This I believe is good news for the state of FreeBSD/ARM on the BeagleBone as Tim told me a couple of months ago his attempt at building a new world on the board failed. I tend to think the audience for the BeagleBone, PandaBoard, etc. is a bit different from the standard Pi buyer. And probably significantly lower in sales due to the angle of the Pi marketing and publicity. The NYC Maker Faire Pi event was packed, and the audience questions focused on the graphics abilities of the Pi. I also think the Pi blossomed as a holiday gift to and from a wider array of people, including the last-minute relative who bought it for their "relative who's into computers" or who is aspiring. Not to downplay the significance of the numbers, but I think a lot of Pis will end up sitting quietly on bookshelves, gathering dust, in much higher proportions than the other boards. It's all good though. More ARM and embedded boards out there means more interest, activity and familiarity. And ultimately even cheaper boards from more manufacturers, not to mention on EBay... Which is why I think ultimately each of the BSDs should be able to provide a simple image easily dd'd from Windows or OSX that is as user-friendly as the current stock Linux ones, with full GPIO support, etc. Heck, maybe even with a cutesy thttpd-based interface. And at some point when things are truly stable, we can start getting board manufacturers to provide it as an option on microSD cards. g From owner-freebsd-arm@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 14 09:51:10 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-arm@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C71FF7 for ; Mon, 14 Jan 2013 09:51:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ronald-freebsd8@klop.yi.org) Received: from smarthost1.greenhost.nl (smarthost1.greenhost.nl [195.190.28.78]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3F368FDD for ; Mon, 14 Jan 2013 09:51:09 +0000 (UTC) Received: from smtp.greenhost.nl ([213.108.104.138]) by smarthost1.greenhost.nl with esmtps (TLS1.0:RSA_AES_256_CBC_SHA1:32) (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1Tugh9-00087B-K3 for freebsd-arm@freebsd.org; Mon, 14 Jan 2013 10:51:08 +0100 Received: from [81.21.138.17] (helo=ronaldradial.versatec.local) by smtp.greenhost.nl with esmtpsa (TLS1.0:DHE_RSA_AES_256_CBC_SHA1:32) (Exim 4.72) (envelope-from ) id 1Tugh9-0001Qi-O1 for freebsd-arm@freebsd.org; Mon, 14 Jan 2013 10:51:07 +0100 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed; delsp=yes To: freebsd-arm@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Undefined symbol "_Unwind_RaiseException" References: <50F3392C.5000908@sasktel.net> <50F35099.3090009@sasktel.net> Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2013 10:51:06 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit From: "Ronald Klop" Message-ID: In-Reply-To: <50F35099.3090009@sasktel.net> User-Agent: Opera Mail/12.12 (Win32) X-Virus-Scanned: by clamav at smarthost1.samage.net X-Spam-Level: / X-Spam-Score: -0.0 X-Spam-Status: No, score=-0.0 required=5.0 tests=BAYES_20 autolearn=disabled version=3.3.1 X-Scan-Signature: b23ffabd93680167408d22b6bc748885 X-BeenThere: freebsd-arm@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the StrongARM Processor List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2013 09:51:10 -0000 On Mon, 14 Jan 2013 01:26:01 +0100, Stephen Hurd wrote: > Ronald Klop wrote: >> A total shot in the dark but could it have to do with this commit. >> http://www.secnetix.de/olli/FreeBSD/svnews/index.py?r=245272 > > Nah, my source tree is older than that commit. With the Raspberry Pi, you can plug it into the back of a TV, plug in a keyboard and mouse and you have a fully capable computer. With the BeagleBone, the only way to initially interface with it is via serial which means you need a computer. Once its configured, you can turn on ssh and log in over the network but you still need computer. Not to downplay the significance of the numbers, but I think a lot of Pis > will end up sitting quietly on bookshelves, gathering dust, in much higher > proportions than the other boards. > If the Raspberry Pi foundation is also successful in getting this widely adopted for education use, you are going to have a whole generation of kids who grow up learning python on the Raspberry Pi similar to how people used to learn basic on a Commodore 64 On the hobbyist side, I think in the long run the opposite is going to happen. The big win is that it has more output options then the BeagleBone. I have seen the Raspberry Pi used for everything from simple networked media players to a remote control for a dslr camera. Someone even used it to automate brewing of beer. Since the board is so cheap, once your project is "in production", you just leave it as is and go buy another one for 25 bucks. For me at least, the BeagleBone is just expensive enough that I wouldn't want to just go out and buy another one From owner-freebsd-arm@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 16 09:51:39 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-arm@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A527F4F4 for ; Wed, 16 Jan 2013 09:51:39 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jakob@alvermark.net) Received: from smtprelay-b22.telenor.se (smtprelay-b22.telenor.se [195.54.99.213]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4894F933 for ; Wed, 16 Jan 2013 09:51:38 +0000 (UTC) Received: from ipb5.telenor.se (ipb5.telenor.se [195.54.127.168]) by smtprelay-b22.telenor.se (Postfix) with ESMTP id D2D75EB352 for ; Wed, 16 Jan 2013 10:25:41 +0100 (CET) X-SENDER-IP: [85.229.94.62] X-LISTENER: [smtp.bredband.net] X-IronPort-Anti-Spam-Filtered: true X-IronPort-Anti-Spam-Result: AoB8AKdx9lBV5V4+PGdsb2JhbABFgwcnLYcXqxiHexcDAQEBATg0gl8cgTEMCiSIJpdkn3WOD4MpA6lL X-IronPort-AV: E=Sophos;i="4.84,478,1355094000"; d="scan'208";a="261394423" Received: from c-3e5ee555.06-11-73746f31.cust.bredbandsbolaget.se (HELO sigyn.alvermark.net) ([85.229.94.62]) by ipb5.telenor.se with ESMTP; 16 Jan 2013 10:25:39 +0100 Received: from gw.inter-sonic.com ([212.247.8.97] helo=[192.168.1.191]) by sigyn.alvermark.net with esmtpa (Exim 4.72 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1TvPBM-000CxR-Me for freebsd-arm@freebsd.org; Wed, 16 Jan 2013 10:21:16 +0100 From: Jakob Alvermark Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Subject: Isochronous USB transfers on RPI? The way it usually goes: memory resource is allocated in driver's attach method then busspace tag/handle obtained by calling rman_get_bustag and rman_get_bushandle, stored in softc and used as a parameters of bus_space calls. No other operations on handle/tag are performed. There are bus_read/bus_write wrappers that provide cleaner API and reduce code complexity. I believe it might be worth going through the code and fixing cases of excessive use of bus_space_ functions. Unless I missed something. I don't think you missed anything, and I totally agree with this. Something I tried for a while was to extend the shorthand to the next logical level. We have bus_space_whatever(sc->restag, sc->reshandle, ...) then bus_whatever(sc->resource, ...) so next for me is device_whatever(sc, ...) But I fell back out of the habit pretty quickly. What I still like best of all is the RD4() and WR4() macros that Warner used in the at91 code. They are the same idea as my device_whatever() but with uglier names (that I still like better despite all the ugly). -- Ian From owner-freebsd-arm@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 17 05:01:59 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-arm@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8D3971A5 for ; Thu, 17 Jan 2013 05:01:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from alie@affle.com) Received: from mail-ie0-f169.google.com (mail-ie0-f169.google.com [209.85.223.169]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3BDE334C for ; Thu, 17 Jan 2013 05:01:58 +0000 (UTC) Received: by mail-ie0-f169.google.com with SMTP id c14so4138111ieb.14 for ; Wed, 16 Jan 2013 21:01:58 -0800 (PST) X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=google.com; s=20120113; h=x-received:x-rim-org-msg-ref-id:message-id :content-transfer-encoding:reply-to:x-priority:references :in-reply-to:sensitivity:importance:subject:to:from:date :content-type:mime-version:x-gm-message-state; bh=lLuk38eIvNIYgb3RG5yA5uSZ8rb3Qe2CfIPEI6PxUMY=; b=QQpWfF9UFlZtbx2+MzkT4hGikTrzA+WC+ZuP5Z52k8WZ/1ba05gHc82vA/RMiQP7Cn 84WTLgceNDjxGz5jFIaQotkcCTJgo9cYBi851GsvqAkkYsa8xu66JQslYSgveZjvoFLG ivQYMlJRCo+SZVdcE8v4Oj9OFJjVgsV2zP9WeUTzmC/fYmRuLYTTzYXotU0KIHd1lQIV Qku5zR9tF344SzEv9VgkoKSc5UPSombHxxw5dXJAcbKrW1wVS6T8/NMS8PxGAzRDTZ0A Utubp6KqToUK/eAijUAqt0QUy1arHFXKffrGDnN9B1IeowRcW/cUPMesB5L4pSfp1Imr WWcQ== X-Received: by 10.50.220.199 with SMTP id py7mr6988869igc.34.1358398918407; Wed, 16 Jan 2013 21:01:58 -0800 (PST) Received: from 172.22.81.188 (bda-216-9-250-138.bis3.ap.blackberry.com. Both clang and gcc compile the same application on x86_64. So some bits might be missing in clang's std = library=20 for ARM. =20 From owner-freebsd-arm@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 17 05:44:12 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-arm@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D20D96BD for ; Thu, 17 Jan 2013 05:44:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jakob@alvermark.net) Received: from smtprelay-b22.telenor.se (smtprelay-b22.telenor.se [195.54.99.213]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4F408695 for ; Thu, 17 Jan 2013 05:44:12 +0000 (UTC) Received: from ipb5.telenor.se (ipb5.telenor.se [195.54.127.168]) by smtprelay-b22.telenor.se (Postfix) with ESMTP id 649C6EB7DF for ; Thu, 17 Jan 2013 06:44:10 +0100 (CET) X-SENDER-IP: [85.229.94.62] X-LISTENER: [smtp.bredband.net] X-IronPort-Anti-Spam-Filtered: true X-IronPort-Anti-Spam-Result: Ahc2AKaO91BV5V4+PGdsb2JhbABEvgcXAwEBAQE4NIIeAQEBAQMBAQEvARsIGAsQCw4KLicBBQQIChQGCAIFBAEcBId8CLktjRCEKAONfYVhg0qNYoRBgW4 X-IronPort-AV: E=Sophos;i="4.84,484,1355094000"; d="scan'208";a="261807859" Received: from c-3e5ee555.06-11-73746f31.cust.bredbandsbolaget.se (HELO sigyn.alvermark.net) ([85.229.94.62]) by ipb5.telenor.se with ESMTP; 17 Jan 2013 06:44:10 +0100 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=webmail.alvermark.net) by sigyn.alvermark.net with esmtp (Exim 4.72 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1TviCY-000EvQ-3p; Thu, 17 Jan 2013 06:39:46 +0100 Received: from 85.229.93.180 (SquirrelMail authenticated user alvis) by webmail.alvermark.net with HTTP; Thu, 17 Jan 2013 06:39:46 +0100 (CET) Message-ID: <29663.85.229.93.180.1358401186.squirrel@webmail.alvermark.net> In-Reply-To: <50F73F19.20401@bluezbox.com> References: <6BD0E5E4-3921-4F9B-9381-3813933670AE@alvermark.net> <201301161319.17236.hselasky@c2i.net> <78AB4FEC-6E16-4FCA-B172-3C7B37FEA4DF@alvermark.net> <50F73F19.20401@bluezbox.com> Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2013 06:39:46 +0100 (CET) Subject: Re: Isochronous USB transfers on RPI? If it is on the arm_eabi branch it was broken after an MFC where ARM_EABI was both enabled and disabled. If it was on head I haven't finished merging the support yet. I'll send a heads up when head it is in a testable state. In either case you either don't need WITH_ARM_EABI on the arm_eabi branch or will find things are broken with it enabled on head. (2) In this case, if the first access to this area for Process A was a load from td_pcb in cpu_switch(), data_abort happend, I think. # Of course, if this data_abort happens in other place, data_abort_handler() # mapps correctly for Process B. > I agree however it may come back to hunt us one day, so I'll see if > I can not easily move that later in the process, after we switched > the page tables.
