This would be a nice goal, but all the bits of tapioca have not been released yet. One would have to fish through svn and darcs to get the components. This isn't to say it couldn't be done now, it would just be much easier to support if all of the components had releases. Following these steps will have interesting effects on the plist, so don't expect good packages, or clean uninstallations. Additionally, don't expect full GNOME functionality. HAL is so ingrained in GNOME now, there will be some things that just don't work without it. Restarting the daemon via /usr/local/etc/rc.d/hald settled the system back down to nearly 99% idle again. I saw this behavior once recently while I had the notebook in to upgrade Gnome from 2.16.x to 2.18. My best guess is that hald started to eat up CPU time when a umass(4) device was "unmounted" from the system via Nautilus, though I can't be certain. Since this is likely to happen again, what kind of information should we be looking for to help diagnose why hald is going berserk like this (particularly since we probably won't notice that hald is out-of-control until some time after it's started to misbehave) ? The best thing to do is rebuild hal with debugging symbols, then when it starts to misbehave, connect gdb to the running hald process. That will interrupt the process, and you can get a backtrace. From there, continue for a few seconds, and get another backtrace (or simply step through the execution). Thanks for trying to reproduce this problem. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a problem with my setup, however since it seemed I was the seond person to have this problem I thought I would chime in. > Try rebuilding libgnomeprint and gtk20 will WITH_CUPS="yes" > in /etc/make.conf, and see if it helps. > > Joe I already had WITH_CUPS="yes" in my /etc/make.conf. The contents of the file are as below. # I guess some ports use this ... #WITH_DEBUG=yes WANT_FAM_SYSTEM=gamin CFLAGS= -O -g -pipe STRIP= NO_PROFILE=true BATCH=yes # cups related CUPS_OVERWRITE_BASE=yes NO_LPR=true WITH_CUPS=yes WITH_GTK=yes WITH_SMB=yes # added by use.perl 2007-03-30 17:12:45 PERL_VER=5.8.8 PERL_VERSION=5.8.8 Perhaps there is something else incorrect here? My /etc/rc.conf contains the following: # GNOME gnome_enable="YES" dbus_enable="YES" polkitd_enable="YES" hald_enable="YES" cupsd_enable="YES" Other notes: 1) I can sucessfully print a test page from the CUPS web interface ( http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:631/ ) 2) I can successfully print from Openoffice, including choosing printer and paper type (A3,A4 etc) This leads me to believe the CUPS setup itself is not the problem. 3) I cannot print a test page from the Gnome cups manager because it sets the paper to Letter size (when sending a document to the printer, and the option to change paper size is blank (we use A4 in Japan and there is no Letter size in the printer. There is however A3 size available in the printer). The PPD file has the defaults set to A4 and nowhere mentions Letter size. In fact, I can't choose the paper size from any Gnome application except Openoffice. 4) I have no problem with print preview 5) I have this problem with a newly created user as well 6) Interestingly enough, in Evolution choosing a CUPS printer leads to the print button being blanked out, and therefore I can't directly choose those printers. At least it doesn't freeze ... If you can't repoduce the problem then I guess it just a problem with my setup somewhere, because Gnome and CUPS has always been a problem area for me. If you unload the PPD, does printing work? I moved all my PPD files away to a temporary directory and rebooted. When I did that, all printers were found and I could choose and press the print button ok. Furthermore, I could select the paper size as well. So that seems to have solved the freeze problem for me. Thanks! However, one small problem remains. The paper size is still stuck in Letter size. The file goes to the correct printer, but on the printer monitor it complains about being sent a Letter size file and there being no Letter paper in printer. Running gedit from the command line I get the following error messages: > gedit GnomePrintCupsPlugin-Message: The ppd file for the CUPS printer FUJI_XEROX_ApeosPort_C5540_I_v_7._8._0_-_Printer_xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx could not be loaded. In fact, I can't choose the paper size > > from any Gnome application except Openoffice. Me too. You would think that being able to set the paper size would be easy to do from Gnome, but no... I sometimes have the reverse problem: the ppd assumes A4, and I have letter only. That freezes the printer. I played around with the paper settings and it seems that if I manually set the paper size to A4 (I though I did that before...), I can now print in A4 as expected. So my problems are solved! ;-) To summarize, moving away the PPD files from the locations I had them in (/usr/local/etc/cups/ppd/ and /usr/local/share/cups/model/) fixed the printer freezing problem for me. Going in to cairo's port manually, and only typing in make still results in it using WITHOUT_X11. I had to manually edit the Makefile and take that IF out for it to compile properly. This is going to break a lot lot of ports. We will have to do it step by step to fix the plist, remove hacks, make it works in runtime and etc on each ports. If you want to help to test and create patches, please feel free to do and we will add in MC ports tree. This share/gnome/ -> share/ is a last thing to do a big change in GNOME ports. It will be coming with GNOME 2.20 at the same time. However, after all of this big change and we should have better long time run for our ports by have less hacks/patches. Works here. Make sure you select the UK layout prior to opening your application. For example, if you open a terminal window while in the USA layout, then change your layout to UK, that terminal window will maintain the USA layout. Open a new window to get the new UK layout.
