However, I'm finding that when booting FreeBSD 12.0-BETA4 the screen goes blank as FreeBSD takes over the console after the loader is finished. Uh oh, ok, thats not what I was thinking of then. I do not have any bhyve capable hardware running on 12BETA at this time to test with. However, because loader-land is funny in a not-ha-ha kind of way, can you try replacing loader.efi on your guest VM with the Forth-flavored version to rule that out or narrow it down, please? FreeBSD 11.{1,2} and various Linux distros boot fine with UEFI GOP in the same time, the problem is only with FreeBSD 12-ALPHA+. Therefore it does not look like VNC server issue. Perhaps that was with non GOP console only. Either way, we need to make sure this is resolved. Sad state is I do not have any access until after the holiday most likely to any hardware that I can use to work on this problem. My current host: FreeBSD 13.0-CURRENT r340319 and the problem is still present. As I recall, I first encountered this problem when FreeBSD-CURRENT (12) moved to the ALPHA-1 state. At least a month before the ALPHA-1, everything worked fine. At this time, the bootloader was changed to work with lua (and the distinguishing feature is that during this transition the boot menu lost color in the UEFI GOP mode). So, the first thing I thought was that it was related to the lua based menu. Now we know that it is not. However, the root of the problem lies at this time. This is perhaps going to be a stupid question, but where is boot_serial=YES getting set? Loader will not set it by itself and UEFI doesn't respect /boot.config, so this must be explicitly set in /boot/loader.conf or /boot/defaults/loader.conf, but it's not clear to me what's putting it there. We set serial when the UEFI env says = to do so. >Warner I can confirm that 11.2-REL boots fine but 12.0-BETA4 goes blank just after= the loader, using the exact same bhyve configuration. (This is on an 11.2 = host) A few lines are output just before going blank but I can't catch what they = say. I'm using the official ISO files with no other configuration so it does see= m that 12.0 will currently not boot under UEFI-GOP bhyve. I can check the efivars if someone lets me know how. We have had some issues with Xen hypervisors that might be related. They had to do with how= the hypervisor cached MSI-X table entries and that it didn't notice updates to = the table that FreeBSD's kernel performed because it assumed the table was not modified once MSI-X was enabled in the capability register. Commits related to those issues are r302181 + r302635 and r310806. >From the thread about igb(4) that was quoted, it sounds like it might be a similar issue where VMWare might be assuming that MSI-X tables are only upd= ated in a particular order. FreeBSD follows a scheme where it marks all the tab= le entries as disabled and then enables MSI-X in the capability register and t= hen writes individual table entries as the driver calls bus_setup_intr(). This means that the table can change while MSI-X is enabled. A table entry might also be written multiple times if a device driver moves an interrupt to a different CPU than the one chosen by the system. In real hardware this wor= ks fine as the hardware checks the table to compose the MSI message before sen= ding each message. Hypervisors might choose to cache the table since reading the actual table might be too expensive. However, in that case hypervisors hav= e to trap all writes to the table and update their cached copy for each write. = The Xen issues had to do with Xen assuming it could ignore writes made while MS= I-X was active since Linux writes the whole table and then enables MSI-X. For example someone from CBSD Telegram chat reported a similar problem for OpenIndiana 2018 ( which uses FreeBSD loader however) in bhyve. Thus, perhaps the root of this problem should be sought in uefi-edk2-bhyve the package. Latest CBSD release (12.0.1) fixed this problem by disabling serial console.
