I've learned out of the discussion that there has been updates submitted to the kernel which gives threading support for linux and windows emulation. I'm using 3.0-RELEASE, but I couldn't find any usefull info in the "handbook" on how to do a kernel source cvs update. The commands that I've executed was: setenv CVSROOT anoncvs@anoncvs.freebsd.org:/cvs but the command cvs co sys to update the sys dir of the kernel wasn't recognised. Any suggestions on how I can update my kernel through cvs? Anyway, the convention for the freebsd lists is to CC the poster, so you would have gotten any responses directly emailed to you. > (The (clarified) question is which SCO CDROM is appropriate for the > BMW parts catalog in order to have the correct libraries to run under > the SCO emulator. I posted the ktrace results) I think the ibcs2 emulation in the kernel was written before OpenServer 5 (and its ELF binary format) was released, so you might have better luck with the "sc3" coff-format binaries. It looks like you might have to copy the X11 shlibs from your SCO box though (sco coff shlibs end in _s). I wonder if you need an ibcs2_kdump, since the kdump output for the sc5 binary doesn't make sense. There isn't even a setlogin manpage on my SCO 5.0.4 box, and setlogin can only be called as root anyway. -Dan Nelson dnelson@emsphone.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-emulation" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-emulation Mon Dec 28 10:11:24 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id KAA27894 for freebsd-emulation-outgoing; Mon, 28 Dec 1998 10:11:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from janus.syracuse.net (janus.syracuse.net [205.232.47.15]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id KAA27887 for ; Mon, 28 Dec 1998 10:11:20 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from green@unixhelp.org) Received: from localhost (green@localhost) by janus.syracuse.net (8.8.8/8.8.7) with ESMTP id NAA25006; Mon, 28 Dec 1998 13:09:50 -0500 (EST) Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 13:09:50 -0500 (EST) From: Brian Feldman X-Sender: green@janus.syracuse.net To: "Richard Seaman, Jr." cc: emulation@FreeBSD.ORG, dick@ns.tar.com Subject: Re: StarOffice 5.0? However, while http://lt.tar.com mentions adding COMPAT_LINUX_THREADS to the kernel conf, config reports 'unknown option COMPAT_LINUX_THREADS'. However, CFLAGS= -O2 -m486 -pipe -DCOMPAT_LINUX_THREADS COPTFLAGS= -O -pipe -DCOMPAT_LINUX_THREADS in /etc/make.conf and a make world/kernel builds seems to do the right thing. I've been able to run soffice with both the linux_lib 2.6 port libraries and the libs from the StarOffice tar file. However, when I first got soffice running, pre Dec 10th, the online registration feature did not work. Since the advent of 'COMPAT_LINUX_THREADS' the online registration features has worked. Though I should admit that when I moved to COMPAT_LINUX_THREADS I also installed the libraries from the StarOffice tar file in place of the linux_lib 2.6 libraries. -- Brian Litzinger To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-emulation" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-emulation Mon Dec 28 12:59:10 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA18617 for freebsd-emulation-outgoing; Mon, 28 Dec 1998 12:59:10 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (castles205.castles.com [208.214.165.205]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA18601 for ; Mon, 28 Dec 1998 12:59:07 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (LOCALHOST [127.0.0.1]) by dingo.cdrom.com (8.9.1/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA12473; Mon, 28 Dec 1998 12:56:10 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Message-Id: <199812282056.MAA12473@dingo.cdrom.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0.2 2/24/98 To: Peter Dufault cc: emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: SCO again In-reply-to: Your message of "Mon, 28 Dec 1998 07:23:27 EST." <199812281223.HAA01809@hda.hda.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 12:56:10 -0800 From: Mike Smith Sender: owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > Now that I'm actually subscribed to the emulation mailing list, assuming > there was any response to my last posting, would someone who > had the last word summarize off the list? "sc3" is SCO's 3.x product range; these are iBCS2 systems and you would want to run under the iBCS2 emulator with shared libraries from a 3.x Xenix product. Getting this may be a challenge. "sc5" is *probably* referring to SCOs SVr4 product range (OpenServer/ OpenDesktop). Binaries for this will probably only run under the not-yet-committed SVr4 emulator. For this, you should look at getting the very-cheap for-personal-use-only OpenDesktop license. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-emulation" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-emulation Mon Dec 28 13:04:27 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id NAA19295 for freebsd-emulation-outgoing; Mon, 28 Dec 1998 13:04:27 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from janus.syracuse.net (janus.syracuse.net [205.232.47.15]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id NAA19289 for ; Mon, 28 Dec 1998 13:04:25 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from green@unixhelp.org) Received: from localhost (green@localhost) by janus.syracuse.net (8.8.8/8.8.7) with ESMTP id QAA01378; Mon, 28 Dec 1998 16:02:47 -0500 (EST) Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 16:02:47 -0500 (EST) From: Brian Feldman X-Sender: green@janus.syracuse.net To: "Richard Seaman, Jr." cc: emulation@FreeBSD.ORG, dick@ns.tar.com Subject: Re: StarOffice 5.0? However, if I'm not mistaken, you can compile anyway, and it will turn out ok. Even though config doesn't know about the option, it will add -DCOMPAT_LINUX_THREADS to the kernel compile commands, I think. > However, > > CFLAGS= -O2 -m486 -pipe -DCOMPAT_LINUX_THREADS > COPTFLAGS= -O -pipe -DCOMPAT_LINUX_THREADS > > in /etc/make.conf and a make world/kernel builds seems to do > the right thing. I had trouble with on-line registration for a while too. I thought the problem was that I hadn't added the Office50/bin directory to my PATH. When I did this, it seemed to be fixed. But, I might have re-installed at about the same time, and maybe I changed something else too. AFAIK, COMPAT_LINUX_THREADS didn't change anything compared to the patches that were at lt.tar.com . -- Richard Seamman, Jr. email: dick@tar.com 5182 N. The FreeBSD pipe syscall writes to p->p_retval[1]. Linux glibc wraps the linux pipe syscall, and expects edx to be preserved when the pipe syscall returns. -- Richard Seamman, Jr. email: dick@tar.com 5182 N. The problem is that ps(1) reflects some of the kernel's most intimate parts. It's very difficult to fake a Linux environment at this level. I'm not particularly interested in dejavu the viewer or the plugin. I was working with the command line compressor/decompressor. However, I like to test things when I come accross them, so I installed the plug-in/viewer on my -current, COMPAT_LINUX_THREADS + cmdline proc diffs system. This system successfully runs so50 and the multi-threaded mpegtv viewer. dejavu calls clone and I'm guessing that in the new thread it invokes or otherwise runs the djvu decompressor. In this subsequent thead it core dumps on signal 11. The X window interface continues to run. I've run ktrace and truss on the viewer and neither seem to follow the new thead. gdb doesn't report much that is interesting: Core was generated by `dejavu'. Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault. /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.so.4.8: No such file or directory. #0 0x1 in ?? () Once again, I don't really care that the plugin/viewer doesn't work. However, I thought the people working on the linux thread emulation might be interested in another test case. That's the idea: make a version of ps(1) that mimics the behaviour os a Linux ps(1). I don't think a true port of ps(1) is necessary or even feasable. A version which handles the most common process info. should be possible. Any application that depends on specific intimate Linux info. probably goes to the /proc filesystem itself, don't you think? > Do you have more details? Yes. If you run a Linux-thread-enabled kernel on an SMP box, it works but disables the linux_clone syscall. Even so, soffice appears to work and uses only one process (rather than several when it is threaded). -- Doug Rabson Mail: dfr@nlsystems.com Nonlinear Systems Ltd. Linux threads emulation works by implementing linux_clone using FreeBSD rfork. Currently, rfork, with the flags required for kernel threading, is disabled. It's my understanding that more work needs to be done on the SMP kernel before rfork can safely be enabled. I also understand that Luoqi Chen is working on this. He has posted patches at http://www.freebsd.org/~luoqi . I'm not running SMP at the moment, so I don't know how these patches would interact with the linux threads patches. -- Richard Seamman, Jr. email: dick@tar.com 5182 N. One it looks in the wrong place for the decompressor binary and two, it passes -s1, rather than -1 as one of the args. Both errors are obvious enough if you look at and run the script.
