The first time I install that disk I met the same problem. You can fix that by hand: 1. With fdisk set disk geometry 2055 cyls, 255 hds, 63 sect, then edit FreeBSD slice and set correct start and end sectrors, and slice size 2. With disklabel edit FreeBSD slice and set correct partitions sizes After that you can do newfs, whatever etc, and ignore wdc messages about disk geometry. Sergey. On 15-Aug-98 Thomas Y.C. The BIOS spins up the CD drive, but simply reports "boot record not found", then goes on to try the other configured boot devices. However: a) Windows NT 4.0 install CD _will_ boot in this machine. b) FreeBSD recognizes the CD fine if booted from floppy. c) FreeBSD install CD will boot OK in another machine I have (Award BIOS). The problem machine has an AMI BIOS, datecode 05/06/98, with the version given on the setup screen as V1.16. The motherboard is "PC-Chips" brand, SiS chipset with embedded VGA, K6/300 CPU, CD as master on the second IDE channel. I have tried various combinations of BIOS configuration options, but all seem to behave exactly as expected, other than that the BIOS does not recognize the FreeBSD CDs. Any ideas? Obviously this isn't a problem for me so far as ordinary installing goes (as it works fine booted from floppy), but I bought this machine for the express purpose of experimenting with making no-hard-drive CD-booted FreeBSD systems, and it looks like I'm doomed to failure before I even start! I just ordered two of the board/CPU combos today; > I can let you know how it turns out. They also have pretty good prices on > individual P6s. The boards from Clifford Tech. are definitely 'pulls' from former Toshiba systems as far as one can tell from the AMI-bioses 'Toshiba'-bootmessage. I ordered one of these (even from the other side of the atlantic ocean ...), since PPro-hardware seems to be simply unavailable in Germany. The board was delivered with the CPUs and cpu-fans already mounted to the board. Packaging? - a really big parcle filled up with transport-chips and a antistatic-bag. Documentation? - a few badly copied sheets of paper with non-complete Jumper-options. O yeah, ... the memory. I didn't order the memory from Clifford Tech., since I found only the 64MB Dimms at their site, and I really wanted to 128 MB Dimms for our new dev 'n scratch server. Our standard hardware store barfed totally on the needed '3.3V buffered ECC-DIMM'. Finally they found a source, but the 128MB-Dimms were $375 (675,00 DM) each, so I decided for the 'just parity' ones for ca. $280 (Transcend memory). Board and CPUs are running fine at 200MHz so far. Naturally the system had to survive a series of 'make -j8 buildworlds' before I took it on the real duty. Sincerly, Andreas B. You may have some major problems with the bios. You can get hold of a variety of controller cards that take the place of the second IDE controller (IRQ 15). Some will become the primary controller if you disable the on-board controller. It may be possible to use two IO/controller cards if you cannot find a card with two connectors. Otherwise you may have to do without the smaller disk drive. There may some ISA sound cards that have ATAPI connectors for cdroms (although these connectors may not work with all cdroms), some of these will work with FreeBSD. You may be able to run your cdrom from a sound card, but you won't be able to boot from it. However for a large hard drive >500MB you will need either a bios on the controller card or a hard disk that can pretend to be smaller. Both the Fujitsu disks that I own have jumpers on them to perform this function. FreeBSD can be told the correct parameters so that it uses the whole of the disk. I have tried using a planet EIDEMAX controller which claims to have a bios that runs code that precedes the normal bios code and allows large drives to work. But I found this not to be the case. The mother board bios completely refused to allow the on board IDE controller to work at all unless it could recognise the disks correctly. The bios on my pentium board can be told that there are no other devices apart from one disk on the primary controller. When FreeBSD boots it can find the other controller and devices (ATAPI STATIC in the kernel seems to allow this. I use these settings with a removable hard drive bay so that I can add and remove a hard drive with no complaints from the bios). Sorry to sound so pessimistic, but PC hardware is just like that. The drive prices are comparable, but the Travan-5 drives hold twice as much, uncompressed (5GB for the Exabyte vs 10GB for the Travan-5). I'm aware that the Travan-5 media costs something like eight times as much as 8mm, but I'm willing to live with that (also, I'm staying away from used/refurbished drives). It is supposed to be OS-independent, as it just connects between your existing controller and your drives, and only needs power from the computer. However, as with a lot of "xxx-independent" things, when I spoke to them, they mentioned they had a problem reported by a BSDI user (something to do with timeouts, which they easily fixed in their PROM code). So I'd be interested to hear of any experiences with FreeBSD. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, I am new to FreeBSD (and UNIX in general), so would appreciate any assistance here. So far I have a "trainer" system running nicely on an old 486, and have been having a ball! We are setting up our own web server to host sites presently hosted with commercial hosting services, and need to buy a new machine for this. We will use FreeBSD/Apache (or probably Stronghold for SSL). I want a relatively high-end machine to support growth, and because we expect to have a lot of CGI/API usage in the future. Since my partner has a love affair with Dell, it looks like we will use a Dell XPS R400, 128 or 256MB ECC 100MHz SDRAM, 10GB Ultra ATA IDE (probably with a Duplidisk RAID 1 mirroring system - see separate post), with 3COM 3C905 ethernet. This covers the essential stuff for the web server. There also will be a EIDE CD-ROM drive, which I have no details on. Any comments so far? I assume this hardware should be supported OK. We will buy two machines, one to be live on the Web, the other as spare/testbed/office workstation. For this I need to know what video card I can use with X11. Dell offer a "STB nVidia ZX 8MB 3D 2X AGP" and a "ATI Xpert 98D 8MB 3D 2X AGP". After reading the notes on support for video cards, I am thoroughly confused. Can anyone tell me if these are supported, or make a recommendation for a 8MB card? -- Graeme Tait - Echidna To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Tue Aug 18 19:43:28 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id TAA01411 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Tue, 18 Aug 1998 19:43:28 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from mail.HiWAAY.net (fly.HiWAAY.net [208.147.154.56]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA01400 for ; Tue, 18 Aug 1998 19:43:23 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from dkelly@n4hhe.ampr.org) Received: from nospam.hiwaay.net (tnt2-160.HiWAAY.net [208.147.148.160]) by mail.HiWAAY.net (8.9.0/8.9.0) with ESMTP id VAA21188; Tue, 18 Aug 1998 21:42:42 -0500 (CDT) Received: from n4hhe.ampr.org (localhost.ampr.org [127.0.0.1]) by nospam.hiwaay.net (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id VAA06649; Tue, 18 Aug 1998 21:18:27 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from dkelly@n4hhe.ampr.org) Message-Id: <199808190218.VAA06649@nospam.hiwaay.net> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0.2 2/24/98 To: Graeme Tait cc: freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG, info@boatbooks.com From: David Kelly Subject: Re: Choosing a system for FreeBSD. Ditch the IDE. Use 2 or 3 4G SCSI HD's. You'll get much better performance under load if you distribute the spindles you are seeking. Even better to have two SCSI buses. An example: I have everthing on this system on one 9G SCSI HD. Bonnie can wrench 9MB/sec sustained out of it. Spying on the system using "systat -v" while "cvs update" is running shows about 600k/sec on average. While /usr/src is being updated if I kick off another to update /usr/ports at the same time the thruput drops into the 300k to 400k/sec range. CPU utilization is around 2% to 5%, hard to say how much of that is cvs and how much is X. The favored FreeBSD NIC is the Intel 10/100 board. Same price or less than the 3Com. David Greenman likes it, that's good enough for me. > This covers the essential stuff for the web server. There also will be a > EIDE CD-ROM drive, which I have no details on. Any comments so far? I > assume this hardware should be supported OK. Oh, it will work. But once again SCSI is favored. The CDROM is not going to see high use so ATAPI might be Good Enough. Not going to backup your system? I suggest a DDS-3 tape drive. I've been very happy with Archive/Seagate DDS-1 and DDS-2 drives. SCSI of course. -- David Kelly N4HHE, dkelly@nospam.hiwaay.net ===================================================================== The human mind ordinarily operates at only ten percent of its capacity -- the rest is overhead for the operating system. No brainer on my part, I am running -current, and you (I guess) aren't :) Remove the 'options USERCONFIG_BOOT' line and delete the stuff I told you to add from kernel.config. You will have to boot -c after you rebuild your kernel and type the stuff I gave you in by hand. Not only type in the lines beginning with 'pnp ...' I've got the MMJ to 25-pin serial connector, so the physical connection is no problem, but I can't get any communication between the FreeBSD box and the VT. I've edited /etc/ttys and inserted an entry for ttyd1 (and I've tried ttyd0 too): ttyd1 "/usr/libexec/getty std.9600" vt100 on secure I set vt100 compatibility mode on the 320, thinking it might be easier to achieve communication, after vt300 mode didn't work, with no luck. The VT320 is set up as follows: VT100 mode, VT100 ID, Transmit=9600, Receive=Transmit, XOFF at 64, 8bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no auto answerback. I've also tried No XOFF and XOFF at 128. The FreeBSD box is using a standard termcap and gettytab. It's got a modem at cuaa0 (which is why I've mainly been trying ttyd1). Running FreeBSD 2.2.5-STABLE. Thanks for any help. Greg -- Gregory S. If you are able to build your own adapter, between a pair of DB25 connectors cross 2 & 3, 4 & 5, and connect 6, 8 & 20 together on either side. This is a "terminal null modem". Keeping 6, 8 & 20 together on either side means that power-cycling the terminal won't kick you off. You may want to do this eg. if you want to save power/heat etc. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Fri Aug 21 19:05:45 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id TAA06341 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Fri, 21 Aug 1998 19:05:45 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from brooklyn.slack.net (brooklyn.slack.net [206.41.21.102]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA06310; Fri, 21 Aug 1998 19:05:40 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from townsend@brooklyn.slack.net) Received: (from townsend@localhost) by brooklyn.slack.net (8.8.7/8.8.7) id VAA14606; Fri, 21 Aug 1998 21:49:19 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Townsend Message-Id: <199808220149.VAA14606@brooklyn.slack.net> Subject: Re: VT320 terminal connection problems In-Reply-To: <199808211728.RAA11044@dingo.cdrom.com> from Mike Smith at "Aug 21, 98 05:27:59 pm" To: mike@smith.net.au (Mike Smith) Date: Fri, 21 Aug 1998 21:49:19 -0400 (EDT) Cc: gsutter@pobox.com, hardware@FreeBSD.ORG, questions@FreeBSD.ORG X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL32 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > > > > I've got a genuine DEC VT320 that I'm trying to hook up to a FreeBSD > > box. I have it set at 9600/8/N/1, with "VT100 Mode" and a "VT220 ID". /etc/ttys has it set as a vt220 (it's actually on an OpenBSD machine now, but the setup is the same...) ask (privately) if you want the gory details.
