I can confirm that RC2 (6.2-RC2-powerpc-disc1.iso) boots froms Open Firmware on my PowerMac G4. (Booting with the 'C* key results in a hang after the two KDB lines are prited on the screen). Thanks to everyone involved for the great work! This machine has been been broken (read: FreeBSd not working) for a long time, see my work log here: http://tingox.googlepages.com/powermac_g4_freebsd But the last time it ran, it was with the 7.0 snapshot from 20051105. Difficult to say. 20051105 was around 6.0-RELEASE. The 6-STABLE branch was created in July 2005, so there were 4 months worth of changes in -CURRENT between the 6-STABLE branchpoint and the snapshot you run. So, it is possible that your 7-CURRENT has ABI incompatibilities with 6-STABLE, in which case a binary "upgrade" from 7-CURRENT to 6.2-RELEASE may not be trivial. However, given that your 7-CURRENT is around the time of 6.0-RELEASE and given that we try not to make big sweeping changes before the release is out on the "parent" branch, chances are that no major ABI incompatibilities were introduced yet. -- Marcel Moolenaar xcllnt@mac.com From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 14 20:00:41 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 82AE516A417 for ; Sun, 14 Jan 2007 20:00:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no) Received: from osl1smout1.broadpark.no (osl1smout1.broadpark.no [80.202.4.58]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 431CB13C455 for ; Sun, 14 Jan 2007 20:00:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no) Received: from osl1sminn1.broadpark.no ([80.202.4.59]) by osl1smout1.broadpark.no (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.1 HotFix 0.05 (built Oct 21 2004)) with ESMTP id <0JBV00MWAJL4U0E0@osl1smout1.broadpark.no> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Sun, 14 Jan 2007 21:00:40 +0100 (CET) Received: from kg-work.kg4.no ([80.203.66.169]) by osl1sminn1.broadpark.no (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.1 HotFix 0.05 (built Oct 21 2004)) with SMTP id <0JBV0077VJL3IHH1@osl1sminn1.broadpark.no> for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Sun, 14 Jan 2007 21:00:40 +0100 (CET) Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2007 21:00:38 +0100 From: Torfinn Ingolfsen X-Face: "t9w2,-X@O^I`jVW\sonI3.,36KBLZE*AL[y9lL[PyFD*r_S:dIL9c[8Y>V42R0"!"yb_zN,f#%.[PYYNq; m"_0v; ~rUM2Yy!zmkh)3&U|u!=T(zyv,MHJv"nDH>OJ`t(@mil461d_B'Uo|'nMwlKe0Mv=kvV?Nh@>Hb<3s_z2jYgZhPb@?Wi^x1a~Hplz1.zH In-reply-to: <44F4EA3F.8020706@freebsd.org> To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Message-id: <20070114210038.de993eb7.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> MIME-version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Sylpheed 2.3.0 (GTK+ 2.10.7; i386-portbld-freebsd6.2) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT References: <20060829110905.5443d020.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> <44F4EA3F.8020706@freebsd.org> Subject: Re: hw.model is empty? Probably someone of ppc people can comment this... It looks like libpthread uses sybmol not defined in libc. You can, however edit port's Makefile to make it not compilile libpthread in as temporary solution. PS: i've recently received apple g3 imac, so I'll probably be able to help you further soon. Good to see activity on this project. I am currently investigating with a friend what platform to use for embedded systems - we saw the standard x86 clones but it would be more fun to use an "exotic" architecture and we were impressed by the Efika (2W for a 400MHz processor is a real achievement). Our dream is to go to a local FreeBSD conference (we are based in Chile) and run the presentation on this board - surely a long way to go... I just joined the freebsd-ppc list to learn more about this platform - I saw some posts in the Jan. 2007 archive, what motivated me to join. We would be interested in getting some hardware to help the project. How can we get 1 or 2 boards? I will be in France for a few weeks in February if it helps. Currently FreeBSD doesn't get very far through the boot process on an EFIKA. I am working on tracking down why it is causing a panic early on however I have been busy with other commitments so this may take some time. If you do get an EFIKA it will still require work to port FreeBSD to. When I have time I will look at a patch sent to the NetBSD list regarding the way it calls OpenFirmware. The problem is the equivalent code in FreeBSD is written in C. Is this the patch you mean ? : http://mail-index.netbsd.org/port-ofppc/2007/01/07/0000.html If so, then OpenFirmware on the EFIKA is running in real mode. The current FreeBSD implementation expects OpenFirmware to be running in virtual mode, and there are cases where data is passed on a stack that is virtually mapped. I haven't done anything other than this: - installing FreeBSD - upgrading FreeBSD (binary upgrade) - installing ports Let's have a look: root@kg-g4# ll /usr/lib/libpth* -r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 300312 Jan 7 12:28 /usr/lib/libpthread.a lrwxrwxrwx 1 root wheel 20 Jan 14 22:22 /usr/lib/libpthread.so@ -> /lib/libpthread.so.2 -r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 144876 Nov 5 2005 /usr/lib/libpthread.so.2 -r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 324420 Jul 31 16:07 /usr/lib/libpthread_p.a root@kg-g4# pkg_info -W /usr/lib/libpthread.so.2 (no outpu) Hmm, perhaps this file (/usr/lib/libpthread.so.2) wasn't upgraded? It looks like that to me, since the new library is in /lib, and there is only a symlink to it in /usr/lib. I haven't seen any "moves" announced on any of the mailing lists I read, but I don't follow -current, so who knows. -- Torfinn From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 20 15:00:09 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: powerpc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EFC8E16A402; Sat, 20 Jan 2007 15:00:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smarthost2.sentex.ca (smarthost2.sentex.ca [205.211.164.50]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 87AC913C442; Sat, 20 Jan 2007 15:00:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp1.sentex.ca (smtp1.sentex.ca [199.212.134.4]) by smarthost2.sentex.ca (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id l0KExu9O001039; Sat, 20 Jan 2007 09:59:57 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from freebsd-current.sentex.ca (freebsd-current.sentex.ca [64.7.128.98]) by smtp1.sentex.ca (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id l0KExuYE085725; Sat, 20 Jan 2007 09:59:56 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: by freebsd-current.sentex.ca (Postfix, from userid 666) id 929E873034; Sat, 20 Jan 2007 09:59:56 -0500 (EST) Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Precedence: bulk Message-Id: <20070120145956.929E873034@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2007 09:59:56 -0500 (EST) X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version devel-20070102, clamav-milter version devel-111206 on clamscanner3 X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on powerpc/powerpc X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2007 15:00:09 -0000 TB --- 2007-01-20 13:46:48 -
