These represent problem reports covering all versions fo FreeBSD including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed analyzed The report has been examined by a team member and evaluated feedback The problem has been solved, and the originator has been given a patch or a fix has been committed. The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. suspended Work on the problem has been postponsed. This happens if a timely solution is not possible or is not cost-effective at the present time. The PR continues to exist, though a solution is not being actively sought. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested. From: Garrett Wollman To: goldberg@cs.ubc.ca Cc: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@freebsd.org Subject: kern/1555: kern Date: Mon, 2 Sep 1996 13:24:28 -0400 < Aug 22 07:27:53 homebrew /kernel: nfsd send error 55 > Aug 23 07:16:49 homebrew /kernel: nfsd send error 55 Error number 55 is ENOBUFS, ``No buffer space available''. There are a number of possible causes for this error: 1) Your machine is out of mbufs. Recompile with more. 2) Your network interface is hosed. Sometimes, if bad things happen inside a driver, output packet processing can come to a halt without the kernel knowing about it; if this happens when the queue is full, it will get stuck. (I used to see this one a lot when working on my experimental polling code.) 3) Your network interface is really busy. If the messages come only intermittently, this is the most likely cause. -GAWollman -- Garrett A. It has both Free BSD and Net BSD on it. I bought it awhile back and, as an experiment, installed netbsd on a laptop with it (250MB hard drive). That laptop has since bitten the dust. What I have now is a computer with 16MB, ADM486dx2-80, and EIDE Western digital drives. Recently, I bought a 2nd Western Digital EIDE hard drive and have been trying to install FreeBSD (vers 2.0) on it. I've even tried makeing it the primary and only HD (setting jumpers according to disk documentation, etc). I use rawrite to copy boot and cpio floppies and started the install, but I get stuck in disklabel, which keeps telling me me I have invalid partitions when I try to assign. I've tried carving up my harddrive lots of ways with your fdisk (I have to say it seems more confusing to me than linux's fdisk, but that may be a matter of experience.) For instance, linux's fdisk will list the numbers for different partitions (including various BSD type partitions). I was only able to install linux after getting updated disk manager software from Western Digital (actually Ontrack) and I wonder if this, and the fact that I'm using 1gig+ drives, is part of my problem. I did try creating relatively small partitions (300 to 400MB) and having them in the low number cylinders of my drives. I'm sure there are improvements in newer versions of FreeBSD, but I wanted to try what I had to get a feel for things before breaking down and ordering a new CD-ROM BTW, I suppose that my old verson doesn't understand ATAPI cd-rom drives (my linux version sure doesn't, aargh), what about the latest versions? Could I install directly from an ATAPI cd-rom drive with those? Thanks in advance for any help, Regards, Carl Weidling From owner-freebsd-bugs Mon Sep 2 19:37:29 1996 Return-Path: owner-bugs Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id TAA25462 for bugs-outgoing; Mon, 2 Sep 1996 19:37:29 -0700 (PDT) Received: from time.cdrom.com (time.cdrom.com [204.216.27.226]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id TAA25456 for ; Mon, 2 Sep 1996 19:37:27 -0700 (PDT) Received: from time.cdrom.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by time.cdrom.com (8.7.5/8.6.9) with ESMTP id TAA06698; Mon, 2 Sep 1996 19:37:20 -0700 (PDT) To: Carl Weidling cc: bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: Trouble with disklabel trying to install Free BSD In-reply-to: Your message of "Mon, 02 Sep 1996 18:26:43 PDT." <199609030126.AA08718@waltz.rahul.net> Date: Mon, 02 Sep 1996 19:37:20 -0700 Message-ID: <6696.841718240@time.cdrom.com> From: "Jordan K. Ulf has a 4 ``port'' Zynx ethernet card, based around the 2104x chipset. (I was talking to him on IRC about this). If he took a machine connected to one of the interfaces (say de0, which has aliases defined on it) and tracerouted ACROSS the machine with the Zynx card (to another net on one of the other interfaces, since this is a router), traceroute returned the address of the last alias added to the de0 interface as being the first hop, not the ``primary'' address of the interface, which IMHO (and his too) should be the address returned. There's no concept of "primary" address in the kernel, they just sit on a linked list. The kernel does a match of those addresses with the destination address to determine the "source" address. I forget the function that does this but it's likely it's just matching the address on the end of the list straight away. At least, it's something like that, Garrett probably knows the details. I ran into this problem with the virtual hosting box I set up. I couldn't control the "source" address of the packets that were originating from programs running in the virtual host environments. -- Paul Richards. Originative Solutions Ltd. Can you offer a solution to this problem? I think it's a problem with the X-Server, since I have seen that on various platforms running XFree86-x.xx. To switch terminals you normally use . The state of these keys gets sometimes somehow saved, when switching to text mode. Just press once again or in text mode and you should type again 'normal' characters. (On my keyboard it's the problem with left and right keys. To switch terminals I have to use the left one, but sometimes ...) This bug is not present in 4.4Lite. Luckily it has a simple fix: replace, in netinet/in.c, the line #define SUBNETSARELOCAL 1 with #define SUBNETSARELOCAL 0 I'll try to explain the problem in some detail. It's a bit tricky. When a TCP connection is opened, snd_cwnd is set to a large value (2^30); it is reset to 1 MSS in tcp_mss(), but _only_ if in_localaddr() returns 0. In other words, slow start is defeated for "local" connections, thus causing a full window of data to be blasted onto the network at the first write (if, of course, enough data is available). The above behaviour (which is not present in 4.4Lite, where snd_cwnd is always set to 1 MSS in tcp_mss() -- just checked on TCP/IP Ill. vol.2) is based on the assumption that "local" connections have a high speed path, perhaps with no routers or bottlenecks in the middle. HOWEVER: with the default system configuration (in 2.1R, 2.1.5 and possibly -current, although I have no sources available for the latter) in_localaddr() defines networks as local basing on CLASSA/CLASSB/CLASSC netmasks instead of using the subnetmask associated with the various i/f addresses (this behaviour is regulated by the value of SUBNETSARELOCAL which is 1 by default). The consequence of all the above is that in many many cases slow_start is disabled when it should not. Typical examples are: - CLASS B networks which are further partitioned (e.g. here in Pisa most networks are 131.114.X.Y, but the various links range from 9.6Kb/s to 10Mb/s); I suspect that this occurs in a lot of places. - PPP links (especially those using the "tun" device, where a dedicated address is not needed on the point-to-point link). However, I want to specify that getgr* should get wheel group membership out of YP, not have it work "by default". I read the man page, and I think it wants me to put "+wheel" in my group file. When I do that, I get: pst@base$ ./foo daemon -- done This is very bogus. Daemon is certainly not in the wheel group, and the other stuff is missing. With an /etc/group entry for wheel reading: +wheel::: I get pst@base$ ./foo -- done showing no entries. with +wheel:* the libc function core dumps. :-( Yet another bug. You're not doing anything wrong. The code is just busted. I've been waiting for an excuse to fix this. Thanks for prodding me. I've got a patch for getgrent.c for you to try at the end of this message. This should work on both -current and 2.1.x. First, some discussion. > With the following program: > > ------ > #include > #include > #include > #include > #include > > main(int argc, char **argv) > { > char **g; > struct group *gr; > > gr = getgrgid((gid_t) 0); > if (!gr) > perror("no gr"); You should bail here if gr == NULL, otherwise you'll SEGV at the next line. Yep. > However, I want to specify that getgr* should get wheel group membership > out of YP, not have it work "by default". > > I read the man page, and I think it wants me to put "+wheel" in my group file. Hm. I have to think about this. Because of the way we use Berkeley DB databases for the password system, /etc/master.passwd entries must stick to the proper format, otherwise pwd_mkdb would get very confused. So you can't have things like + or +:, which are legal to use in /etc/passwd on other systems. We don't use databases for groups though. I'm not sure I like this syntax, but I've endeavoured to make it work right -- this time. > When I do that, I get: > > pst@base$ ./foo > daemon -- done > > This is very bogus. Daemon is certainly not in the wheel group, and the > other stuff is missing. Bug in grscan(): the _ypfound flag was being initialized to 0, but it wasn't being cleared on each iteration of the for(;;) loop (so it remained set incorrectly during a second pass through the loop and caused the code to falsely select the next group in /etc/group, daemon, of which daemon is a member. Fixed. > With an /etc/group entry for wheel reading: > > +wheel::: > > I get > > pst@base$ ./foo > -- done Another bug in grscan(): after filling in the grp struct from YP, the members were thrown away unconditionally to prepare for local overriding which never happened (you didn't specify any local members). In getpwent.c, this is handled using the pw_fields member of the passwd struct: _pw_breakout_yp() can tell if it needs to preserve local data for a particular field since pwd_mkdb sets a flag for each non-empty field. If the breakout function sees that the flag for a given field is set, it treats the field as being locally overridden and tosses out the corresponding YP data. (The exception is for the username: we always want the YP username.) In getgrent.c, _gr_breakout_yp() has no such nifty mechanism, so we do things backwards: we fetch the YP data first, fill in the whole grp struct, then we read the local data and override fields only if local data for a field exists. Bleah. > showing no entries. > > with > > +wheel:* > > the libc function core dumps. :-( Yet another bug. Yes, though this one isn't strictly due to YP, I don't think. This entry is actually invalid, and getgrent(3) is within its rights to ignore it, though it should not blow up because of it. The problem is that the code does not test for a potential NULL pointer before diving into the member parsing code. Also fixed. Note that this one fix is also outside of #ifdef YP since it looks like it can happen even with YP turned off. If the code encounters an entry like this, which leads to the NULL pointer condition, it considers the entry to be bogus (which it is) and skips it. I _think_ I got this mess behaving correctly now. Please test this patch for me and let me know how things turn out. I also fixed what I think was a memory leak in _getypgroup() while I was in the area. You should now be able to use the following syntaxes: +wheel Insert just the wheel group from YP, no overrides. +wheel::: Ditto. +wheel:*:: Insert just the wheel group, override password to '*'. +wheel:::foo Insert just the wheel group, override members to foo. + Insert all YP entries, no overrides. +:: Ditto +::: Ditto +:*:: Ditto You can't do global overrides such as +:*::foo,bar since it really doesn't make much sense. Note that you also can't override GIDs for the same reason (though it would be fairly easy to allow it). -Bill -- ============================================================================= -Bill Paul (212) 854-6020 | System Manager, Master of Unix-Fu Work: wpaul@ctr.columbia.edu | Center for Telecommunications Research Home: wpaul@skynet.ctr.columbia.edu | Columbia University, New York City ============================================================================= "If you're ever in trouble, go to the CTR. You apparently have ${.OBJDIR} != ${.CURDIR} and a garbage copy of ss_err.h in ${.CURDIR}. The exists() builtin is "intelligent". It searches both ${.OBJDIR} and ${.CURDIR} (in who-knows-what order) and finds the garbage copy. Fixes: 1. Run `make cleandir' before switching object directories. 2. Remove garbage using rm. 3. Use the unambiguous path ${.OBJDIR}/ss_err.h in the exists() test. The machines are identical and swapping out the 3c590 ether card with a 3c509 solved it for the unfortunate Win95 user. Could this be a pci bus problem? I need the exact message from the first error. This is very important. Another thing to try might be to lower the sync rate to 8MHz for all of your drives. It looks like you have an early revision 2940 with the 42.5MHz clock crystal which means that it will run the bus slightly too fast and may be confusing the HP (this is known to happen on some Quantum drives like the 1080S). You can verify that this may be a cause of your problem by looking at the rating on the clock crystal of your card. -- Justin T. I am running 2.1.5-RELEASE. The strange thing is I have two 2GB SCSI drives and I can cp /dev/rsd0 /dev/rsd1 fine. I would have thought this would be about the most strain you could put on a SCSI driver as you are moving data as fast as you practically can across the board (ie. the max speed of the disks). So maybe it is not the SCSI driver?
