They are both more or less the same - likely even the same chip inside, but the later has pins reduced. AFAIK the later can't have an external PHY, which you can't have anyway if there is neither a connector or PHY itself connected on the board. The 8168 is the successor for PCI express, with the 8111 being the new reduced variant. Both PCIe are detected but didn't run stable with our re(4), but it is said that the latest driver fixes this and also adds a good speed improvement. -- B.Walter http://www.bwct.de http://www.fizon.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de support@fizon.de From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 20 11:31:01 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 09BAD16A417 for ; Sun, 20 Jan 2008 11:31:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from cryptwizard@gmail.com) Received: from rv-out-0910.google.com (rv-out-0910.google.com [209.85.198.190]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CB28213C44B for ; Sun, 20 Jan 2008 11:31:00 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from cryptwizard@gmail.com) Received: by rv-out-0910.google.com with SMTP id l15so1556708rvb.43 for ; Sun, 20 Jan 2008 03:31:00 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:mime-version:content-type; bh=fZKSIwzrWeNgkvnTMAbaIs7Xdxn9+ZB/0Yq/f74dZxU=; b=W907lUAiy248Nf7i2Ae+CHKv113dRrZgVaxijOjYQWjkluw9eLfw/q18H6sQi6mwUaApg/7Ga+cK7vd4J/ONxqYGx3XjTH127DbXRheIuqMI37gc20TcguCR52u312HCI8en9aM1l3uW6llU+7A4xvvuC5CZg3XIqKQjjRsoEo0= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=message-id:date:from:to:subject:mime-version:content-type; b=vTJHi0brCgO0gSjwvtxMFp973dJilVG2EgyNh2dxi9Y5lJpvlWhJ9EWhPHnHrih7ywXY5W4XecXo6EZXNYT1aeo21czN8nM2zhlgih/tmFDHvLjSsnj3EFBTsIBTuCrmP1ATNfI9RYHFMzx4zJvKL/498/ljo5Sh6j2Q5/qiQKA= Received: by 10.141.96.21 with SMTP id y21mr3674567rvl.132.1200827092251; Sun, 20 Jan 2008 03:04:52 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.140.143.6 with HTTP; Sun, 20 Jan 2008 03:04:52 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2008 22:04:52 +1100 From: CryptWizard To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Subject: Atheros AR5005GS X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2008 11:31:01 -0000 I just want to ask if this wireless mini-PCI card is supported on FreeBSD and whether it would work with a mini-PCI to PCI adapter. I thought I would give one of our servers a whirl and try both 6.2-RELEASE (amd64) and 6.3-RELEASE (amd64). I used amd64 for this install because the server has 16GB of memory. Perhaps you can send a dmesg so we can compare? The dmesg you see below on both installs was done out of the box without anything done to kernel or any other files on the same 2680 server. One of the additions is seeable by issuing ifconfig, that is TSO4, which wasn't supported previously, but there were other speed enhancements as well. I've just looked into CVS and it was added in Rev 1.101 I don't know how much of it made it into 7.0. -- B.Walter http://www.bwct.de http://www.fizon.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de support@fizon.de From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 21 16:29:29 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 945DB16A418 for ; Mon, 21 Jan 2008 16:29:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from cs@wa-sp.com) Received: from webmail1.b-one.net (webmail1.b-one.net [195.47.247.29]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5618E13C468 for ; Mon, 21 Jan 2008 16:29:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from cs@wa-sp.com) Received: from webmail01.one.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by webmail1.b-one.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3364C1A28A for ; Mon, 21 Jan 2008 16:56:21 +0100 (CET) Received: from 81.235.28.80 (SquirrelMail authenticated user cs@wa-sp.com) by webmail01.one.com with HTTP; Mon, 21 Jan 2008 16:56:21 +0100 (CET) Message-ID: <62193.81.235.28.80.1200930981.squirrel@webmail01.one.com> Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2008 16:56:21 +0100 (CET) From: cs@wa-sp.com To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org User-Agent: SquirrelMail/1.4.10a MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Subject: Dell XPS 1530 - Network card issue - Marvell 88E8040 X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2008 16:29:29 -0000 Hi, It appears as if the Marvell 88E8040 is not yet supported by FreeBSD and specifically the msk(4) driver. I would just like to know if there are any plans on adding support for the above mentioned NIC. Normally I wouldn't even bother asking, and just shrug and say, tough luck they don't support it... next distribution. Thing is, I really, really like FreeBSD. I'm kind of a GNU/Linux guy, but I've never managed to settle for a distribution and have moved from one to another, never quite finding something that works with me, and not against me. Then I tried FreeBSD, actually I just read much of the available documentation and I was "converted". _THIS_ is how documentation should be written; clear, concise, to the point and most of all, USEFUL! Thank you! So, my point is that I really want this to work out. I'm willing to give as much time as necessary to get this driver working. Whether it's just a little Device_ID change in the source, I don't know. However, if anyone is up for helping me getting this to work, I'll provide whatever information I can. Many thanks, and keep up the fantastic work on the FreeBSD operating system. Regards, Christoffer Strömblad PS: I've tried 7.0-RC1 and FreeBSD 6.3, no luck. I ended up with an Intel card which works fine. I've noticed that re(4) has recently been overhauled extensively (as in the last week), will these changes ever get merged back into 6_STABLE, or do they depend on changes only present in 7.X onward? WPA2 is not essential for me, but it would be nice and possibly useful in the future. -- Nate Eldredge nge@cs.hmc.edu From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 23 15:42:04 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 76E4F16A475 for ; Wed, 23 Jan 2008 15:42:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from eimar.koort@gmail.com) Received: from wa-out-1112.google.com (wa-out-1112.google.com [209.85.146.180]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 42A0013C4F7 for ; Wed, 23 Jan 2008 15:42:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from eimar.koort@gmail.com) Received: by wa-out-1112.google.com with SMTP id k17so5102393waf.3 for ; Wed, 23 Jan 2008 07:42:03 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:references; bh=gp5u+11q+bVjYPpCUxVwwnMUhnycCD9Sp2DQOyworG0=; b=W+0FxJVmoiNjRgpeZV0IPIXrf5KKUjysfhsmLE3qyWlpfhLMa2nUCTbPZ0tGhcsIErbZ96APiKgG53uNSIfJQyK4HXet/fUOhgXYv63/0jBdVpjituALsn9wmFv/5R7m7Xv8xgfKPtd+ADFK8ptA26QX6TPHit48aA/w6wohdkY= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:references; b=NmAv3HPJGqALcJBDbPGV7+Wuz1g73yEhfkDIfIjTRxnSz0c6ADhd1T2wPMCphjymCkf+ogn3SH9Kb4R2ieYPeCzvMZkZRzlDcsw6PXFJyFOVMarmid+fqwTwYNvKZ43tsIeVrN9UzbvSnNeWbQov7q94Oqluxmr09kgLj2fIq7M= Received: by 10.115.88.1 with SMTP id q1mr8270125wal.98.1201102923229; Wed, 23 Jan 2008 07:42:03 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.114.109.14 with HTTP; Wed, 23 Jan 2008 07:42:03 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <109c90a0801230742y35f127a4w444053af1a3524f7@mail.gmail.com> Date: Wed, 23 Jan 2008 17:42:03 +0200 From: "Eimar Koort" To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <20080122174944.f1b46291.ray@dlink.ua> MIME-Version: 1.0 References: <109c90a0801061055s3c028b06j488d9bdb3419d2f6@mail.gmail.com> <200801062342.59891.hselasky@c2i.net> <109c90a0801062205s6d12e608y59095d703d6eec1c@mail.gmail.com> <20080108110918.6fdd9f3b.ray@dlink.ua> <109c90a0801082250r70fc1c43l4bcf27840ab45faf@mail.gmail.com> <109c90a0801090133o5d64e943s6c1879a15291dde4@mail.gmail.com> <20080122174944.f1b46291.ray@dlink.ua> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Cc: Alexandr Rybalko Subject: Re: ZTE MG478 usbmodem X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 23 Jan 2008 15:42:04 -0000 Hi, > > >> Hi, > >> Just to be correct. Tried other drivers too - just to be sure. Maybe problem is that device becomes slowly available slowly and driver does'nt wait so long or something.. I don't know. The only unusual feature is an additional button for "double-click" - I am not sure if it's simulated within the mouse itself or if it is reported to controller/driver. There is a problem with this mouse though: if I don't do anything special then this mouse acts very erratically and misbehaves all it can - movements are ignored or reported as button clicks, button clicks get reported as movements or clicks of different buttons, etc. One cure that I initially found was to kill moused, disconnect and reconnect the mouse and restart moused, after that moused worked well. Then, I found out that I could achieve the same if I specify 0x200 flag (no id probing). Judging from verbose dmesg the mouse is detected as a generic ps/2 mouse with or without this flag, there is no difference whatsoever. So it seems that probing for various mouse models somehow hoses this mouse. Question #1: maybe some kind of additional mouse reset should be performed after all probes failed and we settle on generic? Well, while flag 0x200 makes the mouse behave reasonably, it seems that the presence of the wheel is not detected (or mouse is configured to ignore it?), so I can not use it. Question #2: what are the further steps to debug this issue so that this mouse is properly recognized? I really would like to get the wheel working. I can provide any additional information needed. Thank you. -- Andriy Gapon
