After having had some recent hardware difficulties on my system, I thought I would wipe my freebsd partition and reinstall with 5.4. I have repartioned my slice, which should have formatted the partitions that I made (/, /usr, /var, and a swap). I then proceeded to install from CD. I have made three attempts to install 5.4, and have not yet succeeded in getting X to set up in any way. For that matter, even installing simple programs like vim has been unsuccessful. If I use sysinstall, I will get errors about the dependencies already being installed. For example, if something needs Perl 5.8.6, I will get an error that 5.8.5 is already installed. In this case, I then used "make deinstall", followed my "make reinstall" for perl to resolve this. Large packages like KDE3 will generate about a half-dozen or more dependency version errors and then give up. I have reformatted every time that I have tried installing 5.4. Are there programs on the 5.4 CDs (such as perl) that are present in multiple, similar versions? More importantly, is there a way to get sysinstall to use "pkg_add -f" in its installation so that the packages will upgrade rather than barf out errors to me and give up? thanks Lee From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Sep 20 16:31:34 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 893DB16A41F for ; Tue, 20 Sep 2005 16:31:34 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ckleski@mbc.edu) Received: from mbc.edu (mail.mbc.edu [216.57.240.65]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5EF6D43D53 for ; Tue, 20 Sep 2005 16:31:33 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ckleski@mbc.edu) DKIM-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nowsp; d=mbc.edu; s=MDaemon; t=1127233878; x=1127838678; i=ckleski@mbc.edu; q=dns; h=DomainKey-Signature: Received:From:To:Subject:Date:User-Agent:References:In-Reply-To: MIME-Version:Content-Type:Content-Transfer-Encoding: Content-Disposition:Message-Id; b=hFHgazyNxwGTw3SiIw8VBTIrhfMSV1D gdk/yC1alWE/MHkBQzkWLhBmKEMwXmu4ANHEUTCTben2pJLPS6GssJaNZJE3lTI/ xtlJvGf2K6bMm5IVlzfDThH99skTr/ofZP90atHVTNRDaiyEBn541RnnMtH1C0VL FswQcG250W9A= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; s=MDaemon; d=mbc.edu; c=simple; q=dns; h=from:message-id; b=lNgf7Hb7mnlr3RX5U1oDz04ocByXb65evzN6A65eOIkJ1K/lIwTdQvkedBQhwotmPvZVx+Muy5wFvzD2O5wRENR+6TaIlB1VxL28lsopOhk8gFjTXHVud6h+5iAJ5UTQp7YAgPlMq95S0lD8ZEAQUEwGlRSKtYWAQVmfr1KIDzU=; Received: from [192.168.0.100] by mbc.edu (Cipher TLSv1:RC4-MD5:128) (MDaemon.PRO.v8.1.3.R) with ESMTP id md50006732229.msg for ; Tue, 20 Sep 2005 12:31:18 -0400 From: Craig Kleski To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org, Dan Langille Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005 12:32:46 +0000 User-Agent: KMail/1.8.1 References: <432F2C46.23791.69074D6@localhost> In-Reply-To: <432F2C46.23791.69074D6@localhost> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200509201232.46942.ckleski@mbc.edu> X-SortMonster-MessageSniffer-Message: md50006732229.msg X-SortMonster-MessageSniffer-Rules: tgibseut-MDPv0.53b (SNFv2-3.1i2) No patterns matched. My network card is a Cisco 350 PCMCIA card. I'm experiencing a very high rate of interrupts during heavy network traffic. The laptop becomes very sluggish to respond. The more traffic through the interface, the higher the number of interrupts and the more sluggish the laptop becomes. I've searched the mailing list archives and the web, but haven't been able to find anything relevant. This Cisco card works fine in every other laptop I have. I suspect it might be a cardbus problem, but I don't know how to resolve it or troubleshoot it any further. I've tried disabling ACPI and that hasn't helped. Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions? Any help would be much appreciated. Here is the output from a "vmstat -i", a "systat -iostat", and my boot time dmesg. I think you can add '-V' to moused, from moused(8) -V Enable ``Virtual Scrolling'', with this option set, holding th= e middle mouse button down will cause motion to be interpreted a= s scrolling. Use the -U option to set the distance the mouse mu= st move before the scrolling mode is activated. I'm quite happy with this :-) Regards, Rong-En Fan From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Sep 21 05:54:43 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 947C416A41F for ; Wed, 21 Sep 2005 05:54:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kjelderg@gmail.com) Received: from rproxy.gmail.com (rproxy.gmail.com [64.233.170.200]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2658D43D46 for ; Wed, 21 Sep 2005 05:54:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kjelderg@gmail.com) Received: by rproxy.gmail.com with SMTP id i8so246064rne for ; Tue, 20 Sep 2005 22:54:42 -0700 (PDT) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:reply-to:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=LH8ltjJrdCIW+8vGtMwPcOXEmItYbsxnADKkqu9+B6B0Akb+w8OKuFYFY1yk+ylWTfdZltEmbThTfSCS1Hu9nlBHMlsxYx+VRTKbR7tSkFI3QP5Q6oldaDQlzwwqKIK4WCJGnFctKvaHJmWmNstPk+JeIIajqQBI5Rlbx9U9lQg= Received: by 10.38.78.37 with SMTP id a37mr298019rnb; Tue, 20 Sep 2005 22:54:42 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.38.101.21 with HTTP; Tue, 20 Sep 2005 22:54:42 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: Date: Wed, 21 Sep 2005 00:54:42 -0500 From: Eric Kjeldergaard To: Jochen Gensch In-Reply-To: <43309474.10104@gmx.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline References: <43309474.10104@gmx.de> Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Thinkpad middle button for scrolling? I have moused_flags=3D"-VH" for moused to get both horizontal and vertical scrolling. The -H option is rather new (-CURRENT and maybe the 6 series). Check the man page to see if the -H option exists for your particular moused (if the person that wrote the feature was nice enough to also update the man page). --=20 If I write a signature, my emails will appear more personalised. This brings up something I have been thinking about. Someone mentioned that the ipw problems I've been having on my T41 could be resolved by changing ton an Atheros based NIC. Question: have you replaced your wireless NIC? On my T41 it is internal. I'm told it's a matter of replacing it. I understand, but haven't looked into buying an Atheros NIC and putting it in my Thinkpad, but seeing as I'm going to be in the US next week, I might just pick one up while I'm there. Comments please. -- Dan Langille : http://www.langille.org/ BSDCan - The Technical BSD Conference - http://www.bsdcan.org/ From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Sep 21 13:41:47 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3F98E16A41F for ; Wed, 21 Sep 2005 13:41:47 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from rainer@ultra-secure.de) Received: from bsd.ultra-secure.de (bsd.ultra-secure.de [62.146.20.26]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7301443D45 for ; Wed, 21 Sep 2005 13:41:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from rainer@ultra-secure.de) Received: (qmail 85697 invoked by uid 89); 21 Sep 2005 13:41:42 -0000 Received: by simscan 1.1.0 ppid: 85658, pid: 85663, t: 7.0811s scanners: attach: 1.1.0 clamav: 0.86.2/m:33/d:1045 spam: 3.0.4 Received: from unknown (HELO ?192.168.100.179?) I think you also need to "hack" the IBM BIOS to accept the "alien" card... I think I've read a feature in the German "c't" about how to do the former (changing the wireless NIC), including pictures. But that was some time ago. I don't know if it is even possible in current Notebook-models. The physical swap is pretty easy. Just open the access door in the bottom of the unit, unplug the antenna wires and pop out the mini-PCI card. Then reverse to add the new card. In the past, ThinkPads have BIOS set to refuse to allow the system to boot if any mini-PCI card not of a type sold by IBM was seen. I don't know if the T43 still does this, but you can deal with this in a couple of ways: 1. Get the Cisco card that Lenovo sells 2. Hack BIOS to not get upset about it. Will it work? No. Read this first then call IBM to complain. The IBM BIOS is designed to keep them from working (last update Sept 10, 2004). The BIOS will stop before it reaches the stage of booting an OS if you insert one. It's not a bug, since the diagnostic that shows up quite clearly complains about it being a non-standard miniPCI card. At least, this is the case with our T30, and we find it unlikely that IBM decided that they would no longer include this 'feature'. They claim it has to do with FCC certification. While we're not endorsing this in any way, here is a very fine link to a group who are working to correct the situation: http://www.paul.sladen.org/thinkpad-r31/wifi-card-pci-ids.html also see http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~mjg59/thinkpad/wireless.html Here is another suggested hack: Remove miniPCI card from laptop (if it's currently installed) Boot into WinXP Shutdown into 'standby' mode Install Adapter Wakeup from Standby mode XP should see and install the adapter drivers and it should then your miniPCI card will work Whenever you reboot you will have to go through this procedure again.. The thumb rule is to disallow everything else than the services you want to be able to access from the outside. FreeBSD makes it easy with 3 firewalling systems avaliable and pretty decent scripts. Read /etc/defaults/rc.conf to find out more about the options to put to your /etc/rc.conf to enable and quickly configure your firewall. FreeBSD makes it fairly simple to set up and use with the options in /etc/rc.conf, and I rarely have any need to tweak it. I have a fairly lightly modified "CLIENT" type firewall. DHCP is an issue, but a quick script at boot can be used to grab the dynamic IP without too much trouble. Otherwise I really do not have performance issues, connectivity problems, etc, that are worth mentioning. I like to keep a decent eye on security, but to my knowledge I have never run into an occasion where someone has tried to hack me into my laptop through wireless or wired, in a way that would work. I have certainly seen attempted MS-Windows hacks, etc. But nothing that would actually effect FreeBSD. I keep the system fairly up to date, and rarely have any problems with security. (The problems I have had, a firewall would not fix anyway.) I highly suspect that I could stop using the firewall all together and it would not make that much of a difference. So do you need a firewall? Probably not. But since it is really not that hard to set up and manage on FreeBSD, I would advise anyone to use one if they can. -- Marius M. Rex Sr. System Admin. A pro would be that a firewall enables you to keep people from accessing your laptop remotely. WiFi connections aren't that secure, unless you encrypt the traffic. So if your laptop is not a server, use a firewall to disable all incoming packets except those related to connections you initiated. That way you can secure necessary services like mail and printin= g. > I mean it's not like I am running Windows and have to bloat it with all= =20 > McAfee, Zonealarm ad infinitum -- or do I? I've got pf on my workstation. I haven't noticed any performance or network speed loss while using it. So I can see few reasons not to use a firewall. If you're not running windows, don't bother with a virus scanner. Do filter your mail for spam, though. Fry's is advertising it for $29.95 this weekend. It's the KWORLD NB-TV100 and the spec are at: http://www.kworld.com.tw/en/product/analog/007/a07.htm Any hope that this might work with bktr(4)? I'm tempted to get one just to play with. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. Hope? Yes. I don't see anything in the spec that we'll have trouble meeting. If Zoom Video is required, we're not going to work. Try one and find out. It is only $30 after all. I'll be happy to help you out if it isn't too horrible, or be available as a consultant if it is too horrible ;-) Warner From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Sep 24 03:27:35 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9B9E616A41F for ; Sat, 24 Sep 2005 03:27:35 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from michael@roq.com) Received: from p4.roq.com (ns1.ecoms.com [207.44.130.137]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5592D43D48 for ; Sat, 24 Sep 2005 03:27:34 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from michael@roq.com) Received: from p4.roq.com (localhost.roq.com [127.0.0.1]) by p4.roq.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8EE874C9B1; Sat, 24 Sep 2005 03:28:30 +0000 (GMT) Received: from [10.0.1.8] (ppp157-158.static.internode.on.net [150.101.157.158]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by p4.roq.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9F9704C97F; Sat, 24 Sep 2005 03:28:29 +0000 (GMT) Message-ID: <4334C7A3.9050108@roq.com> Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2005 13:27:31 +1000 From: Michael Vince User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD amd64; en-US; rv:1.7.11) Gecko/20050907 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: anon anon References: In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV using ClamSMTP Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: wireless card recommendation for laptop X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2005 03:27:35 -0000 I bought the Netgear WG511T because it said 'Atheros' on the box and it couldn't of worked out as a better card for me. It was my first time using wireless and I was setup on my newly setup wireless access point not much less then a minute on FreeBSD 6 with this card. I simply followed the instructions for the FreeBSD 6 wireless handbook and I was on. http://www.freebsdmall.com/~loader/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/wireless/article.html The only difference I did between what is said here is I loaded all the kernel drviers as modules only instead of compiling them into the kernel. I set it up using the latest WPA encryption mode and had it all automagicly working with DHCP as well using the ifconfig_ath0="DHCP WPA" setting in rc.conf Yeah the older WEP encryption worked for me as well but it didn't work using it via dhcp for some reason I have had to manually set it via ifconfig command and set a route.
