Hardware flaw, only known work around is to turn the cache off. b) Saturn-I (ie, 82424ZX at rev 0, 1 or 2) - write back cache coherency problems. Hardware flaw, only known work around is to set the external cache to write-through mode. Upgrade to Saturn-II. c) Saturn-II (ie 82424ZX at rev 3 or 4) - works fine, but many MB manufactures leave out the external dirty bit SRAM needed for write back operation. Work arounds are either run it in write through mode, or get the dirty bit SRAM installed. (I have these for the ASUS PCI/I-486SP3G rev 1.6 and later boards). d) Neptune - Can not run more than 2 bus master devices. Admitted Intel design flaw. Workarounds include don't run more than 2 bus masters, special hardware design to replace the PCI bus arbiter (appears on Intel Altair board and several other Intel server group MB's). And of course Intel's official answer, move to the Triton chip set, we ``fixed it there''. e) Triton - No known cache coherency or bus master problems, chip set does not implement parity checking. Workaround for parity issue - wait for Triton-II :-(. f) Triton-II - Unknown, not yet shipping :-(. As I was installing I made a few notes and wanted to share them with the documentation team. A couple of the items are suggestions to installation program, but the most of this message will be on documentation issues. * If my memory serves me well there is a menu on the installation that says "step by step installation" or something simmilar. When one selects this option the 'How to assign disk space to FreeBsd" document appears. It may be a good idea to make this document a step by step installation procedure and re-consider the audience to make it more general (ie spell out at least once what acronyms such as NFS, and MBR mean). * Suggested sizes. Although it is difficult to know how much space a person would need since he/she could install a variety of packages the docs could have a few suggested sets. For instance there could be one suggested partition size for each distribution. This would help a lot new comers and will free old timers from having to answer so frequently the question "how much space........." * I found no info on how to install FreeBsd's boot manager. I suggest that either the step by step installation or the on-line help describe how and when to use Booteasy(?) * On the online help there is a note which explains that '=' means that partition starts beyond the 1023 cylinder. What it did not say is that any partition with the '=' symbol can not be booted from. It may be obvious for old-timers, but a number of people, like myself, may not be aware of this limitation until he/she has spent the time to install the software, and then to ask people why it is not booting. This is just a simple note that could save many people a lot of time. * There should be a mention about pkg_manage on the installation docs. The installation makes it easy for someone to get to pkg_manage, but it doesn't say how to get back to it to add additional packages. If there is a note somewhere that mentions pkg_manage then it should be placed in the step by step installation so new users can see it. * Buried under one of the zillion menus I found a list of device names. For non Unix gurus this information is very important and should not be buried. It should be somewhere easy to find. Anyone installing FreeBsd for the first time will have no clue how to configure X because they won't know the name of the device where the mouse resides. I am not suggesting that the docs explain all the ins and outs of how Unix uses /dev instead of names such as 'lpt1', but having at least the list somewhere obvious may help new-comers. ****** Installation programs prompts that could be improved. * It would help if the view program had a print option. * On the installation program acknowledge what media was selected. After I selected CDrom I wasn't sure if the selection was taken since nothing happened after I selected it (just went back to the previous menu) * Using Fdisk I noticed that if I pressed 'C' and nothing happened I had to enter the disk geometry. Why not have the program inform the user if it needs the geometry after the user has pressed 'C'. * At installation and at boot time why not display the name of the devices next to their code. A little prompt 'IDE HD 1' would be a lot more meaninfull that the actual codes. Unfortunantly the sio driver doesn't take advantage of the boca's interrupt register and so it polls all 16 ports every time any of the interrupts. I tried to fix the driver, but it kept hanging. The NetBSD driver does the right thing (I wrote the first version), but that doesn't help much. I don't know if you can run two of them on the same FreeBSD system. Because of the driver problem, I'm figuring that if I want that many serial ports I'll dedicate a machine to being a terminal server and run NetBSD on it. It really is fairly hard to use in parts. Perhaps much of this stems simply from the fact that we're not done yet and all of this is going to get filled in later, but there are sections which seem fairly complete but are yet rather small to be out on their own. The term `port' is somewhat misleading. It doesn't necessarily mean that you have to patch something in order to make it a `port'. (Though most external software requires at least some Makefile tweaking.) It's simply a standardized procedure on how to integrate third-party software, and make it easily accessible to the FreeBSD users. Look into the Makefile of a sample port, and read the files /usr/ports/GUIDELINES and /usr/share/mk/bsd.ports.mk. A minimal port (no patching required, the distribution files compile out of the box) would contain: /usr/ports/categ/foo/ -+-- Makefile | +-- files/ | +-- pkg/ -+--- PLIST | +--- DESCR | +--- COMMENT The Makefile is the glue for everything. There's a section in the FreeBSD handbook on how to order the variables in this file. Basically, you need to mention the name of the distribution file (.tar.gz is implied unless stated otherwise), the ``master site'' where the distribution file resides, and a category where this port belongs to. The files/ directory can be left empty in the first place. Once you've correctly setup your Makefile, so the distribution file can be found (and has been fetched to the local system), simply run ``make makesum'' in order to put an MD5 checksum file there. The pkg/ subdir takes all the stuff that's required to for the package tools. The PLIST contains the locations and names of all the files that must be (un)installed for this package. Typically, you'll find something like @cd /usr/local bin/foozoolix man/man1/foozoolix.1.gz there. I think the structure is obvious, for special hints refer to pkg_create(1). The file COMMENT contains a single description line describing the package. The file DESCR contains a verbose description of the package in question; it's typically some README file that can also be found in the distribution. The purpose is that this file will be available without downloading the entire distribution files, so one can have a look at it and decide whether to actually get/compile/install the whole mess or not. -- cheers, J"org private: joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ ically, you'll find something like @cd /usr/local bin/foozoolix man/man1/foozoolix.1.gz there. To that end, I've merged sections on some submission, but it often requires some rewriting to make it work smoothly. The other thing, which is tunable, is the section level deptch at which sgmlfmt stops breaking the sections into separate files. Right now, this is set deeper than I would like because some chapters are sectioned so deep that people would complain about the HTML pages being too large. I suppose I could try adjusting the "split" level and see how people react... The worst offenders are documents that were standalone before and in the context of the handbook have been bumped down a level or two. Some sections that are still in outline form have far more section headings than would actually be needed in an actual document; they are mostly placeholders for ideas that should be addressed. OK, I'm going on a general review craze in there soon, so let's see. I need to also look at the fact that much of sysinstall/help//... has become part of the handbook! Argh, two copies at once and in multiple languages, at that! That reminds me, we have no top level switch on the pages for selecting the language you want them in, but I suppose we can get to that later when we figure out just what the heck we're going to do with the whole multi-lingual thing. It's not exactly a _small_ issue, mind you, and we've probably put it off a little longer that we should have even now. Far better would be to scoop all the sysinstall/help//... files straight into the handbook with the appropriate edits. Then we can hack a bit on the release tools to stick compressed ascii versions of the desired manuals on the install floppies. Sure and as I'd like to stick the HTML versions on there too, of course, but I don't think that I'm going to manage to get Lynx on the boot floppy! Maybe on the root floppy, maybe.. Hmmmmmmm! :-) That'd still leave at least a few "intro" docs in ASCII though, just to tide the user through enough screens to *get* the root floppy loaded. It's not exactly a _small_ issue, mind you, and SGML marked sections can be used for such purposes. Marked sections behave essentially like an #ifdef FOO ... #endif. They could be used for multi-lingual purposes. They could also be used to generate subsets of the handbook, such as the install documents that go on the boot floppy. It makes little sense to have both ASCII and HTML on the install disk since you can probably write a function to program to do minimal HTML formatting in less space. Since the HTML from the handbook is machine generated, error handling need not be as robust as for a general purpose browser. The Handbook Big Cheese is welcome to clean it up and include it, presuming it passes muster. Installing and enabling the Boca 16 with FreeBSD ------------------------------------------------ So you got yourself a Boca 16 port board or are thinking about it? The modifications to make it happen with FreeBSD are pretty straighforward, but you'll need certain things before you can Make it Happen: One, you either need the kernel sources installed so you can recompile the necessary options or you'll need someone else to compile it for you. The 2.0.5 default kernel does not come with multiport support enabled and you'll need to add a device entry for each port anyways. Two, you'll need to know the interrupt and IO setting for your Boca Board so you can set these options properly in the kernel. One important note - the actual UART chips for the Boca 16 are in the connector box, not on the internal board itself. So if you have it unplugged, probes of those ports will fail. I've never tested booting with the box unplugged and plugging it back in, and I suggest you don't either. Make it Happen -------------- If you don't already have a custom kernel configuration file set up, follow the instructions in the FAQ or handbook on doing so. I strongly advise you to refer to it, but the basics are: (from the FAQ) cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf cp GENERIC MYKERNEL vi MYKERNEL (this is the point where you make the changes indicated) config MYKERNEL cd ../../compile/MYKERNEL make all make install reboot Actual Kernel Changes --------------------- The following presumes you're using the kernel name MYKERNEL and editing with vi. In the configuration file, you need to make the following changes: add the line "options COM_MULTIPORT" where the current "device sio xxx" lines are, you'll need to add _16_ devices. Only the last device includes the interrupt vector for the board. (See man sio for detail as to why) In my kernel, the devices are as follows: device sio1 at isa? port 0x100 tty flags 0x1005 device sio2 at isa? port 0x108 tty flags 0x1005 device sio3 at isa? port 0x110 tty flags 0x1005 device sio4 at isa? port 0x118 tty flags 0x1005 ... device sio15 at isa? port 0x170 tty flags 0x1005 device sio16 at isa? port 0x178 tty flags 0x1005 irq 3 vector siointr The configuration of my Boca Board is interrupt 3, IO port address 100h. Each port is +8h from the previous port, thus the 100h,108h,110h... addresses. The flags entry _must_ be changed from this example unless you are using the exact same sio assignments. Flags are set according to 0xMYY where M indicates the minor number of the master port (the last port on a Boca 16) and YY indicates if FIFO is enabled or disabled(enabled), IRQ sharing is used(yes) and if there is an AST/4 compatible IRQ control register(no). In this example, flags 0x1005 indicates that the master port is sio16. If I added another board and assigned sio17 through sio28, the flags for all 16 ports on _that_ board would be 0x1C05, where 1C indicates the minor number of the master port. Do not change the 05 setting. Save and complete the kernel compilation and install process. After compile, install and reboot --------------------------------- Presuming you have successfully installed the recompiled kernel and have it set to the correct address and IRQ, your boot message should indicate the successful probe of the Boca ports as follows: (obviously the sio numbers, IO and IRQ may be different) sio1 at 0x100-0x107 flags 0x1005 on isa sio1: type 16550A (multiport) sio2 at 0x108-0x10f flags 0x1005 on isa sio2: type 16550A (multiport) sio3 at 0x110-0x117 flags 0x1005 on isa sio3: type 16550A (multiport) sio4 at 0x118-0x11f flags 0x1005 on isa sio4: type 16550A (multiport) sio5 at 0x120-0x127 flags 0x1005 on isa sio5: type 16550A (multiport) sio6 at 0x128-0x12f flags 0x1005 on isa sio6: type 16550A (multiport) sio7 at 0x130-0x137 flags 0x1005 on isa sio7: type 16550A (multiport) sio8 at 0x138-0x13f flags 0x1005 on isa sio8: type 16550A (multiport) sio9 at 0x140-0x147 flags 0x1005 on isa sio9: type 16550A (multiport) sio10 at 0x148-0x14f flags 0x1005 on isa sio10: type 16550A (multiport) sio11 at 0x150-0x157 flags 0x1005 on isa sio11: type 16550A (multiport) sio12 at 0x158-0x15f flags 0x1005 on isa sio12: type 16550A (multiport) sio13 at 0x160-0x167 flags 0x1005 on isa sio13: type 16550A (multiport) sio14 at 0x168-0x16f flags 0x1005 on isa sio14: type 16550A (multiport) sio15 at 0x170-0x177 flags 0x1005 on isa sio15: type 16550A (multiport) sio16 at 0x178-0x17f irq 3 flags 0x1005 on isa sio16: type 16550A (multiport master) If the messages go by too fast to see, dmesg > more will show you the boot messages Making the devices ------------------ If you've ever used the MAKEDEV script, this will be a cinch. If you've never used the MAKEDEV script, this will be a cinch. I'm sure some bright person could do a script off the top of their head to create all 16 devices, but the slow-and-stupid way (ie - my way) is to su root cd /dev ./MAKEDEV tty1 ./MAKEDEV cua1 .. (everything inbetween) ./MAKEDEV ttyg ./MAKEDEV cuag If you don't want/need callout devices for some reason, you can dispense with making the cua* devices. You're Done ----------- That's all folks. If you want a quick and sloppy way to make sure the devices are working, you can simply plug a modem into each port and (as root) echo at > ttyd* for each device you have made. You _should_ see the RX lights flash for each working port. It's cheesy, but it's quick. Check the FAQ for information on setting up dialin and out, and good luck!
