The article describes how to use pxeboot for network booting, both for jumpstart installation and diskless clients. I found that the existing articles, pxe and diskless-x are either outdated, lacks important details or both (at least I needed more details). Since jumpstart and diskless shares a lot on the server side, I thought it appropriate to cover both in the same article. There are some sections that I am still working on (the diskless stuff), but I think that the article is mature enough to be useful, and I would appreciate if anyone have time to look and comment on it. To read the latest build, check http://www.daemonsecurity.com/pub/pxeboot/ To download the sgml source, check http://www.daemonsecurity.com/pub/pxeboot.tar.gz This is my first article I've written for FreeBSD and the first in docbook, so there are likely some errors. In particular I've had the problem that &man.command.X; gives an error, and without the -tag it's not typeset as commands. Also, no link the man-page is created. Also, I think there are inconsistencies in my use of , and as well as when to specify absolute paths or just the filename will suffice. I appreciate any comments or corrections. A work-in-progress patch can be found at: http://people.allbsd.org/~hrs/FreeBSD/www_cleanup-20060716.tar.gz and the changes attached at the end of this email. Basically it is for improving consistency and maintainability of our SGML and XML docs, and does not involve almost no content change. Comments? While I am still working on this including necessary changes for translation, I would like your comments on my basic idea if you have. This is a big sweeping change, so I will send the ready-to-commit patch set again before the actual commit. Thanks. -- | Hiroki SATO (from README in the tarball) - Add "make lint" for validating XML files in $XMLDOCS. - Restructure various include files: * lang/includes.nav*.sgml --> share/sgml/navibar.ent To activate the side navigation bar, we need the following line only in the DOCTYPE declaration now: Actually FOO is replaced with "about", "community", "developers", and so on. * includes.sgml in various location --> share/sgml/common.ent Scattered includes.sgml have been integrated. Please do not add this sort of files anymore. It makes maintenance and translation very difficult. - Switch to custom DTDs Now we use "-//FreeBSD//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional-Based Extension" for HTML docs, which is HTML 4.01 + some entities previously pulled via " %includes;" line. The location of entity file will be resolved by using catalog file. Also, DTDs for XML databases and XSLT stylesheets have been added. These DTDs makes the following possible: * Removal of {$foo} and &foo; pairs which have duplicate information Most of developers believe &foo; cannot be used in an XML file, and should be used in XSLT, but it is a wrong idea. A lot of duplicated {$foo} have been removed since &foo; can be used even when in an XML file now. * &#nnn; v.s. &symbolic; We can now use &symbolic; like á even in an XML file. This should improve the maintainability and useful for Latin characters. Please make sure that textproc/xmlcharent is installed in your system before trying. I will add it to the dependency of the docproj port. Probably most of numeric references should be replaced if there is no specific reason. - commercial/*.xml handling The *.xsl files have been rewritten and unified. It uses a new element in the XML databases, and @continent of is deprecated. I think the *.xml and the new xsl file should be in share/sgml, and I will implement partial translation like newsflash into it, too. - events/*.xml handling curdate.xml has been removed and exslt:date extension is used instead. events.dtd has been moved to share/sgml. - news/* Automatic replace of $base in news.xml has been removed because we can now use &base; straightforward. There is still room for improvement; more reuse of XML stylesheet, database unification, and so on. - gnome/*, platforms/ia64 Similar changes to news/* has been applied, but probably the news.xml can be integrated into news/news.xml and stylesheets in news/ can be reused. I am still working on such cleanups. ----Security_Multipart(Sun_Jul_16_20_48_10_2006_626)-- Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBEuid6TyzT2CeTzy0RAgN9AKC7uWaGTrfntJ7+8j3zfxpblUFcYQCeIixK 7KS8DFfRwkded8Al1hfbXYo= =wtRg -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ----Security_Multipart(Sun_Jul_16_20_48_10_2006_626)---- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jul 16 14:10:12 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 35C9316A4DA; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 14:10:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from delphij@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D123943D45; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 14:10:11 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from delphij@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (delphij@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k6GEABnj054583; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 14:10:11 GMT (envelope-from delphij@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from delphij@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k6GEABDk054579; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 14:10:11 GMT (envelope-from delphij) Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2006 14:10:11 GMT From: Xin LI Message-Id: <200607161410.k6GEABDk054579@freefall.freebsd.org> To: delphij@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org, delphij@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: docs/100334: [PATCH] zh_CN: Correct th last part of FPI(should be ISO 639 language code) X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2006 14:10:12 -0000 Synopsis: [PATCH] zh_CN: Correct th last part of FPI(should be ISO 639 language code) Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-doc->delphij Responsible-Changed-By: delphij Responsible-Changed-When: Sun Jul 16 14:09:44 UTC 2006 Responsible-Changed-Why: Take http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=100334 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jul 16 14:21:33 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4D68A16A4DD; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 14:21:33 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gabor@FreeBSD.org) Received: from server.t-hosting.hu (server.t-hosting.hu [217.20.133.7]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C22DB43D46; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 14:21:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gabor@FreeBSD.org) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by server.t-hosting.hu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 983B099AEF8; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 16:21:27 +0200 (CEST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at t-hosting.hu Received: from server.t-hosting.hu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (server.t-hosting.hu [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id ZXkGs51x3DLC; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 16:21:19 +0200 (CEST) Received: from [192.168.2.186] (catv-50635cb6.catv.broadband.hu [80.99.92.182]) by server.t-hosting.hu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1795099AEE8; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 16:21:19 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <44BA4B57.7060602@FreeBSD.org> Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2006 16:21:11 +0200 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?G=E1bor_K=F6vesd=E1n?= User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 (Windows/20060516) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Hiroki Sato References: <20060716.204810.57466384.hrs@allbsd.org> In-Reply-To: <20060716.204810.57466384.hrs@allbsd.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: doc@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: www/ cleanup patch X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: gabor@t-hosting.hu List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2006 14:21:33 -0000 Hiroki Sato wrote: > Hi all, > > I am working on unifying of duplicated information between doc/www > or SGML/XML such as developers.sgml, but upon doing the work > I notice that we need some cleanups of the build infrastructure. > > A work-in-progress patch can be found at: > > http://people.allbsd.org/~hrs/FreeBSD/www_cleanup-20060716.tar.gz > > and the changes attached at the end of this email. Since some translations have very limited human resources, translated news is hard to keep up-to-date. The Hungarian translation will be such thing, since only I am working on that, and we don't even have a Hungarian committer. I looked at the French codebase, they just take the English xml from the Makefile: newsflash.html: newsflash.xsl news.xml\ includes.xsl ${XML_INCLUDES} ${XSLTPROC} ${XSLTPROCOPTS} -o ${.TARGET} \ --param "news.project.xml-master" "'${XML_NEWS_NEWS_MASTER}'" \ --param "news.project.xml" "'${XML_NEWS_NEWS}'" \ --param "transtable.xml" "'${XML_TRANSTABLE}'" \ ${.CURDIR}/newsflash.xsl ${.CURDIR}/news.xml Accordingly, the French webpages have to be rebuilt always when somebody commits some news to www/en to be up-to-date. Do you have any idea how this can be done better? -- Cheers, Gabor From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jul 16 15:10:40 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1027916A4E5; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 15:10:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from hrs@FreeBSD.org) Received: from mail.allbsd.org (vlsi00.si.noda.tus.ac.jp [133.31.130.32]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 86F5F43D45; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 15:10:39 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from hrs@FreeBSD.org) Received: from delta.allbsd.org (p2001-ipbf502funabasi.chiba.ocn.ne.jp [124.100.41.1]) (authenticated bits=128) by mail.allbsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k6GFAPTF051333; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 00:10:37 +0900 (JST) (envelope-from hrs@FreeBSD.org) Received: from localhost (alph.allbsd.org [192.168.0.10]) by delta.allbsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k6GF9nrc074159; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 00:09:49 +0900 (JST) (envelope-from hrs@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2006 00:09:23 +0900 (JST) Message-Id: <20060717.000923.51679886.hrs@allbsd.org> To: gabor@t-hosting.hu, gabor@FreeBSD.org From: Hiroki Sato In-Reply-To: <44BA4B57.7060602@FreeBSD.org> References: <20060716.204810.57466384.hrs@allbsd.org> <44BA4B57.7060602@FreeBSD.org> X-PGPkey-fingerprint: BDB3 443F A5DD B3D0 A530 FFD7 4F2C D3D8 2793 CF2D X-Mailer: Mew version 4.2.52 on Emacs 21.3 / Mule 5.0 (SAKAKI) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Multipart/Signed; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; micalg=pgp-sha1; boundary="--Security_Multipart(Mon_Jul_17_00_09_23_2006_307)--" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 0.88.2, clamav-milter version 0.88.2 on gatekeeper.allbsd.org X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: doc@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: www/ cleanup patch X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2006 15:10:40 -0000 ----Security_Multipart(Mon_Jul_17_00_09_23_2006_307)-- Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable G=E1bor K=F6vesd=E1n wrote in <44BA4B57.7060602@FreeBSD.org>: ga> Hiroki Sato wrote: ga> > To activate the side navigation bar, we need the following li= ne ga> > only in the DOCTYPE declaration now: ga> > ga> > ga> > ga> > Actually FOO is replaced with "about", "community", "develope= rs", ga> > and so on. ga> > = ga> This is a great idea, but how this applies to translations? Do they= = ga> still need a bunch of custom include files or can we add files like= = ga> navibar.lang.ent to share/sgml? Simply putting the localized navibar.ent into www//share/sgml/navibar.l10n.ent will do the trick. No change is needed for each *.sgml/*.xml file. Definitions in that file overrides the English ones; this means that entities both in www//share/sgml/navibar.l10n.ent and in www/share/sgml/navibar.ent are always used but ones in the former are preferentially used when they exist on per-entity basis. ga> For these tree sections, is there a good way to use the English xml= = ga> files in translations? Do you have any idea = how = ga> this can be done better? This Makefile does not mean the French webpages use the English versio= n of news.xml. The reason why the English news items are used is that changes for picking up partial translation were committed in 2004 (see= www/share/sgml/includes.misc.xsl rev.1.14 and other related changes). More specifically, if a translated entry exists in www//news/new= s.xml, it will be used. If not, the English entry will be used. This selection will be done automatically and no need to have duplicat= ed copy of the English entries in the localized news.xml. So what you have to do is putting a translated news.xml file into www//news/news.xml. Note that the translated news.xml needs to contain translated part only. Items which are not translated yet will be inserted into newsflash.html and so on when the English version is updated (after rebuilding the localized tree, of course). -- = | Hiroki SATO ----Security_Multipart(Mon_Jul_17_00_09_23_2006_307)-- Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBEulajTyzT2CeTzy0RAlZgAJ9cju/tvrmn0GrxInGW1oNb4oeGMACfdalb +LLiVftF6TY4+xdMZRtxqSo= =4/yu -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ----Security_Multipart(Mon_Jul_17_00_09_23_2006_307)---- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jul 17 02:08:24 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1C81D16A4DD for ; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 02:08:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ablake@mac.com) Received: from smtpout.mac.com (smtpout.mac.com [17.250.248.171]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D7A1D43D46 for ; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 02:08:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ablake@mac.com) Received: from mac.com (smtpin08-en2 [10.13.10.153]) by smtpout.mac.com (Xserve/8.12.11/smtpout01/MantshX 4.0) with ESMTP id k6H28NoJ015161 for ; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 19:08:23 -0700 (PDT) Received: from [192.168.101.21] (adsl-69-108-67-159.dsl.irvnca.pacbell.net [69.108.67.159]) (authenticated bits=0) by mac.com (Xserve/smtpin08/MantshX 4.0) with ESMTP id k6H28Lut029178 for ; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 19:08:22 -0700 (PDT) Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v752.2) Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed To: doc@FreeBSD.org From: Adam Michalak Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2006 19:08:15 -0700 X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.752.2) Cc: Subject: regarding http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ipsec.html X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2006 02:08:24 -0000 Some of this page is now out-of-date. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. Please, could you send some info about you, too? Thanks. For example, the Czech translation: - There is a local Czech web translation on http://www.FreeBSD.cz/cs/, or http://www.FreeBSD.cz/, where preferred Czech or Slovak language is automatically redirected to Czech pages. - It is just partial translation, where find www/cs -name "*.xml" -o -name "*.sgml" reports 97 files. However, on the other side, it is carefully maintained for very long time (currently about 6 years now). - Currently I'm the only maintainer of Czech translation. - There is nothing translated from doc tree. - Over the time, we have developed local translation method, where almost any of work except for a translation itself is automatized: We have all files in a local CVS repository. Every day morning, there is posted a mail, where is a list of all files, which have to be modified, deleted, and/or added. It is done by comparing local translation tree with original English tree. For example, today I received mail with several changes accumulated over several days: upd www/cs/news/press.xml 1.201 => 1.203 upd www/cs/platforms/alpha.sgml 1.4 => 1.5 upd www/cs/platforms/xbox.sgml 1.4 => 1.5 upd www/cs/releng/index.sgml 1.185 => 1.186 upd www/cs/share/sgml/usergroups.xml 1#1.33 => 1.35 upd www/en/news/press.xml 1.201 => 1.203 upd www/share/sgml/usergroups.xml 1.33 => 1.35 del ... add ... Then I copy and paste "upd file version" line into terminal window with added "x" before "upd", which starts an editor with two windows: One with local translated file, the second with a diff between older English revision and newest English revision. When there are several changes in one file (like press.xml 1.201 -> 1.203), I can go in arbitrary number of revisions per one step. This is good, when one change is for example just very big white space, and the second is something completely different. Command "upd" is a subset of "xupd", it just displays the diff, so I can be shocked about the changes before I go to translation work :o) Currently, it does not work just for direct dependencies like www/en/platforms/xbox.sgml -> www/cs/platforms/xbox.sgml, but it does work for all other dependencies, which can be simply mentioned in local translation file, like I have specified, that www/cs/share/sgml/usergroups.xml is dependent on www/share/sgml/usergroups.xml. And this is my technique for maintaining the Czech translation. Regards. PS: I think that better is to reply to me personally, then I can send here some summary, or create some article and/or web page. -- Rudolf Cejka http://www.fit.vutbr.cz/~cejkar Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Information Technology Bozetechova 2, 612 66 Brno, Czech Republic From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 18 12:16:07 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D017B16A4DD for ; Tue, 18 Jul 2006 12:16:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ifed0000@sauce.pntic.mec.es) Received: from correo-3.pntic.mec.es (correo-3.pntic.mec.es [195.53.123.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D86E643D45 for ; Tue, 18 Jul 2006 12:16:06 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ifed0000@sauce.pntic.mec.es) Received: by correo-3.pntic.mec.es (Postfix, from userid 502) id CCC688FC3B; Tue, 18 Jul 2006 14:16:04 +0200 (CEST) Received: from ALFONSO01 (117.Red-213-96-98.staticIP.rima-tde.net [213.96.98.117]) by correo-3.pntic.mec.es (Postfix) with ESMTP id D2DB78FC36 for ; Tue, 18 Jul 2006 14:16:03 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <000f01c6aa63$f5905940$2301a8c0@ALFONSO01> From: "ALFONSO (CASA)" To: Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2006 14:16:11 +0200 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2869 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2869 X-PostfixSecure-Antispam: valid X-Mailman-Approved-At: Tue, 18 Jul 2006 12:26:47 +0000 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Cc: Subject: PROBLEM WITH THE INSTALLATION X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2006 12:16:07 -0000 Hi, I am trying to install freebsd 6.1 in a Fujitsu Siemens Server RX 220 = and when the installation has started, in the screen appears an error = and It is impossible to continue?
