With FreeBSD 11.1 the latter system needed a freshly written USB stick to be treated with "gpart recover da0 && gpart set -a active da0" before it would boot, so this is certainly an improvement. From memory, the last time I worked on this, I updated to the latest BIOS on the Asus prime b350+ leaving the settings we've talked about here at stock (c-states, memory clock, etc...), updated to 11-stable, and let things run for a while. This time around, I'm up for almost 3 weeks which is about what I've been getting, so I'm looking for a lockup soon. I think the last lockup I saw was a little different from before. In the past, the console went blank and unresponsive with the monitor showing no signal from the computer. The last time, the screen showed the normal output with a login prompt, but was otherwise unresponsive both on the console and from the network. Note this is on Epyc and Ryzen boxes Yes, it was your iperf3 tests which enable me to freeze the system with SMP enabled. With SMP disabled it works fine, however. have you tried that at all ? Agreed about the performance hit turning off SMP! Am hoping its a temporary thing, and if we can show it *is* SMP then maybe that will hepl with a fix, as there cant be that many places where SMP is handled differently to real cores I would think. If you could test then that would be great! cheers, -pete. An alternative explanation for the etymology of the "What am *I*, chopped *liver*?" expression is that chopped liver was traditionally served as a side dish rather than a main course. The phrase, therefore may have originally meant to express a feeling of being overlooked, as a "side dish." [2] The etymology of the idiom is difficult to trace, with much of spoken references in older television, comedy and cinema unavailable in text form, but one early occurrence appears in the book titled, *The Curtain Never Falls*,[3] by comedian Joey Adams , published in 1949. This does not seem to be ZFS problem as kernel tries to mount it after it probes all other devices showing lots of info to the console. You should enable both of loader's verbose loading and kernel verbose boot and try to capture all output. Does your system have any COM-port? Both loader and kernel are capable of duplicating output to serial port. There will be multiple 'boot prompts' as well. The system starts up, and boot1/boot2 happen. This is where you'll get the first GELI password prompt. This will start the loader, which draws the beastie menu. After the menu, the kernel modules indicated in /boot/loader.conf are loaded, then the text 'booting' is displayed, and the screen is cleared, and the kernel starts loading. Later on you get the mount-root prompt if something goes wrong. Query: Do you happen to have VirtualBox or the nVidia driver kernel modules loaded? This was causing problems for some other people, where the system would boot up, but instantly panic once the VirtualBox networking driver was loaded, since the vbox driver module needs to be compiled against the 11.2 source code to work with an 11.2 kernel. If this doesn't seem to be the problem: Can you send the contents of /boot/loader.conf, /etc/rc.conf, 'zpool list' and 'zfs list' On 2018-06-03 11:28 PM, Warner Losh wrote: > I think this is on your side of the wall... > > Warner > > ---------- Forwarded message --------- > From: David Samms > > Date: Sun, Jun 3, 2018, 7:08 PM > Subject: 11.2-Beta3 fails to boot: legacy mode ZFS > To: > > > > Hello, > > Background: > ------------- > System was originally installed with an 11.0 CD. The problem is SOLVED however. The system in question is an Intel s1200kb with Xeon processor but no COM port, only USB so console access is not available. Make debugging more difficult. Commenting out all ports based kernel modules resolved the problem. In the past upgrades I have had ports based kernel modules fail to load or crash when used, but I have never seen the loading of a ports based kernel modules crash the boot process. Would suggest "we" make it clear in the upgrade instructions to disable ALL optional kernel modules. I expect Nvidia to fail and require a recompile before working with a new version of FreeBSD, but in the past I have always been able to boot to single user mode. This extends to getting ENOMEM errors from g_io_deliver() and out-of-swap errors killing processes on a low-memory system. I'm not sure when it started by it seems to hawe gotten worse between r331535 and r334494. I can see the "excessive wired memory" on my main home system with 32GB RAM but haven't seen it completely run out of RAM. After some gentle use and a nightly run, there is 10GB more wired RAM than ARC. My "low memory" system is a Google GCE f1-micro instance[*] (600MB RAM) with about 723k inodes used and the following ZFS tuning: vfs.zfs.arc_max=3D"128M" vfs.zfs.arc_meta_limit=3D"50M" vfs.zfs.arc_min=3D"25M" The following numbers were gatherer by looking at top(1). Running r334494, after booting, to multi-user, the system has about 187MB wired (94MB ARC). If I then run /etc/periodic/security/100.chksetuid, wired RAM increases to about 580MB, with 380MB ARC, dropping to 467MB and 217MB ARC when the script exits (this is still nearly twice arc_max). Free memory can drop to <10KB whilst the find(1) is running. I have several issues with this behaviour: 0) ARC usage can significantly exceed arc_max. I understand that arc_max is a soft limit but IMO, 3x is unreasonable - especially when the system is under extreme memory pressuse. 1) Significant amounts of wired memory are in use but I can't find anything in "vmstat -mz" that would explain where it's going. Does anyone have any suggestions for digging into this? Don't know if this will help you at all -- I have seen excess wired for a few years, since 10.1, I now run 11-stable, my experience has seen the severity varying over time. I first reported this 28/10/2014 related to heavy disk use on a zpool. https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=194654 The inability to get solid repeatable steps to reproduce have prevented me from chasing this more. My desktop machine originally had 8G and when wired went over 7G there was no choice but to reset. I now have 16G and have a script running constantly to monitor the wired and react when needed, allocating a big chunk of ram normally causes wired to be released, this has kept wired under 10G for several months. I see arc usage sitting at the arc_max setting with wired going more than two times that. My vm.max_wired is at 5G (default) and I think this is a limit that is somehow bypassed, if it could be enforced we might be good. This could be the point to chase in a bug report. > 1) Significant amounts of wired memory are in use but I can't find anything > in "vmstat -mz" that would explain where it's going. I started logging my wired usage and have about 6 months of data, in the following sample, allocating 2G more than free caused wired to drop 4G in about 2 secs, you can also see that arc usage did not change in this time. This leads me to think it may be related to changes made to add support for zfs but I don't think zfs is the one allocating this wired amount. The values I am logging are from - vm.max_wired vm.stats.vm.v_wire_count kstat.zfs.misc.arcstats.size vm.stats.vm.v_free_count 2018/06/06_13:22:53 wired: 9779M max_wired: 5210M ARC: 4.1G Free:3.1G 2018/06/06_13:22:53 wired: 9781M max_wired: 5210M ARC: 4.1G Free:3.0G 2018/06/06_13:22:54 Excess wired detected. Disk images may be downloaded from the following URL (or any of the FreeBSD FTP mirrors): https://download.freebsd.org/ftp/releases/VM-IMAGES/11.2-RC2/ The partition layout is: ~ 16 kB - freebsd-boot GPT partition type (bootfs GPT label) ~ 1 GB - freebsd-swap GPT partition type (swapfs GPT label) ~ 20 GB - freebsd-ufs GPT partition type (rootfs GPT label) The disk images are available in QCOW2, VHD, VMDK, and raw disk image formats. The image download size is approximately 135 MB and 165 MB respectively (amd64/i386), decompressing to a 21 GB sparse image. Note regarding arm64/aarch64 virtual machine images: a modified QEMU EFI loader file is needed for qemu-system-aarch64 to be able to boot the virtual machine images. See this page for more information: https://wiki.freebsd.org/arm64/QEMU To boot the VM image, run: % qemu-system-aarch64 -m 4096M -cpu cortex-a57 -M virt \ -bios QEMU_EFI.fd -serial telnet::4444,server -nographic \ -drive if=none,file=VMDISK,id=hd0 \ -device virtio-blk-device,drive=hd0 \ -device virtio-net-device,netdev=net0 \ -netdev user,id=net0 Be sure to replace "VMDISK" with the path to the virtual machine image. === Amazon EC2 AMI Images === FreeBSD/amd64 EC2 AMIs are not available for 11.2-RC2 due to a failure during upload which is actively being investigated. === Vagrant Images === FreeBSD/amd64 images are available on the Hashicorp Atlas site, and can be installed by running: % vagrant init freebsd/FreeBSD-11.2-RC2 % vagrant up === Upgrading === The freebsd-update(8) utility supports binary upgrades of amd64 and i386 systems running earlier FreeBSD releases. Systems running earlier FreeBSD releases can upgrade as follows: # freebsd-update upgrade -r 11.2-RC2 During this process, freebsd-update(8) may ask the user to help by merging some configuration files or by confirming that the automatically performed merging was done correctly. # freebsd-update install The system must be rebooted with the newly installed kernel before continuing. # shutdown -r now After rebooting, freebsd-update needs to be run again to install the new userland components: # freebsd-update install It is recommended to rebuild and install all applications if possible, especially if upgrading from an earlier FreeBSD release, for example, FreeBSD 10.x. Alternatively, the user can install misc/compat10x and other compatibility libraries, afterwards the system must be rebooted into the new userland: # shutdown -r now Finally, after rebooting, freebsd-update needs to be run again to remove stale files: # freebsd-update install == ISO CHECKSUMS == o 11.2-RC2 amd64 GENERIC: SHA512 (FreeBSD-11.2-RC2-amd64-bootonly.iso) =
