It would be Nice if this worked. (I have one of the HD 5450s already, and will soon be taking delivery on another. THESE CARDS ARE DIRT CHEAP THESES DAYS!) I'm neither a graphics guy nor a X guy, and I only barely understand even the terminology related to any of this stuff, but I have just now gone back and re-read some of my messages to this list (and the corresponding responses) from last November, to try to refresh my memory. If I am recalling correctly, the Big Deal with all this stuff is that the Xorg folks... mostly or entirely at the behest of the Linux folks... have re-jigged the kernel/userland interface so as to put more of the work and responsibility for various things (e.g. mode switching) into the kernel, and this has made it kind of a pain in the ass for all the (few) FreeBSD/X11 hackers who have subsequently been obliged to try to mimic that substantial change. Is that roughly an accurate description? When I was last asking about any of this, I gather that the changes had already been made (to the FreeBSD kernel) to support this change in the case of graphics cards based on Intel chips, but the work had not yet been done to support this change for any AMD/ATI/Radeon graphics chips. Is that also an approximately correct assertion? If so, what is the current state of this work... for ATI/AMD/Radeon? Is anybody even working on it at all at this point? I mean from the FreeBSD side? (I am vaguely curious too what the state of play is for Nvidia based cards as well.) Googling around just now for some hints as to the current status of these things, I found a couple of really tantalizing pages, specifically this one: https://wiki.freebsd.org/AMD_GPU and also this one: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_opensource_uvd&num=1 The former causes me to have some hope that AMD GPUs _generally_ might have some decent support in FreeBSD+X11 already. The latter causes me to have some hope that if all the work to support such cards (in FreeBSD+X11) has not yet been completed, then perhaps at least those working on it may have an easier time of it, at least starting as of April 3rd of this year, or thereabouts... ... or was that just another in a long tradition of Internet April Fools jokes? With the help of Konstantin Belousov, J.R. Oldroyd and several testers, I'm working on the port of the kernel-side driver from Linux to FreeBSD. You can find status updates and a small table summarizing the supported features on the wiki page you mention: https://wiki.freebsd.org/AMD_GPU Regarding the video acceleration support, do you mean hardware decoding of a movie? This specific feature is not supported with the current state of the driver: o A bug in the driver related to OpenGL prevents the use of the GPU to decode a video. This bug is one of the three majors issues I currently have and I hope to resume work on this next week. o Support for the dedicated chip (called UVD) was just committed to Linux a few days ago and will be available with Linux 3.10. Therefore, I need to resync with a more current version of Linux. It's not a priority as of now. Furthermore, it'll need a version of Mesa which won't be release before the end of this year probably. > If I am recalling correctly, the Big Deal with all this stuff is that > the Xorg folks... mostly or entirely at the behest of the Linux folks..= =2E > have re-jigged the kernel/userland interface so as to put more of the > work and responsibility for various things (e.g. mode switching) into > the kernel, and this has made it kind of a pain in the ass for all the > (few) FreeBSD/X11 hackers who have subsequently been obliged to try to > mimic that substantial change. >=20 > Is that roughly an accurate description? Relying on the kernel for driving the video card is logical, like it's done for any other hardware. Before this change, the X.Org server needed to duplicate a lot of what the kernel already did. This change also opens up new possibilities, such as better security (no need to run the server as root) and better suspend/resume support (hopefully). So yes, it adds a lot more work to various OSes developers. And yes, most people working on this target Linux. But I won't judge them for that. We must admit that the video cards area greatly improved for the past 4 years. > When I was last asking about any of this, I gather that the changes had= > already been made (to the FreeBSD kernel) to support this change in the= case > of graphics cards based on Intel chips, but the work had not yet been > done to support this change for any AMD/ATI/Radeon graphics chips. I started the project in last January, heavily based on a previous work by Alexander Kabaev. > (I am vaguely curious too what the state of play is for Nvidia based ca= rds > as well.) To my knowledge, nobody is working on other cards, including nVIDIA. > http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=3Darticle&item=3Damd_opensource= _uvd&num=3D1 Phoronix posts regular articles, based on the status updates I publish on the wiki. However, the article you point talks about the support of UVD, the AMD hardware video decoding chip. As I said above, it's just merged to Linux during the preparation of the 3.10 version. And we have many things to fix before considering merging that to FreeBSD. So stay tuned! Once major issues will be fixed, we'll post a Call For Testers with bootable images to ease the tests. --=20 Jean-S=E9bastien P=E9dron ------enig2EEBFIVHFWPOXVRMFQPCP Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.19 (FreeBSD) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iEYEARECAAYFAlGIMSQACgkQa+xGJsFYOlNaPACgvYSGSEayhSCtUjZgfH/BKpo3 axAAoLwN+Kb+ssRzHdmZ6HfgC2NELOT/ =Ytxk -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ------enig2EEBFIVHFWPOXVRMFQPCP-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 7 00:44:23 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 29EE7BFC for ; Tue, 7 May 2013 00:44:23 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rfg@tristatelogic.com) Received: from outgoing.tristatelogic.com (segfault.tristatelogic.com [69.62.255.118]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B883627B for ; Tue, 7 May 2013 00:44:22 +0000 (UTC) Received: from segfault-nmh-helo.tristatelogic.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by segfault.tristatelogic.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 893063AE5A for ; Mon, 6 May 2013 17:44:10 -0700 (PDT) From: "Ronald F. I had mistakenly read that page (and it's title) incorrectly. I had seen that page and mis-read the title as "AMD_APU" rather than "AMD_GPU". So I had thought that perhaps the work being described on that page applied specifically and only to AMD's CPU+GPU (APU) chips, such as the C-*, E-*, and newer E1-*, E2-*, A2-*, A4-*, A6-*, A8-*, and A1-* CPU+GPU combinations. But I see now that your work is more general, which is good. >Regarding the video acceleration support, do you mean hardware decoding >of a movie? Yes, exactly. To be more specific, the UVD* stuff, i.e. the hardware acceleration of video decoding. That's what I'm interested in, in parcticular. >This specific feature is not supported with the current >state of the driver: :-( > o A bug in the driver related to OpenGL prevents the use of the > GPU to decode a video. It's not a priority as of now. I doubt that I can singlehandedly influence your priority list, however for whatever it is worth, let me just say that I am probably not the only person who thinks that it would be Very Nice Indeed if hardware accelerated video decode was supported for Radeon under FreeBSD... as it is already in Linux and Windoze. > Furthermore, it'll need a > version of Mesa which won't be release before the end of this > year probably. Huh? That is a rather preplexing statement. If you need a version of Mesa that will not be available until the end of the year, then how are the Linux folks able to offer Redeon UVD video decode support _now_, rather than after the versions of Mesa you speak of is released? How are the Linux people offering support even without that newer version of Mesa? (I'm not complaining. I am just confused and seeking enlightenment.) >> If I am recalling correctly, the Big Deal with all this stuff is that >> the Xorg folks... mostly or entirely at the behest of the Linux folks... >> have re-jigged the kernel/userland interface so as to put more of the >> work and responsibility for various things (e.g. mode switching) into >> the kernel, and this has made it kind of a pain in the ass for all the >> (few) FreeBSD/X11 hackers who have subsequently been obliged to try to >> mimic that substantial change. >> >> Is that roughly an accurate description? > >Relying on the kernel for driving the video card is logical, like it's >done for any other hardware. Oh yes! Believe me, I have no doubt whatsoever about that! (It is THE fundamental essence of any multi-user operating system kernel to isolate hardware resources from direct contact with userland programs, and to manage and allocate said hardware resources among and between various potentially competing users, as appropriate.) Believe me, I was not questioning the strategy here. I was just checking to make sure that I had properly understood what I thought I remembered having been told about what the strategy is. (My memory is far from perfect, so I have to double check it frequently.) >So yes, it adds a lot more work to various OSes developers. And yes, >most people working on this target Linux. Often, this is due to a better alternative having become available and/or the cessation of development on the existing port. In some cases, ports are marked for removal because they fail to build and install correctly from their sources, or otherwise fail in operation. The ports, and the reason and date that they have been scheduled for removal, are listed below. If no one has stepped forward before that time to propose a way to fix the problems (such as via a PR), the ports will be deleted. portname: x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati613 description: X.Org ati display driver maintainer: x11@FreeBSD.org deprecated because: Old version, use xf86-video-ati instead expiration date: 2013-05-10 build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=x11-drivers&portname=xf86-video-ati613 If this problem is one that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. Exactly. I understand that Mesa already supports GPU-based video decoding for several months and it's available in the 9.x branch (maybe earlier, I never checked). But to use the UVD dedicated chip, AMD released the code last month. --=20 Jean-S=C3=A9bastien P=C3=A9dron ------enig2ROOWXLAOJDOFTADGTDHQ Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.19 (FreeBSD) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iEYEARECAAYFAlGIwMQACgkQa+xGJsFYOlOCmQCdEwhMp00+1/u5ItLxOAFB3BqG FPcAoI7KZGehGOCtBX8mpWLZADyc6Fkf =xSh/ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ------enig2ROOWXLAOJDOFTADGTDHQ-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 7 09:08:36 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3F4AF45A for ; Tue, 7 May 2013 09:08:36 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jean-sebastien.pedron@dumbbell.fr) Received: from mail.made4.biz (ns25270.ovh.net [91.121.29.24]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 08D0CA48 for ; Tue, 7 May 2013 09:08:35 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [46.255.176.2] (helo=viking.yzserv.com) by mail.made4.biz with esmtpsa (TLSv1:DHE-RSA-CAMELLIA256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.80.1 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1UZdsw-000PfX-Av; Tue, 07 May 2013 11:08:34 +0200 Message-ID: <5188C489.3040808@dumbbell.fr> Date: Tue, 07 May 2013 11:08:25 +0200 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Jean-S=E9bastien_P=E9dron?= User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:17.0) Gecko/20130404 Thunderbird/17.0.5 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Sergey Jamy Subject: Re: Status of ATI video acceleration support? Yes, there's a need to hurry up: for instance, the Radeon X.Org driver dropped support for non-KMS mode in last August. It means newer cards are barely supported, more likely not supported at all. And we don't talk about 3D acceleration only here: this includes modern features such as GPGPU (which targets high-end needs too, not only desktops) but also simply detecting the correct resolution of the plugged-in monitor. Consequently, to use up to date versions of the radeon driver, FreeBSD must have kernel modesetting for AMD cards. AMD has no official support for FreeBSD. Nothing is preventing the FreeBSD project from writing their own radeon driver, but given the amount of code that would need to be written (and the lack of developers working on FreeBSD compared to Linux), it's much easier to port the Linux code than write it all from scratch. I think you may be greatly underestimating the amount of work required to add the same functionality to the UMS driver that is currently available in the KMS driver. The entire reason UMS was dropped upstream is because the developers felt that they couldn't add the functionality they wanted to the UMS driver in the first place. We should not have to patch anything in xf86-video-ati (maybe some small changes), because the userland part of the driver (libdrm, xf86-video-ati, Mesa) uses standard syscalls and DRM-defined ioctls. > Who prevents us from having your driver? AMD already employs several developers working on the opensource driver (both the kernel part in Linux and the userland part in libdrm, xf86-video-ati and Mesa). The kernel part is what we're working on for FreeBSD. Other OSes are making progress too. The userland part should be reusable by non-Linux systems anyway. If it's not the case, we'll work with upstream developers for sure. --=20 Jean-S=E9bastien P=E9dron ------enig2UNIDXAXOGMPQADGOHKJW Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.19 (FreeBSD) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iEYEARECAAYFAlGI9iYACgkQa+xGJsFYOlNFfQCfT4ZVYdAOJ8TvGXy3dzshowfA 0TcAn1ASyHqoFizylQcMrM9Y503wqMLG =5Svw -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ------enig2UNIDXAXOGMPQADGOHKJW-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 7 12:45:52 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5B7813A7 for ; Tue, 7 May 2013 12:45:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from guru@unixarea.de) Received: from ms16-1.1blu.de (ms16-1.1blu.de [89.202.0.34]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8D5795F9 for ; Tue, 7 May 2013 12:45:51 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [89.204.138.13] (helo=tiny.Sisis.de) by ms16-1.1blu.de with esmtpsa (TLS-1.0:DHE_RSA_AES_256_CBC_SHA1:32) (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1UZhH4-0005sC-JB for freebsd-x11@freebsd.org; Tue, 07 May 2013 14:45:43 +0200 Received: from tiny.Sisis.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by tiny.Sisis.de (8.14.5/8.14.3) with ESMTP id r47Cjewu001101 for ; Tue, 7 May 2013 14:45:40 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from guru@unixarea.de) Received: (from guru@localhost) by tiny.Sisis.de (8.14.5/8.14.3/Submit) id r47Cjd28001100 for freebsd-x11@freebsd.org; Tue, 7 May 2013 14:45:39 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from guru@unixarea.de) X-Authentication-Warning: tiny.Sisis.de: guru set sender to guru@unixarea.de using -f Date: Tue, 7 May 2013 14:45:39 +0200 From: Matthias Apitz To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: xorg-server-1.7.7_6,1 crashes (from ports head) Message-ID: <20130507124537.GA1073@tiny.Sisis.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="fUYQa+Pmc3FrFX/N" Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT r235646 (i386) User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.21 (2010-09-15) X-Con-Id: 51246 X-Con-U: 0-guru X-Originating-IP: 89.204.138.13 X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list Reply-To: Matthias Apitz List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 07 May 2013 12:45:52 -0000 --fUYQa+Pmc3FrFX/N Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Hello, I have the following system on a small EeePC 900: $ uname -a FreeBSD tiny.Sisis.de 10.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT #0 r235646: Sat May 19 15:52:36 CEST 2012 guru@aurora.Sisis.de:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386 $ pkg_info | fgrep xorg linux-f10-xorg-libs-7.4_1 Xorg libraries (Linux Fedora 10) xorg-apps-7.5.2_1 X.org apps meta-port xorg-docs-1.6,1 X.org documentation files xorg-drivers-7.5.2 X.org drivers meta-port xorg-fonts-100dpi-7.5.1 X.Org 100dpi bitmap fonts xorg-fonts-7.5.1 X.org fonts meta-port xorg-fonts-75dpi-7.5.1 X.Org 75dpi bitmap fonts xorg-fonts-cyrillic-7.5.1 X.Org Cyrillic bitmap fonts xorg-fonts-miscbitmaps-7.5.1 X.Org miscellaneous bitmap fonts xorg-fonts-truetype-7.5.1 X.Org TrueType fonts xorg-fonts-type1-7.5.1 X.Org Type1 fonts xorg-libraries-7.5.1 X.org libraries meta-port xorg-server-1.7.7_6,1 X.Org X server and related programs all ports are from r315646 (1st of April); I randomly face X11 crashes with the following symtoms: - the display is filled with some colored pattern - X11 seems to be still running, because I can switch with Ctrl-Alt-F1 to the console where "startx" was launched; and Alt+F9 brings back to the unuseable display; I even found a way to provoke the crash: it happens in a few seconds when I copy over some source tree to /tmp which is: /dev/md0 on /tmp (ufs, local) and launch a "make" there; so it seems somewhat memory related; What could I do to nail this down? I do not have an idea, but, do you people can tell how much does it would costs to write UMS or KMS code for FreeBSD??? I think I have the money, I just must know how much is needed.. I really do not care if the code goes in the kernel or in user mode, As far as I can test, running Linux vs FreeBSD in the notebooks I tested the FreeBSD is far more reliable, faster, than Linux. The only problem with FreeBSD is the drivers for the radeon and intel video chips... We will need also code for the wifi, camera, and sleep/wakeup... The idea is to sell notebooks to a closed market, about 100.000 units... each notebooks can sell for US$400 (4gb of ram, 320Gb of disk) 14inch screen. no brand name... Operating system FreeBSD9 or 10, gnome 2.32. OPPINIONS please???? There is project as completed "GEM, KMS, and DRI Support for Intel Drivers" in page : http://www.freebsdfoundation.org/projects This means that FreeBSD Foundation has expertise about such projects . You may prepare a specification for you needs and submit to FreeBSD Foundation for a possible cost estimation ( if they prepare , I do not know ) with a possible support by you about costs to develop software parts for your needs . There are also works on AMD GPU : https://wiki.freebsd.org/AMD_GPU https://github.com/dumbbell/freebsd https://github.com/dumbbell You may supply a more coordinated support for accelerated development . I have read in a page that FreeBSD Foundation is planning to recruit additional full time developers . You may also talk to them about those issues . Thank you very much . (Mere money cannot produce skill and, more importantly, experience. Money can buy more developers, but as Fred Brooks noted several decades ago, adding developers to a late project only makes it later. Nine women cannot have a baby in one month.) >I (and some others) are funding a company to support FreeBSD, I'll ask the obvious question: Why? >I do not have an idea, but, do you people can tell how much does it >would costs to write UMS or KMS code for FreeBSD??? I think I have >the money, I just must know how much is needed.. hehe How much have you got? :-) (If you look in the United States, at least, I'm sure that you will have no trouble finding plenty of people who are ready, willing, and eager to separate you from whatever money you have available.) >I really do not care if the code goes in the kernel or in user mode, >As far as I can test, running Linux vs FreeBSD in the notebooks I tested >the FreeBSD is far more reliable, faster, than Linux. Ummm... well... no, actually. It really depends on what you are doing. For *production servers*, hands down I would go with FreeBSD every time. For most anything to do with networking, Big Iron, serving up zillions of web pages per hour, or crunching massive data bases, FreeBSD performs, and it's built like a tank. Several major corporations... big name players on the web... depend on it, day in and day out. For the desktop however (and I'm sure that saying this here will probably result in my public stoning), as I have learned only slowy and painfully, it actually kinda sucks. As we have been discussing, _full_ support for video chips from two of the three biggest suppliers of such things, AMD and Nvidia, doesn't exist, even for some cards already considered to be obsolete, such as the Radeon HD 5450 which, I gather, was introduced way back in 2011. Support for USB-connected mass storage devices... you know... like the popular plug in portable (rotating media) USB drives that many people, myself included, are using these days... is, to put it generously, buggy. (Just copying a file to one such drive from my FreeBSD system yesterday resulted in a hard crash and automatic reboot, after which I had to manually fsck several partitions, just to get the system back online. And I have gotten system crashes/lockups from just simply un- plugging such devices... something that I was going to look into further, with some kernel debugging turned on, but never found the time to do.) There are other problems too. I'm sure that there are many other kind of peripherals that are simply unsupported because nobody in the FreeBSD community... which I gather is mostly composed of "Big Iron" type people, and considerably less desktop users... cares about the specific peripherals in question. So support for such peripherals is essentially do-it-yourself. More depressing than any of that however is the way an ordinary non-kernel- hacker kind of person can be left effectively twisting in the wind when something unexpected and unusual goes wrong. For example, due to what amounted to just an ordinay power failure, my ports tree became "corrupted" in some vague, mysterious, and unspecified way back in March, and not a single person from the "community" ever stepped forward to even explain to me what the actual problem was/is: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-questions/2013-March/250191.html As of today, I *still* have not attended to this serious and major headache. Since nobody can or will even tell me what the real problem is, I'm going to have to dredge into the source code for pkg_version myself to try to even just figure how what the hell it is complaining about, exactly, so that I can have some hope of correcting the problem... whatver the hell it is. Untill I do that, I don't dare install any new ports an I don't dare even update any of my existing installed ports for fear that will just "corrupt" things further. Oh yea, one more gripe... Linux users generally have access to the latest and greatest releases of _everything_... at least everything that a desktop user might ever want or need. In the case of FreeBSD, this is *rarely* the case. Port maintainers apparently all have day jobs that take priority. Nobody can blame them for that, but it is a *constant* annoyance to be using this port or that port, to find a bug in it, to report the bug to the original developers, only to have them ask the standard question: "Are you seeing this bug in the latest release?" and then to look at either the output of pkg_info or the corresponding makefile in the ports tree only to find out that no, you are running the latest official FreeBSD port of the thing in question, which is one or two or three releases back from what everybody in the Linux and windows communities are running. (Just one example: XBMC in the ports tree is stuck at 12.0. Th XBMC team just released 12.2 yesterday. I could eaily give you hundreds more examples like this.) For all of the above reasons, after well more than a dozen years of being an ardent user and promoter of FreeBSD, as of this week I am getting ready to finally accept the handwriting that has been on the wall for years already. I'm going to dump FreeBSD and switch myself entirely over to Debian Linux. I'm just getting too old for all this aggravation. (Sorry to dump all of my gripes on you all, but this head of steam has been building up for some time now.) >The only problem with >FreeBSD is the drivers for the radeon and intel video chips... No, that is definitely *not* the only problem. See above. If you need a machine to network (vie ethernet) to anything else, and pretty much no matter what kind of wireless or wired ethernet card you have, or how many of them you need to stick into one single system, FreeBSD is for you, and solid as a rock. If you plan to use and/or plug in and/or unplug any kind of USB peripheral however... well.. my advice is that you should make sure that you have current backups for everything. Likewise, if you need to crunch a big database, use FreeBSD. If you want to use (the latest official releases of) XBMC, VLC, Avidemux, Handbrake, or any other "multimedia" type application with any non-Intel graphics card that has been manufactured this century, then buy a Windoze license. At least that way when it doesn't work you have at least a prayer of getting some support from the vendor. >We will need also code for the wifi, camera, and sleep/wakeup... Yes, and etc., etc., etc... (As noted above, WiFi should be no problem. Cameras however are probably going to be USB devices, so good luck with that. Good luck making it work reliably. Proper support for sleep/suspend/wakeup may or may not be there. Even without knowing anything about it, if I were a betting man I would bet that support for that is _alleged_ to be present in current releases of FreeBSD, but that some aspect of it will be broken or will malfunction, and then you will need to report that as a PR, and maybe sometime in 2015 the relevant maintainer/developer may have time to look at that.) >The idea is to sell notebooks to a closed market, about 100.000 units... >each notebooks can sell for US$400 (4gb of ram, 320Gb of disk) 14inch >screen. >no brand name... > >Operating system FreeBSD9 or 10, gnome 2.32. Good luck with that. I really don't know why you would want to swim against the tide. Why not just use Linux? >OPPINIONS please???? I don't have any of those. As you can see however, I have plenty of opinions, most of which I should probably keep to myself, but that has never stopped me before, so... Nvidia cards are fully supported; the only feature currently not present in the proprietary driver is Optimus. Yes, it is a proprietary and closed source driver, but more importantly, it just works. X works, DRI works, 2D acceleration works, xv works, opengl works, xrandr works, vdpau (video offload) works. Save yourself pain and time and just go with nvidia. I agree with you with only one caveat... Right now I'm buying ATI, but I've had nVidia cards in the past. The problem with closed source drivers is upgrades: at one point my Linux distribution (FreeBSD would probably be even worse) moved to a new X.Org; when porting their driver to the new X.Org, nVidia decided to drop that support for that card. So I was faced with either: _ stop upgrading everything and stay with an old system (probably with security holes); _ spend some money to change my old, but working, graphic card (and possibly other components if you don't find a newer match); _ move to VESA drive with no acceleration. While I'm not saying this wouldn't have happened with an OS driver, I still think it's less frequent. Just my 2c. bye av. No worries, sorry if I came of as angry or annoyed in the previous mail. It should also be possible to use /usr/local/bin/gcpp, as long as you have that in path while building. I haven't tested this though. As a side note, perhaps the gcc ports maintainer can be convinced to create this symlink per default... Yesterday I watched carefully what the system was doing. I launched memory intensive jobs (some 'make', firefox with flash and chrome with flash too), and saw with top(1) that the Free mem was going down to some 30 MBytes, short before the display mangel occurred. The EeePC was running (for years already) w/o any swap device. As I wild guess I added in /etc/rc.local the creation of some 1 GByte swap device with: #!/bin/sh echo creating swapfile of 1 GB /bin/rm -f /swapfile.tmp dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile.tmp bs=1m seek=1k count=0 /sbin/mdconfig -a -t vnode -u 1 -f /swapfile.tmp || /bin/sh /bin/rm -f /swapfile.tmp /sbin/swapctl -a /dev/md1 Since this there are no more problems, so far. I have no certain indicator in log files about insufficient memory 9or so like, but it seems to have been the lack of swap. We can close the issue. Good to know the issue has been resolved. 1GB ram is unfortunately a little on the low side these days, especially for firefox and family. Just open a new PR (or reply to this one) should the problem occur again.
