I've installed FreeBSD x86 *MANY* times on x86 and twice on Alpha (3.2) where I just downloaded the kern.flp and mfsroot.flp, booted the floppies, entered the correct network information, and away the install goes.. I downloaded FreeBSD 4.0 floppies for Alpha and this is what happens: 1) boot dva0 and everything loads fine 2) Select novice, set the auto partitions 3) Select 'user' install 4) Select FTP [ ftp.freebsd.org ] 5) Enter the correct network information (I'm using cable modem and done this a dozen times..so I'm sure the settings are right) 6) Then it looks up ftp.freebsd.org and prompts me with "Last chance! ......" and I select yes. It then formats the hard drive and sets the partitions. When it's ready to start downloading it says: Couldn't open FTP connection ftp.freebsd.org: Not logged in Ok, I know the connection to my ISP is good.. There is no firewall and I have 2 other machines here which have received FreeBSD this same way but they are x86. I've tried changing the setting at the main menu for FTP login to be anonymous instead of username 'ftp' and that didn't work. Any ideas? I've never experienced this before.. If I didn't have a working internet connection then I wouldn't have been able to lookup ftp.freebsd.org. I thought maybe the FTP server was full at ftp.freebsd.org but while I get the 'not logged in' message I can connect fine from my other boxes.. strange! In any case, if a newly created file is older than a file distributed with the window manager, doesn't it point to the possibility that the date/time is set wrong on your machine? I just completed two installations via FTP on two Alphas using FreeBSD 3.3. It couldn't have gone any smoother! I'm so glad to see that FreeBSD is leaps and bounds ahead of Linux as for ease-of-installation. For kicks I had purchased Red Hat 6.0 for Alpha from Cheapbytes. Not only does it detect the wrong NIC types, but the net tools don't work. Red Hat's default "Workstation" installer slaps Gnome/Enlightenment on to the system which is OK, but there are many bugs. If you go to alphalinux.org you can see the numerous amounts of RPM files needed to render the system usable. I'm not trying to bash Linux, but more or less Red Hat's way of implimenting Linux on Alpha. I haven't tried Debian, TurboLinux, Stampede, or SuSe, so I can't comment...but overall, I really am impressed with FreeBSD on Alpha. It also has the worst performance of any Linux distribution. Debian however runs good on Alpha. Also Suse is supposed to run nicely (however, on my system (Alpha) is does not install) The bad part about Debian is the dselect tool. Fortunately after install one can copy all code to harddisk, and start using 'apt' which is better. So far I do not fully agree about FreeBSD on Alpha. There is a lot of progress on 4.0 current so I keep hoping....it will be better. At this moment Debian on Alpha is way ahead on FreeBSD on ALpha: both for the amount of applications and for performance etc etc. Since I prefer FreeBSD I will just keep waiting for better times, don't get me wrong : - ) In Linux I always have to search where are my config files etc, since they are more scattered over the system, then the neatly organized *BSD systems. Anyway, just to let you know. Aernoudt "Mark L. This depends a _lot_ on what hardware you have. I have a series of older 200 4/233's and they installed far easier using FreeBSD than with Debian and overall the system ran a lot smoother. Some of the newer hardware is still unsupported or only recently supported which is what causes the problems. That would mean that I can finally start using my Alpha's for demonstrations on computer fairs. (Applixware is very usefull then... I hope the Linux emulation gets going quickly on Alpha) Next great fair is 19, 20 and 21 November when there will be 130000 people at the HCC dagen in The Netherlands. There are 2 FreeBSD stands: one from the nlfug (http://www.nlfug.nl) and one on the (commercial) stand of Mensys where I wil be demonstrating. FreeBSD is getting the attention it deserves ! > As to the location of settings and configuration files, this is exactly > the same as for FreeBSD/i386 (or should be). Thats true, I meant Linux and FreeBSD: I like the BSD way, nice and neat. But I'm used to FreeBSD (and SunOS) so it's maybe not fair.... But anyway I think Linux is a little lesser organized. If this is the case, then its pretty well worth it for $100. Chances are it'll come down in price anyways. Anyone remember when Solaris 2.5 was available for $99 to 'student' ? Just remember, be glad Sun includes header files with their distributions. With IRIX you had to *buy* them with the developers kit. For $100 you get a Compaq optimized compiler (apparently much better than GCC/EGCS), headers, libraries, and who knows what else. On the downside: - It's C-only. C++ is unbundled. - It (obviously) doesn't support the gcc extensions - I find the format of its error messages annoying - There's less control over the level of warning messages and it whinges about things that I don't normally care about. I don't know what the Matrox MGA Atlas-2 is, but why not pick up a PCI Millieum? I don't know if you consider the Millieum (I or II) to be "beefy", but that's all I used on my x86's. Are you using an XP1000 (EV6), a DPW (EV5/6), and/or third party platforms? I'd like to try to match up my hardware with what seems to be the prevalent development platform. thanks -dave To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Sat Nov 13 23:57:44 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from relay.nuxi.com (nuxi.cs.ucdavis.edu [169.237.7.38]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1E97514CE3 for ; Sat, 13 Nov 1999 23:57:42 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from obrien@NUXI.com) Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (root@d60-025.leach.ucdavis.edu [169.237.60.25]) by relay.nuxi.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id XAA79342 for ; Sat, 13 Nov 1999 23:57:42 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from obrien@dragon.nuxi.com) Received: (from obrien@localhost) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.9.3/8.9.1) id XAA72419 for freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG; Sat, 13 Nov 1999 23:57:42 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from obrien) Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 23:57:42 -0800 From: "David O'Brien" To: freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: AlphaPC post-install BOOT - how? Once booted, Adaptec's work fine. As do Diamond NCR boards. It's just SRM that won't reconginze these boards. A crappy old 100MB IDE drive as root and everything else on SCSI drives would work very well in situation. -- -- David (obrien@NUXI.com) To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Sat Nov 13 23:59:10 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from panzer.kdm.org (panzer.kdm.org [216.160.178.169]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1A49C15294 for ; Sat, 13 Nov 1999 23:59:07 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ken@panzer.kdm.org) Received: (from ken@localhost) by panzer.kdm.org (8.9.3/8.9.1) id AAA60983; Sun, 14 Nov 1999 00:58:28 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from ken) Message-Id: <199911140758.AAA60983@panzer.kdm.org> Subject: Re: AlphaPC post-install BOOT - how?
