as ad4, which means at boot time, the system keeps probing for ad0, and my bootup is basically stalled for about 60 seconds while the ata driver tries to get around the fact that I have no ad0. I can't get ATA-100 support on ad0 because the Highpoint RAID controller is setup that way. There are four IDE slots and only two ATA-100 slots. Is there any configuration options besides installing a small boot drive that can be used to get rid of the 60 second stall on startup. # atacontrol list ATA channel 0: Master: no device present Slave: no device present ATA channel 1: Master: acd0 ATA/ATAPI revision 0 Slave: no device present ATA channel 2: Master: ad4 ATA/ATAPI revision 6 Slave: no device present ATA channel 3: Master: no device present Slave: no device present # atacontrol info 2 Master: ad4 ATA/ATAPI revision 6 Slave: no device present Attached is the dmesg output. I have just installed FreeBSD 5.3 on a Compaq Proliant 8500 system. I noticed I get a lot of these errors: ida0: soft read error ida0: soft write error that 80% of the time prevent me from even booting the system. The drives in the system are two of FUJITSU MAG3182L SUN18G 1111 drives arranged to be mirrored by the internal Smart Array 4200 controller. These drives are confirmed to be good, and I've seen this same exact problem with other drive brand, model, and size, and number configurations. These errors come up even after erasing the logical volume, and creating a new one, so it is not because the controller is busy rebuilding a volume. Either way, the system has been up long enough that this should be finished. None of the drives are reported as failed. Also, when I boot without ACPI enabled, I am unable to see any PCI devices. I saw that somebody else had this problem, but after a dmesg output, there were no other replies regarding it. I wonder if there is any BIOS setting and ACPI on/off combination I can use that will allow me to use my controller, and still be able to use my NIC on the PCI bus. Once I was able to boot with ACPI disabled and I was able to use the controller without seeing any of the soft error messages, but I was unable to use my NIC, and didnt thoroughly test it out if FreeBSD was accessing the controller properly. So, my first question is: Is FreeBSD or the drives causing those soft error messages? My second question is: Is there any way to access my PCI devices with ACPI disabled? Please give me a hint on what I can do Thanks, Andrew (Don't forget to CC me) From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 2 07:10:18 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B99F716A4D7 for ; Wed, 2 Feb 2005 07:10:18 +0000 (GMT) Received: from sasami.jurai.net (sasami.jurai.net [69.17.104.113]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3BD8A43D54 for ; Wed, 2 Feb 2005 07:10:18 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from mdodd@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from sasami.jurai.net (winter@sasami.jurai.net [69.17.104.113]) by sasami.jurai.net (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j127AEFV021715; Wed, 2 Feb 2005 02:10:17 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from mdodd@FreeBSD.ORG) Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2005 02:10:13 -0500 (EST) From: "Matthew N. I then saw the online light blinking. After many hours of this, it went solid on, and the problems are still happening. I can only assume that the array finished rebuilding. Even when rebooting, the raid controller doesn't make any (more) mention of rebuilding array. It used to when the light was blinking. This problem happens even with just one drive, and the errors aren't harmless, because the system will just hang and stop responding, sometimes the system doesn't recover and has to be power cycled. I was going to use that program given to me, but untarring the kernel source tree would cause programs to hang indefinitely on biord...and then I wouldnt be able to get it done. In the mean time, I will try doing this to a memory device, instead of on disk. Does anybody have experience using non-"compaq certified" hard drives with this controller? In doing so, I found out that the exact model of the array controller is "Integrated Smart Array," not smart array 4200. for reference, http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/17363.html was the exact link I used. I used a linux rescue disk and executed that file from a floppy. After upgrading the ROM, the loading of the kernel by BTX goes 5 times faster than it did before, but I still get the same errors with the same frequency. I think it may be related to FreeBSD's driver, and not the controller itself, because no problems are shown during bootup, or array rebuilding. I can try a kernel from a 6-CURRENT snapshot. I'll find out if -CURRENT has diverged uncompatably from 5.3-RELEASE's world. If so, I can just re-install with a -CURRENT snapshot. Instead of the array locking up, could it be the drives? They're modern drives, but they are not the same models "approved and proven" by Compaq. I also saw a couple ACPI related crashes, where the kernel traps while it's displaying the trap info...One of those scrolling crashes. I wasn't able to save any relevent information from them, though, which I am sorry about. I am going to set up the machine for serial console, so this can be logged, and I can try to reproduce the error. Thanks, Andrew -----Original Message----- From: Matthew N. (ie. pull-out xp, and plug in fbsd). i recently purchased another hdd+tray to install gentoo on, just to see what the fuss is about. i booted off the 2004.3 minimal install cd but it did not, unfortuanately, automatically find my realtek gigabit nic. i suspected it might not, because i had a hell of time getting it to work on fbsd aswell - requiring a patched if_sk driver to get it going. after a bit of digging, i found that i could # modprobe sk98lin to get the kernel happy with the nic. once up, it worked like a charm. it got late and i needed to finish up some work on fbsd, so i pulled the gentoo drive out, plugged fbsd back in and booted up. when it came up, i found that i was without a network! # dmesg | grep sk said something about (IIRC) (blah) skc0: no PHY found # ifconfig confirmed that there was no net when i tried to manually # kldload if_sk freebsd panic'ed and died right there! i rebooted a few times (a trick i learnt from ms) but still it would not come back. even powering the machine completely down did not help!!! so i plugged in the winxp drive and booted. it came up fine, network in good working order. i booted fbsd again and the network came up this time without a complaint! AND I CAN REPLICATE THIS MADNESS! boot fbsd - check network = all okay boot gentoo livecd - load sk98lin - check network = all okay boot fbsd - check network = notwork! (remedy) boot wxp - check network = all okay boot fbsd - check network = all okay wtf??? i understand that my GF would be upset if i played around with other girls, but does my OS have to be *so damn jealous*???? any ideas whats on here? -- craig@small-pla.net From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 3 00:32:51 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CD04D16A4D0 for ; Thu, 3 Feb 2005 00:32:51 +0000 (GMT) Received: from server2.troikatek.com (server2.troikatek.com [66.135.32.168]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 702E543D46 for ; Thu, 3 Feb 2005 00:32:51 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from aheyn@jmsent.com) Received: (qmail 2577 invoked from network); 3 Feb 2005 01:27:12 -0000 Received: from ns.jmsent.com (HELO AREILLPC) (66.9.27.146) by server2.troikatek.com with SMTP; 3 Feb 2005 01:27:12 -0000 From: "Andrew Heyn" To: Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2005 19:33:17 -0800 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook IMO, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2910.0) X-MIMEOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1441 Importance: Normal In-Reply-To: <20050202110329.G76517@sasami.jurai.net> Subject: RE: Compaq Smart Array 4200 controller question X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 03 Feb 2005 00:32:52 -0000 Hi, I got a 6-CURRENT kernel so I could show you the messages it creates when it times out. The change to report the error was added recently but I don't see how reporting errors could cause your problem. I suspect the firmware on the controller is locking up. Code in -CURRENT will perform a register dump on command timeout, which is the usual indicator of a lockup. I'd go looking for the latest firmware for your controller. -- 10 40 80 C0 00 FF FF FF FF C0 00 00 00 00 10 AA AA 03 00 00 00 08 00 From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 3 02:45:14 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D0EB916A4CE for ; Thu, 3 Feb 2005 02:45:14 +0000 (GMT) Received: from sasami.jurai.net (sasami.jurai.net [69.17.104.113]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 716B743D2D for ; Thu, 3 Feb 2005 02:45:14 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from mdodd@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from sasami.jurai.net (winter@sasami.jurai.net [69.17.104.113]) by sasami.jurai.net (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j132jBnF011250; Wed, 2 Feb 2005 21:45:13 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from mdodd@FreeBSD.ORG) Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2005 21:45:11 -0500 (EST) From: "Matthew N. It would be a good idea to prove whether or not the error is caused by a difference in those two drivers. How could I use this CMD_SENSE_DRV_STATUS to provide you with more debugging information? After those errors, ./idacontrol show still shows the controller uptime's unchanged. I dont believe the embedded controller has any lights...If it does, I dont know where they are located. I am waiting for some compaq drives to be shipped to me, so I can see whether or not the drives interaction with the controller is at fault. I noticed that with 6-CURRENT the machine doesn't crash anymore and reboot when the controller stops responding. It tended to before... Instead, whatever program that caused the problem hangs on a kernel function forever, and subsequent reads/writes kinda work...in the same manner as they did(n't) before. Ah, you'd have to add some code to 'idacontrol' to submit the command and display the results. I can come up with this code in the evening if you don't mind the wait. -- 10 40 80 C0 00 FF FF FF FF C0 00 00 00 00 10 AA AA 03 00 00 00 08 00 From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 3 17:10:32 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5894E16A4D0 for ; Thu, 3 Feb 2005 17:10:32 +0000 (GMT) Received: from sasami.jurai.net (sasami.jurai.net [69.17.104.113]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5B09743D2F for ; Thu, 3 Feb 2005 17:10:27 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from mdodd@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from sasami.jurai.net (winter@sasami.jurai.net [69.17.104.113]) by sasami.jurai.net (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j13HAOFM075790; Thu, 3 Feb 2005 12:10:26 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from mdodd@FreeBSD.ORG) Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2005 12:10:24 -0500 (EST) From: "Matthew N. If a program is using I/O when the controller decides to be uncooperative, there's a chance that it will recover, and continue on, and there's also a chance that it will be stuck in-kernel forever waiting for the data. Meanwhile, other program _can_ access data...until they get stuck some time later in the kernel. root 2865 0.0 0.0 1312 860 p0 D 11:28AM 0:06.71 find / Thu Feb 3 12:20:53 UTC 2005 top says that find is stuck in 'ufs' Meanwhile, I catted 6.0-CURRENT-20050202-SESNAP.tar.bz2 to /dev/null It took quite a few seconds the first time, and subsequent times took a much shorter amount of time. I can also cat /dev/ida0xxx to /dev/null, and all sorts of other I/O...while that find is stuck in-kernel. Anything else I can do to help? Thanks, Andrew -----Original Message----- From: Matthew N. If the file you are writing is larger than (700MB?) it won't write on anything. If you're trying to write one big 7 gig file, it won't work. If you have 7 gigs worth of files smaller than 700 meg each, then it should work just fine. I'm assuming that your referring to a warm reboot AKA you never turned the machine off. Not all hardware is fully reset on a warm reboot. It's possible the linux driver is leaving the hardware in a different state when you reboot that the freebsd driver doesn't check for. The windows driver probably does since the manufacture wrote that driver, not some random person trying to reverse engineer it. Not to say they didn't do a good job, but just that little details are harder to catch sometime. I bet if you fully shut the system down that freebsd will work fine without rebooting. Is there any way of doing a dump of all the PCI registers so one of the developers might be able to find what's different? pciconf might be able to. > > AND I CAN REPLICATE THIS MADNESS! > > boot fbsd > - check network = all okay > boot gentoo livecd > - load sk98lin > - check network = all okay > boot fbsd > - check network = notwork! > > (remedy) > boot wxp > - check network = all okay > boot fbsd > - check network = all okay > > > wtf??? > > i understand that my GF would be upset if i played around with other > girls, but does my OS have to be *so damn jealous*???? > > any ideas whats on here? > > -- > craig@small-pla.net > _______________________________________________ > freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions > To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" -- I sense much NT in you. I've posted a question about choosing motherboard for FreeBSD server, with no answer (actually I did get an answer from bsdsystems.com guys, but it would be little overkill to buy server overseas :), so I continued to choose, and here are my candidates: TYAN Thunder K8SPro MSI K8D Master3-133 both seem to have same chipset by AMD, same SiI3114 SATA controller and same Broadcom BCM5704C gigabit network card, which should be fairly supported by FreeBSD (at least hardware notes says so). Now, my question is - do somebody have any of these boards? Any troubles wit them? Anybody can recomend better motherboard for a dual opteron server? Well, mine ignores anything over 700 MB that's a single file. I must admit though, the machine that's doing that only has a single layer writer in it. You might double check or swap out your cable on that drive - it might make all the difference as far as how it's detected. Between 3.9G and 4.9G, there is a 4G boundary which may interfere if your file system supports only 32 bits. I've had similar issues with a FAT32 and an ext2fs partitions and huge backups - that's why I fly only with UFS partitions under FBSD 5.3 and wiped out Linux from the disk. Note that video DVDs are organized with several video files (often not exceeding 1G). My cent worth...
