My preference (in sequence): ressurect "apache" in-place, and revert it to 1.2.1. repository copy "apache" to "apache-ssl", while renaming pkg and pkg.SSL etc. remove ssl stuff from "apache" remove non-ssl stuff from "apache-ssl". repository copy "apache" to "apache-current" or "apache13" update "apache-current" or "apache13" to 1.3a1 from the present version. at this point, we have apache -> 1.2.1, apache-ssl -> 1.1.1 (or whatever) and apache-current (or apache13) with history back to beginning of time. At some point when 1.3 becomes "stable" or "released", we can consider copying the 1.3 port contents back to "apache" without loosing much from the 1.2 era. If 1.2.1 is the end of the 1.2 development, then this is probably quite safe. I am against two things: 1) putting version number into any name, it will cause troubles when version will be obsoleted. 2) making just "apache" name without any suffix. In this case is unclear why it is separated from "apache-current" or "apache-ssl", so I prefer "apache-stable" as the name. It is good idea to remove/split ssl stuff from both ports, I never see it working for them. -- Andrey A. F.e. apache 1.3 can be stable release sometimes and 1.4 will be current release. In this case new port must be intruduced instead of just updating existent one, it involves history copying at least if you care of history. Currently "lots of ports" you mean not copy history from previous ones. It is better to relay on some logic in separation process rather than just version numbers, i.e. for Apache port stable and current variants always exists, so it is good point for splitting regardless of numbers. This thing not so obvious, say, for Netscape port, so nothing better than version numbers can be issued there. > * 2) making just "apache" name without any suffix. Fix one serious bug in the RADIUS server's Kerberos interface, one minor nit in the build, and add one feature: - Properly validate the Kerberos ticket we obtained against an actual service so we know it wasn't forged. - Make sure the test programs are built knowing where the database is. - If the make variable KRB_INSTANCE is defined, it names the instance of each user to be used in validating their Kerberos password. (If this instance doesn't exist, the validation will fail.) This can be used for both access control and to keep separate one's login password from the less secure RADIUS mechanism (since exposure of the instance does not expose the null instance). It's not a good idea to commit a port without testing at least "make package" and "pkg_delete `make package-name`". Also, there were several quite embarrasing bogons: @ The comment at top of Makefile said version is 4.2 @ Patches the source all over the place instead of using the flag "--with-tcl" to configure (like the previous revision did) - (*) @ Patches to unused configure.in, etc. @ Instead of installing the subset of internal headers that are necessary (it is clearly stated in the log of Makefile why those were chosen), blindly installing all of them (and even forgetting to update PLIST for that) @ Deleting the "default" rule for no good reason (however, it is clear how this happened...it is because the tk42 Makefile was copied over without enough inspection) In other words, a working port was turned into a non-working one by blindly splatting the tk42 port all over it. I wasted two hours of my time fixing it up. I really hate this, and would have just backed out all changes if it weren't mixed with an upgrade. :( Note this port uses tcl75 in the system again. It may be possible to get it to use a tcl75 installation in /usr/local quite easily (see * above), but I can't try it here. As the name suggests, these codes are representing name of countries, not languages. Since we are making *language specific* categories, I think using language code is more appropriate. So, instead of using ISO3166 codes, I suggest we change our convention to use code defined by RFC1766. Any opinion? You are of course right, but the reason why I started adding "jp-" in front of Japanese packages is that pretty much all software out there designed for Japanese users use the prefix/suffix "jp" (if it's not just "j") to designate the language capability. However, I guess it's more "correct" to call them "ja-". If that's the majority opinion, I don't have a problem changing them.
