As far as the cvs tree tells, what you say about -STABLE was correct for 2.1, but 2.2 was called 2.2-RELEASE until it was renamed to 2.2-GAMMA, then to the correct name for the release, and then it became 2.2-STABLE. Like I noted just above the point you started disputing it. To give the exact references for 2.2: 1.26 Oct 11, 1996: RELENG_2_2_BP 2.2-CURRENT 1.26.2.4 Nov 15, 1996: 2.2-CURRENT -> 2.2-RELEASE 1.26.2.6 Jan 31, 1997: 2.2-RELEASE -> 2.2-GAMMA 1.26.2.8 Mar 15, 1997: RELENG_2_2_0_RELEASE 2.2-GAMMA -> 2.2-RELEASE The commits not included in the list do not change the BRANCH= line. Well, let's be clear about what the semantics are. Previously, they were: "Do not allow yourself to be named as a router in a source-route, but forward LSRR packets if you're not one of the routers in the source-route, and accept source-routed packets if you're the ultimate destination." Now, they are: "Do not forward any source-routed packets, but still accept source-routed packets if you're the ultimate destination". Are these the semantics we want? (My personal feeling is that there should be 2 variables, one for forwarding and one for accepting). However, there is a problem with the actual change: the "goto" bypasses the strcpy() which gives log() something to print. In addition, the whole log(LOG_WARNING, ...) for each packet provides a wonderful denial of service attack (I understand this isn't new with this commit, but it's still an issue). I will correct the strcpy thing tonight. The denail os service attack is indeed present, but we do want the logging. A kludge would be to add yet another sysctl variable, that controls the logging that is cleared after a number of logs, together with a message that logging has stopped and can be restarted by resetting the flag. Another solution is to not allow more then XXX logging entries per minut. -Guido From owner-cvs-sys Tue Oct 28 00:24:16 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id AAA07105 for cvs-sys-outgoing; Tue, 28 Oct 1997 00:24:16 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-cvs-sys) Received: from godzilla.zeta.org.au (godzilla.zeta.org.au [203.2.228.19]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id AAA07090; Tue, 28 Oct 1997 00:24:06 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from bde@zeta.org.au) Received: (from bde@localhost) by godzilla.zeta.org.au (8.8.7/8.6.9) id TAA17212; Tue, 28 Oct 1997 19:16:18 +1100 Date: Tue, 28 Oct 1997 19:16:18 +1100 From: Bruce Evans Message-Id: <199710280816.TAA17212@godzilla.zeta.org.au> To: cvs-all@FreeBSD.ORG, cvs-committers@FreeBSD.ORG, cvs-sys@FreeBSD.ORG, joerg@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: cvs commit: src/sys/i386/conf LINT Sender: owner-cvs-sys@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk > Modified files: > sys/i386/conf LINT > Log: > Removed another comment about not-so-mandatory devices i've missed in > the previous commit. It's perfectly legal to build a kernel without npx0 and with an emulator, and this may be necessary if the npx is so buggy that npxprobe() hangs. See a longer comment about npx0. The visual userconfig still hides npx0, so you can't change its memory size, flags or enable flag. At least log() is used and you have a chance to redirect it via syslogd(?) to a file...if you relied on ipfw using printf, everything would go out via the console. But still, the more I learn about cvs/rcs, the more I discover just how braindead the branch support is. In the long run, trying to keep files on the vendor branch doesn't save all that much in delta space since the first time it leaves the vendor branch, it does a delta from the very first 1.1.1.1 import.. So, we see things like a single line change in some drivers causing a +2500 -1500 duplicate rcs delta. The file size is not all that different if the file left the vendor branch right after import and each delta went in twice. Still, it's damn useful to be able to do this: cvs diff -u2 -rLUIGI | more and see what changes we have relative to what Luigi last released. I'm sure that would make the tracking task easier too. It's not too late. I can do an import of the one (or two?) intermediate releases for history purposes. It will make the next merge a lot simpler. I didn't get this from him - I wrote it myself, so it came at about 30bps from my keyboard, as some form of diff against the old code, sure ;-) He just urged me to commit it, and didn't release a new version himself - it seemed that he considered it to be maintained in the FreeBSD tree, and the separate distribution was dropped (or was going to be made from the stuff in the tree, not the other way around). I've included him in the Cc: line, so he can say more about the state of this himself. Eivind.
