If you want to compare operating systems and licenses you should list pros and cons of the mentioned operating systems, excluding untruth. If you just want to mention pros of an operating system and licenses, don't add comparisons at all and list the pros and the cons, excluding untruth. If you mention things that could be considered different regarding the point of view, such as 'spyware', underpin it by providing facts/links. Indeed some phone home options off FLOSS could be considered as spyware, but FreeBSD as well as Linux maintainers and users could decide to build with disabling phone home flags and don't need to use data collecting software at all. Some users even consider some phone home options as not being spyware, but a good tool for developers to improve FLOSS software. An example: [rocketmouse@archlinux extra-x86_64]$ grep python2\ waf\ configure PKGBUILD -A7 python2 waf configure --prefix=3D/usr \ --configdir=3D/etc \ --with-backends=3D"jack,alsa" \ --libjack=3Dweak \ --optimize \ --docs \ --cxx11 \ --no-phone-home Even while the ardour developers are unlikely spying, the phone home flag could collide with security measures, e.g. at a given time ardour provides useful data for development, not over a tor network and at the same time a browser is used for Internet research. Under some circumstances this might be unfavourable. Ardour is the only professional DAW available for FreeBSD as well as Linux. It's GPL'ed without any side effect. It's free as in beer, but the developer makes living out of it. Controversial software such as (another example) Ubuntu's 'shopping lens' aren't Linux as a whole, it's some software provided by a Linux distro, that nobody is enforced to install in the first place. However, your blog is nothing else, but good for redirecting it to /dev/null. It's bogus. It neither satisfies a good description of the pros and cons of FreeBSD, neither of Linux. --=20 =E2=80=9CAwards are merely the badges of mediocrity.=E2=80=9D =E2=80=95 Charles Ives From owner-freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Sat Jun 6 10:19:22 2020 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2E9FA32E7D9 for ; Sat, 6 Jun 2020 10:19:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from silver.bullet@zoho.com) Received: from sender4-pp-o93.zoho.com (sender4-pp-o93.zoho.com [136.143.188.93]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 49fFqY48Ssz4VQT for ; Sat, 6 Jun 2020 10:19:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from silver.bullet@zoho.com) ARC-Seal: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; t=1591438759; cv=none; d=zohomail.com; s=zohoarc; b=gopi/WEjUAtCn4mzVJc4J7vX+r1GOb4yn55he9Zl8AZouylpZRkWzVKDl7fyeNpxnjoKAXtM16T87RT+IVgQRZUdg+OBuc1Vely30qFJZS1P2EvyA0EpqDpOyshT6LIOP/Lsf8a+U5iI1hMSJ+FLiD5YebdsOoH7JGdA5wZVlNs= ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=zohomail.com; s=zohoarc; t=1591438759; h=Content-Type:Content-Transfer-Encoding:Date:From:In-Reply-To:MIME-Version:Message-ID:References:Subject:To; bh=H7ZKi+hGc/lyjIJuRfcKr8adBy4SFK750Y10q6nqbic=; b=lW4NaUn7GJo6sJd6NIYG1fcCjgDKgo206RyR8VO/lc9ScsZBjaXPQK545+Lj0yLjUwgPG5vSTMx6icyJ9UMmeH5HpMjqOct651mcSqMrocM3WZ0DfoTTYhKzV7btdTJtRaV0dvBQMLrt6qGIVdofBDYhUoDRDjXaPA5xi2x1qD0= ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx.zohomail.com; dkim=pass header.i=zoho.com; spf=pass smtp.mailfrom=silver.bullet@zoho.com; dmarc=pass header.from= header.from= Received: from archlinux (x5d878a7e.dyn.telefonica.de [93.135.138.126]) by mx.zohomail.com with SMTPS id 1591438758021683.2101680948826; Sat, 6 Jun 2020 03:19:18 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: Subject: Re: Why I support BSD software From: Ralf Mardorf To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Date: Sat, 06 Jun 2020 12:19:16 +0200 In-Reply-To: <20200606120821.1736e765@utnubu> References: <20200605104036.6df59f84@utnubu> <20200606120821.1736e765@utnubu> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" User-Agent: Evolution 3.36.3 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-ZohoMailClient: External X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 49fFqY48Ssz4VQT X-Spamd-Bar: ---- X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-4.14 / 15.00]; DWL_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[zoho.com:dkim]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.02)[-1.021]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[zoho.com:s=zm2020]; RWL_MAILSPIKE_POSSIBLE(0.00)[136.143.188.93:from]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; FREEMAIL_FROM(0.00)[zoho.com]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_ALL(0.00)[]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; TO_DN_NONE(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.03)[-1.027]; ARC_ALLOW(-1.00)[zohomail.com:s=zohoarc:i=1]; RCPT_COUNT_ONE(0.00)[1]; RECEIVED_SPAMHAUS_PBL(0.00)[93.135.138.126:received]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+ip4:136.143.188.0/23]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[zoho.com:+]; DMARC_POLICY_ALLOW(-0.50)[zoho.com,reject]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[136.143.188.93:from]; NEURAL_HAM_SHORT(-0.09)[-0.092]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; FREEMAIL_ENVFROM(0.00)[zoho.com]; ASN(0.00)[asn:2639, ipnet:136.143.188.0/24, country:US]; MID_RHS_MATCH_FROM(0.00)[]; RCVD_COUNT_TWO(0.00)[2] X-BeenThere: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.33 Precedence: list List-Id: Non technical items related to the community List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 06 Jun 2020 10:19:22 -0000 Correction of a few typos I noticed: On Sat, 2020-06-06 at 12:08 +0200, Ralf Mardorf via freebsd-chat wrote: > All operating systems and licenses have got pros and cons. > If you want to compare operating systems and licenses you should list > pros and cons of the mentioned operating systems, excluding untruth. ^ and licenses > If you just want to mention pros of an operating system and > licenses, don't add comparisons at all and list the pros and the cons, > excluding untruth. The distro packages install it with phone home disabled. You might want to take a look at FreeBSD ports as well as Linux. Some panel plugins for weather report services and things like that might or might not collect data. IOW when using a "free as in beer service" that neither the FreeBSD, nor the Linux communities could provide on their own, it might cost something, such as data collection. IIRC the weather plugins I've seen don't do this, but imagine something such as software that might use satellite imagery (dunno if it exists for FLOSS at all). Neither the FreeBSD nor the Linux community have their own satellites.=20 --=20 =E2=80=9CAwards are merely the badges of mediocrity.=E2=80=9D =E2=80=95 Charles Ives=20 From owner-freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Sat Jun 6 11:13:50 2020 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BA26C33010B for ; Sat, 6 Jun 2020 11:13:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from silver.bullet@zoho.com) Received: from sender4-pp-o93.zoho.com (sender4-pp-o93.zoho.com [136.143.188.93]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 49fH2P4yJNz4bxt for ; Sat, 6 Jun 2020 11:13:49 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from silver.bullet@zoho.com) ARC-Seal: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; t=1591442026; cv=none; d=zohomail.com; s=zohoarc; b=DTfXaRE56yn7nd+tWVrmUXEjV9fRs6wS8YfZBZPo8jbYbj+90hBAMo8hXaDtenJbbxSGZYwLa0KgVibz8SfRi5z4wvQGDDtg6ncNXURuX7+g4i8Gei0A16M7dtJ/7j92IARoVAmOU22zurDuK54Oawxi0rGT6XcWT5zoQyUKcdI= ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=zohomail.com; s=zohoarc; t=1591442026; h=Content-Type:Content-Transfer-Encoding:Date:From:In-Reply-To:MIME-Version:Message-ID:References:Subject:To; bh=Rf7mMsnjwPS6I1lbpKhvlH5odU3hHFRE75foEtVufug=; b=KKZQyvbKXRS7lXndYHGGK3WGxXsfNX7YeNldokp+5LKlQw8Q2bGCN/pWJnZCKMjKmz2YGU95KjAcjbJdlpOi3vx32u3Uui6z0ublv5t4GqnmKyKsM90FcTzcux3DHrqf+NNOnDgSOFvSR3Hn5Ho1BBsg7Vv7qXYB1BlRJn6ATnI= ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx.zohomail.com; dkim=pass header.i=zoho.com; spf=pass smtp.mailfrom=silver.bullet@zoho.com; dmarc=pass header.from= header.from= Received: from utnubu (x5d878a7e.dyn.telefonica.de [93.135.138.126]) by mx.zohomail.com with SMTPS id 1591442025228740.4898953661096; Sat, 6 Jun 2020 04:13:45 -0700 (PDT) Date: Sat, 6 Jun 2020 13:13:43 +0200 From: Ralf Mardorf To: Ralf Mardorf via freebsd-chat Subject: Re: Why I support BSD software Message-ID: <20200606131343.3c3ea35c@utnubu> In-Reply-To: <20200606124624.36eaf0f9@utnubu> References: <20200605104036.6df59f84@utnubu> <20200606120821.1736e765@utnubu> <20200606124624.36eaf0f9@utnubu> X-Mailer: Claws Mail (linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-ZohoMailClient: External X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 49fH2P4yJNz4bxt X-Spamd-Bar: ---- X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-4.43 / 15.00]; XM_UA_NO_VERSION(0.01)[]; FREEMAIL_FROM(0.00)[zoho.com]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+ip4:136.143.188.0/23]; TO_DN_ALL(0.00)[]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[zoho.com:+]; DMARC_POLICY_ALLOW(-0.50)[zoho.com,reject]; NEURAL_HAM_SHORT(-0.92)[-0.916]; RECEIVED_SPAMHAUS_PBL(0.00)[93.135.138.126:received]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; FREEMAIL_ENVFROM(0.00)[zoho.com]; ASN(0.00)[asn:2639, ipnet:136.143.188.0/24, country:US]; ARC_ALLOW(-1.00)[zohomail.com:s=zohoarc:i=1]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.00)[-0.995]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[zoho.com:s=zm2020]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; DWL_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[zoho.com:dkim]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_ALL(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.02)[-1.025]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; RCPT_COUNT_ONE(0.00)[1]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[136.143.188.93:from]; RWL_MAILSPIKE_POSSIBLE(0.00)[136.143.188.93:from]; MID_RHS_NOT_FQDN(0.50)[]; RCVD_COUNT_TWO(0.00)[2] X-BeenThere: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.33 Precedence: list List-Id: Non technical items related to the community List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 06 Jun 2020 11:13:50 -0000 My very last comment ;). Pros and cons is a subjective matter. And the list of them is boring. I point at some peculiarities that I sense presence of. I would like people to make their own thinking. I am not in love with BSD derived operating systems. I see things in GNU userland and Linux that adhere to Unix philosophy more than in BSD (as of today) and that is beautiful. According to the subject of the article I am free to write about my reasons. And it should not make a problem if my reasons are of different importance for different people. So, I still welcome people to say a word. Thanks a lot, Ralf. -- Yury https://yvgrebenkin.wordpress.com/
