The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. Not quite. They use a DTD called SolBook, which is a slightly customised version of DocBook (in the same way that we use a customised version for the FDP). n% of Sun's Solaris manual pages are written in SolBook, and man(1) on a Solaris system is a wrapper script which, from memory, looks at the first few lines and runs nroff or instant on it as necessary. > What are the chances we might see StarWriter emerge as the GUI editor > for DocBook? I'd be interested, but I'll believe it when we see it. You see, in order to do that you'll need some way of pretty printing the DocBook markup so that (for example) Foo... has the "Foo" presented in 18pt Times (or whatever) which means stylesheets. In order to do this they have three choices -- DSSSL, which is the (or an) ISO standard for SGML stylesheets. I don't know of anything that implements DSSSL completely, it's quite a hard problem. Or XSL, which is the stylesheet language for XML. Again, I don't know any commercial product that successfully supports it, let alone a 'free' one. Or they could roll their own stylesheet language. Anyway, I've finally correlated some previous performance tests I had run a while back with rawio and vinum under FreeBSD 3.2-RELEASE. I gave these numbers to Greg at the time I collected them, but until now I had never actually put them into graphical format. See for the details of the test environment and links to the GIFs showing the final results. I am currently in the process of doing the second round of tests, although I have been forced to use a different machine as the test platform. This will obviously skew the results, but at least we should be able to get a pretty detailed look at how various different combinations of RAID-0, RAID-1, and RAID-5 compare performance-wise with vinum, and if I can manage to scare up one or more loaner hardware RAID controllers, I should also be able to compare software versus hardware. I'm throwing this out in the hope that someone's sufficiently intrigued to try implementing it. I'm a little snowed at the moment. ] A lot of FreeBSD third party packages include documentation over and above the traditional manual page, in a variety of formats -- HTML, PS, and so on. Does anyone else think it would be useful if 'the system' could automatically maintain an index page on behalf of the user (say, /usr/local/share/doc/index.html). This file wouldn't be part of any one port, but it would include links to all the HTML manuals that have been installed so far -- it could also include links to the HTML documentation that's been installed from the FDP. Some as yet unwritten program could sit in /usr/local/etc/rc.d and rebuild this file automatically at boot time, or perhaps make it a part of /etc/periodic/daily*, or something like that? So that the user can just point their browser at file:/usr/local/share/index.html and quickly navigate through the installed documentation. This would also need to be rebuilt when ports/packages are added/removed. I think this is probably a good idea, but I'm not sure as to the best way to implement it. This hypothetical rebuild-index.html-from-scratch script needs to know which files form the 'root' of the documentation for a particular package. Unfortunately, you can't just say "Anything that's called 'index.html'", as not all apps follow this convention. For example, bzip2's manual root is called manual_toc.html, tidy's root is Overview.html, and so on. I thought about suggesting an additional Makefile variable, that could list the name of the installed root file -- that fails for things that aren't built from the ports tree, such as doc/*, so that's probably out. A fairly bullet proof approach (I think) would be another file in the port's pkg/ directory. Maybe a pkg/URLS file that listed (one per line) the URLs that are useful for this port, and the text of the link that should be used for that URL. I'm aware that we already have the WWW: entry in pkg/DESCR, but I'm not sure that's really extendable to this idea, and it would involve putting more information in pkg/DESCR which probably doesn't belong there. Thinking about it, this should probably not be limited to just the HTML documentation that's installed. There's no reason why bzip2 couldn't have a pkg/URLS file that looked something like ${PREFIX}/share/doc/bzip2/manual_toc.html:HTML:User manual ${PREFIX}/share/doc/bzip2/manual.ps:PS:User manual ${PREFIX}/share/doc/bzip2/manual.txt:TXT:User manual which would turn in to

archivers/bzip2

The extra flexibility is to cater for ports like Postgres which has a FAQ (plain text), an admin guide (HTML and PS), a Postgres guide (HTML and PS), a programmer's guide (HTML and PS), a user's guide, and so on. That might be entered as ${PREFIX}/share/doc/pgsql/FAQ:TXT:FAQ ${PREFIX}/share/doc/pgsql/admin/admin.ps.gz:PS:Administrator's Guide ${PREFIX}/share/doc/pgsql/admin/index.html:HTML:Administrator's Guide ${PREFIX}/share/doc/pgsql/programmer/index.html:HTML:Programmer's Guide ... ... That's probably not quite complicated enough, because I haven't considered what happens when multiple languages and encodings get involved. But it gives an outline of the sort of thing I'm thinking about. So, ports team, how feasible is this? I don't think the URLS file needs to be mandatory, it's just an extra piece of functionality that can be used if it's present in the port, and ignored if it isn't. Docs team, any ideas or suggestions for improvements? And, assuming this is met with broad agreement, is anyone looking for an interesting project? As I say, I'm not going to get the chance to think about implementing something like this for 3 or 4 months, and I'm more than happy for someone to stroll off with this idea and actually do the implementation work. . . I would appreciate help from other translators, maybe the .fr .es and so on can give me some help in how to do this properly. OK, I've hung out on some of the IRC lists for a while. I still don't like the idea of using them for support. With mailing lists, you're at the mercy of the people who have time to read the message in the couple of days after it arrives. The -questions list has rather under 1000 individuals on it, and often the replies are wrong. By contrast, however, the chat lists usually only have a few people active at any one time, and even they aren't all listening. I just checked #freebsdhelp: 12 people, none of whom I recognize as a FreeBSD guru, and one of whom I recognize as an idiot. If somebody does ask a question there, I'd doubt they'd get a useful response. Doubtless. You might also find http://www.freebsd.org/tutorials/docproj-primer/transations.html (in fact, you should check the entire Primer) and http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/translations.html useful. Please note that the docproj-primer actually uses Swedish in one of the examples, but the example is out of date. I expect that a Swedish translation would be placed in either a doc/sv_SE.DIS_8859-15 or doc/sv_SE.ISO_8859-1 directory, depending on the character set you plan on using for the translation. We can accommodate either. If you could send an update for the docproj/translations.html page to us we can list your translation project with the others. Welcome aboard! What do you mean? Why not a variable for a port, one for an item from doc and so on? On port creation stage -- just modify build or installation scripts for linking nonstandalone TOCs (like manual_toc.html) to index.html. Maybe it can be solved by adding yet another ``MLINKS+='' ? 2. Adding files/DOCROOT file which contains link to documenation index. -- /* Alexey Zelkin && phantom@cris.net */ /* Tavric National University && phantom@crimea.edu */ /* http://www.ccssu.crimea.ua/~phantom && phantom@FreeBSD.org */ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sat Sep 18 10: 0: 5 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.FreeBSD.ORG [204.216.27.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 851C214FF8 for ; Sat, 18 Sep 1999 10:00:03 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.9.3/8.9.2) id KAA69572; Sat, 18 Sep 1999 10:00:02 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from kaa.kfunigraz.ac.at (KAA16.kfunigraz.ac.at [143.50.16.17]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C786D14D32 for ; Sat, 18 Sep 1999 09:58:07 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from dada@localhost.tu-graz.ac.at) Received: from balu.kfunigraz.ac.at (balu [143.50.16.16]) by kaa.kfunigraz.ac.at (8.9.2/8.9.2) with ESMTP id SAA26665 for ; Sat, 18 Sep 1999 18:57:52 +0200 (MDT) Received: from localhost.tu-graz.ac.at (BONLINEB81.kfunigraz.ac.at [143.50.33.81]) by balu.kfunigraz.ac.at (8.9.2/8.9.2) with ESMTP id TAA03451 for ; Sat, 18 Sep 1999 19:01:39 +0200 (MDT) Received: (from dada@localhost) by localhost.tu-graz.ac.at (8.9.3/8.9.3) id UAA03591; Mon, 13 Sep 1999 20:05:34 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from dada) Message-Id: <199909131805.UAA03591@localhost.tu-graz.ac.at> Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 20:05:34 +0200 (CEST) From: dada@sbox.tu-graz.ac.at Reply-To: dada@sbox.tu-graz.ac.at To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@freebsd.org X-Send-Pr-Version: 3.2 Subject: docs/13806: wrong reference in df(1) manpage Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org >Number: 13806 >Category: docs >Synopsis: wrong reference in df(1) manpage >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: doc-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sat Sep 18 10:00:01 PDT 1999 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Martin Kammerhofer >Release: FreeBSD 4.0-CURRENT i386 >Organization: Technische UniversitДt Graz >Environment: >Description: Manpage df(1) refers to ``sysctl vfs'' to list supported filesystems. Intended to be run daily # from /var/periodic/daily # By Andrew Boothman opendir 'portsdir', '/var/db/pkg' or die "docindex: Can't open /var/db/pkg"; @allfiles = readdir 'portsdir'; closedir 'portsdir'; print ' Installed FreeBSD Documentation

Installed FreeBSD Documentation

    '; foreach(@allfiles){ if (-e "/var/db/pkg/$_/+DOCS") { open 'DOCS',"/var/db/pkg/$_/+DOCS"; @docs = ; close 'DOCS'; chomp @docs; print "
  • $_
      "; foreach(@docs) { @docinfo = split(/ /); print "
    • $docinfo[0] - [$docinfo[1]]\n"; }; print "
    \n" }; }; print "
"; It goes through the /var/db/pkg directory, looking for the ports that have our new 'DOCS' file, which is in the format of : FAQ txt /usr/local/share/doc/Sharity-Light/FAQ README txt /usr/local/share/doc/Sharity-Light/README I made this file up for Sharity Light as an example. If the port has a docs file, then the script produces a nice set of links to each type of documentation. Nik, is this what you had in mind?
