It's generally a core-team decision (well, rather a ``Does anybody object?'' decision of the core team). Also, it's not only the `avail' file, but people usually don't have an account on freefall yet, so it requires somebody with root privs on freefall. In case of a ports team member, i think the best way is to filter requests of this kind through Satoshi, since people normally also need an account on thud then. -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ -- NIC: JW11-RIPE Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-cvs-ports Thu Jan 2 07:31:09 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.4/8.8.4) id HAA08770 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Thu, 2 Jan 1997 07:31:09 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail.tky007.tth.expo96.ad.jp (root@tky007.tth.expo96.ad.jp [133.246.32.58]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.4/8.8.4) with ESMTP id HAA08759; Thu, 2 Jan 1997 07:30:51 -0800 (PST) Received: from tky007.tth.expo96.ad.jp (masafumi@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.tky007.tth.expo96.ad.jp (8.8.4/3.4W4-SMTP) with ESMTP id AAA03899; Fri, 3 Jan 1997 00:30:47 +0900 (JST) Message-Id: <199701021530.AAA03899@mail.tky007.tth.expo96.ad.jp> To: torstenb@freefall.freebsd.org Cc: CVS-committers@freefall.freebsd.org, cvs-all@freefall.freebsd.org, cvs-ports@freefall.freebsd.org Cc: max@wide.ad.jp Subject: Re: cvs commit: ports/japanese/vfghostscript4 Makefile From: Masafumi NAKANE/=?ISO-2022-JP?B?GyRCQ2Y6LDJtSjgbKEI=?= In-Reply-To: Your message of "Wed, 1 Jan 1997 07:40:16 -0800 (PST)" References: <199701011540.HAA01803@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Mailer: Mew version 1.54 on Emacs 19.28.1, Mule 2.3 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Date: Fri, 03 Jan 1997 00:30:46 +0900 Sender: owner-cvs-ports@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk > torstenb 97/01/01 07:40:15 > Modified: japanese/vfghostscript4 Makefile > Log: > Fix MASTER_SITES by moving "\" to the 3rd line > > Forgotten-by: max ;-) Gee! (Maybe we need a little > more clear policy about the contributor lists?) I think that everyone who's not core, development team (committers) or documentation project should get a contributor entry. The alternative would be to list everyone in the contributors list, but it just seems kind of redundant to read something like "Principle Architect: David Greenman" and "Contributor: David Greenman" on the same page; one pretty much implies the other. :-) The documentation project is kind of new, but I'm hoping it will gain stature of its own in time. In particular, a public relations dept. would probably be the next logical thing to add, and something which would greatly increase its overall visibility (as will a soon-to-be-published FreeBSD newsletter). As a person who writes and debugs FreeBSD on a daily basis, I definately don't want it obscured by dozens of email addresses all over the place. We provide the CVS tree to people so that they may extract diffs and read the logs to get this information. As a person who writes and debugs > FreeBSD on a daily basis, I definately don't want it obscured by dozens > of email addresses all over the place. We provide the CVS tree to people > so that they may extract diffs and read the logs to get this information. > We always try to include the submitter w/email address in the CVS log, > no matter how trivial the change. > This subject is drifting from the original a little bit, but I really like to make sure that people know who came up with the "good idea." This includes perhaps the contributors name in the description (esp. when there are multiple parties ideas embodied in the commit.) I believe that there are few things that people get out of working on FreeBSD. The first and foremost is the feeling of accomplishment (and giving peer credit can reenforce that feeling.) Also, in a less altruistic direction, I have known people to get jobs, partially because they have contributed to the BSD (Free/Net) projects. I think that as a committer of other peoples code and ideas, it is very important to make sure that THEY get the credit for the work -- so that there is no confusion that it is my invention. In my little (VM) world, there are lately becoming some really powerful contributors. I would NOT like to see lots of chaffe floating around in the source code though. Excessive ifdefs are just as bad.
