I outlined process here: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D236922#c49 Which in summary: 1. Use new VirtIO update provide by your patch 2. Disable VirtIO network from dev/virtio and modules/virtio 3. Apply netmap updates, but extend scope of condition compilation in sys/dev/netmap/if_ptnet.c to as per this snippet: <> ... #include #ifdef WITH_PTNETMAP #include #ifndef INET #error "INET not defined, cannot support offloadings" #endif ... <> 4. Remove vtnet driver from sys/amd64/conf/GENERIC & virtio network from sys/conf/files 5. Ensure you have right QEMU Q35 machine version. There is a caveat. This build works on with Q35 v 3.1 not 4.0. From: virsh dumpxml <> ... hvm ... <> So VirtIO is seeing some difference in behaviour. So that for: - Q35-3.1 you get VirtIO Storage - Q35-4.0 you do not get VirtIO Storage Matts has also been seeing variation in netmap networking cross QEMU 3.1 and QEMU 4.1, so this machine variation across release is likely related: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D241774#c69 Likely as per MattS case this is new bug and explains why people are getting different testing results. Th= us, no need for any change in the code. As for 2, netmap currently doesn't ful= ly supports PCI-e. Thus, the approach I took is what I think is best (kernel compile time, kernel size, least time spent of making a patch that works wh= ich was less than 5 minutes, easier future code adaptation to Vincenzo's change= s of netmap). This would allow both netmap and VirtIO to work in conjunction ex= cept netmap + VirtIO NIC. As for QEMU 4.0+ versus older versions (comment #50), I think it may come d= own to compatibility matrix between FreeBSD vs QEMU versions. I previously had problems booting older versions of FreeBSD when I specify CPU model Opterio= n_G4 or Opteron_G5 within QEMU/KVM configuration. Now, I can run both 11 & 12 w= ith Opteron_G5. If you think as a developer/programmer and consider the SDLC, would you want to make something that's constantly changing or something th= at's stable? For those reasons, I stopped using non LTS for Ubuntu a couple of years ago because the downstream needs time in accordance with SDLC to upda= te for the changes. I used strategy: 0) Do freebsd-update -r 12.1-RELEASE upgrade / install followed by rebuild = of kernel with "dev netmap" disabled in GENERIC. The combination of slow update download (due to going from 11.2 -> 12.1) ne= ed to rebuild kernel and using postmaster to re-build ports meant the entire process took around 6 hours. This was for machine with: bind, mysql & apach= e. Which is about as complicated as my FreeBSD VMs get. My other FreeBSD machines are dedicated to running single application: bind, apache/php or postgresql. The only one which is likely to problematic is the postgresql machine, as I don't want database to be unvailable for a long ti= me waiting kernel to rebuild, so will handle this last. Agree it is nice to have LTS stability, but I ended up where I am am due to needed some new features / fixes in QEMU / KVM hosting and related utilitie= s. So looking forward to Ubuntu 20.04 which should be stable and meet my needs. For FreeBSD Releases & QEMU / KVM Testing: Having some repeatable test process in place to validate VirtIO against: 1 release back, current and 1 release forward to ensure that things keep work= ing correctly. I believe this and the networking QEMU / KVM thread has been very helpful in finding source of issues, fixes and work arounds. Thanks you. Cheers, John Hartley. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Tue Jan 21 05:06:58 2020 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-virtualization@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4D757231895 for ; Tue, 21 Jan 2020 05:06:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (mailman.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:13]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 481xNL1RByz4Bgg for ; Tue, 21 Jan 2020 05:06:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 3131D231894; Tue, 21 Jan 2020 05:06:58 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: virtualization@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 30F93231893 for ; Tue, 21 Jan 2020 05:06:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 481xNL0Z7Gz4Bgf for ; Tue, 21 Jan 2020 05:06:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 0E82D7746 for ; Tue, 21 Jan 2020 05:06:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 00L56vQ7097690 for ; Tue, 21 Jan 2020 05:06:57 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 00L56vM9097687 for virtualization@FreeBSD.org; Tue, 21 Jan 2020 05:06:57 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 241808] bhyve e1000 broken after r354288 Date: Tue, 21 Jan 2020 05:06:57 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bhyve X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Many People X-Bugzilla-Who: aleksandr.fedorov@itglobal.com X-Bugzilla-Status: Closed X-Bugzilla-Resolution: FIXED X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: bug_status resolution Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussion of various virtualization techniques FreeBSD supports." List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2020 16:40:05 -0000 I was trying to install a guest using vm-bhyve. Everything seemed to be fine until I went to install the ISO. I used this command; # vm install -f myubuntu For ISO I tried these: - ubuntu-16.04.6-desktop-amd64.iso - ubuntu-18.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso - ubuntu-18.04.3-live-server-amd64.iso I get the first menu screen and select "Install Ubuntu". The screen then goes blank and nothing happens from that point on. The CPU usage is 100%. So, then I tried TrueOS. It also hung. Here is what it displayed when it hung: /boot/kernel/opensolaris.ko size 0xa530 at 0x264d000 /boot/kernel/aesni.ko size 0xc830 at 0x2658000 /boot/kernel/tmpfs.ko size 0x10ac8 at 0x2665000 /boot/kernel/geom_eli.ko size 0x1ea40 at 0x2676000 can't find '/boot/entropy' /boot/kernel/zfs.ko size 0x3aa260 at 0x2695000 | That last character is supposed to be the spinner but it just sits there in one poition. I then tried FreeBSD. I assumed that if anything was going to work it would be that. However even that fails. It hangs here: Loading configured modules... can't find '/boot/entropy' / The spinner is not moving again. I know that I used to be able to install different OSs but something on my server must have changed. I can't figure out what though. Can anyone suggest something that I can check? Can somebody test it again with the stable/11 code? And yes, currently rx mergeable buffers are advertised by the host only when the vale net backend is used (for both if_vtnet and e1000). However, now that I think about that, rx mergeable buffers is not something that actually depends on the net backend, so if we advertise them in any ca= se (e.g., also with the tap backend), things should magically work. I'll test = this theory in the next days. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Thu Jan 23 07:49:09 2020 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-virtualization@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1382922F97E for ; Thu, 23 Jan 2020 07:49:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mat@FreeBSD.org) Received: from mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (mailman.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:13]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 483DtX6pC3z4Fk7 for ; Thu, 23 Jan 2020 07:49:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mat@FreeBSD.org) Received: by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) id E962B22F97D; Thu, 23 Jan 2020 07:49:08 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: virtualization@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E92D922F97C for ; Thu, 23 Jan 2020 07:49:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mat@FreeBSD.org) Received: from smtp.freebsd.org (smtp.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::24b:4]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "smtp.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 483DtX5v7Lz4Fk6 for ; Thu, 23 Jan 2020 07:49:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mat@FreeBSD.org) Received: from mail.j.mat.cc (owncloud.cube.mat.cc [IPv6:2a01:678:4:1::228]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "mail.mat.cc", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) (Authenticated sender: mat/mail) by smtp.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id A99D32FF1 for ; Thu, 23 Jan 2020 07:49:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mat@FreeBSD.org) Received: from atuin.in.mat.cc (unknown [IPv6:2a01:678:42:ffff:688d:c7d:2372:9b50]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (No client certificate requested) (Authenticated sender: mat@mat.cc) by mail.j.mat.cc (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 6C0BF942D80 for ; Thu, 23 Jan 2020 07:49:07 +0000 (UTC) Date: Thu, 23 Jan 2020 08:49:06 +0100 From: Mathieu Arnold To: virtualization@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Bhyve and UEFI NVRAM Message-ID: <20200123074906.bhbpr2cbdmeeqwvz@atuin.in.mat.cc> References: <20200116090442.xgmiwlaiwwyajqgk@atuin.in.mat.cc> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha512; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="elafskrj3fxxew2c" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20200116090442.xgmiwlaiwwyajqgk@atuin.in.mat.cc> X-BeenThere: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussion of various virtualization techniques FreeBSD supports."
