Yes, but people simply don't do that. If anybody can offer a guarenteed way to include w/o needing to defined something like HAVE_SYS_PARAM_H in the Makefile, I'll switch all ports over to that. There has been a discussion in the ports list about this. Yeah, I know. Unfortunately, we don't get to play god, otherwise I would have done this several years ago. The rules are to use param.h, and to add HAVE_SYS_PARAM_H type code to every application you build with. I don't like those rules either, but that's the facts of life. Anything else sucks. We can be high and mightly and tell people they *will* use the BSD macro in , but it simply doesn't happen. The masses use __FreeBSD__ whether we like it or not. I want something that covers FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, BSDI. "#if defined(__FreeBSD__) || defined(__OpenBSD__) ... " is simply ludicrist. Yes, I agree with you there. I've wanted this fixed for ages. Get Free, Open, Net, and BSDI to agree on something COMMON and we can take it from there. If you do something unilaterally, you just add more confusion. You can't have bsd.port.mk pass things like 'CFLAGS=... -D__FreeBSD__' to all the real makefiles because many will break as they build CFLAGS from other definitions, and some don't even use CFLAGS at all. However, I do have a list of suggestions: (a) this is OS, not compiler dependant (that means it has to fit in the specfile at a minimum) (b) runtime is better than compile time for many things, however runtime is not a do-all win (c) capability bits are far better than datecodes (d) it has to let one or more of the other guys get out of sync That's why I think autoconf is the way to go, instead of having one or two symbols. If I know what capabilities I have (if they are individually enumerated), then I can choose to code based on a given capability, not an OS rev level. This is clearly a win, which is why autoconf is clearly a win. If we had enough energy, I'd suggest just porting everything over to autoconf. Adding a second reply, I think I'd like a text-processing category in ports (didn't you suggest something like this a while ago?) for things like glimpse, isearch, rman, unroff and at least some of the stuff in print which is concerned with text _formatting_ instead of printing (TeX and friends, makeindex, ...). BTW, print/texinfo can go, we have the latest version in the base system. tg From owner-cvs-ports Tue Feb 18 01:58:42 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id BAA23085 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Tue, 18 Feb 1997 01:58:42 -0800 (PST) Received: (from obrien@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id BAA23076; Tue, 18 Feb 1997 01:58:37 -0800 (PST) Date: Tue, 18 Feb 1997 01:58:37 -0800 (PST) From: "David E. Exactly. My SP and Jade (DSSSL engine) ports are just waiting for such a category to be formally approved. Glimpse and isearch should at least have a cross reference in database if they don't actually live there. Incidentally, a new version of Isearch is on the verge of being released that is considerably faster--orders of magnitude, not just little tweaks. :) Unfortunately, there are still some bugs with index merging, possibly FreeBSD specific, that I'm trying to shake out before it is released. -john From owner-cvs-ports Tue Feb 18 08:57:40 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id IAA15069 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Tue, 18 Feb 1997 08:57:40 -0800 (PST) Received: (from jmz@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id IAA15059; Tue, 18 Feb 1997 08:57:37 -0800 (PST) Date: Tue, 18 Feb 1997 08:57:37 -0800 (PST) From: Jean-Marc Zucconi Message-Id: <199702181657.IAA15059@freefall.freebsd.org> To: CVS-committers, cvs-all, cvs-ports Subject: cvs commit: ports/print/makeindex/pkg PLIST ports/print/makeindex/scripts configure ports/print/musixtex Makefile ports/print/texinfo Makefile ports/print/dvi2xx/scripts configure ports/print/makeindex Makefile ports/print/musixtex/pkg PLIST ports/print/musixtex/scripts configure ports/print/texinfo/pkg PLIST Sender: owner-cvs-ports@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk jmz 97/02/18 08:57:36 Modified: print/dvi2xx/scripts configure print/makeindex Makefile print/makeindex/pkg PLIST print/makeindex/scripts configure print/musixtex Makefile print/musixtex/pkg PLIST print/musixtex/scripts configure print/texinfo Makefile print/texinfo/pkg PLIST Log: Update to take into account the changes in the tex port (mainly ${PREFIX}/lib -> ${PREFIX}/share) Revision Changes Path 1.2 +4 -4 ports/print/dvi2xx/scripts/configure 1.11 +3 -3 ports/print/makeindex/Makefile 1.4 +14 -14 ports/print/makeindex/pkg/PLIST 1.2 +1 -1 ports/print/makeindex/scripts/configure 1.7 +3 -3 ports/print/musixtex/Makefile 1.5 +158 -158 ports/print/musixtex/pkg/PLIST 1.3 +7 -7 ports/print/musixtex/scripts/configure 1.11 +4 -4 ports/print/texinfo/Makefile 1.3 +2 -2 ports/print/texinfo/pkg/PLIST From owner-cvs-ports Tue Feb 18 09:06:40 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id JAA15539 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Tue, 18 Feb 1997 09:06:40 -0800 (PST) Received: (from jmz@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id JAA15531; Tue, 18 Feb 1997 09:06:36 -0800 (PST) Date: Tue, 18 Feb 1997 09:06:36 -0800 (PST) From: Jean-Marc Zucconi Message-Id: <199702181706.JAA15531@freefall.freebsd.org> To: CVS-committers, cvs-all, cvs-ports Subject: cvs commit: ports/print/mltex/scripts configure post-install ports/print/mltex Makefile Makefile.inc ports/print/mltex/files md5 ports/print/mltex/patches patch-aa patch-ab ports/print/mltex/pkg COMMENT DESCR INSTALL PLIST Sender: owner-cvs-ports@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk jmz 97/02/18 09:06:35 Removed: print/mltex Makefile Makefile.inc print/mltex/files md5 print/mltex/patches patch-aa patch-ab print/mltex/pkg COMMENT DESCR INSTALL PLIST print/mltex/scripts configure post-install Log: Remove mltex. Okay by me. However, it is my opinion that, wherever they land, glimpse, isearch, wais and freewais-sf should all be together. Text is a reasonably good spot, but database would better. (It really > would have helped to have wais/pkg/DESCR say something better than > "FreeWAIS from CNIDR".... :< ) First there was WAIS, a product of Thinking Machines Inc., that consisted of two parts: a flexible indexing and retrieval engine, and a Z39.50 server for remote access. Then there was freeWAIS, developed by CNIDR which was basically the same sort of thing. CNIDR dropped support for freeWAIS for, what I believe to be good reasons, and another group started hacking on it to create freeWAIS-sf. In the meantime, CNIDR treated freeWAIS as their throw-away first draft, and began working on Isite which, like WAIS, includes a search engine (Isearch) and a modern Z39.50 server for remote access. (freeWAIS-sf still uses the Z39.50:1988 standard which has been obsolete for many years.) All of them deal with indexing unstructured text, but freeWAIS-sf and Isearch also deal with structured text, and Isearch can do some limited numeric searching and searching by geographic coordinates with appropriately structured documents (namely geographic meta-data standards set out by the Federal Geographic Data Committee). So, while they are firmly rooted in "text", they are evolving to handle more diverse data formats in sophisticated ways which is why I would suggest "database" as their primary home. At the very least, they should be together though. -john From owner-cvs-ports Tue Feb 18 18:16:40 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id SAA22315 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Tue, 18 Feb 1997 18:16:40 -0800 (PST) Received: from veda.is (ubiq.veda.is [193.4.230.60]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id SAA22251; Tue, 18 Feb 1997 18:16:00 -0800 (PST) Received: (from adam@localhost) by veda.is (8.8.4/8.7.3) id CAA21108; Wed, 19 Feb 1997 02:32:37 GMT From: Adam David Message-Id: <199702190232.CAA21108@veda.is> Subject: Re: cvs commit: ports/misc/isearch - Imported sources In-Reply-To: <199702190026.QAA05100@vader.cs.berkeley.edu> from Satoshi Asami at "Feb 18, 97 04:26:23 pm" To: asami@vader.cs.berkeley.edu (Satoshi Asami) Date: Wed, 19 Feb 1997 02:32:35 +0000 (GMT) Cc: jfieber@indiana.edu, thomas@ghpc8.ihf.rwth-aachen.de, tg@freefall.freebsd.org, CVS-committers@freefall.freebsd.org, cvs-all@freefall.freebsd.org, cvs-ports@freefall.freebsd.org X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL31 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-cvs-ports@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk > * However, it is my opinion that, wherever they land, glimpse, > * isearch, wais and freewais-sf should all be together. If linkage is problematical and all functionality retained, I can fold the former 'wais' port into the GN port so that it can stay wais capable without requiring a surplus port separately. Cute (jeeze, this thing must be at least 10 years old now), but doesn't it belong in games as a "sundry amusement?" :-) This thing is also hardly politically correct, though if you'd named it "ebonics" we might have gotten some educational grant money out of it, so I only hope we don't get flamed for having it in the ports tree. :-) Jordan From owner-cvs-ports Wed Feb 19 01:31:37 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id BAA14708 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Wed, 19 Feb 1997 01:31:37 -0800 (PST) Received: (from tg@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id BAA14701; Wed, 19 Feb 1997 01:31:34 -0800 (PST) Date: Wed, 19 Feb 1997 01:31:34 -0800 (PST) From: Thomas Gellekum Message-Id: <199702190931.BAA14701@freefall.freebsd.org> To: CVS-committers, cvs-all, cvs-ports Subject: cvs commit: ports/net/ftpsearch/pkg PLIST ports/net/ftpsearch Makefile ports/net/ftpsearch/files md5 Sender: owner-cvs-ports@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk tg 97/02/19 01:31:30 Modified: net/ftpsearch Makefile net/ftpsearch/files md5 net/ftpsearch/pkg PLIST Log: Upgrade from 19961208 snapshot to version 1.0. Other things they do don't change the fundamental print-oriented nature. The general trouble with "text" and "print" is that they are fundamentally in a hierarchical relationship--text including most of print--not a peer relationship as, say, "benchmarks" and "games" are. "Graphics" and "print" have a similar problem. Just going through the existing print category, some other things I think should be moved (->) or have cross references added (xref ->): a2ps: xref -> converters html2latex: xref -> converters dvi2???: xref -> converters Lyx: -> editors (xref -> print?) makeindex: -> text (xref -> print?) tr2latex: xref -> converters Quickly looking at other categories, some things in Chinese and Vietnamese that could use cross references to print and converters, eg gbscript and hc (GB <-> BIG-5 converter). -john From owner-cvs-ports Wed Feb 19 14:11:26 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id OAA22711 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Wed, 19 Feb 1997 14:11:26 -0800 (PST) Received: (from ache@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id OAA22704; Wed, 19 Feb 1997 14:11:22 -0800 (PST) Date: Wed, 19 Feb 1997 14:11:22 -0800 (PST) From: "Andrey A. Commercial news server which offers a lot of advantages over inn and cnews. Sucking server, fetches articles on demand, gives you a feeling of an all.all feed. See DESCR file for a more detailed list of features. Only free for truely non commercial organisations like schools and universities. 4 weeks of free trial ! Even if you are allowed to get a free version, you have to register. Binary_only Version. Version 3 is a Beta Version, only BSDI binary available. Will commit a port of version 2.7 laster, because for that Version a FreeBSD Binary is available. One final note. If you start with 2.7, then you can upgrade to 3.0, but not the other way around. They changed data structures ... BTW, news articles are stored in chunks of 100 articles, this gives faster access and saves inodes. Nice News Server. One little problem, the server dumps core, if the program receives a termination signal, for example when shutting down. I'll ask the authors, if we are allowed to put dnews on CD-ROM and if we are allowed to distribute a package (tarball).
