Now the big question is how do these 2 Lynx boxes differ? Actually, the two machines might be identical and the *only* difference is the type of CDR media being used. Older CDROM drives do not play well with a lot CDR media (depending on process type and dye color) because it has a lower reflectance than "Mastered" CDROM discs. There is a work around; there is a CRD media called "Diamond DISC" or "Diamond Media" which has superior reflectance -looks exactly like a "Mastered" CDROM. I've had "Diamond Media" work in nearly every ancient drive I've tried, even when the manufacturer *officially* states that CRD is not supported and even in drives that predate the creation CRD by many years. Correct, I share that experience. I still can't get the FBSD 6.0 mini ISO to boot on my 500AU, regardless of which drive I try (I've tried 3, 2 of them being writers, 1 of them a modern DVD-RW/CD-RW). The NetBSD 3.0 installer boots just fine Could it be that the 6.0 bootloader is incompatible with whatever release of the SRM firmware I have, or that the kernel is too big to load? NetBSD was burnt using the same type of media as FreeBSD was, and I tried burning the FreeBSD installer multiple times on multiple OSes using multiple different pieces of software.
