I tested the playback with my uaudio device and it works. So I went ahead and committed it without waiting for Julian's test of the mono-recording. If there's still a bug we can fix it in a follow-up commit. AC97 backward compatible support for ICH 6/7 (HDA with AC97 codec) also has been added. Support for Intel HDA (azalia) is not there yet, hopefully somewhere in near future. * Joystick for es137x (Jean-Yves Lefort) * Recording fixes for sb16 (Watanabe Kazuhiro) * Fix unhandled interrupt for via8233, causing erratic behaviour or panic in some cases. RELENG_5/RELENG_6: * Everything from -CURRENT Patches are available at http://people.freebsd.org/~ariff/ . Those who upgrading from previous patches should start with a clean kernel source, or simply do the reverse patching (patch -R < snd_PREVIOUS.diff). Trivia: * Part of these fix and changes will make its way into -CURRENT * Those who experiencing stuttering, crackling or jumpy playback should enable options PREEMPTION in kernel. Consider increasing default buffersize (hint.pcm..buffersize) as a last resort. * There is an unintended new feature call 'slave', which is to reduce playback contention. This is noticable for via8233 and skype users (with accute hearing). hint.pcm..via_dxs_disabled can be considered obsolete, although the hint option still there. NOTE: you can disable slave feature through sysctl hw.snd.slave_enabled. * For via8233, if you experiencing no sound at all, consider disabling either DXS or SGD channel: hint.pcm..via_dxs_channels=value from 0 - 4 hint.pcm..via_sgd_channels=value 0 - 1 Pick the best combination from of options. I'm on my way to revamp the entire mutex and locking strategy especially to accomodate an entirely new feature call sndctl(1). With sndctl(1), hopefully we can remove large part of sysctl tweakings, since that only available for super-world-class-geek-user. * For RELENG_5/6 user, you should copy src/sys/sys/soundcard.h to /usr/include/sys/soundcard.h so any newly compiled application (especially mplayer) can pick up the definition of 24/32bit sound format. You only need to do this if the entire update process is not part of build/installworld. -- Ariff Abdullah "ahli" MyBSD/FreeBSD http://www.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4) http://staff.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4) http://tomoyo.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4) From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Nov 14 11:02:31 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8E4CE16A41F for ; Mon, 14 Nov 2005 11:02:31 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4932143D45 for ; Mon, 14 Nov 2005 11:02:31 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id jAEB2VQT073772 for ; Mon, 14 Nov 2005 11:02:31 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id jAEB2UtJ073766 for freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org; Mon, 14 Nov 2005 11:02:30 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 14 Nov 2005 11:02:30 GMT Message-Id: <200511141102.jAEB2UtJ073766@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 14 Nov 2005 11:02:31 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems Serious problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. I have an external usb sound card "Creative Sound Blater Live 24! external". I am very new to FreeBSD, I have only experience with Linux. This card used to work with Linux by using "modprobe snd-usb-audio". I noticed that there is something similar in FreeBSD, i.e., "kldload snd_uaudio". By loading this module I got only the mixer device and could use the mixer, but no sound. Actualy, I have no device /dev/dsp (or something similar). Can anybody help? But the almost codes for USB sound in FreeBSD 5.4 are the codes before that. Almost our changes have already been applied to FreeBSD 5-stable (RELENG_5 branch) and 6.0. So I recommend updating your system to 5-stable or 6.0. Really? I can't remember this. But there's a patchset available at http://people.freebsd.org/~ariff/ which merges all of the changes we have in -current. If you know how to use "patch", you may want to give it a try. Notes: - I have a Creative USB device myself and it works just fine (in -current). - The patchset will not be merged to RELENG_5 or RELENG_6 as is, since we have to change the way you can control some features first. I It must be true. The version of uaudio.c in RELENG_5_4 is 1.7.8.1. This differs by only one line from uadio.c of 1.7. 1.7 uaudio.c is 3 years old. On the other hand, the version of uaudio.c in RELENG_5 (stable branch) is 1.7.8.2, and this differs by over 2,000 lines from in RELENG_5_4. uaudio_pcm.c and uaudio.h are slimiar to that. Yes, there are a lot of your changes MFCed, but it's not up-to-date. I searched through cvsweb for the fix which removed the allocation of DMAable buffers and uses plain malloc()ed buffers. I haven't found it at a first glance, but I don't think it's MFCed. And without this change the uaudio device will not attach. Ariff's patchset contains a backport of the current sound code and it is known to work. I guess I should give a try to re-sync everything. -- Ariff Abdullah MyBSD http://www.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4) http://staff.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4) http://tomoyo.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4) From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 15 10:25:43 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 212F316A41F for ; Tue, 15 Nov 2005 10:25:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from Alexander@Leidinger.net) Received: from www.ebusiness-leidinger.de (jojo.ms-net.de [84.16.236.246]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6BED743D46 for ; Tue, 15 Nov 2005 10:25:42 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from Alexander@Leidinger.net) Received: from Andro-Beta.Leidinger.net (p54A5FB73.dip.t-dialin.net [84.165.251.115]) (authenticated bits=0) by www.ebusiness-leidinger.de (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id jAFA26pv038918; Tue, 15 Nov 2005 11:02:06 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from Alexander@Leidinger.net) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by Andro-Beta.Leidinger.net (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id jAFAPaln079971; Tue, 15 Nov 2005 11:25:37 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from Alexander@Leidinger.net) Received: from pslux.cec.eu.int (pslux.cec.eu.int [158.169.9.14]) by netchild.homeip.net (Horde MIME library) with HTTP; Tue, 15 Nov 2005 11:25:36 +0100 Message-ID: <20051115112536.dckrt9xiucsk8ogg@netchild.homeip.net> X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005 11:25:36 +0100 From: Alexander Leidinger To: Ariff Abdullah References: <20051115.033104.343191587.kazuhito@ph.noda.tus.ac.jp> <20051114220333.223b7327@Magellan.Leidinger.net> <20051115.145037.343100681.kazuhito@ph.noda.tus.ac.jp> <20051115093824.40bq3a8j28s4cg4o@netchild.homeip.net> <20051115174218.6c7b7233.skywizard@MyBSD.org.my> In-Reply-To: <20051115174218.6c7b7233.skywizard@MyBSD.org.my> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format="flowed" Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit User-Agent: Internet Messaging Program (IMP) H3 (4.0.3) / FreeBSD-4.11 X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new Cc: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: external sound card under FreeBSD 5.4 X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005 10:25:43 -0000 Ariff Abdullah wrote: >> Ariff's patchset contains a backport of the current sound code and >> it is known to work. >> > Unfortunately I don't think I've ever touch uaudio code except the > addition of feeder_volume part. I have to admin I never looked at yout 5.x patchset, since I don't have any 5.x system with sound hardware (at least it's not used there). I was under the impression, that you backported all the changes... So what does your patchset contain, only your changes to the sound code, or changes which you where able to verify? > Since I do not have any usb audio hardware, I couldn't tell if blind > fold backporting is worth a try for me. DRI was enabled. I now replaced one of the monitors with a TFT and will replace the 2nd one end of the week with a TFT too. Since my AGP card only got 1 DVI port, I've to attach the 2nd TFT to the VGA port. I'm not sure how big the difference will be (1280*1024 res. 4m VGA cable). If it is to bad I'm thinking of purchasing a 2nd card (PCI) with a DVI-out. I'm unsure if I'll still have DRI then when I use xinerama with 2 devices or not? Right now my radeon is only one device inside xorg.conf. The system I had in very past was equiped with a Matrox G400-DH which had no support for DRI if xinerama was used.I'm using on both screens the same res. Does that still apply? In order to commit this change to tree I need more feedbacks from ICH[4-7] users as the patch changes fundamental operation procedures. (i.e. ignoring PCR bit while accessing codec.) It's also possible to introduce a new tunable to ignore PCR bit but I'd like to avoid adding additional one as possible as I can. -- Regards, Pyun YongHyeon From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Nov 17 22:31:35 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0DC3116A420 for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2005 22:31:35 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from frank@barda.agala.net) Received: from mail.agala.net (I8b01.i.pppool.de [85.73.139.1]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0CAD543D49 for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2005 22:31:30 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from frank@barda.agala.net) Received: from mail.agala.net (barda [192.168.20.1]) by barda.agala.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2243C119CD5 for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2005 23:31:32 +0100 (CET) Received: from abakus.agala.net (abakus.agala.net [192.168.223.2]) by mail.agala.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 44A0C119CC4 for ; Thu, 17 Nov 2005 23:31:31 +0100 (CET) From: "Frank J. It must support PAL and and should handle stereo sound. There seam to be different ways how the audio data gets into the PC. Most cards use a cable to the sound card. But that blocks the only line in input. Now I read that some cards send the audio data via the PCI bus to the bktr driver. That sound much more elegant. But which cards work thar way? And how does FreeBSD the that data. Does a second mixer appear? Works nice under linux and mac os X, but I can't get it completely working under FreeBSD. I'm using CURRENT of about week ago. I can get this device working as full-duplex with these settings: hw.snd.pcm0.vchans=2 hw.snd.pcm0.vchanrate=8000 now I'm able to do things like dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/dsp0.0 & dd if=/dev/dsp0.0 of=somefile bs=8000 & after that, somefile contains whatever I say in mic and muted noises of /dev/urandom being played through speaker. using /dev/dsp0.0 for input and /dev/dsp0.1 for output in one process produces nothing. Are there any patches or other tricks that I could test to make device working with, eg. ohphone?
