What we did to clothe the naked, what we did to feed the hungry, and shelter the homeless. We will be judged on how much we tried to make the world a better place a Moving Story of Life Without Water... When water started following in Manila Village, Klaria, a lady 92, years old walked to the well, asked for a bucket of water, when she got the backed full of water, she managed to take a sip and smiled. Apparently, Klaria had not not drank water for a couple of days because she had no strength to fetch water 22 km away, neither had she taken a bath for six months. Kindly Join us in Making a difference. ( https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/imagine-life-without-water/ ) =C2=A0 Her last words were, =E2=80=9CI am glad we finally have water in our village. I am sad though, that I won=E2=80=99t live to enjoy it, but my grandchildren will. God is great=E2=80=9D . with help from another young lady, Klaria asked for the water in the bucket to be poured into her body. She then walked back home. The following morning, Klaria was no-more. She passed away. Be part of Change ( https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/imagine-life-without-water/ ) Be part of Change. Donate water today ( https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/imagine-life-without-water/ )... We spend so much on things we dont need. We waste water, yet some are dying to have a sip. Windows is still required for a couple of applications, but I've recently had enough success with Samba4 to try this. Not the problem. The machines have two disks (was RAID-1 before, will be RAID-1 after) and I've run the FreeBSD install on one disk leaving the other alone. I'd like to copy off some of what's on the other disk, so I set about trying to read it. BHYVE ATTEMPT Believe-it-or-not, I tried bhyve first. Being the more complex solution, of course. I tried booting the other disk in bhyve. I chalked that failure up to it still being a Xen config... wasn't sure how that would boot for fail under bhyve... so I grabbed a debian live CD from the net and tried to boot it. Now, I'm following the directions from https://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/virtualization-host-bhyve.html ... And the error both times was failing to find init. Both booting the CD _and_ booting the disk. I can't seem to find any further documentation on my problem. Linux boots to it's initrd filesystem state and fails to leave it because it (claims it) can't find /sbin/init (even though in the CD case, it's there) GEOM ATTEMPT After this fail, I decided I didn't really _need_ to run linux here and I discovered 'geom_linux_lvm.ko' ... cool. The OS is using 32-bit protected interf= ace of APM to issue power off command to APM module of VirtualBox. Our anal= ysis is that the issue is in VirtualBox=E2=80=99s implementation of APM=E2= =80=99s =E2=80=98power off=E2=80=99 in 32-bit protected mode. Please see th= e detailed explanation below:=20 In 32-bit protected mode when, user issues power off command then the Guest= OS calls the function =E2=80=98apm_pm32_entry=E2=80=99 of VirtualBox to ch= ange the power state to power off. The function =E2=80=98apm_pm32_entry=E2= =80=99 in VirtualBox then calls function =E2=80=98apm_pm16_entry_from_32=E2= =80=99 to handle the user call. This function validates the arguments and c= alls function =E2=80=98apm_worker=E2=80=99 to do the actual work:=20 =20 ; APM function dispatch table=20 apm_disp:=20 dw offset apmf_disconnect ; 04h=20 dw offset apmf_idle ; 05h=20 dw offset apmf_busy ; 06h=20 dw offset apmf_set_state ; 07h=20 dw offset apmf_enable ; 08h=20 dw offset apmf_restore ; 09h=20 dw offset apmf_get_status ; 0Ah=20 dw offset apmf_get_event ; 0Bh=20 dw offset apmf_pwr_state ; 0Ch=20 dw offset apmf_dev_pm ; 0Dh=20 dw offset apmf_version ; 0Eh=20 dw offset apmf_engage ; 0Fh=20 dw offset apmf_get_caps ; 10h=20 apm_disp_end:=20 apm_worker proc near=20 sti ; TODO ?? necessary ??=20 push ax ; check if function is supported...=20 xor ah, ah=20 sub al, 4=20 mov bp, ax=20 shl bp, 1=20 cmp al, (apm_disp_end - apm_disp) / 2=20 pop ax=20 mov ah, 53h ; put back APM function=20 jae apmw_bad_func ; validate function range=20 jmp apm_disp[bp] ; and dispatch=20 apmf_disconnect: ; function 04h=20 jmp apmw_success=20 apmf_idle: ; function 05h=20 sti=20 hlt=20 jmp apmw_success=20 apmf_busy: ; function 06h=20 ; jmp apmw_success=20 apmf_set_state: ; function 07h=20 ; jmp apmw_success=20 apmf_enable: ; function 08h=20 jmp apmw_success=20 apmf_restore: ; function 09h=20 ; jmp apmw_success=20 apmf_get_status: ; function 0Ah=20 jmp apmw_bad_func=20 apmf_get_event: ; function 0Bh=20 mov ah, 80h=20 jmp apmw_failure=20 apmf_pwr_state: ; function 0Ch=20 apmf_dev_pm: ; function 0Dh=20 jmp apmw_bad_func=20 apmf_version: ; function 0Eh=20 mov ax, 0102h=20 jmp apmw_success=20 apmf_engage: ; function 0Fh=20 ; TODO do something?=20 jmp apmw_success=20 apmf_get_caps: ; function 10h=20 mov bl, 0 ; no batteries=20 mov cx, 0 ; no special caps=20 jmp apmw_success=20 apmw_success:=20 clc ; successful return=20 ret=20 apmw_bad_func:=20 mov ah, 09h ; unrecognized device ID - generic=20 apmw_failure:=20 stc ; error for unsupported functions=20 ret=20 apm_worker endp=20 =20 The power off event corresponds to function value 0x7. So, from the dispatc= h table the code jumps to tag =E2=80=98apmf_set_state=E2=80=99. As we can s= ee in above code for this tag code simply calls =E2=80=98apmw_success=E2=80= =99 which returns the call back.=20 So, for 32-bit protected mode interface and for the power off event Virtual= Box is not actually powering off the system but simply returns the calls ba= ck as success. Due, to this the OS system does not power off on VirtualBox= =20 We also cross checked the 32-bit protected code on QEMU=E2=80=99s seabios. = In seabios the 32-bit protected mode function is =E2=80=98entry_apm32=E2=80= =99 in file =E2=80=98romlayout.S=E2=80=99. You guys are too altruists, you done it freely for the mankind when others done billion of dollars from your work, now you should ask them for a little common-sense and raise the level by their kindness. For example: Sonny should give you the full implementation of their custom AMD video-driver, Apple should give you the OSX interface. They got bigger because of you, don't be fooled, free the world. You know better what you have to do but the only way is a further approach with the Linux world, they are very stupid because they are trying to get "junk-food of prestige" by splitting it into hundreds of "distributions", everyone want to be as Linus but they know nothing about programming, even though, if they would fusion their work into fewer big projects it could be something: All Debian cancer into just Debian(only the best remaining into the game), a Fusion between Arch world and Gentoo's, Slackware's world+ RHEL's and we're done. The thing is available for you too, try to build bigger teams, smarter, faster, ready to do it for the well being of anyone who deserve it. (Try to get back the NetBSD, OpenBSD&derivatives into the main FreeBSD project, there are powerful brains there. Try to expel corporatisms and cheap software sold expensive from this Planet. Thank you for taking time to read my brainstorms. I hope you can do it. At least, fully implement Spotify for BSD, ask NVIDIA, maybe they already got a trick. They are both green, maybe it works. :D Thank you ! The application in question uses the gradle wrapper (i.e. gradlew) to run, but throws an java.io.IOException error ("Too many levels of symbolic links"). Note that this runs fine on Ubuntu so the assumption is the error is related to some interaction with the Linux emulation. The JDK comes from an RPM provided by Oracle and was installed using the rpm2cpio method shown in the Handbook. Running JEdit with the Oracle JDK works without error.
