The last thing I (or I would imagine most developers) would want to do is to send a large quantity of my code to a third party to translate.. If not strikes me as an interesting project for open source collaboration. I do not know whether my impression is accurate or not, but it seems to me that the current approach towards EDI seems to be focused on an exclusive approach towards the distribution of EDI standards rather then open access. I & stand corrected! Thanks :) & Yep and the thing that really ****** me off is that there is a standard for these things and the only way you can get a copy is by paying $ (namny) for it. My idea is there should be an open standard for these things which could be accessible by anyone and be used as a basis for exchange between individuals and small businesses. It been in use by mainframe systems for over 30 years now. Basically its an international standard record format for exchanging purchase orders and shipping information and the like between the suppliers and manufactures in house proprietary applications. Wallmart/Sams stores runs their complete business using it. Other big users is the rubber tire industry and the automobile manufactures Ford, GM, for just-in-time delivery of raw material, as well as the after market auto suppliers. The EDI records format is available to any one who wants to purchase the book from the non-profit organization who maintains the standard. Like $35.00. There are EDI software providers like GE and Gentran who market mainframe applications that convert the user's proprietary in-house record format to EDI format. In the last 10 years these vendors have rewritten their mainframe EDI application to run on ms/windows PCs. But you are correct in that as far as I know there is no Unix flavored EDI applications out there. EDI is not an server based type of application or for that matter an internet transport user either. EDI utilizes dedicated leased lines for maximum security. Cloning the functionality of one of the ms/windows EDI desktop variety for an FreeBSD desktop version should not be an big task. EDI is a specialized nitch market that demands 24/7 technical support from the vendor as EDI in most cases is mission critical to the company using it. This in its self makes the case for an open source Unix flavored verson a hard sell to the community who may want to use it. The other thing is that it is no more mission critical in the current environment than a web server and indeed is now built into web server technology and uses (amongst other things Tomcat, jelly , ocbra and other open source products. What is extremely interesting is it appears that the largest take up of this technology appears to be in Hong Kong and china and is focused on using open source server systems. Using apache, Tomcat and/or Jboss 3. Keeping data, presentation and processing in separate watertight comparments 4. Using sql (probably mysql) 5. Heavy use of XML input/output based on schemas - output using CSS. 6. FreeBSD 5.3 platform for staging server (probably moved to 5.4 before production time (early 2006) 7. Experimenting with Java 5 as well as 1.4 Arguments encouraged David -- 40 yrs navigating and computing in blue waters. English Owner & Captain of British Registered 60' bluewater Ketch S/V Taurus. So, if you manually do (in the jdk14 directory) gcc -lc_r -o work/testos files/testos.c (You may need to manually create the work directory if you've done a "make clean") What happens? The only way the test can fail is if you can't compile that programme. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Thu May 26 05:35:31 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 172B816A420 for ; Thu, 26 May 2005 05:35:31 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd-java@m.gmane.org) Received: from ciao.gmane.org (main.gmane.org [80.91.229.2]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0F92643D54 for ; Thu, 26 May 2005 05:35:28 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd-java@m.gmane.org) Received: from list by ciao.gmane.org with local (Exim 4.43) id 1DbAyz-0004aN-8o for freebsd-java@freebsd.org; Thu, 26 May 2005 07:32:37 +0200 Received: from 69-171-193-20.sbtnvt.adelphia.net ([69.171.193.20]) by main.gmane.org with esmtp (Gmexim 0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 for ; Thu, 26 May 2005 07:32:37 +0200 Received: from scott by 69-171-193-20.sbtnvt.adelphia.net with local (Gmexim 0.1 (Debian)) id 1AlnuQ-0007hv-00 for ; Thu, 26 May 2005 07:32:37 +0200 X-Injected-Via-Gmane: http://gmane.org/ To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org From: "Scott I. It's from Oracle and it has support for creating java database driven applications of any kind (application, JSP, EJBs), it has internal servers for testing and debugging and it's quite easy to use. It's little weak on creating java GUI though (for application or applet), but not many developer tools can do that... It runs on windows. linux, I even made it run on FreeBSD... If you plan to use struts in future, it also support that, and the best it's free, but size of full package is around 250 Mb... The default threading library changed from libc_r to libpthread in 5.3 > However, you should have libc_r on 5.4: ... > So your machine would seem to be somewhat hosed unless you've > deliberately removed libc_r. Well isn't this interesting. I guess I thought it was a "could" instead of a "should". When I updated from 5.2 -> 5.3 I had all sorts of problems with stuff being linked to both libc_r AND libpthread. The mailing lists showed I was one of many. Several people reiterated how you need to be sure to avoid having anything linked to more than one threading library... you want it to be ALL libc_r or ALL libpthread. And with libpthread being the new default, I went with the latter. DuriDuring this transition all sorts of fixes were offered including using libmap.conf in order to ease the transition from libc_r -> libpthread and make everything happy and working again. Some people (myself included) still has issues with things getting linked to libc_r so in order to force things to clearly break so we could clean up the old linkage and get them rebuilt, we deleted /usr/lib/libc_r* which was a step also talked about by many in the mailing lists as part of the steps (Tim Robbins @freebsd.org comes to mind). I don't recall anyone saying to NOT do that, that it could be bad, that libc_r was necessary or anything like that.t. In fact, it was those steps that finally got my system cleaned up and sorted out, and I've been running happily on libpthread without any libc_r references ever since. Dan: I even saw posts from you on the old thread. There was never any mention about the deletion of libc_r* back then as a solution being bad. So I guess I have 2 questions now: 1) If libpthread is the new default, replacing libc_r, and you have to have all things linked to just one or the other, basically libc_r has been depreciated. How come the OS version check for JDK 1.4 wants libc_r if the OS > 5.0? 2) What am I to do now, since the purging of all things libc_r when I upgraded to 5.3 is what ultimately fixed my system and has kept things running smoothly ever since? Sorry for being such a newbie on this, it's just frustrating when you think you've fixed things in an officially-endorsed way, only to learn you've done something horribly wrong. :( From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Thu May 26 16:34:29 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 15CCF16A41C for ; Thu, 26 May 2005 16:34:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: from misty.eyesbeyond.com (glewis.dsl.xmission.com [166.70.56.15]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C57543D53 for ; Thu, 26 May 2005 16:34:28 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: from misty.eyesbeyond.com (localhost.eyesbeyond.com [127.0.0.1]) by misty.eyesbeyond.com (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j4QGYPMh099792; Thu, 26 May 2005 10:34:26 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by misty.eyesbeyond.com (8.13.3/8.13.3/Submit) id j4QGYPnN099791; Thu, 26 May 2005 10:34:25 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) X-Authentication-Warning: misty.eyesbeyond.com: glewis set sender to glewis@eyesbeyond.com using -f Date: Thu, 26 May 2005 10:34:24 -0600 From: Greg Lewis To: "Scott I. So it was correct for a time, but is now out of date.
