Then install FreeBSD. You can setup the whole partitioning in Windows if you like (creating one additionally primary partition for FreeBSD), or do it in FreeBSD. My son has an internet site supported by FreeBSD that uses MySQL. I have set up a FreeBSD version 5.3 system on my home network using an 80gb drive sliced and partitioned to the FreeBSD 5.3 defaults. I installed MySQL version 3.23 from the ports because that is the version on my son's server. I wanted to install a copy of his database that I had MySQL dump on his FreeBSD server and FTP'd it to my Windows PC and placed on a CD. After directing the .SQL dump back to a like named database on my newly installed box I originally received a message that I was out of disk space. I find that MySql is working in /var/db/mysql and that the default installation slice/partition of FreeBSD must be too small to handle the databases I want to play with. So I read up on the file system and thought I understood that one can graft another drive onto a mount point on the system to add space at the mount point. I purchased a 120gb drive for under $50 after rebates and partitioned it into one FreeBSD partition, (not dangerously dedicated). I expected, from what I read, that if I mounted it at the /var mount point everything in the original /var directory would become unreachable/invisible. I tried it and I got the results I expected. The reason I thought I would replace the entire /var directory was because if /var is too small for MySQL it would probably quickly be exposed to be too small for something else unexpected. I mounted the new drive 1 to a temporary mount point and used the cp command to copy each directory in /var to the drive. I looked in all the new/old directories at the temporary mount point using ls -F and everything appeared to be there at the file level. I used the umount command to unmount the new drive/partition from the temporary mount point and remounted it at /var. I opened MySQL and created the named database I wanted and again started to collect the data from the CD by directing the .SQL file data to my database. Again, just like it did originally, after several minutes of creating tables the system reported that it had run out of space. My surprise is that every indication I get after I regain control of the system is that the database tables are being built within the original /var directory structure rather than the 120gb drive mounted on the /var mountpoint. If I use the df command while drive 1 is mounted it shows that /var on disk 0 is full and /var on disk 1 just has whatever I copied onto the drive when it was mounted to a temporary mount point. Also by experimentation/confirmation I find that simply creating a couple of new databases within MySQL while drive 1 is mounted on /var shows that the databases have been created on the original /var on disk 0 as directories after disk 1 is unmounted. What am I doing wrong or what don't I understand about a drive being mounted on /var where data is being written underneath it to the original /var/db/mysql/mydatabasename on disk 0 rather than onto the mounted disk 1? I sysinstall usually gives /var its own partition when you install FreeBSD, so you probably already had something mounted on /var before you started moving things over. Try unmounting the thing that was previously mounted on /var before mounting the new disk; I'm not sure how mount deals with more than one filesystem mounted at the same place. If that doesn't work, send the output of ``df'' to the list after unmounting the old /var and mounting the new one. Oh, and don't forget to update /etc/fstab once you get everything working. > opened MySQL and created the named database I wanted and again started to > collect the data from the CD by directing the .SQL file data to my database. > Again, just like it did originally, after several minutes of creating tables > the system reported that it had run out of space. > > My surprise is that every indication I get after I regain control of the > system is that the database tables are being built within the original /var > directory structure rather than the 120gb drive mounted on the /var > mountpoint. First I must say that you should ask questions of a technical nature at FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG Read the FreeBSD-Newbies First Aid Kit at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html which explains what the newbies list is for. However, your question reminds me of a technique which I occasionally used some years ago from the excellent "The Complete FreeBSD" by Greg Lehey, which I'll describe below in case it helps. In those days the default layout had /var in the fairly small / partition and it was useful to move it to the much larger /usr partition like so: # mkdir /usr/var # cd /var # tar cf - . | (cd /usr/var; tar xf - ) # cd / # rm -rf /var # ln -s /usr/var /var I suggest you simply mount the new large partition at the temporary mount point you initially used and replace 'usr' above with the name of that mount point. You may find that you cant remove the old /var because /var/empty has the system immutable flag (schg) set, in which case: # chflags -RH noschg /var/empty and then rm it. Probably a good idea to set the schg flag on the new /var/empty. Use ls -lo to see if it's set. I was pleased to read your question as I'll soon be building a PC for experimenting with a MySQL database, and it highlighted the need for a larger /var than I would have created. Thanks :) -- John. The use of tar to move the data followed by the edit of fstab seems to be the secret to success. > Here is quick rundown on how you could achieve your goal: > 1) Mount the new disk at at /mnt with something like: # mount /dev/ad1s1a /mnt > 2) Copy everything from your original /var partition to the new one: # cd /var && tar cf - ./ | (cd /mnt && tar xvpf -) > 3) Edit /etc/fstab from something like: /dev/ad0s1e /var ufs defaults 1 2 to: /dev/ad1s1a /var ufs defaults 1 2 > 4) Unmount old partition from /var and mount new one at /var: # umount /var && mount /var Actually step #3 automatically took care of step #4 for me. Also, have you searched for a bug report at the web site? Might be that it's a known issue. I have this device on a desktop machine: [admin@archangel][~] $ kldstat && dmesg | grep pcm && cat /dev/sndstat Id Refs Address Size Name 1 17 0xc0400000 5dfd28 kernel 2 1 0xc09e0000 3254 splash_bmp.ko 3 1 0xc09f4000 5844 snd_ich.ko 4 2 0xc09fa000 1d4fc sound.ko 5 1 0xc0a18000 9b70 sis.ko 6 14 0xc0a22000 537f0 acpi.ko pcm0: port 0xe400-0xe47f,0xe000-0xe0ff irq 18 at device 2.7 on pci0 pcm0: FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Installed devices: pcm0: at io 0xe000, 0xe400 irq 18 bufsz 16384 kld snd_ich (1p/1r/0v channels duplex default) ...and it works quite well. So I'd suspect something's up with cbb et al, but I can't say. What pcmcia bridge do you have? Try the manpages for cbb, pccbb, and cardbus, and compare with your dmesg output. Maybe the ECS mainboard has an unsupported PCMCIA controller or something.... If no one on questions@ can help, you might even try "hackers@", as real knowledgeable people (namely, the developers) are there often; however, I would advise you to try "questions@freebsd.org" first, and then "hackers@" only after waiting a few days without a response at questions, and with some indication that you've done more research on the problem. I think they'd be happy to help if they can, but we can't all go running to the designers with every little thing, eh? I would only add to them: Backup all important config files beforehand (Kernel Config, /etc/passwd, httpd.conf, etc.) if you do anything wrong (like pressing the wrong key in mergemaster) it is so much more comfortable to have backups. I am using FreeBSD 5.3, an HP940c Deskjet, parallel port connection, and the "lpr" method of printing (rather than the "CUPS" method). Initially I followed the instructions in the book, and was able to get some garbled output to come out of my printer. Then I installed apsfilter, which enabled some perfect printouts from Firefox. The apsfilter install created a new print queue that I had to tweak to make them compatible with the methodology I learned from the book. I never got the "text" and "postscript" filters documented in the book to work, but apsfilter works fine - so I'm using that. The sequence I followed is probably not ideal, but this is roughly what I did: 1. Make sure FreeBSD can see my printer: dmesg | grep lp lpt0: on ppbus0 lpt0: Interrupt-driven port lpt0: switched to polled standard mode 2. Enable printer in with: lptcontrol -p -d /dev/lpt0 3. Make sure printer is able to print: lptest > /dev/lpt0 4. Add enable command to /etc/rc.local ( I had to create /etc/rc.local, so I guessed I need to make it executable with: chmod 550 /etc/rc.local ) 5. Create printer spool directory mkdir /var/spool/lpd 6. Build apsfilter: cd /usr/ports/print/apsfilter make install clean rehash 7. Configure apsfilter: cd /usr/local/apsfilter ./SETUP 8. Make spool directory accessible by daemon group: chown daemon:daemon /var/spool/lpd/hp940 chmod 770 /var/spool/lpd/hp940 9. Add "ps" and "lp" aliases to the apsfilter-created entry in /etc/printcap: # APS1_BEGIN:printer1 # - don't delete start label for apsfilter printer1 # - no other printer defines between BEGIN and END LABEL ps|lp|hp940|ijs/DESKJET_940;r=300x300;q=medium;c=full;p=letter;m=auto:\ :lp=/dev/lpt0:\ :if=/usr/local/etc/apsfilter/basedir/bin/apsfilter:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/hp940:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/hp940/log:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/hp940/acct:\ :mx#0:\ :sh: # APS1_END - don't delete this 10. Enable lpd daemon in /etc/rc.conf by adding: lpd_enable="YES" 11. Reboot 12. Manage print jobs list print job = "lpq -P hp940" remove print job = "lprm #" (#=jobnumber) cancel all jobs = "lprm -" I have tested Firefox and Abiword, the two programs I will be printing from - and they both seem to work when I print to the "default postscript" printer. Any suggestions or fixes to these instructions are encouraged. I am really new to Unix and FreeBSD, so please forgive any bad advice contained above. The real grunt work in your scenario is being done by ghostscript, which is converting the incoming postscript that apsfilter is massaging, into the language that HP Deskjets understand. Using Ghostscript in this way works great if Ghostscript happens to support your printer model (which it does) Ghostscript tends to support a lot of HP deskjet models. The apsfilter port installed ghostscript for you. For people that don't have a model of printer supported by Ghostscript, you can configure Ghostscript to pump out "ijs" format, then pump this into the program ijsgimpprint which puts it into gimp-print. Gimpprint http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/ has support for a whole lot more printers. It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member. However I have always used the handbook online to get the job done and it's always worked. I don't recall having to crate any new directories in the process though, but it has been a while since I went through the process. Also have not used apsfilter, in the 4.x series I used magicfilter, and since moving up to the 5.x release I have been using CUPS. I have an old HP DJ500 and I think that thing is supported by tin cans and string. But all of this is just smoke in the wind, what matters is that you got printing working and it does what you want/need it to do. To this I say good job, and you may be a noobie to FreeBSD/Unix, but you are ready. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have. I guess what matters is "tools, not policy", and having those sheets print off in perfect black or in beautiful color. I sometimes think people are scared off from apsfilter because it's in the handbook under "Advanced Printing" (IIRC). While what it does is rather advanced, I don't know that setting it up is so difficult, as long as you read the docs. And it gives good results! Thanks, bsdnooby, for your "how to" list. Now, be sure and find Andreas a real nice postcard, and have fun with apsfilter!
