When you updated your ports you didn't remove what was already there. The version of the port that was already on your system contained a few patches that are now in patch 7. I did that a couple of weeks ago so you're not alone! Solution: Either rm -Rf the the entire ports tree and update it again or just rm -Rf /usr/ports/java/jdk14 and update that port again. Any hints where to set the env vars for catalina? You set: CATALINA_OPTS="-server -Xms400m -Xmx700m -Djava.awt.headless=true" Why the -server argument? Only adding something like CATALINA_OPTS="-Xmx512M" wouldn't be allright? I mean, wouldn't that overule other vars in catalina.sh? Woulnd't be CATALINA_OPTS+= be better? Bye, Mipam. Why don't you use that one instead of the www/jakarta-tomcat4 version. You may have to tweak the jakarta-tomcat5/Makefile config slightly though. Hmm, you're suggesting this: tomcat50ctl start -server -Xmx128m and tomcatctl is called from the script in /usr/local/etc/rc.d However, wouldn't it be more wishful rename 020.jakarta-tomcat50.sh to tomcat50.sh and have a variable in /etc/rc.conf like: tomcat50_enable="YES" and tomcat50_flags="-Xmx512M ...." for example? and something in tomcat50.sh like: # PROVIDE: tomcat50 # REQUIRE: NETWORKING SERVERS # BEFORE: DAEMON # KEYWORD: FreeBSD shutdown name="tomcat50" rcvar=`set_rcvar` start_precmd="tomcat50_precmd" etc etc. This way it'll be more like the freebsd standard rc style. Of course additional changes in the makefile have to be made to make this work? Bye, Mipam. The server has an Athlon XP 2600+ processor and 512 MB of = memory. The application services around 700 concurrent clients during peak hours = and creates at least one thread for each connection, with many = connections requiring 2+ threads. The total number of threads during = peak hours is usually between 1600 and 2200. The problem: During peak hours, the JVM dies several times an hour with = no indication of why. Nothing is written to stdout or stderr, there's no = log file, no core dump, and nothing in /var/log/messages. Late at night, when the number of concurrent users drops to 300-400, = there are no crashes and the JVM runs stable for several hours until the = next day. FWIW, I tried linux-sun-jdk-1.4.2.07_1 but the results were even worse: = The JVM would crash extremely often (I don't think it ever lasted longer = than 5 minutes), but at least it did write an error log file and a core = dump. The error log file always began with: > An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the = VM. > Unexpected Signal : 11 occurred at PC=3D0x81B9EE8 > Function=3D[Unknown.] > Library=3D(N/A) The backtrace shown in the "Current Java thread" section of the error = log file was different every time, but it usually pointed to parts of my = code that either created a new thread or interrupted an existing thread. This problem does not occur when the application is run on Linux. Any clues? The java process remains in state "kserel". I can kill eclipse, which makes the splash go away, but the java process remains (in state "STOP" now) forever. Back then this was caused by mixed threading libs (at least I thought so), and I could make work by setting up an appropriate libmap.conf. However, about two weeks ago I suddenly saw this behaviour again. Well, meanwhile I did two gnome-updates, one kde-update, one perl-update and some smaller updates on this machine, so I think the threading-lib problem is not an issue anymore (at least I cannot find old links using ldd on randomly chosen binaries). So I gave it a try without libmap and with different entries than I used before (libkse, libc_r, libpthread, I tried each and every combination). Strange enough, it /sometimes/ worked for some startups of eclipse, but then went back to the behaviour described above, so maybe the reason lies elsewhere?! Just to make sure, I recompiled eclipse with portupgrade -R -f, but the problem is still there. Meanwhile, I havn't been able to start eclipse for two days (and I tried it quite a lot of times :-). This is the only machine where I see this problem. I have several other machines here (running 5.2.1 and 5.3-stable), which all work fine. The one with the problem is running 5.3-STABLE, latest eclipse and jdk14 from ports. However, the only real difference to the other boxes may be that it's an SMP station (2 x P3-933). Are there any hints how to get eclipse started on this machine again? I'd really like to do my software development on it, because it has plenty of RAM and is the fastest box around. cu Gerrit -- From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 16 08:10:23 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 48A8016A4D2 for ; Wed, 16 Mar 2005 08:10:23 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C975C43D49 for ; Wed, 16 Mar 2005 08:10:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j2G8AM7X014389 for ; Wed, 16 Mar 2005 08:10:22 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j2G8AMG8014388; Wed, 16 Mar 2005 08:10:22 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2005 08:10:22 GMT Message-Id: <200503160810.j2G8AMG8014388@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org From: "Ari Suutari" Subject: Re: ports/38018: www/jakarta-tomcat4: make passing of JVM arguments possible X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Ari Suutari List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2005 08:10:23 -0000 The following reply was made to PR ports/38018; it has been noted by GNATS. If the > problem persists, try using java_g instaead of java and maybe run that > under gdb and see if you can get a trace. I upgraded to 5.4-PRERELEASE yesterday and the problem persists. I've noticed something that may be of interest, though: Until yesterday, I had been running the JVM with the -Xmx256m parameter. If I didn't, the JVM would run out of memory and threads would die with java.lang.OutOfMemoryError exceptions. This happened on Linux as well, and using -Xmx256m got rid of those errors. However, on FreeBSD, -Xmx256m appears to be the cause of my random, silent crashes: If I change it to, say, -Xmx128m, the JVM no longer crashes. But it does run out of memory because 128 MB is not enough, so that's not an acceptable solution. To summarize: -Xmx256m: Fine on Linux, random silent crashes on FreeBSD. -Xmx128m: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError exceptions on both OSs. Does this help at all? By now I'm pretty much sure that the crashes I'm experiencing are memory-management-related; otherwise they shouldn't go away when changing the value of -Xmx. Interesting. We regularly run an x86 jdk14 on amd64 under Linux at work. So I don't believe there is any fundamental reason this shouldn't work. I will gladly try things, and I won't jump on you if you guess wrong, so help, if you can. The current problem is, I can't build jdk14 directly, it's broken for amd64. I can't build jdk15 directly, it needs a jdk14 bootstrap. The only bootstrap that's available is the Linux java, but the Linux java (at least the Sun one) needs the Linux_base -8 port, and that's only available for the i386, I can't get it for the amd64. Is any version of the jdk14 transferable? If I can just get one temporarily long enough to build the jdk15, I will gladly even let lender onto my system to verify that I destroyed the copy. An overview of the port, including errors seen on the build farm, is included below. portname: java/linux-blackdown-jdk13 forbidden because: Vulnerabilities in the browser plugin build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.firepipe.net/portoverview.py?category=java&portname=linux-blackdown-jdk13 portname: java/linux-ibm-jdk13 forbidden because: Vulnerabilities in the browser plugin build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.firepipe.net/portoverview.py?category=java&portname=linux-ibm-jdk13 If this problem is one that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Recompile your kernel with COMPAT_LINUX32 and LINPROCFS options, mount linprocfs, and proceed per jdk15 port's instructions. Rev. 1.48 of java/linux-sun-jdk14/Makefile and rev. 1.87 of emulators/linux_base-8/Makefile are explicitly note that. At last, *I* have added amd64 support for 1.5 and sure that it works. > not want to turn this machine into a i386 lookalike, as far as libs and > I couldn't convince the uname anyways. Nearly all software would > autodetect the arch and refuse to run. It does. And since it runs on amd64, there's no reason to refuse installation. linux-sun-jdk14 is only required to bootstrap of jdk15. So, after build and install of jdk15 complete, you can safely remove linux_base and linux-sun-jdk14 ports. > Recompile your kernel with COMPAT_LINUX32 and LINPROCFS > >options, mount linprocfs, and proceed per jdk15 port's instructions. > > > >On Fri, Mar 18, 2005 at 05:45:54PM +0000, Chuck Robey wrote: > > > >>as recommended, I just finished downloading all the jdk15 files, and > >>began buiding jdk15, for my machine, which is a dual opteron.
