Yes it can be done. I have something similar here in our reserch project, but cannot release as. :-(. Basically, you need to use some form of video conferecing software where multiple users can join a conference call and see the video coming from one user. In this case, the user you are watching is actually the tuner. I presume VIC (and VAT for the audio) can do this. Never tried though. The X server doesn't appear to lock up, but |the only way I can retrieve the situation is to log in via another machine |and kill the fxtv process. This behavior didn't occur with fxtv-0.46 |which I'm now using. The machine is a 128Mb K6/200, running FreeBSD |3.0-current and the XF86_SVGA server (4Mb Matrox Millenium running at |1600x1200x16bit) This is a feature :-) Fxtv 0.47 grabs the mouse when in Zoom mode (e.g. vidmode = 640x480) so that the desktop can't accidentally shift on the user while they're zoomed full-screen watching TV. The point of full-screen is to give the TV the whole screen and behave as if that's all there is, so this makes sense. I found it annoying in my use that I could inadvertantly "move-off" the TV (by bumping the mouse) and have to unzoom and rezoom, or play little bumping games with the virtual desktop viewport to get the TV centered again. Since there's no way to change desktop size in X without taking the server down, this is a good substitute. |Second, this new card also has an FM tuner on board.. is there any kind |of driver support for using this with, say, xtuner? If yes to the first, I'm guessing no to the second. If you have a BT848 (bktr) card, in Bt848-land (see /usr/include/machine/ioctl_bt848.h), the first two should instead be BT848_SCONT, BT848_SBRIG, and they should be issued to the tuner file descriptor (/dev/tuner#). The METEORSETGEO is used in Bt848-land though, and is issued to the Bt848 file descriptor (/dev/bktr#). You need both of these for Bt848 code: #include #include For meteor code, presumably just the first and the symbols that are described in the file you quoted above. This is a known bug (however on my card you have to run fxtv in order to initialize the tuner. It's in some strange off-like state until I do). The bug is in the radio app not initializing the driver properly (I think). I haven't had the time to take fxtv apart to see what Randall does to initialize the driver. As stated in the README: If anyone knows what I'm missing, I'd love to hear about it. One mysterious datapoint is that Amancio found out that on his FM aware card, running fxtv will add an offset to the radio frequencies - I haven't got a clue as to what's happening. I can't tell from your post if that's your problem. The 404 uses the BT898 chip instead of the BT848. Make sure you have a decent video card. I started with a recent Trident (no name), and could never get anything to work. Now I have an older ATI, and so far things appear to be working for the most part. -- brandon@2i.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Thu Jul 23 06:08:43 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA13314 for freebsd-multimedia-outgoing; Thu, 23 Jul 1998 06:08:43 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from whqvax.picker.com (whqvax.picker.com [144.54.1.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id GAA13309 for ; Thu, 23 Jul 1998 06:08:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from rhh@ct.picker.com) Received: from ct.picker.com by whqvax.picker.com with SMTP; Thu, 23 Jul 1998 9:07:49 -0400 (EDT) Received: from elmer.ct.picker.com ([144.54.57.34]) by ct.picker.com (4.1/SMI-4.1) id AA02829; Thu, 23 Jul 98 09:07:47 EDT Received: by elmer.ct.picker.com (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id JAA16585; Thu, 23 Jul 1998 09:07:36 -0400 Message-Id: <19980723090736.A16435@ct.picker.com> Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 09:07:36 -0400 From: Randall Hopper To: Stan Brown , Free BSD Multimedia List Subject: Re: Recomended place to by TV card Mail-Followup-To: Stan Brown , Free BSD Multimedia List References: <199807231215.FAA06476@hub.freebsd.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.91.1i In-Reply-To: <199807231215.FAA06476@hub.freebsd.org>; from Stan Brown on Thu, Jul 23, 1998 at 08:14:40AM -0400 Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org | Cany anyone recomend a good place to mail order the hapanauge (sp) | card? I am ready to put one in my FreeeBSD machine, and play. I bought mine at a local store so I can't recommend based on a first-hand mail-order TV card buy. However, based on past experience with other products, I would recommend checking NECX (www.necx.com) and CDW (www.cdw.com). You may find www.sysopt.com/vendsurv.html useful as well. | A couple more questiosn while I have your attention. Do I need any | other hardware (other than a normal color graphcs card)? Can I do this | with 2.2-STABLE? A motherboard with a solid PCI 2.1 support (Required). (ASUS for example) And for best results with direct video, a video card with fast memory (e.g. VRAM) and RAMDAC, and one which will run at least 16bpp in the resolution you prefer to run in. This isn't required however as you can have your TV apps send images through the X server instead (slower with more CPU and general system load) regardless of what type of video card you have. Please can you help him? Cheers, Roger. Replies to YoosInfo@netsgo.com My problem is that I can't understand about RISC instructions enough. assume that every local register is set for NTSC input and 320*240*3 RGB. now I need to generate a RISC instruction set for that mode. I thought I needed a OP_SYNC and 240 OP_WRITEs like following. OP_SYNC with RESYNC and BKTR_FM1 OP_WRITE with EOL, SOL and 0x03c0 bytes to XXXXXXXX OP_WRITE with EOL, SOL and 0x03c0 bytes to XXXXXXXX . . but bt848 driver doesn't generate such instructions. it generates some different instructions from what I thought. some JUMP codes and WRITE codes that seem stupid. the code generated by bt848 driver is like following. . . OP_WRITE with SOL,EOL and 0x03c0 bytes to XXXXXXXX OP_WRITE with SOL and 0x2c0 bytes to XXXXXXXX OP_WRITE with EOL and 0x100 bytes to XXXXXXXX . . why doesn't the driver move total data of a line to memory at once? is that some kinda optimizing-code to avoid PCI-bus traffic? is it just because there's not enough continued physical memory? what's DMA_BT848_SPLIT (319*2) in your source code? Bit banging code? It is all very vague now... Seriously, when spare time permits or it becomes part of a project I'll do that work. I've fielded a number of these "how do I get Bt848 info on FreeBSD" requests over the last few days. And these are real FreeBSD users asking for it. If you don't have time to maintain the Bt848 pages (I can certainly relate to that), could you lend them to Doug to put up? I think he volunteered to host them in the interim. It appears we're losing potential TV users on FreeBSD by the minute! Only a few that hit the dead link will bother to take the time and mail about it. Randall ----- Forwarded message from "Aryo K. That (driver deltas) is a separate issue. The current topic is access to the Bt848 home page. The last info I have on this is: Amancio Hasty: |I took the web page down as well as my ftp site. So while you sort things out on your end, why not loan them to someone that can provide them to the net. Doug volunteered. Or I can put them up on my site if it doesn't take much space (I don't have much). Main thing is getting them back on-line. It'd be a shame for someone to have to design another Bt848 Home Page from scratch just to get one back up somewheres.
