This "new" adapter (see http://www.fore.com/press/current/PR89_25.html) is in fact the same ForeRunnerLE adapter FORE has had for some time. This adapter is based on the IDT NICStAR SAR chipset and requires more work on the part of the host device driver whereas the 200/200E series adapters have an i960 on the adapter which off-loads work from the host to the adapter. At this time, HARP as distributed in FreeBSD does not support the IDT chipset (thus does not support the ForeRunnerLE adapaters) and we do not have any immediate plans to change that. That being said, Mark Tinguely (tinguely@plains.nodak.edu) has done a HARP device driver which does support the IDT chipset. Mark's code can be obtained from: ftp://ftp.cs.ndsu.NoDak.edu/pub/freebsd/atm/nicstar.tgz I also would like to point out that the $99 price is only for the UTP version of the adapter, and only when purchased in conjunction with the ForeRunnerLE switch. Further restrictions are that you may only purchase one adapter at the $99 price for each port on the switch, so a max. of 16 adapters per fully populated switch. I have also been told that the LANE Services (LES/BUS/LECS) are nolonger included with the LE switch and must be purchased as a seperate option. This may not be an issue for most FreeBSD/ ATM users since the HARP software does not support LANE at this time. (Again, we have no immediate plans to support LANE but it's just one of several topics that's under consideration.) -- Joseph Thomas E/Mail: jpt@networkcs.com Network Computing Services, Inc. jpt@magic.net 1200 Washington Ave So. Cc: freebsd-atm@FreeBSD.ORG Sender: owner-freebsd-atm@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I want to warn the readers that two people have tried to use my IDT driver with the ForeRunner LE, and at least one was the 25 Mb version. It sounds like niether has not gotten the driver to work with their card. My major concern is that the SUNI chip on the ForeRunner may be different enough from the one IDT used on the original 155Mb evaluation boards. the IDT uses host memory to re-assemble the incoming packets. I doubt the IDT SAR would ever be a screamer of a performer. if someone really wants the 155Mb card to work, they can send me a card and I will see what the problem is...I used two UTP cards and a twisted CAT-5 cable to write the original driver so a UTP card is okay...I can also use MMF... we do not have any 25Mb ATM here so I would need card pairs to figure out a 25Mb problem. I will send the card back. --mark. Once you've done that, reboot with the card installed (obviously) and you SHOULD notice something like: /kernel: hea0: rev 0x00 int a ir q 9 on pci0.10.0 You're half way there if you do! Next, it's a matter of getting the card configured, which wasn't quite as straight forward as it seemed. But with a little playing around and some hair pulling I was able to figure it out.. Since I couldn't find this info anywhere I figured I'll post it here since SOMEONE might need it at some point.. atm set netif hea0 ni 1 This line sets up the physical device with 1 logical ATM interface. Since I'll be using PVC only I'm limited to 1 device. Check your work by doing a 'atm show interface' you should see 'ni0' under 'Network interfaces' atm attach hea0 sigpvc Next want to tell it what signaling manager we want to assign to the device. Here we're telling it to use a PVC only mode, your choices here are sigpvc,spans,uni3,uni31. Again check by doing atm show interface, you now should see SIGPVC and ACTIVE. ifconfig ni0 inet 10.10.10.2 Now we need to bring up the logical interface with an IP. Do ifconfig -a to see if it's there, can you ping it ? Cool! Good job, you're really close now! atm add pvc hea0 0 33 aal5 snap ip ni0 10.10.10.1 Finally we get to build the PVC.. We're telling it to make a PVC from the physical device (hea0) on VP-0 VC-33 aal5/snap encapsulation IP owned (CLIP) to device 10.10.10.1 (Terminating interface on my router). That's it! do a 'atm show vcc' you should see: >atm show vcc Interface VPI VCI AAL Type Dir State Encaps Owner hea0 0 33 AAL5 PVC InOut ACTIVE LLC/SNAP IP Notice how the PVC is BIdirectional, I didn't get it at first since most of the time they're UNI... Now, can you ping the other side ??? Yes/No ? do a 'atm show stats interface hea0 atm' Do you see cells coming in/out ? Good deal! Glad it's working for you! Anyway, I hope this little tutorial was helpful for a few people, it took a little while to get everything in place and working. The box is connected to a Fore Systems LE155 and can push the data, NO problem. If you have a line on these cards snatch them up, they usually go for a few hundred bucks and seem to be WELL worth it..
