Grrr... Anyone solved this problem running the RealPlayer v5 for linux? There are a few posts over the last year describing the same or similar problem, but no conclusive solutions. Just the facts: - SB AWE64 - Voxware snd drivers - running up-to-date FBSD stable - using up-to-date linux_lib 2.4 - LD_LIBRARY_PATH set for rvplayer v5 - raplayer v3 and other audio apps (e.g. amp) work fine - world writable /dev/audio - RealPlayer, Version 5.0.0.45 Other similar queries with no answer: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=1507467+1509322+/usr/local/www/db/text/1998/freebsd-questions/19980927.freebsd-questions http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=491224+493138+/usr/local/www/db/text/1998/freebsd-questions/19980705.freebsd-questions http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=2188360+2190134+/usr/local/www/db/text/1998/freebsd-questions/19980524.freebsd-questions More obscure facts: - If I open the welcome.ra file from the raplayer v3 distribution I get the 'Cannot open audio device'. - If I open the welcome.rm (an audio/video stream) then the player sort of hangs, the video is black, there is a long pause, then the progress meter moves to the end and announces that it's done. I can manually slide the slider and I can see indivual video frames, but no audio or video. - If I install the OSS drivers and try running rvplayer v5, then my system freezes up completely. I've never set up audio under FreeBSD before, so I could be missing something very obvious. The machine has a Yamaha OPL-3 sound chip and I've already re-configured the kernel to use that chip. I have the following lines in my Kernel config: controller snd0 device opl0 at isa? port 0x388 The following lines appear on startup: opl0 at 0x388 on isa opl0: I did a 'makedev snd0' and it created the following audio devices for me: music0, sndstat, mixer0, sequencer0, midi0, dsp0, audio0, dspW0 as well as softlinks audio, etc. It did *not* create snd*. (Is it supposed to?) However, whenever I go to access the device (/dev/audio or /dev/dsp) using mpg123 or the KDE tools, I get the following error: SoundCard Error: The soundcard system has not been configured. I've searched the net and looked through the kernel sources, but I just have not been able to come up with anything on this. ANy suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Once upon a time, I observed symptoms very similar to what you describe when using the Linux rvplayer. Then, a number of commits were made to the Linux emulator and the two sound drivers in the -current tree (by Amancio Hasty and Luigi Rizzo, if I recall correctly), and suddenly the rvplayer began to work Just Fine. I don't believe these changes were backported to -stable (but I might be wrong)... The answer to your problem may just be to wait a week or two and upgrade to 3.0-RELEASE, or just go -current now, if you Just Can't Wait :-) On Mon, Oct 05, 1998 at 11:17:31AM -0700, David Kulp wrote: > With RealPlayer v5, I get 'Cannot open audio device' although the > RealPlayer v3 for FreeBSD works fine. > > Grrr... Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Can some knowledgable reader comment on the functionality of the Yamaha-based sound system found on some Toshiba notebooks, e.g., the 220CDS. My 220CDS presently runs 2.2.6-RELEASE, and plays audio through /dev/audio & /dev/dsp reasonably, although the gain is rather low compared to the system "beep" played through the speakers even with the mixer gain set to 100 across the board. However, I haven't been able to "record" clean audio from either an internal or external microphone. For example, the "speak_freely" suite compiles directly and connections from other hosts (e.g., Sun, SGI) play here fine through "sfspeaker" on the Toshiba. "sfmike", on the other hand, appears to transmit plenty of noise along with the audio signal, which can just be discerned under the hash. Has anyone experimented with this, and perhaps found a solution? My vibra16x is working great with the latest drivers right now, but I was curious what the status was on running full duplex apps like speak freely with this card. Any new info, or is it still limited to half duplex? As a test, I compiled speak_freely-6.1e both with the original soundbyte.c and with the one supplied with your sound code. However, I get an error when trying to broadcast and listen at the same time. (ie, /kernel: SoundBlaster 16 4.16>1 open: device busy). Quake in X11 mode runs out of the box with the 3.0-BETA. The only problem I noticed is that automatic download in network games doesn't work. For 3dfx mode, you need linux_glide, the patched svgalib-foo and MESA-2.6 compiled yourself with linux_devel, the binary shared library fromt he quake2 distribution does not work on FreeBSD. You may want to search the archive http://www.freebsd.org/seach.html, where several setup documents were posted. Note that the Linux-emul changes are no longer needed in 3.0-BETA. Try http://www.schrade.com/sanctum/freebsd/ More notes (where do I place these?): Permissions seem to be insane. chmod -r u+w . ; chown -r root . 3dfx mode: When using 3dfx mode. You have to use svga-foo.tar.gz to get the console back into sane mode after quake2 exits. Works only with syscons, not pcvt. I'm still having problems that cursor and num block keys don't work in syscons. You can play with pcvt, but make sure you have a network login to operate the machine after playing. 3dfx mode: You can't use the MesaGL lib from the quake2-linux kit. You have to compile your own using the linux_devel port. 3dfx mode: On my box with a nonnome 3dfx card, I can't use 640x480 mode (although it works in windows 95), but have to use 512x384. Do this in config.cfg: set gl_mode "2" In x11 mode, keyboard autorepeat can be switched off if quake2 crashes. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org After just a touch of hacking, I finally got my sound card to work. The required work was to #define JAZZ_DMA16 in sound_config.h, per the SB routine: #ifndef JAZZ_DMA16 #define JAZZ_DMA16 5 #endif I also found that I needed to edit the Makefile for my kernel (in the kernel compile directory) and add "-DJAZZ16" to the IDENT line. For some reason, #options JAZZ16 produced a syntax error when interpreted by config(8). At this point, I had a working kernel, and a kernel that finally supported 16-bit sound for my sound card. Yay! But all was not hunky-dory. It seems that for whatever reason, the kernel doesn't want to let go of the DMA channel. %uname -a FreeBSD ninbox.ml.org 2.2.7-RELEASE FreeBSD 2.2.7-RELEASE #0: Tue Sep 15 06:45:15 CDT 1998 kris@ninbox.ml.org:/usr/src/sys/compile/NINBOX i386 %cat /dev/sndstat cat: /dev/sndstat: Device busy %dmesg (after one working use, one failed) Copyright (c) 1992-1998 FreeBSD Inc. In this file there is one other reference to RELEASE_DMA_CHN, but it is in a function. I would like to ammend this problem, as this sound card sounds much better than the OPTi-931 it replaced. It runs rather sweetly. Follks, I'm a bit tiered hearing about all these great quake tools but with rare installation guides available and uncertainess about the exact environment it can be used in. Saturday is ports freeze and I will add what works for me: - emulation/linux_glide [installs binary] - emulation/linux_mesa [compiles libMesaGl.so using liunux_devel] - add the hacked svgalib to emulators/linux_lib, bumping version to 2.5 [binary only] - NO quake or quake2 port since you need the game CD and versions change rapidly so that there's no point to put it on a FreeBSD release CD. If someone has anything that works better or an idea how to provide a useful quake or quake2 port, then please submit it by Friday evening to -ports with a CC: to me. So, there will not be any FreeBSD support for TV on this card :-( Bye Roger To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Sat Oct 10 08:07:49 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id IAA15196 for freebsd-multimedia-outgoing; Sat, 10 Oct 1998 08:07:49 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from dart.sr.se (dart.SR.SE [193.12.91.98]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id IAA15189 for ; Sat, 10 Oct 1998 08:07:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from gunnar@pluto.sr.se) Received: from honken.sr.se ([134.25.128.27]) by dart.sr.se (8.9.1/8.9.0) with ESMTP id RAA06439 for ; Sat, 10 Oct 1998 17:07:30 +0200 (MET DST) Received: from pluto.sr.se (pluto.SR.SE [134.25.193.91]) by honken.sr.se (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id RAA02631 for ; Sat, 10 Oct 1998 17:07:30 +0200 (MET DST) Received: (from gunnar@localhost) by pluto.sr.se (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA13758 for freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org; Sat, 10 Oct 1998 17:07:29 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from gunnar) Message-ID: <19981010170729.A13753@sr.se> Date: Sat, 10 Oct 1998 17:07:29 +0200 From: Gunnar Flygt To: freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: [gunnar@pluto.sr.se: Trying to compile bktr support] Reply-To: flygt@sr.se Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary=MGYHOYXEY6WxJCY8 X-Mailer: Mutt 0.93.2i Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org --MGYHOYXEY6WxJCY8 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Since I don't get any response to this in questions I try it here instead.
