Meaning a user may specify a given year she/he is intersted in or all (the current option). And also the user may specify a given month or all. This would really help a lot in narrowing down the search result to be more precise. Just a few thoughts: while discussing a few points about the server and upcoming development with Martin Cracauer, he showed my his little script supposed to check the availibility of mirrors; quite a few were detected bad. We looked at the mirrors and found out that they are no mirrors, actually. If the intent is that any http://www.XX.freebsd.org/ URL is an (almost) up-to-date copy of http://www.freebsd.org/, then some 'mirrors' miss that goal (i.e. www.br.freebsd.org). I would find such a scheme quite useful. As some countries like to provide native-language pages, these should be integrated as http://www.XX.freebsd.org/XX/, I would suggest, as it is currently done on www.de.freebsd.org. Then, I would seperate the menu into one for mirrors and one with a list of native language pages. I also discussed wiht Martin the problem that few mirrors (if any at all) are running the CGIs locally; we have discussed some solutions that would allow a site to let the CGIs run on freefall but let the links to static documents point back to the original server. Another question would be whether www-mirrors are even needed nowadays. At least for the network connections I can use here in Germany, the caching proxy hierarchy now offered by providers allows for about the same performance as accessing www.de.freebsd.org. (Includes Xlink, IS, and WiN, for those curious). I'm not sure this holds true for other countries. Ok, it is not a xerox from www, it is intended to help brazilians, not english tongue native to read something about fbsd. This is not a secret and never was since 1995. I never hiden this from anyone and I believe all COM.BR can reach www.freebsd.org faster than can they reach www.br or www2.br because they have a 10M access to USA and a 2M from com.br to edu.br where www.br, www2.br and www3.br are located. But they prefer www.br because they have a user group and a list in portuguese. I can send you stats showing this, and I can send stats showing lots of .com and .edu accessing here too. If all you want is a lot of stupid com.br using linux because they don't read english, go on. If all you want is a xerox tell me too, I'm running www-www2 and ftp-ftp6 on *voluntary* sponsored (that is, I'm and others pay the whole costs) machines only for those stupid com.br brazilians that still speaks portuguese and believes FreeBSD can have, like linux, some pages in their native tongue. We have positive results doing so (does it matter?). I've tried to follow what you're doing but many times you changed things (e.g. from sup to rsync) without telling those on www-hubs. I lost the internat.freebsd many times and I'm hand-mirroring them because 1) You trusted me as a mirror and I take you as serious as I believe you take me; 2) I never got an answer from them when I was having serious connection problems. 3) I don't mind what the heck they're running now, ctm, cvsup, rsyncd csvup or all at the same time for selected sites, I can't get anything other than a stupid perl mirror from there each time a new version (2.1.x., 2.2.x) cames up from ftp.cdrom.com. If you're unsatisfied with a FreeBSD presence in another country that does not xerox yours please tell me and I'll shutdown all www and ftp mirrors in Brazil today. Sure, I'm not joking about this, br.freebsd was the 2nd or 3rd mirror outside USA in 2.0 or 2.0.5 times (jordan will remember this if he feels apropriate, many more will do the same), it has never changed WRT having portuguese pages and till 2 weeks ago was so good as many many 404 mirrors. Now you choose my mirrors as the bad guys, please, they were up and available more than most of the US mirrors of wwwX.freebsd.org or ftpX.freebsd.org, and this you can't deny. I really take this seriously. If you're planning to use a perl script to testify my work you must, at least, have a look before, I don't know of any other country whith a "national" Chuck like us. If all you need is a black lamb "village idiot" please tell me, I'll give up on this. I don't personally care whether a freebsd web page is translated into Urdu or Swahilii - just so long as it provides a useful local resource. What we talked about earlier with getting mirrors up to some standard is also valuable, I think, though that has far less to do with the target language than it does with the feature set, e.g. we should support features like searching and local statistics or people in Brazil and elsewhere will only need to go to the U.S. for those resources and that's a pity - a big goal of the regional mirrors is to make that information available "closer to home", after all. We're still waiting for John F. and Ade to define what the "canonical mirror" should look like, however, and until that happens there is no sense at all in pointing fingers at any of our mirrors (nor really will there ever be - even "rogue" mirrors can simply be worked with to improve them rather than trying to blame anyone for anything). I had made an agreement with my ISP, and leave one server into the ISP office, set up a leased line to my home, put a pair of modems connecting the "HomeNet" to the "OuterNet" :) and get back to work. Total $aving$: a lot of money... Needless to say that a 64Kbps Frame Relay link is about US$ 3200/month, and with this arrangment I can work a 38Kbps PPP direct link to the Internet (using a direct serial cable connecting the server to the ISP PortMaster), plus a 33.6 Kbps modem connection to my home via a leased line for about 1/3 the price. That was enough to give a strong relief to my wallet... :) And now, I'm here again. If there is something I can help, please tell me. I don't know the Gallery's present status, or even if Ade is still needing some help. The problem you are going to run into is that some BIOSs can't boot any operating systems that are past cylinder 1024 on the hard disk, somewhere in the 500mb range. If you cut your disk in half, then you're over the limit. The usual way to solve this is to create a small slice at the beginning of the disk, install FreeBSD's root directory into that, then place the rest of the installtion later on. This involves doing some acrobatics with your Win95 partition which is difficult without any tape backup media. THe other solution is to buy another disk and dedicate one disk per OS. I do this and it saves many, many headaches. FreeBSD provides a boot manager that will allow you to select between Win95 and FreeBSD on startup. Neither 2.2-RELEASE nor 2.1.7-RELEASE are "current" nor "stable"; both are releases (albeit both are more or less stable, and they are the latest releases). There are two "stable" branches, one for 2.2 (which contains fixes to the latest release of 2.2) and one for 2.1.7. "current" or, more exactly, "3.0-current" is the current development branch which is heavily being worked on, and will not be generally useful as a production environment. During the past year, my company has placed over 100 webpages into the Top Ten -- the front page -- of the major search engines... and, for a small fee, I am willing to show you exactly how we did it. My name is Stephen Mahaney. I am the president of Planet Ocean Communications. My web marketing company has literally "written the book" on how to position your website on the front page -- the Top Ten -- of each of the major search engines... guaranteed! Our 45 page book identifies every trick & technique that is being used on the Internet to gain an almost "unfair" advantage in landing websites at the top of the search engine lists -- right where you need to be so that potential customers who are seeking your services or products can find you. Our monthly Newsletter keeps you abreast of the latest techniques and frequent changes that take place in the dynamic world of "search engine" science. However, understanding the process does not require a degree in "rocket" science -- nor do you need to be "technically oriented". Whether your website is a "do-it-yourself" project or you are paying someone to maintain your site, you (or your webmaster) need to know the tricks in this book in order to compete with the professionals who are dominating the front pages of the various search categories. To learn more about how you can obtain this essential information and receive a free subscription to our Newsletter -- SEARCH ENGINE SECRETS UPDATE, go to.... http://www.profitmaster.com/se-win/ You'll be glad you did.
