I think it may be better to post it here. I have a system running i386 7-CURRENT as of today. An external raid connected to a Adaptec 29160, but it is only running at 6.6MB/s. relevant dmesg are: ahc0: port 0x2500-0x25ff mem 0xfbfdf000-0xfbfdffff irq 18 at device 2.0 on pci1 ahc0: [ITHREAD] (probe2:ahc0:0:0:0): inquiry data fails comparison at DV1 step (probe2:ahc0:0:0:0): inquiry data fails comparison at DV1 step (probe2:ahc0:0:0:0): inquiry data fails comparison at DV1 step (probe2:ahc0:0:0:0): inquiry data fails comparison at DV1 step (probe2:ahc0:0:0:0): inquiry data fails comparison at DV1 step da2 at ahc0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0 da2: Fixed Direct Access SCSI-4 device da2: 6.600MB/s transfers (16bit) da2: Command Queueing Enabled da2: 915737MB (1875429888 512 byte sectors: 255H 63S/T 116740C) This card and the raid box work perfectly with 6-STABLE. I heard from Scott that making DV work is really tricky and not that easy. I would like to help to test any patches. Or is there any workaround to this problem? I just found out that there's a scsi-specific ML and perhaps I'll now find the answer to the question which u320-pci-x scsi controller is recommended for use with freebsd (6.2). I read some drivers (amr, cis, mpt, iir), but I'm still not sure which card would do best with freebsd. I have a adaptec 39320 lying on my desk, but the system (dell sc1425) freez= es under heavy load [0]. I am using this script [1] to get it freezing, although it does _NOT_ work all the time. As our aim is to get the server fast up and running again we decided to try another scsi controller, but the big question is: Which one? Not really, but I stopped experiencing this king of panics. At least, I stopped experiencing them so often. This seemed to happen after I upgraded to the latest 6.2 patchset, enabled DDB, DEBUG_LOCKS, DEBUG_VFS_LOCKS, DIAGNOSTIC, and so on. Lots of LOR and other strangeitudes will show up, but they seem to be mostly harmless. I've still everything configured to try and get some useful dump in case it happens again. BTW, on another machine today I had a crash and started getting panics on each reboot until I jumped in in single user mode and issued an "fsck -y" on a corrupted filesystem; you may want to check. bye av. Ok, will try that, too. Though this will be only possible on our secondary machine. I've had a look into src/sys/dev/aac/* and it looks like there are no changes since freebsd-6.2-release. > I've still everything configured to try and get some useful dump in case= =20 > it happens again. Here it happens quite often, if I run the testdisks.sh shellscript that does heavy i/o. > BTW, on another machine today I had a crash and started getting panics=20 > on each reboot until I jumped in in single user mode and issued an "fsck= =20 > -y" on a corrupted filesystem; you may want to check. Ah, we had that on another server, too. This seems to be normal freebsd behaviour when it wants to be repaired :-) I think I'll give it again a try but will search in parallel for a scsi card replacement (see other mail). What also makes me wonder is that many times the system has to rebuilt the raid1 after a crash. looks like they are written asynchronously. Some servers are down obviously so I cannot lookup which product is built in exactly. I can find out tomorrow though. Are you looking for hardware raid, or do you want to do software raid ? Another question that comes to my mind: Did you analyze the disk i/o any further ? My experience with FreeBSD shows, that upgrading the main memory generously (2 or 4 GB) will allow the system to fill the buffer cache with file data, while leaving the "Namei lookup cache" constrained to some degree. If you run systat -vmstat 1, you can see everything on one place: 1.) On the bottom, you can see the actual disk utilization. 2.) Above, you can watch the "Namei" cache behaviour. 3.) On top, you see Free Memory, that is: memory that is not used at all So, on my Mac mini which has a very slow disk I face the following situation: I run du -h -d1 /usr/ports to fill the Namei cache. Now I watch the statistics in systat and run du again: 1.) I see actual disk i/o happening on my drive 2.) I see Namei cache hits dropping to ~45% 3.) I see about 300MB of memory unused. Most of the mailserver softwares are using many small files, and I guess that the lookup cache should improve the overall performance more than a fast drive. If you see low Namei hit rates, perhaps there is information available on how to tune the cache ? MPT is a SCSI controller that has some basic raid 0 and 1 capabilities. AMR is a full scale RAID accelerator that is designed with enterprise data protection in mind. As a developer myself, I find it very irritating to get a mail that says "It doesn't work" and nothing else. Turning on debug might help in getting a dump, a relevant error message or something alike; otherwise I wouldn't really know what one could write. BTW: I also complained in the past about the amrd driver on a SRCU42E: turned out from the serial number it was a faulty stock and I'm wating for Intel to replace it. I hope this solves it. bye av. For years I use nfs/netatalk/samba to share them with other boxes (nowadays refered to as NAS if I understand correctly). Now I would like to connect the local storage to a fibre channel network (SAN). I'm new to all this 'SAN'-stuff and before I buy an after all quite expensive FC-HBA, I would like to know if it is possible to 'export' e.g. /dev/da1, /dev/ccd0 etc. to the Fiber Channel interface? I found the next citation in a recent email on MPSAFE CAM, which made me think this might not yet be possible, but is thought of for the near future (a la atapicam ?) : Future work ----------- The CAM API will likely undergo some more small changes to support future work with newbus integration and SAS/SATA/FC transport modularization. These changes will hopefully be done before FreeBSD 7.0 is released. Any idea, help, pointer, [cold shower,] is appreciated. These options will slow down the system considerable though, which can often mask legitimate problems and make them harder to find. The CAMDEBUG option can be useful for SCSI. Often times just enabling bootverbose can provide useful information as well. > > >> As I said in a previous >> mail, if you are having problems with the ahd driver, please contact the >> ahd driver maintainer directly. > > As a developer myself, I find it very irritating to get a mail that says > "It doesn't work" and nothing else. > Turning on debug might help in getting a dump, a relevant error message > or something alike; otherwise I wouldn't really know what one could write. > > > > BTW: I also complained in the past about the amrd driver on a SRCU42E: > turned out from the serial number it was a faulty stock and I'm wating > for Intel to replace it.
