Yes, kldload works. kldload finds the modules located as I indicated in my original post. I want the modules to be loaded at boot time not after login. It appears the loader is not looking at /boot/loader.conf. There was some talk of moving this functionality (at least in part) to the rc.d functionality. This installs many dependent packages but it does not install xorg nor gdm. This has been the case since 7.1 and it was again when I upgraded from 8.2 to 9.0-RC3 earlier this week. I do not use FreeBSD on a regular basis though I would like too. Therefore, at each update I am a little rusty in getting my system back to where it was before the upgrade. This time I did remember that it was necessary install pkg_add xorg -r but the first time around I forgot about gdm. Thus my system would not launch gnome. Maybe all the dependencies for gnome2 works but not for gnome2-lite. If all the dependencies worked as they should then upgrading is a six step process to restore the new OS and desktop with no time required to debug. pkg_delete -a freebsd-update upgrade -r 9.0-RC3 freebsd-update install pkg_add gnome2-lite -r shutdown -r now freebsd-update install >From there I do add some other packages such as Firefox, etc. It was also necessary to manually install portsupgrade as well. >How-To-Repeat: Every upgrade that I have performed since 7.1 >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Dec 14 22:14:27 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4FAA61065688 for ; Wed, 14 Dec 2011 22:14:27 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from avg@FreeBSD.org) Received: from citadel.icyb.net.ua (citadel.icyb.net.ua [212.40.38.140]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9B02E8FC08 for ; Wed, 14 Dec 2011 22:14:26 +0000 (UTC) Received: from porto.starpoint.kiev.ua (porto-e.starpoint.kiev.ua [212.40.38.100]) by citadel.icyb.net.ua (8.8.8p3/ICyb-2.3exp) with ESMTP id AAA12963; Thu, 15 Dec 2011 00:00:26 +0200 (EET) (envelope-from avg@FreeBSD.org) Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]) by porto.starpoint.kiev.ua with esmtp (Exim 4.34 (FreeBSD)) id 1RawsE-000PIY-Kp; Thu, 15 Dec 2011 00:00:26 +0200 Message-ID: <4EE91C76.6070101@FreeBSD.org> Date: Thu, 15 Dec 2011 00:00:22 +0200 From: Andriy Gapon User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20111206 Thunderbird/8.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: tomdean@speakeasy.org References: <1323894010.3799.87.camel@asus> In-Reply-To: <1323894010.3799.87.camel@asus> X-Enigmail-Version: undefined Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailman-Approved-At: Sun, 18 Dec 2011 21:51:19 +0000 Cc: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD 9.0 (RC2) Causes BIOS Message on Reboot X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 14 Dec 2011 22:14:27 -0000 on 14/12/2011 22:20 Thomas D. There's no cpuctl_load or nvidia_load in /boot/defaults/loader.conf in 9.0 or 10.0 (I looked at the source on fxr.watson.org for 9.0 since I run 10.0). So there's no way that this can work. Load these modules in /etc/rc.local. What's missing from the nividia-driver port is a start script which should land under $LOCALBASE/etc/rc.d. -- Gary Jennejohn From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 20 10:25:31 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 269DB1065677 for ; Tue, 20 Dec 2011 10:25:31 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gljennjohn@googlemail.com) Received: from mail-ee0-f54.google.com (mail-ee0-f54.google.com [74.125.83.54]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ADC4D8FC12 for ; Tue, 20 Dec 2011 10:25:30 +0000 (UTC) Received: by eekc50 with SMTP id c50so7392976eek.13 for ; Tue, 20 Dec 2011 02:25:29 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=googlemail.com; s=gamma; h=date:from:to:subject:message-id:in-reply-to:references:reply-to :x-mailer:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=YLieeufmpSfyFJr7XqddpJfTyGd+lndYMATuFdvBFC4=; b=LdM1S5iqVyOP2LTvHEZ36wbm1P36ho+5Mp5qYavWBnuEgdRngdKQJCPAtk5yo5LYJL nh89py6AXVNIdDJ4PXDrkpWHwJfnB4FsUUpIvifTV9F30M7sR9nsEIVkgLxJYRm0z4rj SH0ESGTUlwm0NpwIP1rgFCfB+tvvKwVZNFQiU= Received: by 10.213.35.68 with SMTP id o4mr3589338ebd.30.1324376729299; Tue, 20 Dec 2011 02:25:29 -0800 (PST) Received: from ernst.jennejohn.org (p578E26BF.dip.t-dialin.net. That's what I get for only looking at loader.conf. Putting these into my loader.conf does result in the modules being loaded at boot time, so I'm at a loss to explain why it doesn't work for you (tomdean). Looks like the loader is smart enough to interpret xxx_load to mean "load module xxx from the usual module paths, if found." Live and learn. This makes me wonder what your kern.module_path is set to. Mine is kern.module_path: /boot/test;/boot/modules (I booted from /boot/test). But loading them in rc.local will definitely work and automate it for you. -- Gary Jennejohn From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 20 13:01:02 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A24A21065677 for ; Tue, 20 Dec 2011 13:01:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jhb@freebsd.org) Received: from cyrus.watson.org (cyrus.watson.org [65.122.17.42]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 798468FC0C for ; Tue, 20 Dec 2011 13:01:02 +0000 (UTC) Received: from bigwig.baldwin.cx (bigwig.baldwin.cx [96.47.65.170]) by cyrus.watson.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 1D6B346B09; Tue, 20 Dec 2011 08:01:02 -0500 (EST) Received: from jhbbsd.localnet (unknown [209.249.190.124]) by bigwig.baldwin.cx (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id A3F9DB914; Tue, 20 Dec 2011 08:01:01 -0500 (EST) From: John Baldwin To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org, tomdean@speakeasy.org Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2011 08:01:00 -0500 User-Agent: KMail/1.13.5 (FreeBSD/8.2-CBSD-20110714-p8; KDE/4.5.5; amd64; ; ) References: <201112190730.pBJ7UESQ097170@freefall.freebsd.org> <1324319166.3799.144.camel@asus> In-Reply-To: <1324319166.3799.144.camel@asus> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <201112200801.00926.jhb@freebsd.org> X-Greylist: Sender succeeded SMTP AUTH, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.7 (bigwig.baldwin.cx); Tue, 20 Dec 2011 08:01:01 -0500 (EST) Cc: Subject: Re: amd64/163442: boot/loader.conf not processed at boot time X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2011 13:01:02 -0000 On Monday, December 19, 2011 1:26:06 pm Thomas D. No change in the boot process. I have an idea. I use grub to control a triple boot, Windows 7 (warranty) Linux, and FreeBSD 9.0(RC2) The grub menu for FreeBSD is insmod part_gpt insmod ufs_2 set root='(hd1.gpt4)' kfreebsd /boot/kernel/kernel kfreebsd_loadenv /boot/device.hints set kFreeBSD.vfs.root.mountfrom=ufs:/dev/ada1p4 set kFreeBSD.vfs.root.mountfrom.options=rw This bypasses the loader! I need to do some research. Is it possible to load the loader rather than the kernel? So, I guess I have to do a work around. I have rebooted this machine too many times, so I guess I got used to not seeing the beastie. Sorry for missing this. When I figure it out, I will post again. Uh, so using grub to load the loader was the fix? That isn't a real fix. Can you disable the beastie (beastie_disable="YES") and the automatic boot (autoboot_delay="NO") in loader.conf and then either use a serial console or a camera to capture the messages on the screen when it loads the modules. Then do a boot -v from the prompt and save the output of 'dmesg' to a file after it boots. Put that file up somewhere where I can look at it to see if there were errors parsing the modules loaded from the loader. -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Dec 21 13:50:08 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 32392106564A for ; I installed grub in my original configuration of the new machine, built from components, no OS. I created gpt partitions on two disks with linux. I installed windows 7 on the first disk, then, linux with grub on the second disk, fixing grub to boot windows. Then, I installed FreeBSD on the second disk. Again, I edited grub (in linux) to boot all three. At this point, I had grub configured to directly load the FreeBSD kernel, not using the loader. So, any loader configurations were not effective because the loader was never executed. The beastie never appeared. Until the discussion on this list, I never noticed the absence. This was a mistake on my part. I wanted to use the FreeBSD loader and get the benefits of configuring modules, etc., at boot time. Going back to linux and configuring grub properly to use the FreeBSD loader fixed the problem. I can try to gather information, but, I will have to go back to the improper (broken?) grub configuration to do it. tomdean From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Dec 21 22:01:41 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6E3BA106566C for ; Wed, 21 Dec 2011 22:01:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jhb@freebsd.org) Received: from cyrus.watson.org (cyrus.watson.org [65.122.17.42]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 41D178FC1F for ; Wed, 21 Dec 2011 22:01:41 +0000 (UTC) Received: from bigwig.baldwin.cx (bigwig.baldwin.cx [96.47.65.170]) by cyrus.watson.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id EDA3D46B0D; Wed, 21 Dec 2011 17:01:40 -0500 (EST) Received: from jhbbsd.localnet (unknown [209.249.190.124]) by bigwig.baldwin.cx (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 83C6DB941; Wed, 21 Dec 2011 17:01:40 -0500 (EST) From: John Baldwin To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org, tomdean@speakeasy.org Date: Wed, 21 Dec 2011 17:01:39 -0500 User-Agent: KMail/1.13.5 (FreeBSD/8.2-CBSD-20110714-p8; KDE/4.5.5; amd64; ; ) References: <201112190730.pBJ7UESQ097170@freefall.freebsd.org> <4EF1D472.5000708@FreeBSD.org> <1324490127.6799.12.camel@asus> In-Reply-To: <1324490127.6799.12.camel@asus> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <201112211701.39995.jhb@freebsd.org> X-Greylist: Sender succeeded SMTP AUTH, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.7 (bigwig.baldwin.cx); Wed, 21 Dec 2011 17:01:40 -0500 (EST) Cc: Subject: Re: amd64/163442: boot/loader.conf not processed at boot time X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 21 Dec 2011 22:01:41 -0000 On Wednesday, December 21, 2011 12:55:27 pm Thomas D.
