Most users will want ports -- having it checked by default is entirely sensible. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Oct 23 15:11:14 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sysinstall@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 85EB8106567E; Sun, 23 Oct 2011 15:11:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nwhitehorn@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5E4498FC16; Sun, 23 Oct 2011 15:11:14 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p9NFBEAi031240; Sun, 23 Oct 2011 15:11:14 GMT (envelope-from nwhitehorn@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from nwhitehorn@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id p9NFBEj1031236; Sun, 23 Oct 2011 15:11:14 GMT (envelope-from nwhitehorn) Date: Sun, 23 Oct 2011 15:11:14 GMT Message-Id: <201110231511.p9NFBEj1031236@freefall.freebsd.org> To: fbsd8@a1poweruser.com, nwhitehorn@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org From: nwhitehorn@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: bin/161931: bsdinstall(8): (add sysinstall partition config as option) X-BeenThere: freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Sysinstall Work List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 23 Oct 2011 15:11:14 -0000 Synopsis: bsdinstall(8): (add sysinstall partition config as option) State-Changed-From-To: open->feedback State-Changed-By: nwhitehorn State-Changed-When: Sun Oct 23 15:10:04 UTC 2011 State-Changed-Why: The manual button relies on no such thing and involves no shell commands. Anyway, I closed this because there doesn't seem to be a good way to tell whether this is something that will cause problems or not. There are many compelling reasons to reuse partitions (e.g. /home) that will cause no problems. There are also a number of dangerous cases (e.g. /usr/local, /, etc.). Sometimes they will be fine (they might have been empty and created by hand), and there doesn't seem to be a good way to distinguish between them all. If there is, I'm happy to put it in and re-open (and re-close) this PR. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Oct 23 15:43:07 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 92E99106564A; Sun, 23 Oct 2011 15:43:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nwhitehorn@freebsd.org) Received: from argol.doit.wisc.edu (argol.doit.wisc.edu [144.92.197.212]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6615B8FC0A; Sun, 23 Oct 2011 15:43:07 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; format=flowed Received: from avs-daemon.smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u2-7.05 32bit (built Jul 30 2009)) id <0LTI00000ZNU6Z00@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu>; Sun, 23 Oct 2011 10:43:06 -0500 (CDT) Received: from comporellon.tachypleus.net ([unknown] [76.210.66.1]) by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u2-7.05 32bit (built Jul 30 2009)) with ESMTPSA id <0LTI00N4HZNT3L00@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu>; Sun, 23 Oct 2011 10:43:05 -0500 (CDT) Date: Sun, 23 Oct 2011 10:43:04 -0500 From: Nathan Whitehorn In-reply-to: <201110231403.p9NE3dle067507@freefall.freebsd.org> To: phk@FreeBSD.org Message-id: <4EA43608.2070703@freebsd.org> X-Spam-Report: AuthenticatedSender=yes, SenderIP=76.210.66.1 X-Spam-PmxInfo: Server=avs-13, Version=5.6.1.2065439, Antispam-Engine: 2.7.2.376379, Antispam-Data: 2011.10.23.143314, SenderIP=76.210.66.1 References: <201110231403.p9NE3dle067507@freefall.freebsd.org> User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:7.0) Gecko/20110928 Thunderbird/7.0 Cc: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: bin/161926: bsdinstall(8): disk layout trouble X-BeenThere: freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Sysinstall Work List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 23 Oct 2011 15:43:07 -0000 > Description > I tried to install a machine for use with src/tools/sysbuild, and ran > into a number of weird issues. > > Here is a blow by blow account: > > ada0 zeroed before boot > boot dvd > Choose "Install" > > > Keymap Selection -> No > "non-default key mapping" ??? > What kind of question is that ? > Can you suggest an alternate wording for this? It's difficult to make a UI for setting active partitions since only MBR really has that concept, and this is mostly geared to supporting GPT (and VTOC8, APM, etc). libdialog also (irritatingly) doesn't support mixes of checkboxes and form fields. As usual, suggestions are appreciated. > ada0s1 Modify > "Invalid argument. arg0 'ada0s1' > Again, you've run into a GEOM bug. There is no rc.conf either. They are both copied later, at the very end. This has to do with how the rc.conf editing tools work, so that you can get a second chance here. The first can be fixed fairly easily -- the second is much harder. I'm hoping to have some time to fix both of these soon. There are two basic ways to fix this: 1. Move "Shell" out of that screen, into the "Installation finished. What would you like to do now?" screen, when the install is actually complete. This is the easiest solution by far, and maybe the best. 2. Pre-copy fstab, and try to diff a user-edited rc.conf against the generated one, then reapply any user patches at the end. This seems fraught with peril. > reboot > > Comes up > /etc/fstab now contains ada0s1a ? > It gets replaced (see above). > fix /etc/fstab > add geom_mirror_load="YES" to /boot/loader.conf > reboot > > Comes up > > How-To-Repeat > > Per above. > > I tried once before with a disk which contained a Ubuntu installation, > there I ended up with partition 2 having size of "-37GB" on a 40GB > drive. > Again, can you provide more details on how you got there? There are several components to the installer which are separate executables, and all but the simplest are C programs. The main installation process is done by invoking them in sequence, as a short shell script. This substantially improves the modularity of the installer, and makes scripting it much easier. It also makes back buttons very hard to implement, since they break this encapsulation -- not severely, but enough to cause problems. As I said, I'll take another look at doing them, but it's a nontrivial thing. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Oct 24 01:23:18 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sysinstall@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CC5C8106566B; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:23:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from linimon@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A46D98FC15; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:23:18 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p9O1NIVl000179; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:23:18 GMT (envelope-from linimon@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from linimon@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id p9O1NItb000175; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:23:18 GMT (envelope-from linimon) Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:23:18 GMT Message-Id: <201110240123.p9O1NItb000175@freefall.freebsd.org> To: linimon@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org From: linimon@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: bin/161950: bsdinstall(8): FreeBSD 9 installer enters infinite input loop X-BeenThere: freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Sysinstall Work List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:23:18 -0000 Old Synopsis: FreeBSD 9 installer enters infinite input loop New Synopsis: bsdinstall(8): FreeBSD 9 installer enters infinite input loop Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-bugs->freebsd-sysinstall Responsible-Changed-By: linimon Responsible-Changed-When: Mon Oct 24 01:23:01 UTC 2011 Responsible-Changed-Why: Over to maintainer(s). http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=161950 From owner-freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Oct 24 01:30:06 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sysinstall@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 62EF4106564A for ; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:30:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4AF7C8FC18 for ; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:30:06 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p9O1U6Ad000610 for ; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:30:06 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id p9O1U66m000605; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:30:06 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:30:06 GMT Message-Id: <201110240130.p9O1U66m000605@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org From: "joeb1" Cc: Subject: Re: bin/161931: bsdinstall(8): (add sysinstall partition config as option) X-BeenThere: freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: joeb1 List-Id: Sysinstall Work List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2011 01:30:06 -0000 The following reply was made to PR bin/161931; it has been noted by GNATS. And along with this, help info needs to be added explaining under what conditions one method or the other is used. Help saying something along the lines of older PC bios./hard drives use the mbr+bsdlabel sysinstall method and newer PC bios./hard drives (manufactured 2010+) need to use the bsdinstall method because pc manufactures and Microsoft have changed the boot process. Or what ever is the true reason for this difference. Installers need to have the correct info so they can make the correct decision about what method to select. More verbose help (e.g. pressing F1 to open a help screen) will likely come later. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=161927 If there is help throughout it sure is not in the 9.0 RC1 version. I object to the closing of this pr without any review by the current list. I can not understand how you can say there is help info provided in bsdinstall. The very first dialog box where users select (install) has no help. Every dialog box shown should have a help option. Saying it will come later is not the professional way software is released to the public. This is not the Freebsd standard. bsdinstall is the front door to FreeBSD and is the first thing installers see when trying to install it. Do you really want to show the public such a lack of pride in doing a complete job. In its current condition bsdinstall is not ready to be released. It gives the public the wrong impression (image) of what a great OS Freebsd is. Too many developers and other volunteers have invested tons of hours to have their united effort disrespected by a installer that is incomplete. This pr about adding help info is not the only outstanding pr on bsdinstall. The fact that is is hard to do right, seems an incredibly lousy excuse for doing something totally counter-intutive. Systems with more than one MBR partition are quite common in the wild in my experience. How about you set the active flag on whatever parition contains the / filesystem as part of final cleanup ? I'm not going to be sending patches: I solved this problem once according to the priorities at the time, you get to solve it this time :-) My input should simply count as a single old grumbling fart, and if you think he is totally out of touch, you get to ignore him. -- Poul-Henning Kamp | UNIX since Zilog Zeus 3.20 phk@FreeBSD.ORG | TCP/IP since RFC 956 FreeBSD committer | BSD since 4.3-tahoe Never attribute to malice what can adequately be explained by incompetence. The behavior right now is that any sub-partitioning that you do in the installer gets marked active. It's a little more complicated to turn the install bootcode flag on only if a sub-partition is root, but not much, so that sounds like a good solution. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Oct 24 13:31:40 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 323BE106564A for ; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 13:31:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nwhitehorn@freebsd.org) Received: from argol.doit.wisc.edu (argol.doit.wisc.edu [144.92.197.212]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 05A868FC0C for ; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 13:31:39 +0000 (UTC) MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; format=flowed Received: from avs-daemon.smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u2-7.05 32bit (built Jul 30 2009)) id <0LTK00F00O8RZK00@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu> for freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 08:31:39 -0500 (CDT) Received: from comporellon.tachypleus.net (adsl-75-50-90-239.dsl.mdsnwi.sbcglobal.net [75.50.90.239]) by smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u2-7.05 32bit (built Jul 30 2009)) with ESMTPSA id <0LTK00EPBO8Q4U00@smtpauth3.wiscmail.wisc.edu>; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 08:31:38 -0500 (CDT) Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2011 08:31:37 -0500 From: Nathan Whitehorn In-reply-to: <201110240130.p9O1U66m000605@freefall.freebsd.org> To: joeb1 Message-id: <4EA568B9.6010900@freebsd.org> X-Spam-Report: AuthenticatedSender=yes, SenderIP=75.50.90.239 X-Spam-PmxInfo: Server=avs-11, Version=5.6.1.2065439, Antispam-Engine: 2.7.2.376379, Antispam-Data: 2011.10.24.132116, SenderIP=75.50.90.239 References: <201110240130.p9O1U66m000605@freefall.freebsd.org> User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:7.0) Gecko/20110928 Thunderbird/7.0 Cc: freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: bin/161931: bsdinstall(8): (add sysinstall partition config as option) X-BeenThere: freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Sysinstall Work List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2011 13:31:40 -0000 On 10/23/11 20:30, joeb1 wrote: > The following reply was made to PR bin/161931; it has been noted by GNATS. > > From: "joeb1" > To:, > > Cc: > Subject: Re: bin/161931: bsdinstall(8): (add sysinstall partition config as option) > Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2011 09:28:42 +0800 > > Yes I mean the mbr+bsdlabel method as there is no other method available in > sysinstall. That's fully supported, if you want to do it, and is even the default if the drive is already MBR partitioned. The difference between the two is that GPT is a lot more flexible than MBR (no 4-partition limit, for instance), and allows nice things like labels. There's no old/new machine difference -- 386s can boot GPT just as well as Core i7s. But it's really a matter of personal preference. The only real difference is that you can't dual-boot Windows with a GPT disk (this is why only the "Entire Disk for FreeBSD" option in the installer sets up GPT). We can extend the online help to this effect. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Oct 24 13:33:45 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sysinstall@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7782A106566C; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 13:33:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nwhitehorn@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4E7C78FC0C; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 13:33:45 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p9ODXjMp072189; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 13:33:45 GMT (envelope-from nwhitehorn@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from nwhitehorn@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id p9ODXihH072184; Mon, 24 Oct 2011 13:33:44 GMT (envelope-from nwhitehorn) Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2011 13:33:44 GMT Message-Id: <201110241333.p9ODXihH072184@freefall.freebsd.org> To: ryao@cs.stonybrook.edu, nwhitehorn@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org From: nwhitehorn@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: bin/161950: bsdinstall(8): FreeBSD 9 installer enters infinite input loop X-BeenThere: freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Sysinstall Work List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2011 13:33:45 -0000 Synopsis: bsdinstall(8): FreeBSD 9 installer enters infinite input loop State-Changed-From-To: open->analyzed State-Changed-By: nwhitehorn State-Changed-When: Mon Oct 24 13:33:02 UTC 2011 State-Changed-Why: Thanks for the bug report! I installed rc1 on a ata hard drive containing ms/xp and a second time on same HD containing FBSD 8.2 and I was not shown any dialog boxes offering mbr/bsdlabel config method. A detailed review of bsdinstall resulted in NO options every being shown to point to a dialog driven mbr/bsdlabel HD config method. So if its there you really need massive corrections to allow the user to fall into it. From the installers view point, if there are no dialog boxes leading the user through the process then that function does not exist. Your description of the differences between the two HD config methods is a great example of the type of help info that should be displayed in a help dialog box. If I use bsdinstall and then want to return to 8.x I get error msg because the secondary GPT table from the end of the HD still exists. I got a small script that erases the primary GPT table from the front of the HD and the secondary GPT table from the end of the HD from here. http://wiki.freenas.org/faq:0129 If you want to development a closer developer / tester relationship I am willing to work directly with you outside of the PR system. The -b option to 'gpart add' also accepts a size like "1M", so 'gpart add -t freebsd-ufs -b 1M ...' should work on any drive with a block size all the way up to 1M. Tested and works on 512-byte drives, but I have not tested it on a 4K drive. There's also the -a option, which attempts to align partitions to the value given. '-a 4096' should work on both 512-byte and 4k-byte drives. (bsdinstall's partition editor and wizard do not run gpart(8) but make lower-level calls to libgeom. Still, the functionality of the -a or -b options could be duplicated.) > Moreover, I don't see why freebsd-boot partition should be more than > 512K, if even 64K are currently just enough for FreeBSD. Looks like old > and famous Bill Gates's sentence, I know, but however :) FreeBSD bootcode has problems with a freebsd-boot partition larger than 512K, so that's the current limit. However, starting the first filesystem partition at 1M works for both alignment and compatibility with other systems. From the installers > view point, if there are no dialog boxes leading the user through the > process then that function does not exist. Even in the autopartitioner, if the disk is MBR already, it uses MBR by default in the autopartitioner. If it's a fresh disk, when you press the "Create" button it asks you what partition scheme you want and you choose MBR. If it's an already formatted disk (with GPT, say), and you press "Edit", then you choose MBR. You can also do other things like straight BSD label ("dangerously dedicated") by the same mechanism. It's not that complicated and is well documented in the handbook. > Your description of the differences between the two HD config methods > is a great example of the type of help info that should be displayed > in a help dialog box. It's already in the handbook, and documented very well there. An online help file could probably well be extracted from the handbook. I have no time at the moment -- if you or someone else could prepare it, that would be move things along much more quickly. > If I use bsdinstall and then want to return to 8.x I get error msg > because the secondary GPT table from the end of the HD still exists. This kind of problem is why we got rid of sysinstall -- it bypasses all the normal OS partitioning tools and breaks in strange ways with no error handling on disks preformatted in any way it doesn't expect. -Nathan From owner-freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Oct 25 16:37:24 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sysinstall@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0DF771065673; Tue, 25 Oct 2011 16:37:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nwhitehorn@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D9DD78FC0C; Tue, 25 Oct 2011 16:37:23 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p9PGbNKX016970; Tue, 25 Oct 2011 16:37:23 GMT (envelope-from nwhitehorn@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from nwhitehorn@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id p9PGbNMc016966; Tue, 25 Oct 2011 16:37:23 GMT (envelope-from nwhitehorn) Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2011 16:37:23 GMT Message-Id: <201110251637.p9PGbNMc016966@freefall.freebsd.org> To: ryao@cs.stonybrook.edu, nwhitehorn@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-sysinstall@FreeBSD.org From: nwhitehorn@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: bin/161950: bsdinstall(8): FreeBSD 9 installer enters infinite input loop X-BeenThere: freebsd-sysinstall@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Sysinstall Work List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2011 16:37:24 -0000 Synopsis: bsdinstall(8): FreeBSD 9 installer enters infinite input loop State-Changed-From-To: analyzed->closed State-Changed-By: nwhitehorn State-Changed-When: Tue Oct 25 16:37:00 UTC 2011 State-Changed-Why: Fixed in r226739 and r226741. I'm not asking for help on BSD commands, just want ideas what the mess of 4 MS partitions might be, how best to move them aside. A new purchased HP laptop (pavilion entertainment PC dm3 has all 4 partitions occupied with MS (done by HP or shop) (Label under laptop: Windows 7 Home Prem OA.) I want to reduce MS to just 1 of the 4 fdisk partitions & the other 3 for FreeBSD slices (2 boots of different release of BSD & a large common UFS as I usual do). Normaly easy, previously I've found eg with XP, that new MS machines use just a single Fdisk partition eg F1. This PC is trickier, All 4 are used ! MS `My Computer' says Local Disk (C:) 176 Gig Free of 218 GB RECOVERY (D:) 2.39 GB Free of 14.5 GB HP_TOOLS (E:) 92.5 MB Free of 99.1 MB Booting BSD-8.2 USB image: fdisk /dev/ad4 Partition 1 Sysid 7,NTFS etc 199 M Active start 2048 size 407552 Partition 2 Sysid 7,NTFS etc 223305 M start 409600 size 457328640 Partition 3 Sysid=7,NTFS etc 14866 M start 457738240 size 30445568 Partition 4 Sysid 12,DOS/Win-95 32 bit FAT 103 M start 488183808 size 211312 F1 : 200 Meg As F2 is the main MS FS occupying most of disk. I tried fdisk setting active=2, MS failed to boot then. Reverted back to Active=1 & MS booted again. I wonder what theyre using F1 for ? Repair base ? Or later to allow an encrypted F2 OS booting from another smaller F1 OS first ? Or just to make it harder for people install BSD Linux or any non MS to find a free partition ? Can I merge F1 & F2 somehow ? F2 = C: Main MS 223 Gig I shrank the F2 main NTFS from 223 G to 65G & check rebooted MS & it still boots MS, From /usr/ports/sysutils/ntfsprogs using /dist/usr/local/sbin/ntfsresize -s 65G -v /dev/ad4s2 adjusted bm_size: 1983648->1984000 I'm not clear exactly what reduced number of sectors I should tell fdisk for F2. ntfsinfo -m /dev/ad4s2 | /dist/usr/bin/more sector size: 512 cluster size 4096, volume size in clusters 15869139 dc 15869139 4096 * p 64999993344 Maybe I should allow 1K more than df shows when mounted, as per others below ? F3 = D: Recovery 15 G Hmm, this machibe was bought with legal MS inc licence, but no MS DVD - Sigh I could boot BSD from USB stick & tar this or F2 to another USB drive. (if tar loses nothing on ntfs ?) F4 = E 100 Meg partition 7 Meg of HP manufacturer tools. I could copy with tar to a subdir in C: Not sure how I'll save paths for MS to execute, maybe an MS join command to subdir, if MS still have 'join' command (opposite of mount, effectively) Curiously, dmesg announced number of sector for USB da0 but not for ad4, just: dmesg | grep ad4 # 238475 MB WDC WD2500BEKT UDMA100 SATA 3Gb/s cd /dist/sbin kldload /dist/boot/kernel/ntfs.ko mount_ntfs /dev/ad4s1 /lap/1 ; du -s -k /lap/1 # 25 M mount_ntfs /dev/ad4s2 /lap/2 ; du -s -k /lap/2 # 48.098 M mount_ntfs /dev/ad4s3 /lap/3 ; du -s -k /lap/3 # 12,641 M mount_msdosfs /dev/ad4s4 /lap/4 ; du -s -k /lap/4 # 6.7 M of 101 M df 1Kblocks Used Avail Capacity s1 203775 28815 174960 14% s2 228664319 43896379 184767940 19% # s3 15222783 12708523 2514260 83% # ./hp/ s4 101562 6762 94800 7% # ./$RECYCLE.BIN # ./Hewlett-Packard Analysis with dc shows F1,F2,F3 fdisk partition entries each 2x512 bytes more than df shows as size, but with F4, The DOS FS within the fdisk partiton is considerably smaller: 203775 2 * p 407550 # fdisk shows 407552 228664319 2 * p 457328638 # fdisk shows 457328640 15222783 2 * p 30445566 # fdisk shows 30445568 101562 2 * p 203124 # fdisk shows 211312 /dist/usr/local/sbin/ntfsresize -n -s 65G -v /dev/ad4s2 Cheers, Julian - -- Julian Stacey, BSD Unix Linux C Sys Eng Consultants Munich http://berklix.com Reply below, not above; Indent with "> "; Cumulative like a play script. My suggestion is to just create a recovery DVD from within Windows, blow away the recovery partition(s), and create your BSD stuff. Just beware that maybe restoring from the HP recovery partitions will blast away everything on your disk. One thing that I miss about the old Windows recovery CD stuff that they used to ship with Dells -- it made life so much easier (instead now all home PC vendors cram it onto HDDs, just because it's easier and now mom and pop won't lose their CDs by accident).
